For SEO and paid-search research, use the Google Ads API’s Keyword Planning services, especially KeywordPlanIdeaService.GenerateKeywordIdeas. For an address or place search box, use Places Autocomplete (New). These products produce different data, have different targeting controls, and use different commercial models.
Which Google API should you use?
Choose the service from the output you need, not from the word “autocomplete.” Keyword Planning is for discovering and evaluating advertising keywords. Places Autocomplete is for returning predictions while a person types into a location-aware interface.

Google describes Keyword Planning as able to generate “keyword ideas, ad group themes, historical metrics, and forecast metrics.” Google Ads Help describes Keyword Planner as a tool for researching keywords for Search campaigns. Neither statement makes it a live feed of every phrase shown in Google Search’s consumer autocomplete box.
What KeywordPlanIdeaService provides
GenerateKeywordIdeas accepts keyword seeds, URL seeds, or both. You can apply language and geographic targets, select a network, control adult-keyword handling, paginate results, and request historical metrics. Historical metrics are advertising-oriented measurements; they are not a guarantee of organic ranking, traffic, or the exact suggestions a user sees in Search.

Keyword seeds
Pass a manageable list of phrases that describe the product, problem, audience or topic. A seed such as “invoice software” can produce related ideas, while several tightly related seeds can expose different intent clusters.
URL seeds
Use a relevant page or site URL when you want Google to infer ideas from page content. Review the returned ideas rather than assuming every phrase is an exact description of the page.
Historical and forecast metrics
Historical metrics help prioritize terms for research. Forecast metrics belong to campaign-planning scenarios: bids, budget, ad quality, location targeting, product, seasonality and user behavior affect the forecast. Treat forecasts as scenario outputs, not promises.

The Google Ads client library handles authentication and API transport. Install the library, create a Google Ads configuration with your developer and account credentials, then replace the marked identifiers in this example.

})Replace every INSERT_... value with an identifier valid for your account and targeting setup. To use a URL seed instead, populate the request’s URL-seed field according to the client-library version you installed; using both seed types is also supported. Keep the language and geographic target explicit so results are not silently mixed across markets.
Making the workflow useful
- Start small: submit a focused set of seeds or one relevant URL.
- Set language and geography: match the market you actually serve.
- Request historical metrics: use them to group and prioritize ideas.
- Cache results: Google says historical statistics refresh monthly and recommends caching because responses do not change frequently.
- Separate intent: label informational, commercial and navigational themes before mapping them to pages or campaigns.
- Use forecasts only for campaigns: record the bid, budget, location and other assumptions alongside the forecast.
Why Places Autocomplete is not a keyword-volume API
Places Autocomplete (New) is designed for a typing experience. Its required input is text. It returns a JSON response containing ordered predictions, normally place predictions; query predictions can be enabled with includeQueryPredictions. Optional controls include field masks, place types, region codes, location bias or restriction, and session tokens.
A place prediction tells your interface what a user might select. It does not provide the historical search counts, advertising competition or bid ranges returned by Keyword Planning. Conversely, Keyword Planning is not a drop-in endpoint for rendering a place picker.
Places Autocomplete (New) request
The endpoint is POST https://places.googleapis.com/v1/places:autocomplete. Supply an API key and a JSON body containing input. Request only the response fields your interface needs.

Add a location bias or restriction when your product should prefer a particular area, and use place-type filters when the input must resolve to a constrained class of place. Group the typing and selection phases with a session token when the applicable billing model calls for it.

Expecting Search suggestions
Places Autocomplete is not a general Google Search autocomplete feed. If your objective is SEO or paid-search discovery, move to Keyword Planning and evaluate its metrics.
Comparing unlike outputs
Do not rank a place prediction against an advertising keyword by search volume. One is an ordered UI prediction; the other is a campaign-research idea with advertising metrics.
Leaving targeting implicit
Missing language or geo targets in Keyword Planning can produce ideas that do not match your market. Missing region, type or location controls in Places can produce an interface that feels geographically wrong.

Requesting excessive fields
For Places, use a field mask and request only the prediction structures your client renders. For Keyword Planning, store the seed, targeting and metric settings with each result so later analysis remains reproducible.
Ignoring account and policy requirements
Quotas, billing, attribution, API terms and regional availability are product-specific and can change. Verify current requirements in the Google Ads or Maps Platform account you will deploy, rather than relying on a universal quota or price.

- Keyword Planning: cache historical-idea responses where practical; Google states that historical statistics refresh monthly and responses do not change frequently.
- Places: debounce keystrokes, avoid sending a request for every unchanged value, and use session tokens when the billing model calls for them.
- Credentials: keep Ads credentials and Maps API keys server-side where possible, restrict keys to the APIs and origins that need them, and monitor account-level usage.
- Forecasts: preserve assumptions such as bid, budget, location and seasonality with the output.
- Failure handling: retry transient transport errors with bounded backoff, but do not blindly retry rejected authentication, malformed-request or policy responses.
