The movie is about a struggling movie director Edward D. wood Jr as he tries to navigate his directing career. Due to his unusual behavior and confusing films, Wood fails to attract fame for his works.

However, with the help of an actor Bela Lugosi and some cast and crew, Wood was able to attain success. Subsequently, during his time, Wood directed engaging series of low-budget films with different genres.

On the other hand, a hitman roams the city looking for a job to get some cash. Meanwhile, fed up with the city’s justice system, a lone man takes the law into his own hand. The tale of these three people comes with drama as they involve themselves in other people’s lives.

Sunset Blvd. (1950)

“Sunset Blvd. (1950)” is no 8 in my pick of the best black and white movies.

In the 1950s Hollywood, unable to make sales, a screenplay writer Joe Gillis struggle with his work. With his debts going up, Joe plans to return to his hometown to start afresh.

Subsequently, while having a miserable day, Joe bumps into former silent-movie actress Norma Desmond. In a strange turn of event, Joe moves into Norma’s mansion to help her write a screenplay – to mark her comeback to spotlight.

12 Angry Men (1957)

Taking the 7th spot in my pick of the best black and white movies is “12 Angry Men (1957)”.

The story-line of the movie is about 12 men as they decide on an open-and-shut murder case. While the defense and prosecution have had their say, it is left for the jury to decide.

However, with different assumptions about the trial and the accused, the jury seems not to agree on a decision. As a result, while the juror struggles to make a decision, it led to drama in the jury room.

“12 Angry Men (1957)” is a superb production with crime and drama. It is available to watch on Amazon Prime.

Raging Bull (1980)

Coming 6th in my pick of the best black and white movies “Raging Bull (1980)”.

“Raging Bull (1980)” is about the career and life of a raging boxer Jaxer LaMotta. When boxing in the ring, Jaxer LaMotta faces his opponent with rage and violence.

However, while off the ring, Jaxer still behaves with rage towards his friends and family. Despite his bad temper, Jaxer LaMotta always wishes to receive love and affection from his family and friends.

“Raging Bull (1980)” is an outstanding movie – featuring drama, sport, and biography. If you want to have a thrilling experience, the movie is a perfect one. It is available now on Amazon Prime.

Persepolis (2007)

At no 5 in my pick of the best black and white movies is “Persepolis (2007)”.

During the 1970s Iran, a gifted young girl Marjane Satrapi witness the Islamic Revolution at the time. During this period, Marjane wishes to speak against injustice but her parents send her away to Vienna to study.

However, observing her new environment, Marjane struggles to adapt to the new culture. Eventually, when Marjane returns home, she observes the various changes in her hometown.

“Persepolis (2007)” is a brilliant animation movie. It features drama, history, war, and biography, If you want a black and white movie, you need to see this one. You can watch the movie now on Amazon Prime.

Wings of Desire (1987)

Coming 4th in my pick of the best black and white movies is “Wings of Desire (1987)”.

The movie is about two wandering angels Daniel and Cassiel as they spend their time in West Berlin. For most of their time, Damiel and Cassiel observe and tend to human activities – like trying to help the troubled minds.

Subsequently, wanting to have emotional attributes, Daniel wishes to become human. As a result, Daniel works toward making his wish come true.

The Artist (2011)

“The Artist (2011)” comes at no 3 in my pick of the best black and white movies.

The story-line of the movie is about a silent-era egoistic legend George Valentin and a young rising actress Peppy Miller. At a movie premiere, when Peppy meets Valentin, she kisses him on the cheek – this made headlines.

After a while, Peppy tries to make her way into the industry by auditioning for a dancing bit-part at the studio. Subsequently, Peppy’s fame begins to rise in the industry. However, with the introduction of talking pictures, Valentin‘s world begins to fade away.

“The Artist (2011)” is an exceptional production. It features comedy, drama, and romance. The movie is available on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Roma (2018)

Taking the 2nd spot in my pick of the best black and white movies is “Roma (2018)”.

“Roma (2018)” tells the story of a family as they struggle during a time of crisis. In the 1970s Mexico City, a domestic worker Cleo and the family she works for – consisting of four children with the parents – were faced with challenges.

However, despite their struggle, the family was able to survive and bond. When it all seems bad, in an unexpected way, the family finds comfort and happiness.

“Roma (2018)” is a remarkable movie – featuring thrilling drama. It is arguably one of the best black and white movies. The movie is available on Netflix.

Schindler’s List (1993)

Finally, at no 1 in my pick of the best black and white movies is “Schindler’s List (1993)”.

“Schindler’s List” is based on a true story about the life-changing story of a German businessman Oskar Schindler during World War II. While the Nazis persecuted the Jews, Schindler was moved to react to the situation.

Subsequently, to make things better, Schindler turns his enamelware and ammunitions factory into a refuge for the Jews. In the process, Schindler was able to save more than 1000 Jews from facing a gruesome end.
