Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe most reliable web-extraction API starts with a response contract: define the exact fields, types, required values, null rules, evidence, and pagination your consumer expects before choosing an extractor. Use CSS selectors for a stable, known DOM; use prompt- or schema-guided extraction when the task requires semantic interpretation. Then wait for JavaScript content, validate every result, and preserve enough provenance to audit it.
Start with the response contract
A response contract is the interface between an extraction service and the code that consumes its result. Write it before tuning prompts or selectors.
Name fields and types explicitly
Choose stable, descriptive names such as product_name, price, currency, and in_stock. Specify whether each value is a string, number, Boolean, date-time, array, or object. Define units and formats: for example, whether price is a decimal number in the page’s currency or an integer number of minor units.
Define required, optional, and null values
Mark fields that must be present for a record to be usable. Decide whether an absent value is represented by null, an empty array, an omitted property, or a validation error. Do not let the extractor choose inconsistently between those forms.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Constrain the shape
For schema-capable APIs, require the properties you need and reject accidental keys. OpenAI’s structured-output examples use required properties and additionalProperties: false; Cloudflare describes its JSON Schema as the expected output structure. See OpenAI’s structured outputs guide and Cloudflare’s /json endpoint documentation.
Model lists and nested objects deliberately
Represent repeated items as arrays with an item schema. Put related values in nested objects when they belong together, such as an author object containing name and profile_url. State whether ordering matters and how duplicates should be handled.
Choose selectors or semantic extraction
These approaches solve different problems and fail differently.
CSS selectors for predictable pages
Use selector-based extraction when the fields occupy known elements in a page structure: a product card’s title, a table’s cells, or an article’s metadata. A rule such as .product-card .price is deterministic and easy to test. Its weakness is coupling to the site’s DOM. Context.dev distinguishes a CSS-rule Scrape endpoint from its research-oriented Answers endpoint and warns that selectors may need updates when a site changes; see Context.dev’s extraction documentation.

Prompts and schemas for variable content
Use a prompt when the information may appear under different labels or in different locations, such as identifying a person’s role across several sources. A schema constrains the returned shape; a prompt describes what to look for. Cloudflare accepts a prompt, a JSON Schema response_format, or both, and returns extracted data as JSON. A schema is not a guarantee that the model found a true value.
Do not confuse an example object with JSON Schema
Context.dev’s json_format is documented as an example JSON object. It illustrates the desired shape but is not the same as a formal JSON Schema with type, required-property, and additional-property constraints. Validate the resulting json_content in your own application.
Make the page render before extraction
Typed JSON can still be empty or wrong if the service reads the page before its scripts insert the content. Cloudflare notes that JavaScript-heavy pages may be captured before rendering completes.
Wait for a rendering condition
- Wait for
networkidle0when the page should become completely quiet. - Use
networkidle2when analytics or long-lived connections prevent a fully idle page. - Prefer waiting for a known content selector, such as
.results-list, when that element marks readiness. - Use a bounded delay only when there is no reliable selector or network condition.
Record which wait strategy was used, and set a timeout so a permanently stalled page becomes an explicit error rather than an apparently valid empty result. A configurable user agent does not bypass bot protection, according to Cloudflare’s guidance.

Diagnose null and empty results
- Open the URL in a real browser and confirm the data is visible after scripts run.
- Check whether the extractor waited for the relevant selector or network state.
- Verify that the selector, prompt, and field names match the rendered content rather than the initial HTML.
- Classify bot checks, consent walls, login requirements, timeouts, and genuinely missing fields separately.
- Retry transient failures with a limit; do not turn repeated empty responses into records with invented defaults.
Capture evidence and provenance
For auditable data, return more than the normalized value. Store the source URL, retrieval time, and the page fragment or citation that supports the field. Cloudflare’s endpoint can extract from a URL or supplied HTML and return structured JSON. Context.dev’s research-oriented Answers documentation describes source URLs. Treat those URLs and excerpts as application-level fields when a reviewer must verify a result.
Keep provenance per item when a response combines multiple pages. A single source URL attached to an entire array is insufficient if individual entries came from different documents.
Validate structure and meaning after extraction
Validation is a second stage, not an optional consequence of using a schema.
Structural checks
- Parse JSON and reject malformed responses.
- Check required properties, primitive types, enum values, date formats, and numeric ranges.
- Reject unknown keys when your contract is strict.
- Verify array cardinality and nested-object shape.
Semantic and source checks
- Confirm that a value is supported by the cited page text or element.
- Distinguish “not found” from an extractor error and from a page that was not rendered.
- Check cross-field rules, such as an end date not preceding a start date or a currency being present when a price is present.
- Flag low-confidence or ambiguous values for review instead of silently coercing them.
Structured output enforces form, not factual truth. Context.dev explicitly instructs applications to validate returned content, and Cloudflare’s rendering warnings show why a perfectly valid JSON object can still contain no usable page data.

Consume the surrounding API correctly
Map result and error paths
APIs often wrap extracted data inside a result property and report failures in a different object. Configure your client with the documented success path and error path, and log the raw response for failed requests without exposing secrets. AWS Glue’s connection reference illustrates explicit response-path and error-path configuration: AWS Glue Connection Type API.
Implement the provider’s pagination model
Determine whether the service uses a cursor, offset, page number, or continuation token; identify the default and maximum page sizes; and stop only when the provider signals completion. ScrAPIr notes that a client without pagination details may retrieve only the first default page. AWS Glue documents cursor- and offset-based configuration patterns. Compare the number of records requested with the number received as a completeness check.
Persist continuation state safely
Store the cursor or offset with the job checkpoint, make retries idempotent, and protect against a provider returning the same cursor repeatedly. Keep page-level errors attached to the affected request so a partial export cannot be mistaken for a complete one.

Structured-output support is specific to an API and model combination. Amazon Bedrock documents structured outputs across several APIs, but its Anthropic Messages API on bedrock-mantle does not support the format parameter. Bedrock also documents a citation incompatibility for Anthropic structured outputs. Check the current endpoint’s support matrix before relying on strict output or citations; the applicable reference is Bedrock validated JSON results.

Compare extraction methods by the risk that matters
| Concern | CSS selectors | Prompt/schema-guided extraction |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Known, stable DOM structure | Variable wording, locations, or multi-source interpretation |
| Determinism | High while the DOM remains stable | Semantic behavior can vary; schema constrains shape |
| Main failure | Selector breaks after a layout change | Missing, inferred, or unsupported value despite valid JSON |
| JavaScript rendering | Still required when target elements are script-generated | Still required before the model can interpret the page |
| Auditability | Element-level evidence is straightforward | Store source URLs and supporting excerpts explicitly |
| Maintenance | Update rules when markup changes | Update schema, prompt, model, or validation rules as behavior changes |
