For most iPhone users, Apple’s built-in Hidden album is the best photo vault: it requires no download, separate account, or third-party vendor, and it is protected by Face ID, Touch ID, or the iPhone passcode. Choose Keepsafe if polished albums, backup, and multi-device access matter most; Private Photo Vault if you specifically want a decoy password and break-in reports; and Secure Folder or Folder Lock if you need to protect documents, notes, passwords, and other files as well as photos.

The important distinction is what you mean by private. Apple’s Hidden album conceals media inside Photos, while third-party vaults can add a separate app lock, decoy access, album controls, or cloud storage. None of the app listings reviewed here amounts to an independent security audit, and a cloud backup changes who or what must be trusted.

Quick picks

Best for Pick Why Main trade-off
Simple concealment with no extra app Apple Hidden album Built into Photos and protected by the iPhone’s existing authentication It is not an independent vault with its own password or decoy mode
Polished albums, backup, and multi-device convenience Keepsafe PIN or biometric access, custom albums, synchronization, backup, and Premium album locks Cloud-oriented features, recurring subscription options, and developer-disclosed tracking or advertising data
Decoy access and intrusion evidence Private Photo Vault Decoy password, break-in reports, password-protected albums, and optional Cloud Vault More complex privacy and cloud considerations; listing claims are not an independent audit
Photos plus notes, contacts, passwords, and documents Secure Folder Private-file organization with Face ID, Touch ID, PINs, separate folder locks, and optional private iCloud sync Broader than a photo-only app, and its on-device or private-iCloud claims come from the listing
Explicitly offline or no-account positioning Secret Photo Vault: App Lock The listing describes an offline vault with no account, cloud, sync, or tracking Local-only storage can make device loss, app deletion, or failed recovery more consequential
Disguise behavior and easy export Hide it Pro Multiple albums, automatic locking, one-tap export, and a screen that can appear to have crashed It advertises cloud backup without providing a detailed key-management explanation in the indexed description
A broad private-data container Folder Lock Photos, videos, documents, contacts, wallet cards, notes, audio, password management, private browsing, and cloud-transfer options Feature-heavy for someone who only wants to hide a few photos

Ratings, rating counts, prices, privacy labels, minimum iOS versions, and features change. App Store descriptions and privacy labels are developer disclosures; Apple says the privacy information has not been verified by Apple.

1. Apple Hidden album: best overall for most people

Apple’s Hidden album is the right answer when the goal is simply to keep selected photos and videos out of the normal Photos experience. Hidden items are removed from the Library, other albums, Memories, search results, and the Photos widget. The collection is protected by Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode, depending on the iPhone’s hardware and settings.

Ailun Privacy Screen Protector iPhone 17e/16e/14/13/13 Pro, 2 Pack
  • [2 Pack] This product includes 2 pack privacy screen protectors.WORKS FOR iPhone 17e/16e/14/iPhone 13/13 Pro 6.1 Inch tempered glass screen protector.Featuring maximum protection from scratches, scrapes, and bumps.[Not for iPhone 16 6.1 inch, iPhone 13 mini 5.4 inch, iPhone 13 Pro Max/iPhone 14 Pro Max/iPhone 14 Plus 6.7 inch, iPhone 14 Pro 6.1 inch]
  • Specialty: to enhance compatibility with most cases, the Tempered glass does not cover the entire screen. HD ultra-clear rounded glass for iPhone 17e/16e/14/iPhone 13/13 Pro is 99.99% touch-screen accurate.
  • 99.99% High-definition clear hydrophobic and oleophobic screen coating protects against sweat and oil residue from fingerprints.
  • High Privacy: Keeps your personal, private, and sensitive information hidden from strangers, screen is only visible to persons directly in front of screen.Good choose when you are in the bus, elevator, metro or other public occasions.(Note: Due to this privacy cover will darken the image to prevent the peeking eyes near you, you might need to turn your device display brightness up a bit when use it.)
  • Online video installation instruction: Easiest Installation - removing dust and aligning it properly before actual installation, enjoy your screen as if it wasn't there.

It also avoids the biggest third-party trade-offs: there is no additional vault app to maintain, no separate vendor account to recover, and no need to transfer your media into a company’s storage system. If you already use iCloud Photos, the hidden state synchronizes to your other devices using the same Apple Account. That is convenient, but it also means hiding a photo on one device does not keep it visible on another device in that same iCloud Photos library.

How to hide photos on an iPhone

  1. Open Photos and select one or more photos or videos.
  2. Tap the More button, usually shown as an ellipsis, and choose Hide.
  3. Confirm the action. The items move out of the normal Photos views and into the Hidden collection.

Apple changes the Photos layout between iOS releases. On recent versions, open Photos > Collections > Utilities > Hidden, tap View Album, and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode. From there, select an item and use the More menu to unhide or delete it.

How to hide the Hidden album itself

To remove the collection from the Photos interface, open Settings > Apps > Photos and turn off Show Hidden Album. On older iOS versions where Photos has its own top-level Settings entry, the path is Settings > Photos. This hides the album from view; it does not create a second password or make the media disappear from iCloud Photos.

What the Hidden album does not do

  • It does not give the Hidden album a password that differs from the iPhone passcode.
  • It does not provide a decoy password, intrusion photograph, private browser, or separate folder credentials.
  • It does not move the media outside Apple’s Photos library.
  • It does not protect another copy that you exported, shared, saved in another app, or left in a backup or message thread.

Hidden and Recently Deleted are separate collections, each with its own behavior and authentication requirements. Before considering a photo removed, check for copies in Recently Deleted, shared albums, messages, cloud services, Files, and other photo apps. The native feature is best understood as authenticated concealment inside Photos—not as a separately audited, independently encrypted container.

2. Keepsafe: best mainstream third-party vault for convenience

Keepsafe is the most natural choice for someone who wants a polished vault with organization and backup rather than just a hidden folder. Its U.S. App Store listing describes PIN protection, biometric access, custom albums, an integrated camera, photo backup, Safe Send, and synchronization across Keepsafe installations.

The listing also describes Keepsafe Premium features such as individual album locks, a private cloud with up to 10,000 items, space-saving cloud storage, trash recovery, custom album covers, and ad removal. It reports more than 70 million users and a 4.7 rating from roughly 378,000 ratings in the indexed snapshot. Those figures are listing or company claims and should not be confused with an independent security assessment.

Keepsafe makes the most sense when you want to access the same private collection on more than one device or platform, or when losing the phone must not mean losing the photos. Its trade-off is the cloud-oriented model. The App Store listing describes synchronization and Private Cloud, while Apple’s privacy label says the developer may use usage data for tracking and third-party advertising. Recurring monthly and yearly Premium purchase options appear in the listing, but prices vary by storefront and can change.

Choose Keepsafe when: you value album organization, recovery, and multi-device convenience more than keeping the entire workflow local. Do not choose it solely because of its rating; a rating measures user experience, not the strength of its encryption, authentication recovery, server controls, or key management.

  • Online video installation instruction: Easiest Installation - removing dust and aligning it properly before actual installation, enjoy your screen as if it wasn't there.

3. Private Photo Vault: best for decoy access and break-in reports

Private Photo Vault is the strongest category fit when your requirement is more specific than ordinary concealment. Its listing includes password, PIN, and pattern locks; password-protected albums; a decoy password; Face Down Lock; private browsing; import and export tools; and break-in reports that can include a photo and GPS information.

The decoy password is useful for a situation where revealing an apparently harmless vault is preferable to revealing the real collection. The break-in feature is intended to document failed access attempts. Neither feature should be treated as proof that the app can defeat forensic examination, a compromised phone, spyware, or an attacker with access to the device and account.

The app also offers an optional Cloud Vault. According to the listing, Cloud Vault uses a password supplied by the user, that password is not backed up to the vendor’s servers, and employees cannot view Cloud Vault photos. These are developer statements, not independent findings. The listing also warns that the free version does not back up files to Cloud Vault, so users should confirm the exact plan and behavior before deleting local originals.

The indexed App Store snapshot shows a 4.8 rating from approximately one million ratings and compatibility requiring iOS 15 or later. Apple’s privacy label says the developer may link usage data and advertising data to the user, and may collect photos or videos, identifiers, usage data, purchases, and diagnostics for listed purposes. These disclosures deserve attention, but they still do not establish that the app is categorically safer or less safe than Keepsafe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Private Photo Vault when: a decoy password, intrusion evidence, or a more elaborate vault is worth the added complexity. Test its recovery and cloud behavior with non-sensitive files first.

4. Secure Folder: best for private files beyond photos

Secure Folder: Photo Vault is aimed at users who want a private-file organizer rather than a photo-only locker. Its listing describes storage for photos, videos, contacts, notes, passwords, and other files, with Face ID, Touch ID, and PIN access. It also advertises individual album or folder locks, a fake passcode, and importing from the Camera, Photo Library, Files, or Wi-Fi.

Its optional iCloud Sync is described as using the user’s private iCloud storage. The listing says content stays on the device or in private iCloud rather than on the developer’s servers. Keep that wording attributed to the listing: the available research does not independently verify the app’s encryption, server architecture, or iCloud implementation.

The indexed snapshot shows a 4.5 rating from 551 ratings and iPhone and iPad availability. Secure Folder is a good fit if a single private workspace for media, credentials, notes, and documents is more useful than a narrowly focused photo vault. It is unnecessary overhead if all you need is to hide a handful of images in Photos.

5. Secret Photo Vault: App Lock: best for an offline-oriented workflow

Secret Photo Vault: App Lock positions itself as an encrypted vault protected by a strong PIN, with separate PINs for private albums and an app lock. Its listing describes an offline workflow with no account, cloud, synchronization, or tracking. That makes it a plausible choice for readers who deliberately do not want a vendor account or online backup.

There is an important trade-off: local-only convenience also means local-only risk. A lost, damaged, reset, or replaced iPhone may leave you without a recovery path. Before importing originals, determine whether the app supports a reliable export and whether its data survives an update, device migration, or reinstall. The words encrypted and no tracking are product-page claims, not the result of an independent audit.

The indexed snapshot shows a 4.5 rating from 85 ratings, a much smaller sample than the ratings shown for Keepsafe or Private Photo Vault. That does not prove the app is inferior, but it does mean the rating provides less evidence about broad user experience.

A related app, Secret Photo Vault: Safe Files, explicitly claims that data never leaves the phone and adds storage for passwords, notes, contacts, emails, documents, reminders, screenshots, and voice memos. Its listing shows an age rating of 16+ and 842 ratings in the supplied snapshot. Treat its local-storage and privacy language in the same way: useful for understanding the intended model, not independent verification.

6. Hide it Pro: best for disguise behavior and export-heavy use

Hide it Pro is a familiar, high-volume option for users who want straightforward media vaulting. Its listing advertises multiple photo and video albums, GIF support, imports from the phone gallery, iTunes, or camera, an in-app viewer, one-tap export, automatic locking, and cloud backup. It also describes a disguise screen that can make the app appear to have crashed when someone opens it.

The indexed listing shows a 4.7 rating from about 25,000 ratings. Hide it Pro is a reasonable choice if disguise behavior and convenient export matter. However, because the description advertises cloud backup without providing a detailed explanation of key management in the indexed material, it should not be described as local-only, zero-knowledge, or automatically private.

Its export feature also creates an operational risk: every export can create another unprotected copy in Photos, Files, Messages, or a sharing destination. Build a deletion check into your workflow after exporting.

7. Folder Lock: best as a broader security container

Folder Lock goes well beyond photos. Its App Store listing includes password-protected photos and videos, documents, contacts, wallet cards, notes, audio, a password manager, private browsing, PC and Mac transfer, and cloud backup and synchronization through Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox. It also advertises failed-login logging and unauthorized-login photos.

This is the best fit when photos are only one part of a larger private-data collection. The cost of that breadth is complexity: there are more features, more import and export paths, and more cloud or transfer settings to understand. For a few private pictures, Apple’s Hidden album is simpler and exposes less functionality.

The free listing’s indexed snapshot shows a 4.2 rating from approximately 1,800 ratings. A separate paid Folder Lock Pro listing also exists. Confirm which edition you are installing and what features are included in your region before moving data into it.

How to choose: match the app to the threat and recovery model

Your priority Best starting point Why
Keep photos out of ordinary Photos views without downloading anything Apple Hidden album Native, simple, and protected by device authentication
Access a collection across devices and recover it after phone loss Keepsafe Its listing emphasizes synchronization, backup, and Private Cloud
Show a harmless collection under pressure Private Photo Vault It advertises a decoy password and password-protected albums
Protect photos, documents, notes, contacts, and passwords together Secure Folder or Folder Lock Both are broader private-file containers
Avoid accounts, cloud, and synchronization Secret Photo Vault: App Lock Its listing explicitly describes that offline/no-account model
Disguise the app and export media frequently Hide it Pro It advertises a disguise screen, viewer, and one-tap export

Do not use the word private as if it answers every security question. A person trying to avoid casual discovery has a different requirement from someone protecting files against a lost phone, a shared device, cloud compromise, or a person who knows the device passcode.

Privacy and security: what photo vault apps can and cannot protect

Hidden is not the same as independently encrypted

Apple’s Hidden album controls visibility and authentication within Photos. That is useful, but it is not a separate password-protected security boundary with a different recovery system. Third-party listings variously claim encryption, local-only storage, or encrypted cloud backup, but the available sources do not establish a common, independently tested baseline across these apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, an app can have a convincing lock screen while still leaving important questions unanswered: Are thumbnails or originals stored elsewhere? What happens after a forgotten PIN? Can a recovery process give the vendor access? Does cloud sync use a key controlled by the user? What happens when the app is deleted? The App Store listing alone may not answer all of these.

Cloud backup protects against one risk and adds others

Cloud backup can save a collection when an iPhone is lost, destroyed, or replaced. It also introduces account security, recovery, server, synchronization, and key-management considerations.

  • Keepsafe: advertises synchronization and its own Private Cloud. That is a convenience-first model and should be evaluated as such.
  • Private Photo Vault: advertises a Cloud Vault using a user-provided password that it says is not backed up to its servers. This is a vendor claim, not an independent audit.
  • Secure Folder: advertises optional synchronization to the user’s private iCloud storage and says content remains on the device or in private iCloud rather than the developer’s servers.
  • Apple Hidden album: follows the iCloud Photos model if iCloud Photos is enabled, synchronizing the hidden state across devices using the same Apple Account.

These models are not interchangeable. Before enabling any backup, ask where the data is stored, who controls the encryption keys, how account recovery works, whether the free tier backs up anything, and whether deleting a local copy also deletes the cloud copy.

App Store privacy labels are signals, not security audits

Apple states that App Store privacy information is supplied by developers and has not been verified by Apple. For that reason, privacy labels can help you compare disclosed data practices, but they do not prove that an app’s vault is encrypted correctly or that its server cannot read your files.

In the supplied listings, Keepsafe’s label says usage data may be used for tracking and third-party advertising. Private Photo Vault’s label says usage and advertising data may be linked to the user and that photos or videos, identifiers, usage data, purchases, and diagnostics may be collected for listed purposes. Read the label and the developer’s privacy policy immediately before installing because both the disclosures and the app’s behavior can change.

Copies outside the vault are the most common failure

A vault cannot protect a copy that remains in Photos, Recently Deleted, a message attachment, a shared album, Files, an email, another cloud provider, or an exported folder. Importing a photo into an app does not necessarily delete the original. After testing that the vault can open and restore the item, review the original location and Recently Deleted before assuming there is only one copy.

Safer setup checklist

  1. Define the goal. If you only want casual concealment, start with Hidden. If you need a separate credential, decoy access, or private files beyond photos, consider a third-party vault.
  2. Use the strongest available lock. Enable Face ID or Touch ID where appropriate and use a strong, unique vault PIN or password if the app supports one. A vault PIN that is the same as a commonly shared device code provides less separation.
  3. Test with disposable photos. Import a few non-sensitive images, lock and unlock the app, export them, delete them, and confirm exactly where copies appear.
  4. Test recovery before importing originals. Check whether recovery requires an account, a cloud backup, a master password, or support contact. If the app is local-only, understand the consequences of losing the phone or deleting the app.
  5. Choose cloud settings deliberately. Turn synchronization on only after deciding whether the protection against device loss outweighs the additional account and server exposure.
  6. Check automatic locking. Set the shortest practical timeout and verify what happens when the app goes into the background, the phone locks, or another app opens.
  7. Clean up duplicates. Review Photos, Recently Deleted, Files, messages, shared albums, and other backup services after importing or exporting.
  8. Keep the phone and app updated. Use a supported iOS version and install updates from the official App Store. Recheck permissions and privacy disclosures after major updates.

Should you use a third-party vault at all?

Use Apple’s Hidden album when simplicity and avoiding another vendor are more important than separate credentials or advanced features. A third-party app becomes worthwhile when it solves a requirement Apple does not: decoy access, intrusion evidence, independent album locks, private browsing, private-file organization, explicit offline positioning, or cross-device backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before trusting an app with irreplaceable or highly sensitive media, look past the star rating. Confirm its current minimum iOS version, subscription terms, privacy label, backup behavior, recovery design, and export semantics. The best app is the one whose storage and recovery model you understand—not necessarily the one with the largest rating count.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Apple’s Hidden album as secure as a photo vault app?

It is strong for casual concealment inside Photos and is protected by Face ID, Touch ID, or the iPhone passcode. It does not provide an independent vault password, decoy mode, or separate storage boundary. A third-party app may offer those features, but its encryption, cloud design, and privacy claims require separate evaluation.

Does hiding a photo delete the original from my iPhone?

No. Hiding changes where the item appears in Photos. It does not automatically remove copies from Recently Deleted, messages, Files, shared albums, other cloud services, or exports. Check those locations separately.

Which iPhone photo vault is best without cloud storage?

Secret Photo Vault: App Lock is the clearest fit based on its listing, which describes an offline workflow with no account, cloud, or synchronization. That is a product-page claim rather than an independent audit, and local-only storage means you must plan for device loss and recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are decoy passwords proof that an app is secure?

No. A decoy password can help conceal the existence of a real collection during casual inspection, but it does not prove resistance to forensic analysis, spyware, account compromise, or an attacker with the unlocked device.

Will hidden photos sync to my other Apple devices?

If iCloud Photos is enabled, Apple documents that hiding a photo on one device hides it on other devices using the same Apple Account. If you do not want that synchronization, review your iCloud Photos setup before relying on the Hidden album.

What should I do before deleting a photo from the normal Photos library after importing it into a vault?

First verify that the vault can open and restore the imported copy. Then check the original Photos library, Recently Deleted, and any other services or apps that may contain duplicates. Also test the vault’s backup and recovery process before deleting an irreplaceable original.

The Bottom Line

Start with Apple’s Hidden album unless you have a specific reason to add a third-party service. Pick Keepsafe for polished organization and cloud-enabled convenience, Private Photo Vault for decoy access and break-in reports, Secure Folder or Folder Lock for broader private-file storage, Secret Photo Vault: App Lock for an offline-oriented workflow, and Hide it Pro for disguise and export features. Whatever you choose, verify backups, recovery, and duplicate deletion yourself; a hidden photo is not necessarily an encrypted photo, and a vault cannot protect copies stored elsewhere.
