To verify an archived capture, establish exactly which record you mean, preserve the archive’s index metadata, and compare the retrieved payload with the digest recorded for that record. Report the timestamp as the archive’s recorded capture time—not as independently proven creation time. A digest can show that bytes match an archive record, but it cannot by itself prove when those bytes were created.
What you can prove—and what you cannot
Archived-capture verification has two separate questions:
- Integrity: Do the bytes you retrieved match the archive’s recorded fingerprint?
- Time: What date and time does the archive record for that capture, and is there any independent attestation of that time?
If the payload matches the index digest, you can say that the retrieved bytes are consistent with the archive’s recorded object. You cannot turn that result into proof that the live website returned those exact bytes at that time. Archives may rewrite URIs, migrate formats, omit resources, or replay a processed representation.
1. Pin down the exact capture
Start with the archived URL, not just a calendar view. Save both the complete replay URL and the original URL shown by the archive. Record the archive institution and collection, if displayed, plus the redirect target when one exists.

Calendar interfaces can collapse captures taken within minutes. An index query may reveal multiple records that appear as one calendar entry. Treat the index record as authoritative for identifying the object.
Capture-identity checklist
- Exact original URL, including path, query string, and fragment when the archive preserves it.
- Archive name and collection.
- 14-digit timestamp from the index.
- HTTP status and MIME type.
- Redirect target, if applicable.
- Digest, length, filename, and offset when supplied.
2. Preserve the index record
Export the archive’s CDX (or equivalent) response as an unmodified text file. Keep the raw line as evidence and create a separate, readable transcription. Typical fields are:
| Field | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Original URL | The URL used to identify the captured resource. |
| Timestamp | The archive-indexed capture time. The Library of Congress describes CDX timestamps as GMT. |
| Status | The HTTP status recorded for the capture. |
| MIME type | The content type associated with the record. |
| Digest | A fingerprint of the payload; Archive-It documents this as a Base32-encoded SHA-1 checksum. |
| Length | Recorded size of the stored object. |
| Filename and offset | Location information that can identify a WARC record when access is available. |
Keep the 14-digit value exactly as supplied. Convert it to a human-readable date only after confirming the archive’s timezone convention, and retain both forms in your evidence log.
3. Verify the payload digest
Retrieve the archived object in the least-transformed form the service permits. A replay page may include a wrapper, rewritten links, injected scripts, decompression, or format conversion. Hashing that wrapper does not test the stored payload represented by the index digest.

openssl sha1 -binary capture.bin | base64
That command prints Base64, while Archive-It’s CDX digest is Base32. Use a Base32 encoder or a short script for a direct comparison:
import base64, hashlib, pathlib, sys
path = pathlib.Path(sys.argv[1])
digest = base64.b32encode(hashlib.sha1(path.read_bytes()).digest()).decode().rstrip("=")
print(digest)
# Example: python digest.py capture.bin
Compare the normalized value with the index value. Do not silently change the algorithm, remove characters, or hash a different file. Record the exact bytes hashed, their length, the algorithm, the encoded digest, and the retrieval date.
Interpret the result
- Match: The retrieved bytes match the archive’s listed fingerprint, subject to the archive’s encoding and normalization rules.
- Mismatch: You may have downloaded a replay wrapper, a transformed representation, a different capture, or an incomplete response. Recheck the URL, timestamp, content encoding, and retrieval method.
- No digest: You can still document identity and time metadata, but you cannot perform this particular fixity check.
4. Inspect WARC metadata when available
WARC files package captured resources with metadata such as record date, record type, target URI, and length. If the index supplies a filename and byte offset, use them to locate the corresponding record and check that its target URL, date, type, and length agree with the index.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
WARC downloads are not universally public. Archive-It describes downloads and related metadata for credentialed partners, so lack of access is an access limitation—not evidence that a record does not exist.
What a second WARC view adds
- It connects the indexed entry to a concrete stored record.
- It lets you inspect record-level date, type, and length fields.
- It can reveal whether you are hashing the payload or a replay product.
Agreement between CDX and WARC strengthens consistency. It still does not supply an independent, externally attested creation timestamp.

5. Check Memento protocol metadata
For a Memento-compatible archive, inspect the response headers. Memento-Datetime expresses the archival datetime, and the original relation identifies the associated live resource. RFC 7089 is informational rather than an Internet Standards Track specification.
Memento also warns that replay bytes can differ from the original live response because an archive may rewrite URIs or migrate formats. Therefore, use the header to identify the archived state, not to claim byte identity with the historical live response.

6. Write the time statement precisely
Use wording that separates observation from inference:
- “The archive index records a capture at 2024-05-18 14:22:31 GMT.”
- “The retrieved payload matches the SHA-1 digest listed for that index entry.”
- “The archive’s record and payload are internally consistent; no separate trusted timestamp was established.”
Avoid “created on” unless you have independent evidence of creation. A capture timestamp is when the archive says it captured or indexed the object. It is not automatically a cryptographically attested time.
Comparing multiple captures
When several records exist, compare them systematically rather than choosing the nearest calendar dot.

| Axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Identity | Is the original URL identical? Did the status, MIME type, or redirect target change? |
| Time | What is the raw timestamp and timezone basis? Is a Memento-Datetime header available? |
| Integrity | Which algorithm and digest are recorded, and which bytes did you hash? |
| Accessibility | Can you obtain the WARC record and associated metadata? |
| Completeness | Were required images, scripts, media, or embedded resources captured? |
Completeness and replay limitations
An intact HTML payload does not mean the whole website was preserved. The Library of Congress identifies limitations involving streaming media, databases, deep-web content, and rich multimedia. A replay may also show the closest available capture when the requested date has no exact record.
Document missing resources, broken embeds, redirected assets, and any notice that the archive substituted a nearby capture. Do not describe a visually incomplete replay as a complete reconstruction of the live site.
Archive fixity is useful context, not individual proof
Archive-It reports periodic integrity checks on its web-archive data. That is a preservation policy statement, not a publicly auditable result for every individual capture. Apply the same distinction to any archive: institutional procedures increase confidence, but they do not replace the evidence you can inspect for the specific record.
Evidence log template
For reproducibility, keep one record containing:
- Archive, collection, original URL, replay URL, and access date.
- Raw CDX line or equivalent index response.
- Human-readable timestamp plus the documented timezone basis.
- Status, MIME type, digest, length, filename, and offset.
- Downloaded filename, byte count, retrieval method, and hash command or script.
- WARC target URI and record date, if inspected.
Memento-Datetimeandoriginalheaders, if present.- Observed omissions, substitutions, or replay transformations.
- A conclusion limited to what these checks establish.
Troubleshooting common failures
The calendar shows one capture but the index shows several
Use the full index record and its timestamp. Calendar grouping is a presentation shortcut and can hide captures taken minutes apart.
The digest does not match
Confirm that you saved the payload rather than an HTML replay shell, selected the exact timestamp, preserved content encoding, and used SHA-1 with the archive’s Base32 convention. Check the recorded length as well.

The requested date is unavailable
Report the nearest available capture and identify it as such. Do not present the substituted date as an exact capture of the requested moment.
The page renders differently each time
Dynamic scripts, missing dependencies, URI rewriting, and archive processing can change replay behavior. Verify the stored record and metadata instead of relying on visual appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a matching hash prove who created the capture?
No. It proves that the bytes you hashed match the archive’s recorded digest. The archive’s timestamp remains an archive-held record unless separate, independently verifiable time evidence exists.
Can a screenshot prove the original page existed?
A screenshot documents what was rendered or captured, but it does not replace the archive index, payload digest, or WARC metadata needed to verify provenance.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I hash the replay HTML page?
Only if the archive explicitly identifies that response as the captured payload. Otherwise, obtain the least-transformed payload available; replay wrappers and rewriting can produce different bytes.
