Short answer: Google does not offer one switch for turning off Gemini across every service. To get the lowest-Gemini setup, change Android back to Google Assistant, disable Gmail’s three smart-feature controls, restrict Chrome Gemini, turn off Gemini in Photos and Messages, control Meet, use Search’s Web filter, and disconnect Gemini’s Connected Apps. Search, Maps, YouTube and some Workspace interfaces still have limits.
There is no single Google-wide switch that turns off Gemini—and every other AI feature—in one step. The closest practical shutdown is to change Android back to Google Assistant, disable Gmail and Workspace smart features, restrict Gemini in Chrome, turn off Gemini features in Photos and Messages, control Meet, use Search’s Web filter, and disconnect Gemini’s connected apps.
These controls are separate because Google services use different AI features and settings. Some features—especially standard Search AI Overviews, parts of Maps and YouTube, and certain persistent interface elements—cannot currently be disabled completely for personal accounts.
Choose what “turn off Gemini” means for you

The fastest multi-service fix: Gmail’s three controls
For a personal Google account, Gmail is the most important control centre for reducing Gemini and Workspace AI features. On a computer:

- Open Gmail.
- Select Settings, then See all settings.
- In the General tab, find Smart features.
- Turn off Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat and Meet.
- In the same area, open Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Turn off Smart features in Google Workspace.
- Turn off Smart features in other Google products.
- Select Save.
Google treats these as separate settings:
- Gmail, Chat and Meet: disables features such as Smart Compose, Smart Reply, automatic categorisation and summary cards.
- Google Workspace: controls many Gemini and cross-application personalisation features in Gmail, Docs, Drive, Calendar, Sheets, Slides, Chat and Meet.
- Other Google products: limits the use of Workspace data for personalisation in products such as Maps, Wallet, Gemini and Search services.
Turning them off also removes useful non-Gemini conveniences, including Smart Compose, Smart Reply, automatic categories, package tracking and travel cards. It does not disable every AI feature that Google may show independently. Google’s current explanation and account-level instructions are in its Workspace smart-features help page.
In the Gmail mobile app, select the relevant account under Gmail → Menu → Settings and look for smart-feature or data-privacy controls. The exact labels vary by account and app version; desktop Gmail provides the clearest canonical path.
Turn Gemini off as the Android assistant
If Gemini opens when you say “Hey Google” or use touch activation, switch the default assistant back to Google Assistant:
- Open the Gemini app.
- Tap Menu.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Select Switch to Google Assistant.
- Choose Google Assistant and confirm.
Google says Google Assistant will then respond to “Hey Google” and touch activation instead of Gemini. See Google’s Android Gemini assistant controls.
To prevent accidental activation as far as your phone allows:
- Open Gemini → Profile picture → Settings → Talk to Gemini hands-free → Hey Google, then turn it off.
- Open Gemini → Profile picture → Settings → Gemini on lock screen, then turn it off.
Labels differ by Android manufacturer and software version. On some phones, particularly some Pixel models, you may also see Settings → Apps → Gemini → Disable. This is device-dependent and is an optional extra—not a universal way to remove Gemini from Google services.
Deleting the standalone Gemini app is not enough on every Android phone. Google says Gemini is hosted by the Google app, so removing the separate app does not necessarily remove every Gemini-powered integration. Its Gemini Apps Privacy Hub explains this limitation.

Restrict Gemini in Chrome
Chrome’s Gemini controls affect Gemini in the browser. They do not control AI Overviews in Google Search.
On desktop Chrome:
- Open Chrome → Settings.
- Select AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Preferences, turn off Show Gemini at the top of the browser.
- If displayed, turn off Show Gemini in Mac menu bar and Show Gemini in system tray.
- Under Permissions, turn off Precise location, Microphone, Share current tab by default and Let Gemini browse for you.
Gemini in Chrome can use the current tab and, when permitted, share up to 10 open tabs. The official Chrome Gemini settings describe the current controls.
These settings hide the launcher or restrict access to browser context; they do not disable Search AI Overviews. Turning off Chrome Gemini also does not necessarily remove every AI-powered Google feature displayed in a webpage.
For managed Chrome users
A Workspace administrator can disable Chrome Gemini through Admin console → Devices → Chrome → Settings → Generative AI → Gemini integrations → Do not allow feature.

Google treats the Chrome policy and the Gemini-app setting as separate requirements. Changes can take up to 24 hours to apply. See Google’s Gemini in Chrome administrator controls.
Reduce AI in Google Search
Use the Web filter for link-only results
Standard AI Overviews are currently treated by Google as a core Search feature, so personal accounts do not have a permanent universal off switch. After searching, select the Web filter. If it is not visible in the filter row, open More and choose Web.
The Web view shows text-based links without an AI Overview, but you must select it for each search. It is not a permanent account-wide opt-out. Google documents this in its AI Overview help page.
Leave optional Search Labs experiments
If you joined an optional Search Labs experiment:
- Open a new browser tab.
- Select Search Labs → Manage.
- Turn off AI in Search or AI Mode, depending on which experiment is enabled.
This only exits optional experiments. It does not disable standard AI Overviews. See Google’s AI Mode in Search Labs documentation.

Google’s Personalized Recommendations in Search services setting can reduce personalised responses, but it does not turn off AI generation, erase activity or affect personalisation in every Google product. It is an additional privacy control, not a Gemini master switch. See Google’s Search-services personalisation settings.
Google Docs, Drive, Sheets, Slides, Calendar and Chat
Personal accounts generally do not have a separate master switch inside each Workspace app. The Gmail controls above are the main user-level controls for many Workspace Gemini features.
They apply to features Google lists across Docs, Sheets, Slides, Vids and Forms, such as drafting, summarising, image generation, Smart Fill and data analysis. Drive, Calendar and Chat also have service-specific Gemini surfaces that may vary by account, subscription and rollout. Google’s current feature list is in Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Vids and Forms.
If a Gemini bar remains visible at the bottom of Docs after you disable Workspace features, look for:

Gemini menu → Bottom bar preferences → Turn off, Hide or Minimize
The label varies across accounts and rollouts. This only changes visibility; it is not proof that Workspace AI processing is disabled. If the option is unavailable, the remaining bar may be controlled by the account type, administrator policy or a server-side interface rollout.
Turn off Gemini features in Google Photos
Photos has a separate Gemini control. On Android or iPhone:

- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Photos settings.
- Open Preferences → Gemini features in Photos.
- Turn off Use Gemini in Photos.
If you only want to disable conversational photo search, turn off Search with Ask Photos. Google says opting out of Ask Photos also removes the conversational Help me edit photo-editing feature. Classic Photos search remains available where Ask Photos is disabled or unavailable. Availability depends on region, language, account and rollout. See Google Photos’ Ask Photos controls.

Hide Gemini in Google Messages
In the Android Messages app, use:
Messages → Profile picture → Messages settings → Gemini in Messages → Show Gemini button → Off
This hides the Gemini launcher in Messages. It is an app-interface setting, not a universal shutdown of Gemini or other AI features. The availability and labels can vary. Google documents Gemini in Messages in its Android help; the current off-switch path is also reflected in Google Help Community guidance.
Control Gemini in Google Meet and Calendar
Disable Ask Gemini in Meet
The meeting host can disable Ask Gemini before or during a meeting.
Before the meeting, in Google Calendar:
Edit event → Video call options → Gemini → Meeting attendees can use Ask Gemini → Off

Host controls → Gemini → Off
A participant who is not the host may need to ask the host to change this setting. Turning off personal smart features prevents that user from prompting Ask Gemini, but it does not necessarily prevent other participants from using it. See Google’s Ask Gemini in Meet controls.
Stop automatic Meet note-taking
To turn off automatic note-taking for future meetings:
- Go to meet.google.com.
- Open Settings.
- Select Meeting records.
- Under Automatic note taking for all future meetings, choose Off.
For one Calendar meeting, use Edit event → Video call options → Meeting records, then clear Take notes with Gemini. Hosts and administrators may control whether participants can start or stop note-taking. Google’s current instructions are in its Meet automatic note-taking help.
Google Maps: only partial control is available
Google documents Gemini and other AI-powered Maps features, including conversational discovery and location-related data handling, but its public consumer documentation does not provide one switch that disables every AI feature in Maps.
Switching Android back to Google Assistant and disabling “Hey Google” reduces Gemini activation during navigation. It does not guarantee that every Maps AI surface, including conversational discovery or AI-generated place answers, disappears. YouTube: no universal Gemini off switch
YouTube’s AI features are controlled separately from Gemini. Depending on your account and region, you may encounter:

- Ask YouTube or conversational video search experiments.
- Conversational AI about videos.
- AI-generated comment topics.
- Creator-facing tools such as Ask Studio and other generative features.
You can dismiss some recommendation cards with Not interested, but Google says the “Ask for videos any way you like” card cannot be permanently disabled. Comment topics also cannot currently be turned off. See Google’s documentation for Ask YouTube, the YouTube AI recommendation card and YouTube comment topics.
Disconnecting YouTube from Gemini’s Connected Apps can reduce account-linked personalisation, but Gemini may still use public information from YouTube. Disconnecting an app does not necessarily remove every AI feature inside YouTube itself.

Connected Apps determine which Google services Gemini can access for account-linked responses. On the Gemini website:
Settings & help → Connected Apps
Turn off any listed services you do not want connected, such as:
- Google Workspace
- Google Photos
- YouTube
- Search services
- Other available Google apps
On Android, the same control may appear under Personal Intelligence → Connected Apps.
Google warns that Connected Apps vary by device, account, region and application. Gemini may still use public information from Google Search, Maps, Flights, Hotels and YouTube. Disconnecting an app also does not delete information already stored in Gemini activity or already shared with the other service. See Google’s Connected Apps controls.

Activity controls privacy and retention; they do not turn Gemini off everywhere.
On the Gemini website
- Open Gemini.
- Select Settings & help → Activity.
- Select On.
- Choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity.
On Android
Use Gemini → Menu → Profile picture → Gemini Apps Activity → On, then choose the desired option.
With Keep Activity turned off, Google says future conversations may still be retained for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback, even though they do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. On Android, many connected apps become unavailable; Utilities, Phone, Messages and WhatsApp may remain available. Read Google’s Gemini Apps Activity and retention guidance.
Turning off activity does not delete data that Gmail, Photos, Drive or another service has already received. It also does not erase ordinary Web & App Activity or the history stored by other Google services. Review and delete those histories separately if that is part of your privacy goal.

Work and school accounts have different controls from personal accounts. An administrator can disable the Gemini app through:

Admin console → Generative AI → Gemini app → Service status → Off
Google says this controls gemini.google.com, the Gemini mobile apps and Gemini in Chrome. It does not turn off other AI features embedded inside Workspace services. Administrators must configure those separately.

Administrators may also need separate controls for Chrome Gemini integrations, Meet note-taking and Workspace smart features. Workspace edition, administrator privileges and feature availability vary. Google’s documentation is available for Gemini app administration and Workspace smart-feature administration.
Many Workspace and Chrome policy changes can take up to 24 hours to reach users. In the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, Google says Workspace smart features are off by default, although feature availability still depends on country, language, age, account type, subscription and staged rollout. Troubleshooting when Gemini still appears
- A setting is missing: Check whether you are using a personal, work or school account. Region, age, Workspace edition, administrator policies and staged rollouts can change which controls appear.
- Gemini remains in Docs: Look for Gemini menu → Bottom bar preferences. Hiding the bar changes visibility, not necessarily the underlying Workspace AI availability.
- Search AI returns after disabling Chrome Gemini: This is expected. Chrome Gemini and Search AI Overviews are separate controls. Use the Web filter after a search.
- Gmail still shows AI: Confirm that all three Gmail/Workspace smart-feature controls are off, save the settings, refresh Gmail and reload already-open Workspace tabs.
- An administrator change has not applied: Allow up to 24 hours, then sign out and back in or restart the managed browser.
- Turning off Keep Activity breaks integrations: This is expected. Keep Activity affects retention and Connected Apps, not just the visible history list.
- Old data remains elsewhere: Deleting Gemini activity does not delete content already shared with Gmail, Photos, Drive or other services.
- Maps or YouTube still show AI: These products have independent AI features and no documented universal consumer off switch.
Verify the lowest-Gemini setup
After changing the settings, test each service you use:
- Say “Hey Google” or use touch activation and confirm that Google Assistant—not Gemini—responds, if you left voice activation enabled.
- Open Gmail and confirm Smart Compose, Smart Reply and summary cards no longer appear.
- Open Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive and check that Gemini actions are unavailable or that the Gemini interface is hidden.
- Open Chrome and confirm the Gemini launcher is hidden and that microphone, precise location, tab sharing and auto-browse permissions are off.
- Run a Google search and select Web; confirm that the results page shows links without an AI Overview.
- Open Photos and confirm that Ask Photos and conversational editing are disabled if you turned off Gemini features in Photos.
- Open Messages and confirm the Gemini button is hidden.
- Create or edit a Meet event and confirm Ask Gemini and automatic note-taking are disabled where you have control.
- Review Gemini’s Connected Apps and confirm that unwanted services are disconnected.
- Review Gemini Apps Activity and confirm that Keep Activity is off if you chose that privacy setting.
Google frequently changes labels and rolls out features gradually, so a missing or returning button does not necessarily mean one of these settings failed. The important distinction is whether you are hiding a launcher, blocking account-linked access, disabling a Workspace feature or changing retention—each is a different control.

Can I turn off Gemini everywhere with one setting?
No. Google does not currently provide one universal consumer switch that disables Gemini and every AI-powered feature across all Google services. Controls are split among Android, Gmail, Workspace, Chrome, Search, Photos, Messages, Meet and individual products.
Does turning off Gemini Apps Activity turn off Gemini?
No. Turning off Gemini Apps Activity mainly controls saved conversations, retention and some Connected Apps. Future conversations may still be retained for up to 72 hours, and data already shared with Gmail, Photos, Drive or other services is not automatically deleted.
Can I permanently disable Google Search AI Overviews?
Not permanently. Select the Web filter after each search to view text links without an AI Overview. Leaving Search Labs experiments only disables optional experiments; it does not disable standard AI Overviews.

No. Maps and YouTube have separate AI features and Google’s current public documentation does not provide a universal consumer opt-out for all of them. You can reduce Gemini activation and disconnect account-linked apps, but some AI surfaces may remain.
How can a Google Workspace administrator disable Gemini?
Work and school administrators can disable the Gemini app, Chrome Gemini integrations and Workspace smart-feature defaults separately. These policies do not automatically disable every AI feature embedded in Workspace services, and changes may take up to 24 hours.
The Bottom Line
The most complete personal-account setup is: switch Android to Google Assistant, disable Hey Google and lock-screen Gemini, turn off all three Gmail smart-feature controls, disable Gemini in Photos and Messages, restrict Chrome permissions, use Search’s Web filter, disable Meet Gemini controls, disconnect Connected Apps and turn off Gemini Apps Activity if retention is the concern. This substantially reduces Gemini, but Google still does not offer a universal switch for every AI feature in Search, Maps, YouTube and other services.
