Use a website mirroring tool such as HTTrack to copy the pages and files it can reach into a local folder, then compress that folder into a ZIP archive. HTTrack’s normal output is a browsable directory tree—not a ZIP—and a completed crawl does not guarantee that every page or feature has been captured.
What a website ZIP contains—and what it does not
A website mirror is a local copy assembled by following links from a starting URL and downloading the files the crawler is allowed to fetch. HTTrack can reconstruct links so you can browse the saved pages from your computer. The ZIP is simply a convenient package of that mirror folder; it is not a special website format.
The result is limited by what the crawler can discover and access. Pages hidden behind login flows, dynamically generated content, server restrictions, robots rules, or links the crawler does not follow may be missing. A site that appears to finish downloading can still be incomplete, so plan to inspect its logs and test important pages offline.
This method is appropriate when you are authorized to save the site and need an offline browsing copy or a transferable folder. It is not the same as preserving a site’s full backend, database, user accounts, or interactive services.

Choose the scope before you start
Begin with the canonical home page or the specific section you are authorized to archive. HTTrack’s ordinary one-site mode stays on the same host by default. Starting at a subdirectory generally keeps the crawl within that path, and links to other hosts are not followed by default.
Check the address before crawling. A site may redirect from HTTP to HTTPS, from the apex domain to www, or the other way around. Start with the final destination URL or deliberately allow the destination host. If important images, stylesheets, scripts, or documents live on a CDN or another host, allow only the relevant host or path. Broadly following external links can turn a focused capture into a much larger crawl.
Before you begin, decide whether your goal is:
- Offline browsing: Keep the normal mirror folder structure and test local links.
- Transfer or sharing: ZIP the completed mirror folder, keeping its top-level folder intact.
- Preservation: Consider whether a crawl archive format such as WARC or WACZ better fits your preservation needs. The cited HTTrack material identifies these as alternatives to consider, but does not establish that one format is universally best.

Command-line workflow
- Install and open HTTrack. Choose the command-line interface if you want to enter the crawl command directly. HTTrack also offers graphical interfaces that guide you through a similar workflow.
- Choose the starting URL and output directory. The official command-line guide gives this one-site example:
httrack https://example.com/ --path mydir. Replace the example address with the canonical site or section you are permitted to save. The command writes the mirror to the requested output path. - Keep the initial scope narrow. Start with the default same-host behavior. If assets required for the local pages come from another host, add only that host or relevant path after confirming it is part of the site you intend to capture.
- Let the crawl finish, then inspect its logs. HTTrack records URLs that were refused, redirected, or filtered. Review
hts-log.txtandhts-err.txtto find problems rather than treating a completion message as proof that everything was saved.
The command above is the documented one-site recipe; it does not promise that every site can be mirrored with one command. Authentication, redirect behavior, filters, robots rules, server responses, and dynamic pages can all affect what is fetched.
Graphical workflow
If you prefer a graphical interface, use its guided workflow to enter the project name, starting URL, and local destination, then start the mirror. The graphical interface uses the same HTTrack engine, so the same scope, access, and completeness limits apply. Review the generated logs and test the local copy before packaging it.

Handle assets, access rules, and authentication carefully
A page may load while some of its assets are hosted elsewhere. If the local copy is missing styling, images, scripts, or documents, check whether those files were served from a separate host and whether your crawl scope excluded it. Add only the necessary host or path. HTTrack’s --near option can over-fetch an external host, so it is not a substitute for a deliberate scope decision.
Do not disable robots protections to work around a server response. HTTrack’s documentation says missing captures may be related to robots.txt, and its command-line guidance warns against disabling robots protections as a workaround. Respect the site’s access controls and the permissions you have to save its content.
HTTrack documents a cookie-file method for authorized authenticated sections. That method does not guarantee compatibility with every login system or dynamic site. If a page requires an interactive login, changes content after scripts run, or relies on services unavailable to the crawler, expect that part of the mirror may not work as it does online.
Check the mirror before making a ZIP
- Read the crawl logs. Search
hts-log.txtandhts-err.txtfor refused, redirected, or filtered URLs. Follow up on any missing page or asset that matters to your use case. - Open the local entry page. Browse the saved copy from its output folder and follow representative links. Check pages from different parts of the site, not only the home page.
- Verify important files. Confirm that key images, downloadable documents, and other required assets are present and usable offline.
- Decide whether gaps are acceptable. A crawler follows discoverable links; it cannot establish that every hidden, restricted, or dynamic page was captured. If critical material is missing, adjust scope or access only when permitted, rerun, and inspect the new logs.
These checks matter because a successful crawl is not the same as an exhaustive copy. Keep a note of any known omissions if you are handing the archive to someone else.

Compress the mirror folder into a ZIP
Once you have reviewed the mirror, use your operating system’s file manager to select the completed output folder and choose its compress or create-archive action. Select ZIP if the system asks for an archive format. Preserve the top-level folder so the recipient can unpack one clearly named folder rather than a loose collection of files.
HTTrack’s FAQ mentions directing downloads to tar or ZIP through a shell system command option, but does not provide a current, portable ZIP command recipe. The file-manager method avoids assuming a particular operating system or shell. If you use a custom shell command, verify its behavior on your system and test the resulting archive by extracting it to a separate location and opening the local entry page.
Resume or update a mirror without losing useful files
Keep HTTrack’s cache if you may need to resume an interrupted download or update an existing mirror. Its command-line guide warns that an update can remove old local files that are not found during the new run. If you need to retain those older files, the guide documents --purge-old=0. Decide whether you want an exact refreshed mirror or a collection that also keeps files no longer found online before updating.
Common problems and fixes
The mirror is missing pages
Check whether the pages are linked from the starting URL, filtered out, refused by the server, or outside the default host or path scope. Inspect the logs, then adjust the starting point or narrowly expand the allowed scope if you are authorized to do so. A page that requires a login or dynamic interaction may not be captured by the documented cookie-file method.

Images or styling are missing offline
Look for asset URLs on a CDN or a separate host in the logs. If that host is part of the permitted capture, allow the relevant host or path and repeat the crawl. Avoid broad off-host following, which can expand the capture unexpectedly.
The site redirects and the local links do not work
Start from the final URL after the redirect, or explicitly allow the destination host when appropriate. The default same-host behavior may not include a redirected host automatically.
The crawl stops or reports refused URLs
Read the log entries to identify the affected URLs and their outcomes. Refusals can reflect the server response or site access rules; do not disable robots protections to force the download. Narrow the scope or seek an authorized access method instead of treating every refused URL as a configuration error.
An update removes older local files
HTTrack warns that an update may remove files not found in the new run. Keep the cache, and use the documented --purge-old=0 option when retaining those older files is important.

Folder mirror, single-file output, or archive?
HTTrack also documents single-file HTML and MHT output options for particular sharing needs. Those formats are not the same as zipping a complete mirror folder. Choose based on the intended use: a folder tree is suited to browsing a linked site locally, while a single-file output serves a narrower packaging need. For a ZIP, the ordinary workflow is to mirror to a directory and compress that directory afterward.
