As of August 9, 2026, Apple’s current lineup has three models: the Apple Watch SE 3 at $249, the Apple Watch Series 11 at $399, and the Apple Watch Ultra 3 at $799 in the U.S. Choose the SE 3 for value, the Series 11 for the best everyday balance of health and fitness features, and the Ultra 3 for long battery life, outdoor activities, diving, precision GPS, and satellite connectivity.

For used buyers, Series 9, Series 10, Ultra 2, and SE 3 are the most attractive targets if long-term software support matters. Apple’s watchOS 27 preview supports those models and newer ones, while Series 6 through Series 8, SE 2, and the original Ultra remain on the watchOS 26 compatibility list but are not listed for watchOS 27.

Updated August 9, 2026. Prices and availability are primarily U.S.-specific. Health, cellular, satellite, and software features can vary by country, language, paired iPhone, carrier, model number, and regulatory approval.

Apple Watch naming explained

“Series 0” is not Apple’s official name

The first Apple Watch is officially called Apple Watch (1st generation). “Series 0” is an unofficial nickname used to distinguish it from Series 1, but it is useful search terminology rather than an Apple product name.

Series 1 and Series 2 launched together

Apple introduced Series 1 and Series 2 in 2016 as different versions of the original design. Series 1 was the faster, lower-cost refresh of the original Apple Watch. Series 2 added built-in GPS, stronger water resistance, and a brighter display. It is therefore misleading to describe Series 1 simply as the generation before Series 2 in a normal replacement cycle.

#1 Best Overall
Apple Watch Series 9 (GPS + LTE) 45MM Midnight Aluminum Case Black Sport Band (Renewed)
  • S9 SiP Processor: Advanced processor improves overall performance and enables on-device Siri functionality.

SE and Ultra are parallel product families

SE models are value-oriented Apple Watches that omit selected flagship features. Ultra models are larger, cellular-only adventure watches with more battery capacity, rugged construction, advanced GPS, and outdoor or diving features. They are not missing numbers in the regular Series line.

Nike, Hermès, Edition, and case materials are not separate generations

Nike and Hermès editions, the original Edition models, and aluminum, stainless-steel, or titanium configurations generally share the underlying generation’s processor, sensors, software ceiling, and core capabilities. They should be treated as collections or materials—not additional Apple Watch generations.

Every Apple Watch generation in chronological order

The list below counts each distinct hardware family. The “software position” reflects the situation at the August 9, 2026 cutoff; software compatibility does not mean that every feature in an operating-system release works on every compatible watch.

1. Apple Watch (1st generation), 2015

Apple’s original Watch became available on April 24, 2015, in the U.S. and eight other countries. It came in 38mm and 42mm cases, including aluminum Sport, stainless-steel, and luxury Edition versions. Its S1 system depended heavily on a paired iPhone and did not include built-in GPS.

The original established the product’s basic interaction model: the Digital Crown, wrist notifications, Apple Pay, activity tracking, watch faces, and third-party apps. It was designed around daily charging and is now a historical product rather than a sensible used purchase.

2026 software position: No current watchOS support. See Apple’s Apple Watch identification guide and the original launch announcement.

2. Apple Watch Series 1, 2016

Series 1 retained the original 38mm and 42mm aluminum form factor but introduced a dual-core processor. It did not add built-in GPS and retained the original line’s more limited water resistance. Its main benefit was faster performance at a lower price, not a new health or outdoor capability.

Used-buying verdict: Avoid as a practical 2026 purchase. It has no current watchOS support, an old battery, and limited compatibility with modern iPhones and apps.

Technical details are in Apple’s Series 1 specifications.

3. Apple Watch Series 2, 2016

Series 2 used the same basic 38mm and 42mm design but made a much more important capability jump than Series 1. It added built-in GPS, 50-meter water resistance, and a display rated at 1,000 nits. The dual-core processor and swimming-focused design made it the first genuinely useful outdoor and pool-oriented Apple Watch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Used-buying verdict: Historically significant, but not a realistic long-term purchase in 2026. It has no current watchOS support.

See Apple’s Series 2 specifications and launch information.

4. Apple Watch Series 3, 2017

Series 3 retained the older 38mm and 42mm case design and used Apple’s S3 processor. It was sold in GPS and GPS + Cellular versions, making it the first Apple Watch that could make calls, send messages, and use data away from the iPhone when paired with a supported carrier plan.

Apple rated Series 3 for up to 18 hours of battery life, but its limited storage—8GB on GPS models and 16GB on cellular models—became a serious limitation as watchOS grew.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2026 software position: It stopped at watchOS 8.8.1. Its age, storage constraints, and likely battery wear make it a poor bargain even when inexpensive.

More information is available in Apple’s Series 3 specifications and cellular launch announcement.

5. Apple Watch Series 4, 2018

Series 4 was the first major redesign. Apple moved to 40mm and 44mm cases, increased the display by more than 30% compared with Series 3, and introduced the S4 chip. It also added an electrical heart sensor, the ECG app, and Fall Detection.

That combination changed Apple Watch from mainly a notification and activity accessory into a more serious health and safety device. Apple rated its battery at up to 18 hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2026 software position: It stopped at watchOS 10.6.1. ECG availability depends on region, software, and regulatory approval; Apple says the ECG app is intended for people aged 22 and older and is not a substitute for clinical diagnosis.

Read Apple’s Series 4 specifications and Series 4 launch announcement.

6. Apple Watch Series 5, 2019

Series 5 introduced the Always-On Retina display, so the time and complications could remain visible without raising the wrist. It also added a built-in compass and increased storage to 32GB. The model retained the 40mm and 44mm case sizes, ECG capability, and an approximately 18-hour battery rating.

Used-buying verdict: The Always-On display remains useful, but Series 5 is no longer supported by current major watchOS releases. It is only worth considering at a very low price with a healthy battery and modest expectations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See Apple’s Series 5 specifications and launch announcement.

7. Apple Watch Series 6, 2020

Series 6 added a Blood Oxygen sensor and app, a faster S6 chip, and a next-generation always-on altimeter. It retained 40mm and 44mm cases, ECG, the Always-On display, and an 18-hour battery rating.

You can also view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app* and be notified of possible sleep apnea.*
  • KNOW YOUR SLEEP SCORE—With advanced sleep tracking, Series 11 gives you a daily sleep score. It’s an easy way to help measure and understand the quality of your sleep, so you can make it more restorative.
  • GET HYPERTENSION NOTIFICATIONS—Did you know that Series 11 can spot signs of chronic high blood pressure? By analyzing how your blood vessels respond to beats of the heart, it can notify you of possible hypertension.*
  • SAFETY FEATURES—A smartwatch that puts your safety first. Series 11 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, automatically help connect you with emergency services, and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
  • A POWERFUL FITNESS TRACKER—With advanced metrics and motivating features like Pacer, Heart Rate Zones, training load, and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone*—Series 11 is made to help everyone stay active, from runners and hikers to strength-training enthusiasts.

2026 software position: Series 6 is the oldest model compatible with stable watchOS 26, but Apple’s watchOS 27 preview list excludes it. That makes it usable but a weak long-term purchase unless the price is substantially below newer models.

Blood Oxygen availability is especially complicated in the U.S. and other regions. Some U.S. watches purchased on or after January 18, 2024 with part numbers ending in LW/A perform Blood Oxygen analysis on the paired iPhone, while other units and countries can differ. Confirm the exact watch rather than trusting a generic listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Apple Watch SE, 1st generation, 2020

The first SE combined selected Series 6-era features with the S5 chip and a lower price. It included GPS, fall detection, a compass, and an optical heart sensor, but omitted the Always-On display, ECG, and Blood Oxygen sensor. It used 40mm and 44mm aluminum cases and was rated for approximately 18 hours.

Used-buying verdict: It was a reasonable budget watch when new, but its watchOS 10.6.1 ceiling makes it difficult to recommend in 2026.

See Apple’s first-generation SE specifications.

9. Apple Watch Series 7, 2021

Series 7 changed the standard case sizes to 41mm and 45mm, reduced the borders, and provided nearly 20% more display area than Series 6. It introduced a QWERTY keyboard, IP6X dust resistance, and 33% faster charging while retaining the Always-On display, ECG, and approximately 18-hour battery rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Series 7 also preserved compatibility with previously released Apple Watch bands under Apple’s size conventions.

2026 software position: Compatible with watchOS 26 but not listed for watchOS 27. It can still be a good inexpensive everyday watch, but its remaining support and battery condition should be reflected in the price.

See Apple’s Series 7 specifications and launch announcement.

10. Apple Watch Series 8, 2022

Series 8 looked much like Series 7 but added wrist-temperature sensing, retrospective ovulation estimates, and Crash Detection. It retained 41mm and 45mm cases, the Always-On display, ECG, Blood Oxygen hardware, IP6X dust resistance, and an 18-hour battery rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The main reason to choose Series 8 over Series 7 is its newer sensors and safety features, not a dramatic visual redesign.

2026 software position: Compatible with watchOS 26 but excluded from the watchOS 27 preview list. It remains usable, but Series 9 is the more defensible used standard-size purchase when the price difference is reasonable.

See Apple’s Series 8 specifications and Series 8 announcement.

11. Apple Watch SE, 2nd generation, 2022

The second-generation SE used the S8 chip and added Crash Detection. It retained the value line’s main omissions: no ECG, no Blood Oxygen sensor, and no Always-On display. It came in 40mm and 44mm aluminum cases and was rated for approximately 18 hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2026 software position: Compatible with watchOS 26 but not listed for watchOS 27. It can make sense as a very inexpensive basic watch, but SE 3 is a considerably stronger current purchase.

12. Apple Watch Ultra, 2022

The first Ultra was a separate rugged category rather than merely a larger Series 8. It introduced a 49mm titanium case, flat sapphire crystal, a 2,000-nit display, a customizable Action button, dual-frequency GPS, a siren, 100-meter water resistance, depth sensing, and recreational diving support to 40 meters. Apple rated its normal-use battery at up to 36 hours.

It was sold as a cellular-capable model and added outdoor controls and durability features that were not available on the regular Series line.

2026 software position: Compatible with watchOS 26 but not listed for watchOS 27. Its battery and rugged construction can still be attractive used, but a used Ultra 2 is the better long-term target if prices are close.

13. Apple Watch Series 9, 2023

Series 9 introduced the S9 SiP, on-device Siri processing, the Double Tap gesture, Precision Finding for iPhone, a 2,000-nit display, and 64GB of storage. It retained 41mm and 45mm cases, ECG, the Always-On display, and an 18-hour normal-use battery rating.

Used-buying verdict: Series 9 is the oldest standard-size model listed for watchOS 27, making it the key used cutoff for buyers who want a current design and better software longevity without paying Series 11 pricing.

Sources: Apple’s Series 9 specifications and launch announcement.

14. Apple Watch Ultra 2, 2023

Ultra 2 upgraded the original Ultra with the S9 SiP, on-device Siri, Double Tap, a 3,000-nit display, and 64GB of storage. It retained the 49mm titanium case, sapphire crystal, Action button, dual-frequency GPS, 100-meter water resistance, 40-meter recreational-diving support, and a 36-hour battery rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Used-buying verdict: It is one of the strongest used Apple Watch choices in 2026 because it is listed for watchOS 27 and offers most of the Ultra experience. Check regional Blood Oxygen availability on the specific unit.

See Apple’s Ultra 2 specifications.

15. Apple Watch Series 10, 2024

Series 10 introduced a thinner 9.7mm case, 42mm and 46mm sizes, a larger display, titanium options in place of stainless steel in the regular Series line, a depth gauge to 6 meters, and water-temperature sensing. Apple described the active display area as up to 30% larger than Series 4–6 and up to 9% larger than Series 7–9.

  • INNOVATIVE SAFETY FEATURES — Fall Detection and Crash Detection can connect you with emergency services in the event of a hard fall or a severe car crash. And Emergency SOS lets you call for help with the press of a button.

It also introduced sleep apnea notifications on compatible hardware and software. The standard model retained an approximately 18-hour battery rating.

Used-buying verdict: Series 10 is a strong alternative to Series 11 when discounted. It has the newer 42mm/46mm design and is listed for watchOS 27, but Series 11 adds longer battery life, 5G, a more scratch-resistant Ion-X display, and hypertension notifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See Apple’s Series 10 specifications and launch announcement.

16. Apple Watch Series 11, 2025

Series 11 uses the S10 chip and comes in 42mm and 46mm aluminum or titanium cases. Its major additions are up to 24 hours of battery life, 5G cellular capability, sleep score, hypertension notifications, and an Ion-X display Apple describes as twice as scratch-resistant as the previous generation. It retains ECG, sleep apnea notifications, temperature sensing, fast charging, and 50-meter water resistance.

Best use: It is the best all-rounder for buyers who want the broadest mainstream health and fitness feature set without the size and cost of Ultra 3.

Limitation: Hypertension notifications identify possible signs of chronic high blood pressure over time; they do not measure blood pressure directly or diagnose hypertension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See the Series 11 technical specifications and launch announcement.

17. Apple Watch SE, 3rd generation, 2025

SE 3 is a much more substantial upgrade than the first two SE models. It uses the S10 chip and adds an Always-On display, fast charging, wrist-temperature sensing, sleep score, retrospective ovulation estimates, sleep apnea notifications, 5G cellular, Double Tap, wrist flick, on-device Siri, and media playback through the speaker.

It still omits ECG and hypertension notifications, and it does not include the flagship models’ Blood Oxygen sensor. Apple rates it for up to 18 hours of normal use, up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode, approximately 80% charge in 45 minutes, and up to eight hours of normal use after a 15-minute charge.

Best use: SE 3 is the best value for users who want a current watch, Always-On display, sleep and workout tracking, safety features, and optional cellular service but do not need ECG or premium outdoor hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See Apple’s SE 3 specifications and SE 3 announcement.

18. Apple Watch Ultra 3, 2025

Ultra 3 retains the 49mm Grade 5 titanium case but adds satellite connectivity for supported Emergency SOS, Messages, and Find My functions; 5G cellular; up to 42 hours of normal-use battery life; up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode; and a 3,000-nit display. It supports 100-meter water resistance and recreational scuba diving to 40 meters, and includes dual-frequency GPS, an Action button, and a siren.

Best use: Ultra 3 is for hikers, endurance athletes, travelers, divers, and people who value battery endurance and off-grid safety. It is not simply a Series 11 with a larger screen.

Trade-off: It is heavier, larger, more expensive, and cellular-only. Satellite functions require supported regions, suitable conditions, and an unobstructed view of the sky; they do not turn the watch into a general satellite internet device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See Apple’s Ultra 3 specifications and launch announcement.

Do not treat the numbers as directly comparable laboratory measurements without also comparing Apple’s test assumptions.

Which Apple Watch should you buy?

Choose Apple Watch SE 3 for value

SE 3 is the logical choice when price matters most but you still want current hardware and software support. It covers workouts, sleep tracking, temperature-based wellness features, sleep score, sleep apnea notifications, safety functions, Always-On time display, fast charging, and optional cellular service.

The compromises are clear: no ECG, no Blood Oxygen sensor, no hypertension notifications, a 1,000-nit display, aluminum-only construction, and no Ultra-level GPS, diving, or satellite features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Apple Watch Series 11 for most people

Series 11 is the mainstream recommendation when the watch will be used for daily health tracking, workouts, notifications, communication, and safety. It adds ECG and hypertension notifications over the SE 3, has a brighter display, offers aluminum or titanium, and has a 24-hour battery rating.

It is the better fit than Ultra 3 for users who want a smaller, lighter everyday watch and do not need satellite connectivity, dual-frequency GPS, 100-meter water resistance, or recreational diving features.

Choose Apple Watch Ultra 3 for outdoor endurance and diving

Ultra 3 earns its price through hardware and endurance rather than dramatically better ordinary health tracking. Choose it for long hikes, endurance races, travel away from reliable cellular coverage, bright outdoor conditions, recreational diving, rugged use, and fewer overnight charging interruptions.

A 49mm case, greater weight, cellular-only connectivity, and $799 starting price make it unnecessary for many users whose needs are limited to notifications, sleep, workouts, and health metrics.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Series 9 or Ultra 2 as a used alternative

Series 9 is the most important used standard-size cutoff because it is listed for watchOS 27 and includes the S9 processor, Double Tap, on-device Siri, 2,000-nit display, and 64GB storage. Ultra 2 is the equivalent used choice for buyers who want the rugged Ultra design and are willing to accept its larger size.

Series 10 is also attractive if its discount is meaningful. SE 3 can be a good used purchase too, but because it is still current, compare its used price against a new unit and its warranty before buying.

Rank #4
Apple Watch Series 9 [GPS, 45mm] - Starlight Aluminum Case with Starlight Sport Band, S/M (Renewed)
  • S9 SiP Processor: Advanced processor improves overall performance and enables on-device Siri functionality.

For runners

Series 11 is the better general running choice for most people because it is lighter and less expensive than Ultra 3 while retaining current health and fitness features. Ultra 3 becomes more compelling for ultramarathons, multi-day adventures, harsh conditions, or runners who strongly value battery life and dual-frequency GPS.

For hikers and travelers

Ultra 3 is the strongest choice when battery endurance, bright-screen visibility, ruggedness, precision GPS, and satellite Emergency SOS, Messages, or Find My functions matter. Satellite availability depends on country, service, software, and sky visibility, so it should not be treated as a substitute for carrying all other safety equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For recreational divers

Ultra 3 is the current model designed for the deepest recreational-diving use, with 100-meter water resistance and support to 40 meters. Series 11 has a depth gauge to 6 meters for shallower activities. Apple Watch water resistance is not permanent, and no Apple Watch should automatically be treated as a replacement for a dedicated dive computer in every diving environment.

For children through Apple Watch For Your Kids

Apple Watch For Your Kids requires a cellular-capable watch and supported carrier and country. A cellular SE 3 is the value-oriented option; a cellular Series 11 adds more health features. Ultra 3 can participate where supported, but its size and price generally make it an unusual choice for a child.

For a small wrist

SE 3 is available in the smallest current case size, 40mm. Series 11 starts at 42mm, while Ultra 3 is 49mm and substantially larger. Case dimensions are only part of comfort: also consider thickness, weight, band adjustment, and whether the watch will be worn during sleep.

For ECG

Choose Series 11 or Ultra 3 among the current models. Used buyers can look at Series 4 and later flagship Series models, Series 5 through Series 10, and Ultra or Ultra 2. SE models do not include ECG. Regional approval, age requirements, software, and the paired iPhone still apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For maximum battery life

Ultra 3 has Apple’s highest current normal-use rating at up to 42 hours, compared with up to 24 hours for Series 11 and up to 18 hours for SE 3. Actual endurance depends heavily on cellular use, GPS, workouts, signal strength, temperature, and battery health.

Health and safety features by generation

The following table identifies when the underlying hardware family first appeared. A feature may still require a particular watchOS version, paired iPhone, country, language, age, or regulatory approval.

Feature First relevant generation Important qualification
Fall Detection Series 4 Available on later compatible models, including SE models with the required hardware and software
ECG Series 4 Not available on SE; regional approval and age requirements apply; not a diagnosis
Always-On display Series 5 Absent from SE 1 and SE 2; added to SE 3
Fast charging Series 7-era hardware Also available on newer compatible models, including SE 3
Blood Oxygen sensor Series 6 Not included in SE; app and analysis vary by region, unit, purchase date, and U.S. restrictions
Cellular connectivity Series 3 Requires a cellular model, supported carrier, and appropriate plan
Crash Detection Series 8, SE 2, and Ultra Requires supported hardware and software; emergency services and regional conditions apply
Wrist-temperature sensing Series 8 and later, all Ultra models, SE 3 Used for wellness and cycle insights; not a general-purpose fever thermometer
Sleep apnea notifications Series 9, Ultra 2, Series 10-era models, Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3 Uses breathing-related motion patterns to identify possible signs; it does not diagnose sleep apnea
Hypertension notifications Series 11 and Ultra 3 Screening notifications for possible signs over time, not a blood-pressure measurement
Depth gauge Original Ultra and Series 10 Series 10 supports depths to 6m; Ultra models support recreational diving to 40m
Satellite connectivity Ultra 3 For supported Emergency SOS, Messages, and Find My functions with regional and sky-visibility limitations

ECG

ECG is available on Series 4 and later flagship Series models and on Ultra models, but not on SE. Apple describes the feature as similar to a single-lead ECG and says it is intended for users aged 22 and older. It requires supported hardware, software, and regional availability and should not replace medical evaluation.

Blood Oxygen

Blood Oxygen hardware began with Series 6 and is present on later flagship Series and Ultra models, but not SE models. Whether the app and analysis work depends on the country, exact unit, purchase date, part-number suffix, and software. In the U.S., Apple has changed how some affected watches process and display Blood Oxygen data. Treat the feature as a wellness measurement, not a medical diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sleep apnea notifications

Supported watches analyze breathing-related motion patterns during sleep and can notify the wearer about possible signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea. They do not diagnose the condition. Apple’s requirements include compatible hardware, software, setup, age and health conditions, and regional availability.

Temperature sensing

Temperature sensing supports wellness insights, cycle tracking, and retrospective ovulation estimates. It measures wrist-temperature trends during sleep; it is not a clinical thermometer and should not be used as a general-purpose fever measurement.

Hypertension notifications

Series 11 and Ultra 3 can notify users about possible signs of chronic high blood pressure over time using watch sensor data. They do not directly measure blood pressure. Anyone receiving a notification should follow appropriate medical guidance rather than treating the alert as a diagnosis.

watchOS compatibility and used-buying longevity

Current stable software: watchOS 26

At this article’s cutoff, watchOS 26 is the current stable major release. Apple lists compatibility with Series 6 and later, SE 2 and later, and all Apple Watch Ultra models. Updating requires an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE 3rd generation or later, running iOS 26. Apple’s update page lists releases through watchOS 26.5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

watchOS 27: previewed, not yet the current stable release

Apple previewed watchOS 27 at WWDC26 on June 8, 2026. At the August 9 cutoff it should be treated as an upcoming or beta release, not the current public operating system. Apple’s preview compatibility list includes:

  • Apple Watch SE 3
  • Apple Watch Series 9
  • Apple Watch Series 10
  • Apple Watch Series 11
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2
  • Apple Watch Ultra 3

The preview requires an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE 2nd generation or later, running iOS 27. Compatibility lists can change before final release, so consult Apple’s watchOS page for the latest status.

Do not infer a watch’s remaining useful life solely from its model year. Battery health, the buyer’s iPhone, regional features, repair history, and the price are equally important.

Used Apple Watch buying checklist

  1. Identify the exact generation and size. Do not rely on a seller’s title or a generic photo. Nike and Hermès branding does not identify a separate generation.
  2. Confirm GPS versus GPS + Cellular. Cellular capability is a hardware and carrier issue, not just a software setting.
  3. Check the model number and region. In the iPhone’s Watch app, go to My Watch → General → About → Model Number. Tap the displayed part number to reveal the five-digit A-number model identifier. Use Apple’s identification page to match it.
  4. Check battery health. On the watch, open Settings → Battery → Battery Health. A worn battery can make an apparently cheap older watch poor value, especially for sleep tracking or GPS workouts.
  5. Make sure Activation Lock is removed. The seller should erase the watch and remove it from their Apple Account. If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, do not buy it unless the owner can remove the lock.
  6. Confirm it pairs with your iPhone. Check the required iPhone model and iOS version before paying. A watch can be functional but unusable with an incompatible phone.
  7. Check cellular compatibility. For a cellular model, confirm that the carrier supports Apple Watch, the model’s regional bands are compatible, and the seller has removed any old cellular plan.
  8. Verify health features in your country. ECG, Blood Oxygen, sleep apnea notifications, hypertension notifications, emergency calling, satellite services, and cellular bands can vary by region and unit.
  9. Test the hardware. Inspect the display and crystal, test the Digital Crown and side button, listen to the speaker, test the microphone, check the sensors, and confirm that the magnetic charger works.
  10. Check organizational management. A watch managed by a company, school, or other organization may remain restricted even after ordinary erasure.
  11. Confirm the charger is suitable. Make sure the seller includes a compatible Apple Watch magnetic charging cable or price in a replacement.
  12. Price in the software ceiling. Series 3 and older are generally poor buys; Series 6 through Series 8, SE 2, and the original Ultra need a meaningful discount because they are not on the watchOS 27 preview list.

Important limitations and compatibility details

GPS versus GPS + Cellular

GPS models can record workouts and use many functions away from the iPhone, but calls, messages, and internet-dependent services generally require the paired iPhone or Wi-Fi. GPS + Cellular models can use supported cellular services away from the iPhone after activation with a compatible carrier plan.

Apple Watch For Your Kids requires cellular hardware and supported carrier and country availability. Cellular roaming, emergency calling, Family Setup, and carrier requirements vary.

5G on Apple Watch

Series 11, SE 3, and Ultra 3 support 5G cellular capability, but this does not mean they behave like standalone iPhones. Apple Watch uses a low-power cellular implementation and still requires compatible carrier service, plan support, and regional compatibility.

Water resistance is not waterproofing

Apple’s 50-meter models are intended for shallow-water activities such as swimming. Ultra models are rated to 100 meters and support recreational scuba diving to 40 meters with suitable software. Water resistance can diminish with age, impact, chemical exposure, and ordinary wear. Apple Watch should never be described as permanently waterproof.

High-speed water sports, diving, swimming, and accidental submersion place different demands on a case. Consult Apple’s water-resistance guidance for prohibited or unsuitable activities.

Durability is more than one specification

Series 7 and later standard models have an IP6X dust-resistance rating. Ultra models add titanium, sapphire crystal, 100-meter water resistance, and MIL-STD-810H testing. Those specifications improve resistance in particular conditions but do not make a watch immune to scratches, impact, water damage, or battery wear.

Band compatibility

Series 7 changed the standard cases to 41mm and 45mm while preserving compatibility with previously released Apple Watch bands under Apple’s size families. Ultra uses the large-case band family, but buyers should still verify the particular band and watch combination rather than assume that every band fits every model.

Frequently asked questions

What is the newest Apple Watch?

The newest current models at the August 9, 2026 cutoff are Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 3. Series 11 is the mainstream model, SE 3 is the value model, and Ultra 3 is the adventure model.

What is the best Apple Watch in 2026?

There is no single best model for every user. SE 3 is the value choice, Series 11 is the best all-rounder for most people, and Ultra 3 is the best fit for outdoor endurance, diving, satellite connectivity, and maximum battery life.

Is Apple Watch Series 11 worth it over SE 3?

Choose Series 11 if you need ECG, hypertension notifications, a brighter display, titanium options, or the longer 24-hour battery rating. Choose SE 3 if those features are not important; it still has an Always-On display, S10, temperature sensing, sleep apnea notifications, fast charging, and optional 5G cellular.

Is Ultra 3 worth it over Series 11?

Ultra 3 is worth considering for its 49mm titanium case, 42-hour battery rating, 3,000-nit display, dual-frequency GPS, 100-meter water resistance, diving support, Action button, and satellite functions. For ordinary notifications, sleep tracking, workouts, and health features, Series 11 is usually the more practical and less expensive choice.

Which Apple Watches support watchOS 27?

At the preview stage, Apple lists SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, and Ultra 3. Because watchOS 27 was upcoming at the research cutoff, check Apple’s compatibility page again before installing or purchasing.

What is the oldest Apple Watch that supports watchOS 26?

Apple Watch Series 6 is the oldest standard model on the watchOS 26 compatibility list. SE 2 and all Apple Watch Ultra models are also compatible with watchOS 26.

Is Series 8 still supported?

Series 8 supports stable watchOS 26 at the cutoff, but Apple’s watchOS 27 preview list excludes it. It can be a reasonable low-priced used watch with a healthy battery, but Series 9 or Series 10 is safer for longer software support.

Is Series 9 still worth buying?

Yes, if it is meaningfully cheaper than Series 11 and passes the battery, Activation Lock, pairing, and hardware checks. It is the oldest standard-size model listed for watchOS 27 and includes ECG, Always-On display, S9 processing, Double Tap, on-device Siri, and 64GB storage.

Which Apple Watch has ECG?

ECG is available on Series 4 and later flagship Series models and on Ultra models. It is not available on any SE model. Regional approval, age, software, and paired-iPhone requirements apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Apple Watch has Blood Oxygen?

Blood Oxygen hardware begins with Series 6 and continues on later flagship Series and Ultra models, but not SE. The app and processing behavior can differ by country, purchase date, model number, and U.S. regulatory restrictions, so verify the exact unit.

Which Apple Watch has sleep apnea notifications?

Supported hardware includes Series 9, Ultra 2, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3. The feature analyzes breathing-related motion patterns and can notify the user about possible signs; it is not a diagnosis and requires compatible software and regional availability.

Can Apple Watch work without an iPhone?

A cellular Apple Watch can make calls, send messages, and use supported data services away from the iPhone after setup with a compatible carrier plan. GPS models are more dependent on the iPhone or Wi-Fi. Every Apple Watch requires an iPhone for initial pairing and management, and the required iPhone model varies by watchOS version.

Are old Apple Watch bands compatible?

Series 7 retained compatibility with previously released standard Apple Watch bands under Apple’s small and large case-size families. Ultra bands use the large-case family. Always verify the specific band’s stated compatibility, especially when mixing standard and Ultra models.

How do I identify my Apple Watch?

Open the Watch app on the iPhone, choose My Watch → General → About → Model Number, then tap the part number to reveal the five-digit A-number identifier. Match that identifier with Apple’s official identification guide.

Is the original Apple Watch still usable?

It may power on and perform limited historical functions, but it has no current watchOS support and is heavily dependent on old iPhone and app compatibility. Treat it as a collectible or historical device, not as a practical 2026 smartwatch.

Can Ultra 3 replace a dive computer?

Ultra 3 supports recreational diving to 40 meters and includes depth and water-related features, but whether it is suitable for a particular dive depends on the activity, software, training, and safety requirements. Do not assume that an Apple Watch replaces every function or redundancy expected from a dedicated dive computer.

Is Apple Watch’s blood-pressure feature a blood-pressure monitor?

No. Series 11 and Ultra 3 provide hypertension notifications based on signs detected over time; they do not directly measure blood pressure. The feature is a screening aid, not a clinical blood-pressure cuff or diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Apple Watch for most people in 2026?

Apple Watch Series 11 is the best all-round choice for most people because it combines the mainstream case sizes with ECG, hypertension notifications, sleep features, a brighter display, and a 24-hour battery rating. SE 3 is better for value, while Ultra 3 is better for outdoor endurance and diving.

Which Apple Watch is the best used purchase?

Start with Series 9, Series 10, or Ultra 2, provided the battery is healthy, Activation Lock is removed, and the watch pairs with your iPhone. These models are listed for watchOS 27 at the August 2026 preview cutoff.

Is Apple Watch Series 8 obsolete?

No, Series 8 remains compatible with stable watchOS 26 at the cutoff. However, it is not listed for watchOS 27, so buy it only at a substantial discount and with realistic expectations about future software support.

What is the difference between SE 3 and Series 11?

SE 3 has an Always-On display, S10, temperature sensing, sleep apnea notifications, fast charging, and optional cellular service, but lacks ECG, Blood Oxygen hardware, and hypertension notifications. Series 11 adds those higher-end health capabilities, a brighter display, titanium options, and a longer battery rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Apple Watch have the same health features worldwide?

No. ECG, Blood Oxygen, sleep apnea notifications, hypertension notifications, emergency calling, satellite services, and cellular bands can vary by country, language, regulatory approval, paired iPhone, software, age, and exact hardware unit.

Is Apple Watch Ultra 3 waterproof?

No Apple Watch should be described as permanently waterproof. Ultra 3 is rated for 100-meter water resistance and recreational scuba diving to 40 meters, but water resistance can diminish over time and different water activities have different risks.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line

Buy the Apple Watch SE 3 if you want the lowest-cost current model and can live without ECG and hypertension notifications. Buy the Apple Watch Series 11 if you want the best everyday balance of health features, size, price, and battery life. Buy the Apple Watch Ultra 3 only when its larger rugged case, 42-hour battery rating, advanced GPS, diving features, or satellite connectivity solve a real need.

For used buyers, prioritize Series 9, Series 10, Ultra 2, or SE 3, then verify battery health, Activation Lock, model number, carrier compatibility, regional features, and iPhone pairing before paying. A low sticker price does not compensate for an obsolete software ceiling or a worn battery.
