The answer to “Best virtual tabletop software: How to play D&D online” is use-case dependent: Roll20 is the best general starting point, D&D Beyond Maps is the shortest route for existing D&D Beyond owners, Foundry suits customization and ownership, Fantasy Grounds favors rules automation, and Owlbear Rodeo is the focused map layer.

The comparison below separates hosted access, official content integration, automation, customization, map features, and total ownership costs. D&D Beyond Maps is beta, Foundry hosting is separate from its license, and digital content usually does not transfer automatically between platforms.

Key takeaways

  • Roll20 is the best all-around starting point for most groups because it is browser-based, has a free entry point, supports D&D, and includes voice and video.
  • D&D Beyond Maps is the shortest route from a purchased D&D Beyond adventure or digital library to an online map, but Wizards of the Coast labels Maps as beta.
  • Foundry Virtual Tabletop costs $50 for a perpetual software license, while hosting, connectivity, backups, and premium content remain separate responsibilities or costs.
  • Fantasy Grounds is the strongest fit for structured rules automation and official modules, while its rules-heavy workflow may take longer to learn.
  • Owlbear Rodeo is a lightweight map-and-token layer with a free Nestling plan offering 200 MB of storage and up to two rooms.

Which virtual tabletop software is best for D&D online?

The best choice depends on what the group values most. Choose Roll20 for the easiest general-purpose start, D&D Beyond Maps for official D&D Beyond integration, Foundry Virtual Tabletop for customization and ownership, Fantasy Grounds for rules automation, or Owlbear Rodeo for a focused tactical map.

No platform is a universal winner. A hosted browser service minimizes technical administration, while self-hosted software gives the GM more control but also makes the GM responsible for availability, updates, backups, and sometimes router configuration. Digital books and adventures are also commonly tied to the platform where they were purchased, so verify compatibility before buying the same content twice.

How do the best D&D virtual tabletops compare?

Platform Best for Cost and ownership model Core online-play tools Main trade-off
Roll20 Most first-time and mixed-experience groups Free base experience; optional creator subscription Maps, tokens, sheets, dice, notes, chat, voice, and video Advanced storage, Dynamic Lighting, and customization depend on the creator’s plan
D&D Beyond Maps Groups that already own D&D Beyond content D&D Beyond account access without a subscription; content purchases may still apply Shared browser space, maps, tokens, fog of war, encounters, initiative, turns, and Game Log Beta product with a narrower documented feature set than mature extensible VTTs
Foundry Virtual Tabletop Technically confident DMs and long campaigns $50 perpetual license; self-hosting or separate hosting costs Extensible systems and modules, automation, character advancement, roll requests, loot, and vision support The group manages hosting, connectivity, backups, and version compatibility
Fantasy Grounds Rules automation and official modules Free application and free built-in rulesets; additional titles and content are sold separately Structured rulesets, automated rolls, publisher content, and D&D Fifth Edition modules More rules-heavy workflow and platform-specific content
Owlbear Rodeo Groups that mainly need a fast tactical map Free Nestling plan; paid Fledgling and Bestling storage and room tiers Scenes, tokens, fog, drawing, text, measurement, permissions, and real-time syncing Separate tools may be needed for character sheets, campaign notes, automation, and voice

Why is Roll20 the best starting point for most groups?

Roll20 is the best all-around starting point when the group wants a hosted, browser-based D&D game without asking the GM to maintain a server. Roll20 provides maps, tokens, character sheets, dice, notes, chat, integrated voice, and video. Roll20’s official D&D virtual tabletop overview describes the platform’s browser-first online-play tools.

Roll20 keeps its base elements available for free. The game creator can optionally subscribe for features such as more storage, Dynamic Lighting, and additional customization. The paid features are attached to the creator’s game, so players can use those features without every player purchasing a separate subscription. Roll20’s subscription documentation dated December 13, 2024 explains this creator-level model.

Roll20 is also a practical choice for groups with different levels of experience because players can join through a browser rather than installing and administering a self-hosted application. The trade-off is breadth: the platform offers more campaign-management capability than a simple battlemap, but the number of tools and settings can feel excessive for a group that only wants to move tokens and roll dice.

Roll20’s tabletop engine supports both D&D 5E 2014 and D&D 5E 2024 character sheets. Roll20’s quality-of-life documentation dated November 12, 2025 describes improvements to performance, panning, zooming, drawing, token handling, effects, touch-device support, and related tabletop interactions.

When should you choose D&D Beyond Maps?

D&D Beyond Maps is the best fit for a D&D-only group that already buys adventures, maps, or monster tokens through D&D Beyond. Anyone with a D&D Beyond account can use Maps without a subscription, according to the official support documentation dated February 17, 2026.

Maps runs in a browser-based shared space and can use maps and monster tokens from a user’s D&D Beyond digital library. The DM can upload custom maps, place player tokens, use fog of war, invite players, and review dice rolls in the Game Log. The D&D Beyond Maps product page also documents combat encounters, initiative tracking, round and turn management, custom map uploads, and quickplay maps.

The important qualification is that D&D Beyond explicitly labels Maps as beta. Bugs and performance issues should be expected while Wizards of the Coast refines the feature set. Maps is therefore a compelling low-friction option for D&D Beyond customers, but it should not be treated as feature-equivalent to a mature VTT with extensive automation, third-party modules, or broad system support.

Buying a digital D&D Beyond book or adventure also does not mean the content automatically transfers to Roll20, Foundry, or Fantasy Grounds. Check the selected platform’s content licensing and integration details before purchasing duplicate digital books, adventures, maps, or tokens. D&D Beyond users who want official content inside Maps can consider D&D Beyond Maps adventures, D&D Beyond digital maps, or D&D Beyond monster tokens, subject to the product’s current availability and licensing.

Is Foundry Virtual Tabletop worth it for a long campaign?

Foundry Virtual Tabletop is worth considering for a long campaign when the GM values customization, automation, module support, and control over game data more than instant setup. Foundry is sold as a perpetual software license rather than a recurring VTT subscription. The official Foundry license page lists the software at $50 USD and says the license includes access to future updates.

Foundry can run on the GM’s computer, on a cloud server, or through an official hosting partner. Local self-hosting avoids a recurring VTT license fee, but the host computer must remain available when the group plays. Internet players may also require router configuration or port forwarding. Cloud and partner hosting reduce local-network friction but introduce hosting fees or additional technical configuration. Foundry’s hosting options guide explains the difference between self-hosting, cloud hosting, and managed hosting.

A Foundry license does not eliminate ownership costs. The group remains responsible for campaign backups, host availability, connection troubleshooting, and keeping systems and modules compatible with the chosen Foundry version. Foundry’s minimum requirements and hosting documentation are the right places to check before choosing a self-hosted setup.

The official D&D 5E system for Foundry is free. Its documented support includes automatic character advancement, roll requests, loot distribution, and D&D vision types. Foundry’s official D&D Fifth Edition system listing describes those character-sheet and rules-support features.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Foundry also has an official marketplace for premium content and lists managed hosting partners. Marketplace purchases integrate into the user’s Foundry account, but hosting-partner fees are separate from the one-time software license. DMs who do not want to configure self-hosting can investigate Foundry VTT hosting; DMs seeking ready-made content can compare Foundry VTT modules and Foundry adventure modules. Verify current partner terms and module compatibility before purchasing.

When is Fantasy Grounds the better choice?

Fantasy Grounds is the better choice when the DM wants a structured rules engine, extensive automation, official publisher partnerships, and ready-to-use modules rather than a mostly blank canvas. Fantasy Grounds is available as a free application for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and its official site advertises free built-in rulesets alongside additional titles available through its store. See the Fantasy Grounds official product page for its supported platform and ruleset model.

Fantasy Grounds emphasizes automated dice rolling, rulesets, structured campaign data, and official content. Its catalog includes Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition modules, which can reduce manual preparation for DMs who want a published adventure represented inside the VTT. The Fantasy Grounds license information describes dice rolling, rulesets, and official ruleset support across multiple roleplaying games.

The trade-off is learning curve and portability. A rules-heavy workflow can take more time to learn than Owlbear Rodeo’s map-first approach, and digital books, adventures, and modules are generally platform-specific. Verify that a Fantasy Grounds title works with the intended license and edition before buying content that was originally purchased for another service.

Is Owlbear Rodeo enough for online D&D?

Owlbear Rodeo is enough for online D&D when the group mainly needs a shared tactical map, tokens, fog, drawing, and measurement while handling voice chat and campaign administration elsewhere. Owlbear Rodeo uses rooms and scenes on an infinite canvas. Its documentation covers fog tools, drawing, rich text, measurement, real-time networking, viewport syncing, and player permissions. The Owlbear Rodeo documentation provides the current overview of those tools.

Owlbear Rodeo’s permissions are useful when the DM wants tight control over a scene. The GM can control whether players create, update, or delete scene items, and character interaction can be restricted to the players who own those characters. The official Owlbear Rodeo permissions documentation explains those controls.

Owlbear Rodeo’s pricing page lists the free Nestling plan with 200 MB of storage and up to two rooms. The paid Fledgling plan lists 5 GB of storage and up to ten rooms, while the Bestling plan lists 10 GB and up to 25 rooms. The page also lists features such as export and import, extensions, Dynamic Lighting, and larger asset limits across paid tiers. Check the Owlbear Rodeo pricing page before subscribing because storage limits and plan features can change.

Owlbear Rodeo is intentionally less of a full rules-and-campaign-management suite than Roll20, Foundry, or Fantasy Grounds. That means a group may need separate character sheets, notes, automation, and voice software. Groups moving from an older Owlbear version should also review the official Owlbear Rodeo 1.0-to-2.0 migration documentation before rebuilding rooms or scenes.

How much does online D&D software cost?

Online D&D software can cost nothing at the software-entry level, but content, hosting, storage, and advanced features create different total costs. The most important distinction is whether the platform charges for the VTT itself, for the creator’s features, for digital content, or for hosting.

Platform Entry cost described by the provider What may cost extra Who carries the main responsibility
Roll20 Free base elements Creator subscription features such as additional storage, Dynamic Lighting, and customization Roll20 handles hosting; the game creator chooses whether to subscribe
D&D Beyond Maps No subscription required for an account D&D Beyond digital adventures, maps, and tokens may require content purchases Wizards operates the service; users must tolerate beta limitations and verify content availability
Foundry Virtual Tabletop $50 perpetual software license listed on the official purchase page Cloud or managed hosting, premium marketplace content, and the group’s own backup and connectivity needs The GM or group manages self-hosting, or pays a separate hosting provider
Fantasy Grounds Free application and free built-in rulesets Additional rulesets, adventures, modules, and other store content The group manages its installation and content licenses
Owlbear Rodeo Free Nestling plan with 200 MB and two rooms Paid plans for more storage, rooms, asset limits, extensions, and related features Owlbear hosts the rooms; the group may still need separate communication and campaign tools

Prices, storage limits, subscription tiers, platform availability, and beta features can change. Treat the figures above as the values documented by the cited provider pages supplied for this comparison, and verify the provider’s pricing and licensing terms before paying for a subscription, hosting plan, module, or digital book.

How do you play D&D online step by step?

  1. Choose the rules and content source. Decide whether the group will use D&D Beyond, a VTT marketplace, physical books, PDFs, or manually entered homebrew. Confirm the edition and decide whether the campaign uses D&D 5E 2014 or D&D 5E 2024 sheets where the platform offers both.
  2. Choose the VTT based on setup tolerance. Pick Roll20 or D&D Beyond Maps for a hosted browser-first approach, Foundry for ownership and customization, Fantasy Grounds for structured automation, or Owlbear Rodeo for a focused map layer.
  3. Create the GM account and campaign. The GM normally creates the game, selects the ruleset or character-sheet format, imports or uploads maps, and invites players. A self-hosted Foundry campaign also requires the GM to choose a reachable hosting method.
  4. Set up voice and video. Roll20 includes integrated voice and video. Owlbear Rodeo should generally be treated as a map layer paired with Discord or another communication service unless the group selects an extension or external tool.
  5. Prepare character sheets and tokens. Decide who owns each character, whether players can move their own tokens, whether the DM controls NPCs, and how hidden information is handled. Permission settings are particularly important in map-first tools.
  6. Prepare encounters and maps. Upload or import the maps, place player and monster tokens, establish fog of war or Dynamic Lighting where supported, and create encounters or initiative tracking if the selected platform provides those features.
  7. Run a technical session before the first adventure. Test browser compatibility, microphones, webcams, dice rolls, map loading, token ownership, fog or Dynamic Lighting, player invitations, and the GM’s upload or hosting workflow.
  8. Back up the campaign. Backups are especially important for self-hosted Foundry because the group, rather than a fully managed platform, has primary responsibility for world data and restoring it after a problem.

What equipment do you need for online D&D?

You do not need a physical game table or physical dice to play D&D online. A computer or supported device, a stable internet connection, a browser or installed VTT client, and a way to communicate are the practical essentials. Most VTTs provide digital dice, and the group can use a physical D&D dice set if it also plays in person or prefers rolling alongside the online interface.

New players may find a physical D&D Player’s Handbook useful as a rules reference, but a physical rulebook is separate from platform-specific digital content. Owning a physical book does not by itself import its rules, adventures, maps, or tokens into a VTT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A USB microphone for online D&D is an optional quality upgrade when the computer’s built-in microphone produces echo or unclear speech. Test the existing microphone before buying equipment; no specific microphone model is required by the VTTs compared here.

What should you test before the first online session?

Browser or application problems

Update the browser or VTT application, close unnecessary background applications, and confirm that the device meets the platform’s requirements. If a map loads slowly, test a smaller image or fewer simultaneous assets before assuming that a paid plan will solve the problem.

Voice and video problems

Check the browser’s microphone and camera permissions, select the intended input device, and test voice communication before the session begins. Roll20’s integrated communication is convenient, while an Owlbear Rodeo group should test its separate communication service and ensure that players can hear both the DM and one another.

Players cannot connect to Foundry

Confirm that the host computer is running and reachable, then review local-network settings, router configuration, and port forwarding if internet players connect directly to a self-hosted instance. Moving to cloud or managed hosting can reduce local-network friction, but hosting fees or configuration requirements remain separate from the Foundry license.

D&D Beyond Maps behaves unpredictably

Remember that Maps is a beta product. Check the official support documentation for known changes, reduce unnecessary assets, and keep a fallback plan such as a shared map image and external dice roller for an important session.

Which VTT should your group choose?

If your group says… Choose first Why
We want to start tonight with minimal administration. Roll20 Roll20 is hosted, browser-based, has a free entry point, supports D&D, and includes communication tools.
We already own adventures and tokens on D&D Beyond. D&D Beyond Maps Maps is integrated with the D&D Beyond library and does not require a subscription for basic account access.
We want to customize a long-running campaign and control our data. Foundry Virtual Tabletop Foundry uses a perpetual license, supports self-hosting, and has a free official D&D 5E system plus modules.
We want the software to automate rules and published adventures. Fantasy Grounds Fantasy Grounds is built around structured rulesets, automated rolling, publisher partnerships, and official modules.
We only need a shared battle map alongside voice chat. Owlbear Rodeo Owlbear focuses on rooms, scenes, tokens, fog, drawing, measurement, and permissions without requiring a complete campaign suite.

For a group that cannot decide, start with Roll20 unless an existing content library or a strong ownership preference points elsewhere. Choose D&D Beyond Maps when official D&D Beyond integration matters more than beta maturity, Foundry when the GM accepts hosting responsibility, Fantasy Grounds when automation is the priority, and Owlbear Rodeo when a separate character-sheet and voice setup is already in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all players need a Roll20 subscription?

No. Roll20 lets the game creator subscribe for advanced features such as additional storage, Dynamic Lighting, and customization, and players can use those game features without each player buying a separate subscription. Roll20’s base elements remain available for free, although the exact feature limits depend on the current plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Foundry Virtual Tabletop license include hosting?

No. Foundry’s $50 license is for the VTT software, not a complete hosting service. A GM can self-host from a computer, use a cloud server, or pay a managed hosting partner; the group also remains responsible for connectivity, backups, and premium content.

Can a D&D Beyond purchase be used automatically in Roll20, Foundry, or Fantasy Grounds?

No automatic transfer should be assumed. D&D Beyond purchases, Roll20 content, Foundry modules, and Fantasy Grounds titles are commonly tied to their respective platforms, so verify compatibility and licensing before buying duplicate digital books or adventures.

Can Owlbear Rodeo replace a full D&D virtual tabletop?

Yes, if the group mainly needs maps, tokens, fog, drawing, and measurement. Owlbear Rodeo is intentionally a lightweight map layer, so the group may need separate tools for character sheets, campaign notes, rules automation, and voice communication.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Roll20 is the safest general recommendation for most groups starting D&D online, but the best virtual tabletop software depends on the group’s priorities. D&D Beyond Maps wins for existing D&D Beyond libraries, Foundry for ownership and customization, Fantasy Grounds for rules automation, and Owlbear Rodeo for a lightweight tactical map.
