A failed website screenshot usually comes down to one of three things: the page did not render, the capture method could not access it, or the capture happened at the wrong size or time. Diagnose which one you have before changing tools: check the page itself, then browser access and permissions, then resources and capture settings. The fixes below cover blank images, cut-off pages, missing content, and localhost or restricted pages.
Start with the symptom

These categories can overlap. For example, a capture can be full-page but still omit images that never loaded. Verify the rendered page and loaded resources before treating the screenshot tool as the cause.
Fix a blank or white screenshot
Check whether the page itself is blank
Look at the tab before taking another capture. If the page is white, stuck, or only partly rendered, the screenshot may simply reflect a browser rendering problem. Google’s Chrome troubleshooting guidance says a white or stuck page usually indicates a graphics-rendering issue. Reload the page, close other tabs, and restart Chrome or the device. If it keeps happening, collect browser debug logs and investigate the graphics problem rather than repeatedly changing screenshot settings. Google Chrome: Fix Chrome if it crashes or won’t open
Uncover the browser window
On Windows, Chrome may stop painting a browser window covered by another window. Google explains that Chrome detects window occlusion and “does not paint pixels on the covered page.” A screenshot taken while the window is covered can therefore be blank even though the page appears normal once brought forward. Expose the window and try again. On managed Windows installations, an administrator may need to review Chrome’s window-occlusion detection policy. Chrome Enterprise policy: WindowOcclusionEnabled

Check whether screen capture is blocked
On managed devices, policy can prevent screen capture. Google documents that when screen video capture is disallowed, Screenshare APIs fail with an error. If a capture or sharing tool reports an access error, ask the device administrator to check the applicable capture policy; changing page CSS or browser zoom will not override a policy restriction. Fix a screenshot that cuts off the page
Many capture methods save only the current viewport—the portion visible in the browser window. That is not a failed render; it is a mismatch between the requested scope and the capture mode. Use a browser’s full-page screenshot feature for a whole document. In Firefox DevTools, the screenshot command supports full-page capture, a CSS selector, a delay, and device-pixel-ratio control. Capture an entire page in Firefox
- Open the page in Firefox and open the Web Console with Ctrl+Shift+K on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Option+K on macOS.
- Enter
:screenshot --fullpageand press Enter. Firefox captures beyond the current window bounds. - To capture only a component, use
:screenshot --selector ".product-card", replacing the selector with a CSS selector that matches the element. - If content appears after a pause, add a delay, for example
:screenshot --fullpage --delay 2. For output density, use--dpras documented by Firefox, such as:screenshot --dpr 2.
Full-page capture is useful for long articles and pages, while selector capture is better for a particular panel or component. A selector that matches no element cannot produce the intended component image; check the spelling and confirm that the element exists in the page.

Fix missing images, fonts, and internal content
If text or layout appears but images or fonts do not, the browser likely could not load one or more resources. Userback identifies firewalls, localhost or development environments, CSP/CORS-related issues, and invalid HTML or CSS among common causes of broken screenshots. In the browser’s developer tools, look for failed image, font, or stylesheet requests and note the response or blocked-request message.
- Check firewall and host reachability. Confirm the browser or capture environment can reach the host serving each resource, including internal domains and development servers.
- Review CSP and cross-origin behavior. Check the page’s Content Security Policy and the relevant cross-origin response headers when resources come from another origin.
- Validate markup and CSS. Malformed HTML, invalid URLs, or styles that hide or cover content can make the result appear incomplete even when the capture itself succeeds.
- Use a native capture path for internal pages. Some extensions cannot accurately capture internal or restricted environments. Userback recommends using native screenshot functionality in that situation.
For a localhost page, make sure the page is open and working in the same browser session in which you are capturing it. A separate remote capture service cannot automatically see a development server bound only to your own computer; remote access requires an appropriately reachable URL and should not expose private services unintentionally.
Give dynamic content time to render
A screenshot records a moment in time. Menus, hover states, lazy-loaded images, and animations may not be ready at the instant a capture starts. Wait for the relevant state before taking the screenshot. Firefox’s --delay option is a simple way to allow a page to settle; for a component, combine a delay with --selector when appropriate. A longer delay does not fix a permanently blocked resource or a page that never loads, so check the rendered page and network activity as well.

Choose based on four practical questions: do you need the viewport, the whole page, or one element; can the method access the page, especially if it is local or restricted; have fonts, images, and lazy content actually rendered; and do you need repeatable controls such as delay, DPR, or consistent output? OS capture is appropriate for what is visible. Browser-native tools provide webpage-specific scope controls. Extensions trade setup effort for convenience, but their access is not universal.

When the screenshot still fails
- The page itself is blank or hung: reload, close other tabs, restart Chrome or the device, then investigate graphics rendering and collect browser debug logs if the issue persists.
- The page works only when the window is visible: keep the window uncovered during capture and have a managed-device administrator inspect Chrome policies.
- The capture reports a permissions error: check whether device policy blocks screen capture; use an authorized capture method rather than trying to bypass policy.
- The page is present but resources are absent: inspect failed network requests, firewall access, localhost reachability, CSP/CORS, and HTML/CSS.
- The bottom of the page is missing: switch from viewport to full-page capture; add a delay for content that appears later.
- An extension cannot capture an internal page: switch to browser-native capture, such as Firefox DevTools where applicable, or capture the visible window with the OS tool if a viewport is enough.
Common questions
Why does a screenshot show a blank page even though the site loads?
The capture may occur while Chrome is not painting a covered window, or the browser may have a graphics-rendering problem. Screen-capture policy can also block a capture method. Check the visible page, expose the window, and review managed-device restrictions.

Can Windows Snipping Tool capture a whole scrolling webpage?
It captures screen regions or the visible window or screen. For content beyond the viewport, use a browser full-page capture such as Firefox DevTools’ :screenshot --fullpage.
Why do screenshots miss fonts or images but show text?
The resources may have failed to load because of network access, firewall, localhost, CSP/CORS, or markup and CSS problems. Inspect the browser’s network requests to identify which resource failed.
Will a screenshot API capture a localhost site?
Not if the site is reachable only from your own computer. A remote service needs a target URL it can access; use a browser-native capture for a local-only page or make a properly secured environment reachable to the service.
