Preview on macOS can scale and print an image, but it does not document the same automatic poster-tiling workflow.
What you are making
A scrolling screenshot is usually one very tall raster image. Normal “fit to page” printing shrinks that image until its text is difficult to read, while ordinary cropping can lose content. The reliable approach is to place the complete image on one oversized PDF page and then tile that page onto several physical-size pages.
- Input: one long PNG, JPEG, or an existing PDF page containing the screenshot.
- Output: one multipage PDF (or printed stack) in reading order.
- Best general workflow: Acrobat’s Poster option, because it automatically calculates the tiles and exposes scale, overlap, cut-mark, and label controls.
If your screenshot is already a PDF, start at the print step. If it is an image, open it in Acrobat or first create a one-page PDF containing the image at its full proportions.
Adobe Acrobat: split the screenshot with Poster tiling
1. Put the screenshot on one PDF page
Open the screenshot in Acrobat. If Acrobat does not open the image directly in your installation, create a PDF from the image using your operating system’s image-to-PDF command, then open that PDF. Keep the image’s aspect ratio; do not crop it to a paper rectangle before tiling.

2. Open the print dialog
- Windows: choose Menu > Print.
- macOS: choose File > Print.
- In Page Sizing & Handling, select Poster.
Poster mode splits a single large page across multiple sheets. The preview changes as you alter the settings, so you can verify the result before committing to paper or a PDF destination.
3. Choose Tile Scale
Tile Scale controls how large the screenshot appears on each sheet:
- A higher percentage preserves larger text and interface details but creates more pages.
- A lower percentage uses fewer sheets but can make small text harder to read.
- 100%: retains the source scale. It may require many pages when the screenshot is exceptionally tall or wide.
Use the preview rather than guessing. Zoom into the smallest text that matters, then increase the scale until that text is readable at the intended viewing distance. If the page count becomes impractical, reduce the scale one step and inspect again.
4. Add overlap, cut marks, and labels when needed
- Overlap: adds a shared margin between adjacent tiles. It is useful when sheets will be taped or trimmed together, because a small amount of duplicated content makes alignment easier.
- Cut marks: prints trimming guides so you can remove consistent edges before assembly.
- Labels: identifies the source filename and page/tile information, helping you restore order after printing.
For a document that will simply be read as separate pages, overlap and cut marks are optional. For a wall-size or continuous printout, enable both and keep labels until the assembly is complete.

5. Check orientation, paper, and page order
Choose the physical paper size your printer uses—normally Letter in the United States or A4 in many other regions. A tall screenshot often works best with portrait sheets, while a wide screenshot may need landscape orientation. Check every tile in the preview for:
- unexpected blank pages at the bottom or right edge;
- content clipped by an incorrect orientation or paper size;
- an awkward page break through a heading, table, or code line;
- the correct left-to-right and top-to-bottom order.
6. Print or create the multipage PDF
Send the job to your physical printer for a paper set. If your platform exposes a PDF destination, select it instead to create a multipage PDF file. Keep the order shown in Acrobat’s preview; the resulting pages are the tiles that make up the original long image.
How to choose a readable page count

Do not judge readability from a fit-to-window preview alone. Open the generated PDF at 100% or print one test tile at the final paper size. The important question is whether the smallest information a reader needs remains readable without excessive zooming.
macOS Preview: useful for scaling, not automatic poster tiling
Preview can open an image or PDF, print selected pages, scale an image or page, and print multiple pages per sheet. In the print dialog’s Preview section, choose Scale and enter a percentage when you need a specific size.

Keep the entire screenshot visible
- Select Print Entire Image when preserving every part of the long screenshot matters.
- Fill Entire Paper fits the paper proportions by filling the sheet and can crop portions of an image; do not use it when the complete screenshot must remain visible.
Preview’s documented controls do not include Acrobat’s dedicated automatic Poster command for cutting one very tall image into a sequence of tiles. You can still make a PDF from scaled pages or manually prepare sections, but Acrobat is easier for a single long screenshot that needs automatic pagination.

Troubleshooting common failures
The PDF has only one tiny page
Cause: the image was fit to a normal page before tiling, or Poster was not selected. Reopen the oversized source, choose Page Sizing & Handling > Poster, and set Tile Scale again.
Text is unreadably small
Cause: Tile Scale is too low. Increase it and accept additional sheets. Verify at 100% zoom or with one physical test page rather than relying on a zoomed-out preview.
Edges or the bottom of the screenshot are missing
Cause: a crop-to-paper setting, incorrect orientation, or a source image that was trimmed before conversion. Recreate the one-page PDF without cropping, choose the matching paper orientation, and inspect the final tile in preview.

There are unexpected blank pages
Cause: the selected scale and paper dimensions produce an extra row or column, or the source page includes excess white space. Check the Poster preview, switch orientation if appropriate, and reduce unused margins in the source PDF.
The printed sheets do not line up
Cause: there is no shared joining margin, or the printer’s non-printable margins differ from the assumed layout. Enable Overlap and Cut marks, keep Labels until assembly, and trim only after confirming the order.
The pages are out of order
Cause: sheets were removed from the output stack before labels were checked. Use Acrobat’s preview order and Labels to number the tiles, then arrange them from the first row to the last, left to right within each row.
Preview cuts off part of the image
Cause: Fill Entire Paper uses the paper’s proportions and may crop the image. In Preview, choose Print Entire Image; for automatic multi-sheet tiling, move the job to Acrobat Poster.

When a clean screenshot or PDF should be captured first
If the source is a live website rather than a local image, capture the page before you tile it. Cookie-consent banners, newsletter prompts, and chat widgets can occupy valuable screenshot space and create awkward page breaks. A capture service can also wait for lazy-loaded content or a specific selector before producing the source image.
