Right-click the page item you want to examine and choose Inspect (or Inspect Element). Your browser opens developer tools with that node selected. In Chrome and Edge, use the Elements panel; in Firefox, use Inspector; in Safari, use Web Inspector and its Elements view. You can inspect the live DOM, applied CSS, layout, and accessibility details, and test edits locally. Those edits are previews only—they do not change the published website.

How do I inspect an element in my browser?

  1. Open the page on a desktop browser.
  2. Right-click (or Control-click on a Mac) the visible element, such as a heading, image, button, or form field.
  3. Select Inspect or Inspect Element.
  4. In the developer-tools DOM tree, confirm that the corresponding node is highlighted.
  5. Open the Styles, Computed, Layout, or accessibility views to understand why it looks or behaves as it does.

If the context menu is unavailable, open developer tools first and activate the element picker (the cursor-in-a-box icon), then click the element on the page.

Chrome: open the Elements panel

Fastest method

Right-click the target and choose Inspect. Chrome opens DevTools with the matching node selected in Elements.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS: Ctrl+Shift+C opens DevTools in inspect mode.
  • macOS: Command+Option+C opens DevTools in inspect mode.

Click an item with the picker to pause inspection on that node. Expand parent and child nodes in the DOM tree to see the page structure.

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

What to use after selecting a node

  • Styles: lists matching CSS rules, source files, specificity, inheritance, overridden declarations, and inactive properties. Untick a declaration to test its effect, or click a value to edit it.
  • Computed: shows the final resolved values Chrome is rendering, including inherited values. Search this list for a property such as display, width, or font-family.
  • Event listeners: reveals handlers attached to the node or its ancestors.
  • DOM breakpoints: pauses scripts when a child, attribute, or subtree changes.
  • Accessibility: exposes the accessibility tree and properties such as role, name, and state.

Changes made in Elements are immediately visible in your tab, which makes the panel useful for testing spacing, colors, responsive behavior, and selector hypotheses before editing source code.

Safari: enable Web Inspector first

Turn on the Develop menu

  1. Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings (called Preferences in some releases).
  2. Open Advanced.
  3. Enable Show features for web developers or Show Develop menu in menu bar, depending on the Safari version.

Inspect the element

Control-click the page item and choose Inspect Element, or open Develop > Show Web Inspector. In Web Inspector’s Elements view, select markup in the DOM tree to see the matching styles. Safari also provides Console, Sources, Network, Timelines, Storage, Graphics, Layers, and Audit tools.

Check responsive behavior

Use Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode to preview different screen sizes, orientations, resolutions, and user agents. This changes the simulated environment, not the site’s source.

Firefox: use the Inspector

Right-click the target and choose Inspect or Inspect Element. Firefox opens Web Developer Tools on the Inspector panel with the node selected. You can also open the browser menu, choose More tools > Web Developer Tools (wording can vary by release), and then select Inspector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firefox can dock tools at the bottom, left, or right of the window, open them in a separate window, and show the selected node’s markup and CSS. Use the rules view to test declarations and the computed view to find the final value that wins after the cascade.

Microsoft Edge: inspect with Elements

Open the context menu on the element and choose Inspect, or open DevTools and select the Inspect picker. Click the page item; Edge highlights its matching node in Elements. The overlay reports general and accessibility information while you move over candidates. Use the DOM tree and CSS panes to trace inherited and overridden rules.

Edge is Chromium-based, so many Chrome DevTools shortcuts and panel behaviors are similar, but menu labels and shortcuts can change with browser versions.

Other browsers and common shortcuts

Most desktop browsers expose the same basic route: open the browser menu’s developer-tools command, activate an element picker, and click the page item. Panel names differ—Chrome and Edge generally use Elements, while Firefox uses Inspector.

  • macOS commonly opens developer tools with Command+Option+I.
  • Windows commonly uses Ctrl+Shift+I or F12.

These are common conventions rather than guarantees; verify the shortcut in your browser and operating-system version if it does nothing. A right-click inspection command is usually the least ambiguous option.

How to read what the inspector shows

DOM versus source HTML

The tree represents the runtime DOM after scripts have run. It may differ from the original response HTML because JavaScript can insert, remove, or rewrite nodes. Inspect the live node when diagnosing what the visitor actually sees.

Finding the rule that wins

  1. Select the element and look at Styles or the equivalent rules pane.
  2. Find the property you care about, such as margin or color.
  3. Read the selector, source file, and line shown beside the declaration.
  4. Check crossed-out declarations: they lost to a more specific, later, or otherwise higher-priority rule.
  5. Open Computed to see the final value and, where supported, the chain leading to it.

Layout and accessibility clues

Box-model and layout overlays help distinguish padding, border, margin, flex, and grid sizing. Accessibility panes show information assistive technology may use, which can reveal a missing accessible name, incorrect role, or hidden state even when the visual design looks correct.

Testing edits without breaking the site

You can edit text nodes and attributes, add or remove classes, and change CSS declarations directly in developer tools. These edits last only in the current page session. Reloading normally discards them, and no other visitor sees them. To make a permanent change, update the site’s source code or CMS and save or deploy it through the normal workflow.

For a reproducible debugging note, record the URL, selected element, changed declaration, viewport size, and browser version. Avoid pasting secrets, session cookies, or private customer data into a shared bug report.

Troubleshooting inspection problems

“Inspect” is missing from the context menu

The page may disable its custom context menu, or you may be clicking a browser-controlled surface such as a PDF viewer, extension page, or embedded cross-origin frame. Open developer tools with the browser menu or shortcut, then use the picker. For an iframe, select the frame document if the browser permits access; cross-origin security boundaries can limit what you can inspect.

The wrong node is selected

Overlapping elements, pseudo-elements, and transparent overlays can intercept the click. Move the picker slowly, use the DOM tree’s parents and children, or use the tree search (often Ctrl+F/Command+F) for a distinctive class, text string, or attribute.

A CSS change has no visible effect

  • The declaration may be crossed out because another rule wins.
  • An inline style, !important, inheritance, or a later stylesheet may take precedence.
  • The property may not apply to that element or may be masked by a pseudo-element.
  • A script may immediately overwrite your edit.

Check Computed values, inspect the parent layout, and use a DOM breakpoint when JavaScript is changing the node.

Developer tools will not open

Managed computers can disable developer tools through policy. Private browsing, extensions, and security software can also alter behavior. Try a clean profile, another browser, or a personal device where you have permission. Do not bypass an organization’s controls.

Safari has no Web Inspector

Return to Safari’s Advanced settings and enable the Develop menu. Then reopen the page and choose Develop > Show Web Inspector. The exact checkbox text varies by Safari release.

Performance, privacy, and reliability notes

  • Opening tools can add overhead, especially with Network recording, performance timelines, or verbose console logging enabled. Turn those captures off when measuring page speed.
  • Reloading with developer tools open can change caching behavior. Note whether the request was served from cache when comparing loads.
  • Inspection can expose tokens, personal data, and internal URLs in the DOM or Network panel. Redact them before sharing screenshots or logs.
  • Browser tools show one runtime state: viewport, zoom, device emulation, logged-in account, consent choices, and feature flags all affect the result.

If you need a clean rendered image or PDF rather than an interactive DOM diagnosis, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page through one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

FAQ

Can I inspect a website on a phone or tablet?

Mobile browsers generally offer fewer built-in developer tools. For detailed inspection, use desktop DevTools with remote debugging for the device and browser you are testing.

Why can two browsers show different computed styles?

Different rendering engines, default stylesheets, font availability, and device settings can produce different computed values. Compare the same viewport, zoom, fonts, and page state before treating a difference as a CSS defect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an inspection reveal a site’s server-side code?

No. Developer tools expose data delivered to the browser—DOM, CSS, JavaScript, network responses, and runtime state—not server code or databases that never leave the server.
