On an iPhone or iPad, open Photos > Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. On Android, use Google Photos > Collections > On this device > Screenshots, or the phone maker’s Gallery app. Mac screenshots normally appear on the desktop. Windows saves keyboard screenshots in Pictures > Screenshots, while Snipping Tool uses its Screenshots location unless you choose another folder. Chromebook captures normally go to Files > Downloads.
Find screenshots on an iPhone or iPad
Apple saves screenshots to the photo library by default, not as ordinary files in the Files app. The quickest way to gather them is the Screenshots collection in Photos.

- Open the Photos app.
- Tap Collections.
- Scroll to Media Types.
- Tap Screenshots.
This view collects screenshots separately from camera photos and videos. You can open an image, share it, edit it, or delete it from there. If you took the capture recently, it may also appear in the main Photos timeline according to its capture date.
If the screenshot is not in Photos
- Confirm that the capture completed; a thumbnail normally appears briefly after you press the screenshot buttons.
- Search the Photos library rather than only the Files app. Apple’s default is the photo library.
- Check whether you used an app that captured and saved an image somewhere else. A web browser, document app, or third-party screenshot utility can use its own export process.
- If you are looking for a file downloaded from another device, check Files and the specific folder where it was saved; that is different from a screenshot created on the iPhone or iPad.
Find screenshots on Android
Android phones do not all use the same gallery software, so the exact labels can differ by manufacturer. Google’s standard path in Google Photos is:

- Open Google Photos.
- Tap Collections.
- Tap On this device.
- Open Screenshots.
On a phone without Google Photos, open the manufacturer’s Gallery app and look for an album or folder named Screenshots. Some phones place it under Albums, while others expose it through a device-folder view.
When Android’s standard path does not match
- Use the Gallery or Photos search box and search for “screenshots.”
- Open the phone’s file manager and inspect image folders labeled Pictures, DCIM, or Screenshots.
- Check the notification shown immediately after capture; some Android versions offer a direct Open, Edit, or Share action.
- Follow the handset manufacturer’s support instructions if neither Google Photos nor Gallery shows the image. Android implementations vary, and a vendor may use a different album name or storage location.
These steps find screenshots stored locally on the device. They do not guarantee that every capture is synchronized to a cloud account; synchronization depends on the backup settings for the photo app you use.
Find screenshots on a Mac
macOS saves screenshots to the desktop by default. Look there first for files with names such as “Screenshot” followed by the date and time.
Check or change the destination
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot controls.
- Click Options.
- Look at the Save to section to see the current destination.
- Select a different folder if you want future screenshots stored elsewhere.
macOS Mojave 10.14 and later also include the Screenshot app in Applications > Utilities. A changed Save to setting explains many “missing” screenshots: the file may be in Documents, Downloads, Mail, Messages, or another folder selected previously.
Mac capture methods that do not create a desktop file
If you used a selection tool and copied the image to the clipboard instead of saving it, there may be no screenshot file to find. Paste it into Preview, Notes, an image editor, or another app and save it manually. A screenshot inserted directly into a document is stored with that document rather than as a separate desktop image.

Find screenshots on Windows
Windows has more than one built-in capture route. Identify the shortcut or app you used before searching.
Windows key + Print Screen
A capture made with Windows key + Print Screen is normally saved in:
File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots
- Open File Explorer.
- Select Pictures in the navigation pane.
- Open Screenshots.
If your Pictures folder has been moved to OneDrive or another location, the displayed path may differ even though the folder is still named Screenshots.
Snipping Tool
Snipping Tool captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder, and the app also lets you save a snip to a folder and filename of your choice.
- Open Snipping Tool and take the capture.
- When the preview appears, use Save if you want to choose a specific location or filename.
- If you already saved it, check the folder shown by the save dialog or search File Explorer for the filename.
A snip copied to the clipboard without being saved will not appear as a file. Paste it into Paint, Photos, Word, or another application and save it.

Other Windows shortcuts
Print Screen by itself commonly copies the screen to the clipboard rather than creating a file. Windows key + Shift + S opens the snipping overlay; whether a file is created automatically depends on the Snipping Tool version and its save behavior. If no file appears, use the notification or open Snipping Tool and save the capture explicitly.
Find screenshots on a Chromebook
Chromebook screenshots are saved to Downloads by default.

- Select Downloads.
- Look for the newest image, or use the Files search field to search for screenshot.
Check or change the Chromebook folder
- Press Shift-Ctrl-Show windows to open Screen Capture.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Select folder.
- Review or change the destination for future screenshots.
If Downloads is empty, the destination may have been changed to Google Drive, an external drive, or another folder. The Files app search can locate the image after you know it was saved.
Why a screenshot may seem to be missing
You used a different capture method
A keyboard shortcut, a dedicated utility, a browser extension, and a capture pasted to the clipboard can have different outcomes. First identify whether the result should be a file, a photo-library item, or clipboard content.
The destination was changed
Mac Screenshot’s Options, Chromebook Screen Capture’s Select folder, and Snipping Tool’s save dialog all allow a different destination. Recheck those settings instead of assuming the default folder is still active.

You are searching the wrong type of location
iPhone and iPad screenshots are grouped in Photos, while Mac, Windows, and Chromebook screenshots are normally image files in folders. Android can expose screenshots through either a photo app or a file manager. Use the library or file system appropriate to that platform.

Clipboard captures disappear from the clipboard when you copy something else or restart. Paste the image into an app immediately and save it if you need a permanent file.
The image was saved under an unexpected name or date
Sort the relevant folder by Date modified or Date added. On phones, the screenshot may be grouped by the time it was captured rather than the time you noticed it. On computers, search for common image extensions such as PNG or JPEG if a filename search fails.

No. The locations above describe local Photos libraries and folders. Cloud backup or synchronization depends on the account and backup settings for the app you use.
