Treat every endpoint as temporary and untrusted: normalize and deduplicate the feed, validate with short timeouts and low concurrency, keep TLS verification enabled, and never send credentials or private tokens through a free proxy.
A practical workflow
- Choose a documented source. Prefer a feed or API that exposes protocol, country, last-checked time, latency, uptime or anonymity metadata.
- Fetch at a bounded rate. Follow the source’s terms and avoid repeatedly downloading large HTML pages when a feed exists.
- Normalize records. Convert each entry to protocol, IP, port, country and timestamps. Reject malformed addresses.
- Deduplicate. Treat protocol, IP and port as the identity of a candidate.
- Validate safely. Test only an endpoint you own or are authorized to test, with separate connect and read timeouts.
- Store evidence. Keep status, latency, TLS result, failure reason and last-checked time so stale endpoints can be removed quickly.
- Stop when permission ends. Respect the target’s terms, robots guidance, rate limits and applicable law. Use an official API when one is available.
Where to find free public proxies
ProxyScrape’s machine-readable sources
ProxyScrape’s official repository publishes HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS4 and SOCKS5 data, including protocol and country shards. Depending on the feed, records can include anonymity, SSL, uptime, latency, ASN, ISP and the time the endpoint was last checked. Its README says the API updates every minute and the repository every five minutes. A page observed on September 29, 2026 displayed 4,792 endpoints: 1,455 HTTP, 559 HTTPS, 232 SOCKS4 and 3,105 SOCKS5 entries across 86 countries. Those counts are a snapshot, not a capacity guarantee.
For automation, select the narrowest shard that meets your need (for example, HTTPS-only or a country-specific feed), save the retrieval time, and retain the source’s metadata. Do not assume that a listed proxy is currently reachable.
HTML lists and Python libraries
If no feed is available, fetch only a documented public page and parse its table at a bounded rate. The freeproxy Python documentation demonstrates proxied sessions, named sources, ProxyInfo records and protocol-count aggregation. HTML parsing is more fragile than a feed: column order, pagination and anti-bot controls can change without notice. Cache a copy of each response and log parsing failures instead of silently producing an empty list.

Scrape and normalize a list with Python
The following script accepts a documented source URL, handles either JSON or newline-delimited IP:port data, validates addresses, deduplicates candidates, and optionally checks them against a destination you control. Install the only dependency with python -m pip install requests.

main()Run it with the exact feed URL documented by your chosen provider, then add --check-url only for a destination you control. The script intentionally uses a single request at a time. Increase concurrency only after confirming the destination permits it.
Equivalent fetches with cURL and Node.js
Set SOURCE_URL to the documented feed URL in your shell; keeping it in an environment variable avoids hard-coding an unverified endpoint.

console.log(body);Neither snippet treats downloaded entries as trusted. Parse, validate and deduplicate before passing a candidate to a client library. SOCKS support also depends on your HTTP client; a client that accepts only HTTP proxy URLs cannot use SOCKS4 or SOCKS5 without an adapter.

Use a controlled destination
Expose a small endpoint that returns a timestamp and request identifier, or use an internal health URL. A successful response proves only that this route worked at that moment; it does not prove anonymity, safety or suitability for another site.
Use conservative timeouts and retries
- Set a connect timeout around three seconds and a read timeout around eight seconds as a starting point.
- Allow at most one or two retries with exponential backoff. Retrying a dead public proxy aggressively creates noise and wastes time.
- Keep concurrency low, then raise it only when your destination’s rate limits allow it.
- Record HTTP status, elapsed milliseconds, TLS verification result, exception type and timestamp.
Classify results
Separate DNS or connection failures, timeouts, TLS failures, authentication responses and successful responses. Remove repeated failures quickly. Recheck a healthy candidate immediately before a job because public lists change between collection and use.

Security, privacy and legal boundaries
ProxyScrape’s README warns that public proxies may log traffic, inject content or hijack sessions. Keep certificate verification enabled and prefer HTTPS to the destination. Never transmit passwords, session cookies, payment information, private API keys or bearer tokens through an endpoint you do not operate.
A 30-month study by Naif Mehanna, Walter Rudametkin, Pierre Laperdrix and Antoine Vastel (MADWeb 2024) collected 640,693 proxies from 11 providers and found only 34.5% active at least once. It identified 4,452 distinct CVEs on proxy IP addresses, including issues associated with unauthorized command execution and privilege escalation. The researchers also found 16,923 distinct proxies that modified content; on average, 5.7% of active proxies returned altered content in a run. These figures describe the study’s sample and period, not every list today, but they explain why a free endpoint must be treated as hostile infrastructure.

Common failures and fixes
The feed returns an empty list
Check whether the response is JSON, CSV, HTML or compressed data; inspect the content type and save the raw response. Update field mappings for renamed columns, and verify that your request was not redirected to a consent or bot-check page.
Every candidate times out
Confirm that the protocol is correct, test one endpoint manually, and distinguish a blocked destination from a dead proxy by trying your controlled health URL. Do not solve timeouts by sending a high-volume retry storm.
TLS verification fails
Use HTTPS to the destination and keep verification enabled. A certificate error is a reason to reject the route, not to disable verification.

The target sees the wrong IP or altered content
That can indicate a transparent proxy, an injecting intermediary or a failed proxy configuration. Capture response headers and a body hash, discard the endpoint, and never submit secrets.
Results change between runs
That is normal for public infrastructure. Store last-checked timestamps, apply a short cache TTL, and revalidate immediately before use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a public proxy guarantee anonymity?
No. A proxy can expose your traffic, identify you through headers or cookies, or modify responses. Treat public endpoints as untrusted and do not send secrets.
How often should I recheck a proxy?
Recheck immediately before an authorized job and discard repeated failures. Public endpoints can disappear or change behavior between feed updates.
Should I use a free proxy for production scraping?
Usually not. For production, prefer an official API or infrastructure you control, with documented ownership, monitoring, stable egress and terms that permit your workload.
