Google Colab is a hosted Jupyter Notebook service: you can write and run Python notebooks in a browser without setting up a local environment, and may be able to use a GPU or TPU. The trade-off is that compute, accelerators, and session length are not guaranteed—especially on the free tier. Colab is a convenient place to learn, explore data, and try machine-learning code; it is not a promise of dependable, always-available compute.

What Google Colab is—and what it is not

Colab hosts notebooks based on the open-source Jupyter project. A notebook combines executable code, its output, and explanatory text in one document. You work through a browser rather than installing and maintaining the notebook server and its Python environment on your own computer. Google describes Colab as intended for machine learning, data science, and education.

This makes it useful for following a lesson, testing a small example, exploring a dataset, or iterating interactively on a model. You can share notebooks with other people, much as you share other Google documents. The notebook itself is not the same thing as a permanently running computer: its code executes on a runtime, and that runtime can disconnect or become unavailable.

Colab is built on Jupyter, but it is not simply a local Jupyter installation in a browser. Google manages the hosted runtime and its resource allocation. That removes setup work, but also means you do not control guaranteed machine specifications, quotas, or session duration.

Is Google Colab free?

Yes. Google offers Colab at no charge, but free access to compute is limited and variable. Google says resources are not guaranteed or unlimited, and it does not publish one universal set of usage limits because they change. In particular, free access to costly accelerators is restricted. Google says it prioritizes users who are actively programming in a notebook.

Think of the free tier as a useful way to learn and experiment, not a reserved server. It may be sufficient for a short lesson or a modest analysis; a longer or resource-intensive job can be interrupted, or you may not receive the accelerator you want. Do not plan an important deadline around an assumed quota or continuous session.

How long can a Colab session run?

Google’s current FAQ states that free-tier notebooks can run for at most 12 hours, depending on availability and usage patterns. This is a stated maximum, not a session-length guarantee. Idle timeouts, maximum virtual-machine lifetime, usage limits, and available resources can vary.

Colab Pro, Pro+, and Pay As You Go can offer greater availability, subject to compute-unit balance and other conditions. Pro+ supports continuous code execution for up to 24 hours when enough compute units remain. Paid users may fall back to free-tier policies when their balance is exhausted. Neither figure means a particular notebook is guaranteed to stay connected for that entire period.

How to reduce disruption

  • Save notebook changes and important outputs rather than treating a live runtime as permanent storage.
  • Make long-running work restartable: save intermediate results and avoid relying on one uninterrupted execution.
  • Check the live Colab FAQ and the plan details shown in your account before scheduling work around a limit. Policies and availability can change.
  • If the job needs guaranteed resources or predictable execution, consider a user-managed local runtime, Google Cloud Marketplace, or Colab Enterprise instead of relying on a hosted free session.

Can you use a GPU or TPU in Colab?

Colab may provide access to GPUs and TPUs, but the types available change, and access is not guaranteed. A runtime configured with a GPU does not mean your program is using it: the library, model, and operations must support the accelerator, and code may still execute on the CPU.

Choose an accelerator only when the workload benefits from it. If your code does not use the GPU, Google recommends switching back to a standard runtime. This avoids consuming scarce accelerator availability unnecessarily. For machine-learning examples, follow the library’s device-selection instructions and verify that the model or tensor operations are assigned to the intended device; the runtime selection alone is not proof.

When an accelerator is worth selecting

  • Use one when the workload and software stack can take advantage of parallel accelerator computation, such as many neural-network training tasks.
  • For lightweight scripting, data cleaning, or code that is not accelerator-enabled, begin with a standard runtime.
  • Do not assume a specific GPU or TPU model, memory profile, or availability from one session to the next.
  • If a job requires a particular accelerator consistently, use an environment where you can reserve or specify the resources rather than treating Colab availability as a guarantee.

Colab free, paid Colab, or your own compute?

The right choice depends less on a headline runtime maximum than on whether you need predictable resources, how much setup you can manage, and whether the plan’s compute-unit balance will cover your work. Google’s official materials describe paid Colab options and eligible Google AI plan benefits, but do not establish one universal price table or globally available offer. Check the current offer in your region and account; do not infer a fixed amount of runtime from a compute-unit balance.

Option Resource access Setup and administration Drive mounting Best fit
Free Colab Variable and not guaranteed; usage limits and accelerator availability can change. Hosted by Google; minimal local setup. Available in Colab’s managed environment. Learning, tutorials, exploration, and work that can tolerate interruptions.
Colab Pro, Pro+, or Pay As You Go Can provide increased availability, subject to availability and compute-unit balance; paid users may return to free-tier policies when balance is exhausted. Hosted by Google; check the plan and balance in your account. Available in Colab’s managed environment. Users who want more Colab capacity but can still work within usage conditions.
Eligible Google AI plan benefits Some eligible plans may include monthly Colab compute units, access to more powerful accelerators, or background execution on higher plans. Benefits vary by plan and region. Depends on the qualifying plan and account. Available in Colab’s managed environment. People whose existing eligible plan includes benefits that match their notebook needs.
Google Cloud Marketplace or Colab Enterprise Google points to these for workloads needing guaranteed resources without Colab-enforced usage limits; select resources and costs through the relevant offering. More configuration and administration than a hosted notebook session. Google warns that Drive mounting on the runtime filesystem does not work with these alternatives. Work that needs a more managed cloud setup or dependable resource allocation.
Local runtime Uses the machine and hardware you control; capacity depends on that machine. You install, configure, secure, and maintain the runtime. Google warns that Drive mounting on the runtime filesystem does not work with this alternative. Users who want control over the environment and can manage local setup.

Eligible paid Google AI plans are not the same as storage-only Google One plans, and benefits are not included with free trials. A Colab-native subscription and an eligible Google AI plan may coexist, with compute units added to the same balance. Regional eligibility and plan details matter, so verify what applies to your account rather than relying on an old price or offer description.

Colab vs. Jupyter: which should you use?

Jupyter is the open-source notebook project; Colab is Google’s hosted service built on it. The practical choice is between convenience and control, not between two incompatible notebook formats.

  • Choose Colab when you want to start in a browser, follow shared examples, avoid local installation, or use an accelerator if one is available.
  • Choose a local Jupyter environment when you need to manage packages, hardware, files, and runtime behavior directly, and are comfortable maintaining that setup.
  • Choose a managed cloud environment when resource guarantees or operational requirements matter more than the simplicity of a free interactive session.

Also consider how you will handle dependencies, data access, persistence, and collaboration. A notebook that works in one runtime may depend on installed packages or files that are absent in another. Record setup steps and keep important inputs and outputs somewhere durable rather than assuming they live indefinitely on the runtime.

Using Colab for machine learning and data science

Colab is well suited to interactive work: load a sample dataset, inspect it, run a short experiment, and explain results alongside the code. It is also convenient for teaching because a learner can open a notebook without first building a matching local environment.

For larger experiments, design around runtime variability. Keep data sizes manageable, checkpoint work, and make cells safe to rerun where possible. Be explicit about package installation and random seeds when reproducibility matters, but remember that identical notebook code does not guarantee identical hardware availability or a long-lived runtime. For production workloads, reproducibility, monitoring, and predictable capacity usually require a separately managed deployment rather than a Colab tab.

Generative AI features, privacy, and generated code

Google’s Colab FAQ says its generative AI features collect prompts, related code, generated output, related feature-usage information, and feedback. Human reviewers may read, annotate, and process this material to improve and develop Google products and machine-learning technologies. Google says this information is stored so it can no longer identify who provided it or fulfill deletion requests, and is retained for up to 18 months. Do not include sensitive or identifying personal information in these AI interactions.

Google’s Additional Terms describe Colab’s generative code features as experimental. They put responsibility on the user to test and review suggested code or coding explanations for errors, bugs, and vulnerabilities, and to comply with applicable open-source license requirements. Treat generated code as a draft to inspect, not as automatically correct, secure, or license-cleared. The Additional Terms page displays a May 14, 2024 modification date; consult the current terms for the rules that apply when you use the feature.

What you should not use managed free runtimes for

Google’s FAQ lists restricted activities on managed free runtimes, including remote control, bypassing the notebook interface to primarily interact through a web UI, chess training, and distributed-computing workers without a positive compute-unit balance. The examples matter because a notebook can be technically capable of running code that is not permitted under the service’s rules. Check the current FAQ before building a workflow near a listed restriction; do not assume that a use is allowed simply because it runs.

Common problems and practical fixes

The runtime disconnects or stops during work

Cause: session limits, idle timeout, changing availability, or usage restrictions. Save intermediate work, make the task restartable, and check current limits. If a job cannot tolerate interruption, move it to an environment with resources and execution characteristics suited to that requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A GPU is selected, but the job is still slow

Cause: selecting an accelerator does not make CPU-only code use it. Confirm that the relevant library and operations support the device and that the model or tensors are actually assigned to it. If the workload does not benefit from a GPU, switch to a standard runtime.

The expected GPU or TPU is unavailable

Cause: accelerator types and availability vary; a particular device is not guaranteed. Try again later if the task is flexible, or use a service where you can arrange the resources your workload requires.

A paid plan does not provide more runtime

Cause: paid access is conditional, and compute-unit balance, availability, plan eligibility, and regional offers affect what is available. Check your account’s current plan and balance. Do not treat a subscription or a compute-unit amount as unlimited runtime.

Drive mounting does not work with an alternative runtime

Cause: Google warns that Drive mounting on the runtime filesystem does not work with local runtimes, Google Cloud Marketplace, or Colab Enterprise alternatives. Use a data-access and storage method supported by the environment you chose instead of assuming Colab’s managed-runtime Drive integration will carry over.

Generated code runs but behaves unexpectedly

Cause: AI-generated suggestions can contain mistakes, bugs, or vulnerabilities. Review the code, test it against expected cases, and check dependencies and licensing before relying on it.

Or skip the browser setup

If what you need is a website screenshot rather than notebook compute, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server—not a Colab runtime replacement. One GET request can return an image or PDF. The API can remove cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. See the ScreenshotNeo site and API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Colab on a Chromebook?

Colab runs in a web browser, so a Chromebook with a supported browser and internet connection can open notebooks. The computation runs in Colab’s hosted runtime, not necessarily on the Chromebook itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Colab offline?

The hosted Colab environment requires internet access to use its notebooks and runtimes. For offline notebook work, use a locally installed Jupyter environment instead.
