Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo click a link that loads a new page with Pyppeteer, start page.waitForNavigation() and the click at the same time with asyncio.gather. Waiting only after clicking can miss the navigation event. Once the next page is ready, use page.content() for its HTML or page.evaluate() to extract specific data. If the site updates results without a full navigation, wait for a changed selector, URL, request, response, or other page-specific signal instead.
Click and wait for the next page without missing navigation
Pyppeteer is an unofficial Python port of Puppeteer. Its API follows Puppeteer patterns, but confirm the API and options supported by your installed Pyppeteer version when adapting examples. The documented race-free pattern is to register the navigation wait before or concurrently with the click:
await asyncio.gather(
page.waitForNavigation({"waitUntil": "networkidle0"}),
page.click("a.next")
)
asyncio.gather matters because navigation may begin immediately when the click occurs. If the code waits for navigation only after clicking, the event can already have fired. Pyppeteer’s API reference documents the combined wait-and-click pattern.
Choose a selector that identifies the actual link or button. Prefer stable attributes such as data-*, semantic roles, or accessible labels over generated class names that may change when the site is redeployed. If the link is inside a frame, the main page’s selector may not find it; select the appropriate frame and interact there.

Runnable scraper for pages with a Next link
This async generator visits each page, waits for visible results, extracts their text, and stops when the Next control is missing or disabled. Replace the URL and selectors with ones from the site you are permitted to access.
import asyncio
from pyppeteer import launch
async def scrape_pages(start_url: str, next_selector: str, item_selector: str):
browser = await launch()
page = await browser.newPage()
try:
await page.goto(start_url, {"waitUntil": "load"})
while True:
await page.waitForSelector(item_selector, {"visible": True})
items = await page.evaluate(
"""selector => Array.from(
document.querySelectorAll(selector),
el => el.innerText
)""",
item_selector,
)
for item in items:
yield item
next_button = await page.querySelector(next_selector)
if next_button is None:
break
disabled = await page.evaluate(
"""el => el.disabled ||
el.getAttribute('aria-disabled') === 'true'""",
next_button,
)
if disabled:
break
await asyncio.gather(
page.waitForNavigation({"waitUntil": "networkidle0"}),
page.click(next_selector),
)
finally:
await browser.close()
async def main():
async for item in scrape_pages(
"https://example.com/results",
"a[rel='next']",
"article.result",
):
print(item)
if __name__ == "__main__":
asyncio.run(main())
The extraction expression returns each matching element’s innerText as a Python list. Change it to return attributes or structured values when needed. For example, a result link can be extracted as objects containing both its visible text and href. Use await page.content() instead when the complete current HTML document is what you need.
What the loop assumes
- The initial page loads, and the result selector appears before extraction.
- The Next control performs a conventional page navigation. If it updates the current document in place, replace the navigation wait as described below.
- A missing or disabled Next control means the sequence is finished. If a site indicates the final page some other way, adapt the termination check.
- The result selector matches only the items you want; broad selectors can collect navigation labels, hidden templates, or unrelated content.
Handle pagination that does not navigate
Many sites replace a result list with JavaScript while keeping the same document loaded. In that case, waitForNavigation is not the right readiness signal and may resolve with None. Click the control, then wait for evidence that the desired update has completed.

- Result selector: wait for a known element to appear, disappear, or change. If the same selector exists before and after the click, wait for a meaningful text or attribute change rather than mere presence.
- Loading state: wait for a loading indicator to disappear, then confirm that the result list has refreshed.
- URL: use a URL predicate if pagination changes the query string or path through client-side routing.
- Request or response: wait for the request or response associated with the result list when the page fetches data asynchronously.
- Function: use
waitForFunctionfor a page condition, such as a changed page number or a result count reaching an expected value.
Pyppeteer documents waitForSelector, waitForFunction, waitForRequest, and waitForResponse for these cases in its API reference. A basic in-place update pattern looks like this:
old_text = await page.evaluate(
"""selector => document.querySelector(selector)?.innerText""",
"article.result",
)
await page.click("button.next")
await page.waitForFunction(
"""(selector, previous) => {
const el = document.querySelector(selector);
return el && el.innerText !== previous;
}""",
{},
"article.result",
old_text,
)
This example assumes the first result's text changes when the page advances. If results can legitimately begin with identical text, wait for a page indicator, URL change, response, or another condition that uniquely confirms the update. A wait that only checks whether the result selector exists can finish immediately against the old content.
Choose the right readiness and extraction signals
Navigation waits
For a full navigation, pair the click with waitForNavigation. The waitUntil option controls when the navigation wait considers the page ready; networkidle0 waits for network activity to become idle, but pages with persistent requests may not reach that state promptly. Choose a readiness condition suited to the site and verify the content you plan to scrape is present.

Selector and function waits
For results rendered after navigation or updated in place, wait for the specific content you need. waitForSelector can require visibility; waitForFunction can test a state change. These waits avoid treating a loaded document as proof that asynchronously rendered results are ready.
URL, request, and response waits
For client-side routing, a URL change can indicate a new page state. For data-driven pagination, a request or response can indicate that the list fetch occurred, but the response alone may arrive before the browser has rendered its contents. When necessary, follow it with a selector or function wait. Select the narrowest signal that represents usable results, not merely activity.

Timeouts, stopping conditions, and cleanup
Pyppeteer's documented default timeout is 30 seconds. Set a timeout that reflects the target site's expected behavior; the API reference says it can be changed or disabled with 0. Disabling timeouts may leave a scraper waiting indefinitely, so use it only when you have another reliable cancellation or stopping mechanism.
- Stop when the Next control is absent, disabled, or marked
aria-disabled="true", as in the example. - For in-place pagination, detect an unchanged URL or result state. Do not repeatedly click a control when the page has not advanced.
- On a timeout, record the current URL and the selector or condition being awaited. This makes selector changes and site behavior easier to diagnose.
- Put browser shutdown in a
finallyblock. It runs even when navigation, extraction, or a timeout raises an exception.
Troubleshoot missed pages and stalled scrapers
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Click succeeds, but the scraper reads the old page | The click was not synchronized with navigation, or the site updated content asynchronously. | For full navigation, use asyncio.gather(page.waitForNavigation(...), page.click(...)). For in-place updates, wait for a changed result, URL, request, or response. |
| Navigation wait times out after clicking Next | The control updates the DOM without a full navigation, or the chosen readiness condition does not occur. | Use a page-specific selector or function wait for in-place updates. If there is navigation, choose a suitable waitUntil condition and verify the target content separately. |
| Selector wait times out | The selector is wrong or changed, results are not visible yet, or the page did not reach the expected state. | Log the URL, inspect the current page with page.content(), and confirm the selector against the live DOM. Prefer stable attributes and set an appropriate timeout. |
| Loop repeats the same results | The click did not advance, or the wait condition only confirmed old content was present. | Check the disabled state and compare a page indicator, URL, or result value before and after clicking. Stop or raise an error if the expected change does not occur. |
| Browser processes remain after errors | Shutdown was skipped on an exception. | Keep await browser.close() in a finally block. |
Make scraping reliable and responsible
Pagination is sensitive to changes in selectors, timing, and site behavior. Keep selectors specific, distinguish full navigations from in-place updates, and make the readiness condition reflect the data you need. A timeout is a failure to observe the expected event within the chosen interval, not proof that the page is empty. Log enough context to tell a site change from a slow response, and avoid retry loops that keep clicking without confirming progress.
Scrape only content you are permitted to access. Respect the site's terms, robots guidance, authentication boundaries, and request rate; obtain permission before scraping restricted content. Do not treat a successful browser interaction as authorization to collect or reuse data.

If you need a screenshot rather than extracted text or structured records, ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it does not replace Pyppeteer when you need to click through pagination and scrape DOM values.
For a single-page capture, install the Python requests package and run:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo's free plan to try it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Pyppeteer click a link that opens a new tab?
The examples here cover navigation in the page being controlled. A link that opens a separate page requires handling that new target and using its page object; the exact event and API details depend on the installed Pyppeteer version.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does Pyppeteer work with every website?
No. A site may require authentication, interaction in a frame, or behavior beyond the simple pagination patterns shown. Confirm that you have permission to access and scrape its content.
