There is no verified single consumer switch that disables every AI feature in Google Chrome. Chrome separates its controls by feature. To reduce or stop Chrome’s AI functions, turn off the individual settings available in your profile, remove downloaded on-device models, and hide entry points such as Gemini or AI Mode where those options are provided.
If Chrome is managed by a business or school, an administrator can apply broader controls through Chrome Enterprise policies. The exact menus and feature availability can vary by Chrome version, country, language, device, age, account type, and rollout status.
Quick answer: where to turn off Chrome’s AI features
On a personal Chrome profile, check these locations:
- AI-powered History search: open More > Settings > AI Innovations > History search, powered by AI, then turn it off.
- On-device AI models: open More > Settings > System > On-device AI, then turn the setting off.
- Gemini in Chrome: open More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome. Use the available controls to hide Gemini and disable permissions such as microphone, precise location, current-tab sharing, and—where available—automatic browsing.
- AI Mode in the address bar: right-click the address bar and clear Always show AI Mode.
- Help me write and Create themes with AI: availability and controls vary. Do not assume that every Chrome installation has a separate off switch for these features.
These controls do different things. Turning off one feature does not turn off the others, and hiding an icon or shortcut is not the same as disabling the underlying service.

1. Disable History search, powered by AI
Chrome’s AI-powered history search lets users search their browsing history in a more conversational way. To turn it off on a computer:
- Open Chrome.
- Select More—the three-dot menu—in the top-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Open AI Innovations.
- Select History search, powered by AI.
- Turn the feature off.
Google currently documents this as a computer feature with eligibility that includes the United States and English-language Chrome. It may not appear for every user.
When enabled, Chrome stores the title, URL, and page content of pages visited afterward locally on the device and encrypts that content. Google also warns that the feature may affect performance. Turning the setting off stops the named feature, but do not describe that action as a guaranteed retroactive deletion of every item that may already have been captured. If you also need to remove browsing history, use Chrome’s separate history-deletion controls.
2. Remove Chrome’s on-device AI models
Chrome can download generative-AI models to run certain features locally. If your goal is to remove those downloaded models, use this setting:
- Open Chrome’s three-dot More menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Select System.
- Open On-device AI.
- Turn the setting off.
Chrome says that turning off On-device AI deletes its downloaded on-device generative-AI models. Features that rely on those models will no longer work. If you turn the setting on again later, Chrome may need an internet connection and time to download the models again.
This is not an all-AI kill switch. Some Chrome AI features do not use the on-device generative models, so they may continue to operate after the local models are removed. You must disable those features separately.
3. Control or hide Gemini in Chrome
On an eligible computer, open More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome. Depending on your account and device, the page can include controls for:
- Showing or hiding Gemini at the top of Chrome.
- On macOS, showing or hiding Gemini in the menu bar and enabling or disabling its shortcut.
- On Windows, showing or hiding Gemini in the system tray and enabling or disabling its shortcut.
- Allowing or blocking precise location access.
- Allowing or blocking microphone access.
- Controlling whether the current tab is shared by default.
- Turning off Let Gemini browse for you, when that option is available.
These controls let you reduce Gemini’s visibility and permissions. They do not establish that Gemini can be completely uninstalled or globally deactivated from this page.

Gemini availability and account requirements
Gemini in Chrome is conditional rather than universal. Availability can depend on a supported region, language, computer, current Chrome version, signed-in Chrome profile, and age eligibility. It is unavailable in Incognito. A work or school account may also require an administrator to enable it.
If you do not see the Gemini settings, update Chrome, confirm that you are using the intended signed-in profile, and check whether the feature is available for your region and account. The absence of the menu does not necessarily mean that a setting is malfunctioning.
Optional: turn off automatic browsing
Let Gemini browse for you is a separate permission when offered. Google currently describes this option as requiring an eligible user in the United States who is at least 18, an English device language, a personal Google Account, current Chrome, opt-in to Gemini in Chrome, and Google AI Pro or Ultra. Those requirements can change as the feature rolls out.
If the option appears in Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome, turn it off there. A subscription is not required for the basic task of reducing other Chrome AI entry points, and this optional feature is not a reason to purchase hardware or another product.

Chrome can show an AI Mode entry point in the address bar. To hide that particular surface:
- Right-click the Chrome address bar.
- Clear Always show AI Mode.
Chrome describes this as hiding AI Mode and Add tabs and more from that address-bar surface. It is more accurate to call this a visibility change than a complete AI Mode opt-out.
AI Mode is a Google Search capability that may also appear through other surfaces, including the New Tab Page. Its availability can vary by device, country, language, and rollout. Hiding the address-bar shortcut does not prove that AI Mode is disabled everywhere.
AI Mode can still be used without Web & App Activity, although Google says Web & App Activity is needed to continue prior searches. That setting is therefore not a universal AI disable switch either.

Help me write is an AI writing feature available in some Chrome environments. Google currently documents eligibility that includes a user in the United States who is at least 18, English Chrome, Chrome sign-in, and Make searches and browsing better turned on. The documented desktop platforms are Windows, Mac, and Linux.
If Help me write is missing, check the account setting directly by opening:
chrome://settings/account
Look for Make searches and browsing better. However, do not promise that every consumer Chrome build has a separate, universal Help me write off switch. The controls shown can depend on the version, account, rollout, and management status of the browser.
Privacy consideration
When Help me write is used, Google says the text entered, along with page content and the page URL, is sent to Google. Google describes using that data to improve the feature and advises users not to enter personal, medical, financial, or other sensitive information or use the feature on sensitive websites.

6. Create themes with AI
Create themes with AI is another optional feature. Google currently documents it for eligible signed-in adults in the United States, through:
- Open a new tab.
- Select Customize Chrome.
- Choose Change theme.
- Select Create with AI.
If the option is not present, there may be no action required: the feature may simply not be available to your account, region, language, device, or Chrome rollout.
Google describes this as an online feature and says that selected options, feedback, and theme use may be collected to improve it. Its process can include human review. Avoid experimental flags or unofficial modifications as a substitute for a documented setting.

How businesses and schools can apply broader controls
For managed Chrome deployments, the supported broad control is the Chrome Enterprise policy GenAiDefaultSettings. In Google Admin Console, its values are:

This is the closest documented broad organizational control, but “broad” does not mean “every AI-related capability.” The policy applies to covered generative-AI features, is profile-level, and is supported through Google Admin Console. Chrome Enterprise documentation notes that Gemini in Chrome, Google Lens, and AI Mode are subject to their own policies, terms, or guarantees.
Feature-specific enterprise policies
Administrators can combine the default policy with narrower controls:
- HelpMeWriteSettings: allows the feature with model improvement, allows it without model improvement, or disallows it. The values are
0,1, and2, respectively. - CreateThemesSettings: uses the same three-value pattern for Create themes with AI.
- AIModeSettings: controls AI Mode integrations in the address bar and New Tab Page search box. A value of
1makes those integrations unavailable. Google must be the default search engine for the integration to operate. - SearchContentSharingSettings: controls sharing page or file content to AI Mode and can hide or disable related sharing entry points and the side panel. It does not control AI Mode on the web.
- GenAILocalFoundationalModelSettings: can stop the local foundational model from downloading and remove an existing copy. This is a browser-level policy and cannot be set through Cloud user policies.
Administrators should use the current Chrome Enterprise policy documentation and Google Admin Console rather than treating registry snippets, flags, extensions, or another Chrome build as a universal solution. Policies can change, and the policy catalog may include policies that are not yet broadly released.
If a setting is missing
First update Chrome, then check eligibility. A missing control can be explained by the browser version, region, language, device, age group, Chrome profile, account type, Incognito mode, gradual rollout, or an organization’s policy.
- Open Settings > About Chrome and allow Chrome to check for updates.
- Return to the relevant feature’s settings page.
- Confirm that you are not using Incognito, where Gemini in Chrome is unavailable.
- Check that you are signed in to the intended Chrome profile and Google Account.
- Check whether your country, language, age, and device meet the feature’s requirements.
- If Chrome says it is managed, contact the organization’s administrator.
Do not recommend a Chrome flag, registry hack, extension, or physical accessory as the official method for disabling all Chrome AI. The documented controls are feature-specific for personal profiles and policy-based for managed deployments.
Recommended setup for different goals
“I want fewer AI buttons and prompts”
Hide Gemini where the setting is available, clear Always show AI Mode in the address bar, and avoid optional features such as Create themes with AI and Help me write.
“I do not want local generative-AI models on my computer”
Turn off Settings > System > On-device AI. Remember that this removes local models only; it does not disable every remotely powered or separately implemented AI feature.
“I do not want Chrome to use specific permissions with Gemini”
Open Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome and disable the listed permissions individually, especially microphone, precise location, current-tab sharing, and automatic browsing if shown.
“I need to restrict AI for an organization”
Start with GenAiDefaultSettings in Google Admin Console, then add feature-specific policies for Help me write, Create themes with AI, AI Mode, search-content sharing, or local foundational models as required by your organization’s policy.
Why the April 2026 wording needs qualification
Chrome’s menus and AI features are actively changing and rolling out gradually. The controls described here reflect current documentation verified in August 2026, not a claim that every option looked identical in April 2026. Google may rename settings, change eligibility, add new controls, or retire features after publication. Recheck the relevant Chrome help or Enterprise policy page after a major browser update.

Can I disable all AI in Google Chrome with one switch?
Not through a verified universal consumer switch. Chrome provides separate controls for History search, on-device models, Gemini permissions and visibility, AI Mode entry points, and other features. Managed organizations have a broader GenAiDefaultSettings policy for covered generative-AI features, with important exceptions and feature-specific policies.
Does turning off On-device AI disable Gemini and AI Mode?
No. Turning off On-device AI deletes downloaded local generative-AI models and disables features that rely on them. Google says some other AI features do not use those models and may continue to work.
Does clearing “Always show AI Mode” turn off AI Mode completely?
No. It hides AI Mode and Add tabs and more from the address-bar surface. AI Mode may still be available through other Google Search or Chrome surfaces.
Why can’t I find the AI Innovations menu?
The menu and its features are not identical for every user. Update Chrome, check your region, language, device, age, account, and profile eligibility, and make sure you are not in Incognito. A work or school administrator may also control or hide the setting.
Does turning off History search delete information Chrome already stored?
The documented control turns off the named feature. Do not assume it retroactively deletes all information that may already have been captured. Use Chrome’s separate history-deletion controls if you also need to remove browsing history.

For a personal Chrome profile, disable each AI feature or permission you do not want and treat On-device AI as only one layer of control. For a company or school, use GenAiDefaultSettings plus feature-specific Chrome Enterprise policies. There is no supported basis for calling a flag, registry tweak, extension, or hidden shortcut a universal “turn off all AI” solution.
