Use two MCP servers together: a web-search server to discover relevant pages, and Playwright MCP to open those pages and interact with them. Playwright MCP gives the model structured accessibility snapshots and element references, so an agent can navigate, inspect, type, click, and extract results without relying on pixel coordinates. The minimum setup is Node.js 20 or newer, an MCP-compatible client, and a client entry that runs npx @playwright/mcp@latest.
What the combination does
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the interface between an AI client and tools. A search MCP server returns queries, links, snippets, or other search results. Playwright MCP supplies a browser that can visit those links and operate the resulting pages. They are complementary rather than interchangeable: search discovers candidates; browser automation verifies, filters, submits forms, and reads pages that require interaction.
Playwright MCP is an official Model Context Protocol server built on Playwright. Instead of sending only a screenshot, it exposes a structured accessibility snapshot containing roles, visible text, and references for interactive elements. A model can receive a textbox reference such as e5, then pass that reference to a typing or clicking action. After navigation or a state change, it can request another snapshot and continue from the updated page state.
Prerequisites and the smallest working setup
- Node.js 20 or newer.
- An MCP client such as VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, or another compatible client.
- A trusted browser profile and target sites. Do not place production credentials in an untrusted profile.
Add Playwright MCP to your client

Restart or reload the client so it starts the server. Then issue a plain-language request such as “navigate to the site, inspect the page, and add a todo item.” The client invokes the server, receives an accessibility snapshot, and uses the returned references for subsequent actions.
Add a search server separately
Install or configure the web-search MCP server you intend to use in the same MCP client. Its configuration and authentication depend on that server, so keep its entry separate from Playwright’s. In a typical task, ask the model to search first, select a result, open it with Playwright, and inspect the page before taking an action. This separation makes it clear whether a failure came from search or from browser control.
A reliable search-to-browser workflow
- Define the search objective. State the subject, geography, date range, and what counts as a useful result. Precise criteria reduce irrelevant browser work.
- Run the search MCP tool. Ask for result titles, URLs, and snippets. Treat snippets as leads, not verified evidence.
- Open a candidate with Playwright. Tell the client to navigate to the selected URL using the browser tool.
- Inspect the snapshot. Request the current accessibility snapshot. Identify headings, links, textboxes, buttons, and their element references.
- Interact by reference. Pass the reference to the appropriate action, such as typing into a search box, clicking a filter, or submitting a form. Avoid guessing coordinates.
- Refresh state after every major change. Navigation, modal dialogs, pagination, and client-side rendering can invalidate old references. Take a new snapshot before the next dependent action.
- Capture and verify the result. Ask the model to quote the relevant text, record the final URL, and note whether the page loaded successfully or requires authentication.
This loop—navigate, snapshot, act on a reference, snapshot again—is the key difference between browser automation through MCP and a one-off screenshot.
Choose Playwright MCP capabilities deliberately
Core browser automation is always enabled. It includes navigation and snapshot tools such as browser_navigate, browser_navigate_back, and browser_snapshot. Optional capability groups expand the server’s scope.
| Capability group | Use it when | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Navigate pages, inspect accessibility state, and perform ordinary interactions. | Smallest tool surface and simplest trust boundary. |
| Vision | The task depends on visual information that is not represented well in the accessibility tree. | Adds visual tooling and a larger permission surface. |
| Generate or inspect PDF output from a page. | Enable only for workflows that need document output. | |
| DevTools | Diagnose browser-level behavior during development. | Powerful diagnostics are unnecessary for routine browsing. |
| Network | Inspect or control network activity while debugging or testing. | Network visibility can expose sensitive request data. |
| Storage | Work with browser storage as part of a controlled test. | Stored cookies and tokens require stronger isolation. |
| Testing | Run repeatable browser-test workflows. | Keep test state separate from personal browsing state. |
| Configuration | Adjust server or browser behavior exposed by the configuration options. | More configuration means more settings to audit and maintain. |
Enable optional groups with the --caps=... option (or the equivalent setting in your client). For example, a client command can request vision and PDF capabilities with npx @playwright/mcp@latest --caps=vision,pdf. Start with core capabilities and add groups only when a workflow demonstrably needs them.

Connect to a new browser or an existing Chrome session
Managed browser started by the MCP server
The standard npx @playwright/mcp@latest entry lets the server manage its browser context. This is the safest default for automation because the context can be dedicated to the task rather than mixed with personal tabs, extensions, and cookies.
Attach to an existing Chromium session
If the required login or tab already exists in Chromium, run the server with a Chrome DevTools Protocol endpoint, for example --cdp-endpoint=chrome. The client then connects Playwright MCP to that browser instead of creating a separate managed session. Verify which tabs and cookies are exposed before using this mode; an attached profile may contain email, payment, or administration sessions.
Share one browser context across clients
When several MCP clients must work in the same context, the options documentation provides --shared-browser-context. Use this only when shared state is intentional. Otherwise, separate contexts prevent one agent from changing another agent’s page, cookies, or local storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRun the server separately over HTTP
For a headed deployment, a remote host, or a team service, run the server with HTTP transport and configure the MCP client to use its /mcp endpoint. Place the browser host, network access, and credentials inside a controlled environment; an HTTP endpoint should not be exposed publicly without authentication and transport protection.
Accessibility snapshots versus screenshots
A snapshot is structured page state: roles, text, and references that an LLM can reason over and reuse in the next action. It is usually the right representation for searching a page, filling a form, or activating a control. A screenshot is a visual artifact. It is useful for visual review, documentation, regression evidence, and cases where layout or canvas content matters, but it does not by itself provide a stable control reference. Playwright MCP can use optional vision capabilities when visual understanding is required; keep core snapshot-based interaction as the default.

Security boundary and safe operating practices
Playwright MCP can run arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process; the getting-started documentation describes this as RCE-equivalent. Enable it only for trusted MCP clients. Treat the following as one trust boundary:
- The MCP client and every server it can invoke.
- The browser executable, profile directory, extensions, cookies, and local storage.
- The machine or container hosting the server.
- The sites and accounts the browser is allowed to access.
Use a dedicated profile for automation, least-privilege accounts, and a separate context for untrusted sites. Do not attach to a personal Chromium profile merely to avoid logging in again. If you deploy over HTTP, restrict network access and require authentication. Review prompts that ask the agent to upload files, submit payments, change account settings, or execute JavaScript.

The client shows no Playwright tools
Confirm Node.js is version 20 or newer, that the JSON entry is valid, and that the client was restarted after editing its configuration. Check the client’s MCP log for an npx startup error. Running the same command in a terminal can reveal a missing Node installation or a network restriction that prevents package retrieval.
An element reference no longer works
References belong to the current page state. Navigate, open a dialog, submit a form, or trigger a client-side render, then request browser_snapshot again and use the new reference. Do not keep retrying a stale identifier.
The page appears empty or incomplete
Wait for the page to finish loading, inspect a fresh snapshot, and verify that the URL is correct. Some pages require a login, block automation, or render content only after a user action. Use a dedicated authenticated test profile when you have permission, and report an access block rather than attempting to bypass it.

CDP attachment connects to the wrong browser
Check that the endpoint named by --cdp-endpoint points to the intended Chromium instance and that the session is running with the expected profile. Close unrelated windows or use a dedicated automation launch so the model cannot act on an unintended tab.

Search results are useful but the target page cannot be controlled
Search and browser access are independent. A result may redirect, require authentication, present a bot check, or expose little accessible content. Record the final URL and the observed limitation, then try another result or a permitted authenticated context instead of treating the snippet as proof.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, reliability, and operating cost
Accessibility snapshots are generally more compact and actionable than repeatedly sending full screenshots, but every navigation and page interaction still consumes browser CPU, memory, network bandwidth, and model context. Limit searches to the candidates you need, avoid enabling unused capability groups, and take snapshots after meaningful state changes rather than after every trivial event. For repeatable jobs, use a clean profile, deterministic starting URL, explicit waits in the task instructions, and a fresh context when state contamination would change the result.
There is no universal cost figure for a search MCP server or for your model provider; quotas and billing depend on the selected services. Budget separately for search calls, model tokens, browser compute, and any authenticated infrastructure. A failed browser action can still consume model and compute resources even when it produces no useful page content.
