It is most useful with a touchscreen, stylus, or graphics tablet, although you can also write with a mouse.
There is an important version limitation: the standalone Math Input Panel is included primarily with Windows 10 version 2004 and earlier. Microsoft removed the application from later Windows 10 releases, while retaining the underlying Math Recognizer components. If Windows cannot find mip, the app may simply not exist on that installation.
Check whether Math Input Panel is installed
Try these methods in order:
- Select Start, type
math, and look for Math Input Panel. - Open Start > Windows Accessories > Math Input Panel.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
mip, and press Enter.
If the search result is missing and the Run command produces “Windows cannot find ‘mip’,” you are probably using a Windows 10 release in which Microsoft removed the standalone interface. Installing Math Recognizer on such a release does not necessarily bring the old application back.
Write and recognize an expression
- Open Math Input Panel.
- Write an expression in the area labeled Write math here. Use a stylus or finger for the best results. A mouse works, but usually produces less consistent handwriting.
- Pause briefly after writing. The recognized expression appears in the preview area above the writing surface.
- Check the preview carefully. Recognition is not the same as calculation: the panel converts handwriting into mathematical notation, but it is not a general-purpose equation solver.
- When the expression is correct, select Insert.
For example, you might write x^2 + 3x = 10, a fraction, a square root, or an integral. Write symbols with enough separation that the recognizer can distinguish them. A decimal point placed too close to a number, for example, can be interpreted incorrectly.

Correct a character the panel misread
Use the controls beside the writing area when the preview is wrong:
| Control | Use it to |
|---|---|
| Write | Return to normal handwriting input. |
| Erase | Remove selected ink from the writing area. |
| Select and Correct | Select a character or part of the expression and choose an alternative interpretation. |
| Undo | Reverse the last action. |
| Redo | Restore an action that you undid. |
| Clear | Erase the complete writing area and start again. |
To fix one symbol, choose Select and Correct, mark the misread character, and select the correct option from the alternatives. This is normally faster than rewriting a long expression.
Insert the expression into Word or another application
Math Input Panel is designed to send the recognized expression to an active, compatible application.
- Open the destination document, such as a Word document, and place the insertion point where the equation should appear.
- Open Math Input Panel and write the expression.
- Review and correct the recognition.
- Select Insert.
If the expression does not appear automatically, Math Input Panel may have placed it on the clipboard. Switch to the destination application and press Ctrl+V.

If the writing area clears after insertion, that is controlled by an option in the panel. It is convenient when entering several separate equations, but inconvenient if you need to make repeated corrections.
Reuse an earlier expression
Math Input Panel keeps previously entered expressions in its history. Select History, choose an earlier expression, make any needed changes, and select Insert to send it to the active application again.
Change the panel’s options
Select Options to adjust the interface. The available settings include:
- Clear writing area after insertion — removes the current handwriting after you insert it.
- Side buttons on Left side of writing area — moves the correction controls.
- Side buttons on Right side of writing area — places the controls on the other side.
- Show on-screen keyboard buttons — adds Del and Enter buttons.
- Show grid — displays a writing guide that can help keep symbols aligned.
Install Math Recognizer when it is missing
On Windows 10 versions that still support the feature, Math Recognizer can be installed as an optional capability:

- Open Settings > Apps > Optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Find Math Recognizer.
- Select it, choose Install, and restart or reopen the target application if necessary.
Microsoft identifies the Feature on Demand capability as:

Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name MathRecognizer~~~~0.0.1.0These commands install the recognition component, not necessarily the old standalone Math Input Panel application. On later Windows 10 releases, Microsoft removed that application and kept the control and recognition engine for supported handwriting-enabled programs.
Fix “source files could not be found”
If Add-WindowsCapability fails with a message that source files could not be found, Windows cannot obtain the Feature on Demand files. Common causes include Windows Update being blocked, a work or school device being restricted by policy, or an organization using a repair source that does not contain Math Recognizer.

On a managed PC, an administrator may need to configure the correct Feature on Demand source or permit Windows to contact Windows Update. Repeating the command without fixing the source usually produces the same error.

First check your Windows version by pressing Windows key + R, entering winver, and pressing Enter. The standalone app is expected mainly on version 2004 and earlier. Most ordinary Windows 10 installations are newer, such as version 22H2, so the absence of mip is not necessarily a damaged installation.
On a newer release, use the equation tools built into the application where you need the notation. In Word, for example, select Insert > Equation and create the equation with Word’s equation editor. If handwriting recognition is essential, use a supported application that exposes Windows’ Math Recognizer components rather than assuming that installing the optional feature will restore Math Input Panel.
Windows 10 reached general end of support on October 14, 2025. Enterprise LTSC installations and devices covered by applicable Extended Security Updates can follow different servicing arrangements, but the Math Input Panel version distinction remains the same.

FAQ
Does Math Input Panel solve equations?
No. It recognizes handwritten mathematical notation and inserts the resulting expression into another application. It does not generally calculate or solve the equation for you.
Why does Windows 10 say it cannot find mip?
The standalone Math Input Panel application was removed from later Windows 10 releases. The command works mainly on Windows 10 version 2004 and earlier, where the app is still included.
Will installing Math Recognizer restore Math Input Panel?
Not necessarily. Math Recognizer supplies the recognition control and engine, but Microsoft removed the standalone application from later releases. Installing the optional feature may not restore the old Math Input Panel window.
Can I use Math Input Panel without a touchscreen?
Yes. You can write with a mouse or another pointing device, although a stylus, digitizer, or touchscreen generally gives better recognition.

On a Windows 10 installation that still includes it, open Math Input Panel with mip, write in Write math here, correct any misread symbols, and select Insert or paste with Ctrl+V. If the command and Start-menu entry are missing, check the Windows version before troubleshooting: later releases removed the standalone app, and Math Recognizer alone does not reliably bring it back.
