“End of life” is not one switch that Apple flips for an iPhone. Apple tracks hardware service separately from iOS compatibility, security updates, and AppleCare coverage. As a result, an iPhone can be too old for the newest iOS while still receiving security fixes, or it can be classed as vintage while remaining compatible with the current major release.
To judge a specific iPhone, check three things: its exact model and capacity, the newest iOS it can install, and whether Apple still offers parts or repairs in your region.
What Apple means by vintage and obsolete
Apple’s hardware-service classifications are based on when it stopped distributing a product, not simply on the phone’s launch date:
| Status | Apple’s definition | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Vintage | Apple stopped distributing the product more than five but less than seven years ago. | Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider may still offer repairs, but parts and service are subject to availability. |
| Obsolete | Apple stopped distributing the product more than seven years ago. | Apple discontinues hardware service, and authorized providers cannot order parts through Apple. |
These labels do not directly determine iOS support. A vintage iPhone may still run the latest iOS, while an older non-vintage model may already be excluded from that release. Apple also states that its five-to-seven-year service window is not an unconditional repair guarantee: availability depends on parts, local law, location, and the particular repair.

Which iPhones currently support iOS 26?
Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility list includes the iPhone 11 family and newer models, along with the second- and third-generation iPhone SE. The practical cutoff is:
- iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max
- All listed iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 models
- iPhone 16e
- iPhone SE (2nd generation) and iPhone SE (3rd generation)
- iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17e, and iPhone Air
Model support is not the same as feature parity. Some iOS features require a newer processor, more memory, or specific hardware, so an iPhone that can install iOS 26 may not support every feature in the release.
Older iPhones can still receive security updates
Apple sometimes publishes security updates for older iOS branches after a device stops receiving the latest major release. Apple’s security-releases page currently lists the following branches and device groups:
| Software branch | Listed iPhone models |
|---|---|
| iOS 26.5 and 26.5.1 | iPhone 11 through iPhone 16e, and iPhone 17 models or iPhone Air as applicable to the release |
| iOS 18.7.9 | iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR |
| iOS 16.7.16 | iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X |
| iOS 15.8.8 | iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone SE (1st generation) |
| iOS 12.5.8 | iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus |
The release numbers and availability change over time, so treat this table as a snapshot rather than a permanent support promise. An older-branch update fixes selected security issues; it does not add the current iOS feature set or make the phone compatible with the latest major release.

Current Apple hardware classifications for iPhone
Apple’s worldwide vintage list currently includes:
- iPhone 6s models with 16GB, 64GB, or 128GB storage
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, including iPhone 7 (PRODUCT)RED
- iPhone 8 with 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB storage
- iPhone 8 Plus with 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB storage
- iPhone X
- iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max
- iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
The worldwide obsolete list includes the original iPhone; iPhone 3G and 3GS variants; iPhone 4 and 4S variants; iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s; iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus; 32GB versions of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus; the iPhone 8 (PRODUCT)RED; the iPhone 8 Plus (PRODUCT)RED; and the original iPhone SE.
Capacity and special-edition differences are important. Two phones sold under the same broad model name can have different entries on Apple’s list. Check the exact device rather than relying only on “iPhone 8” or “iPhone 6s.”
What vintage status means when your phone needs repair
A vintage label does not mean the phone has stopped working or that every repair is unavailable. Apple or an authorized provider may still be able to service it, but a required battery, display, camera, or other component may no longer be stocked. One repair can therefore be available while another is declined.

For an obsolete iPhone, Apple has ended its official hardware-service program. Authorized providers cannot order obsolete-product parts from Apple. An independent repair shop may still repair the device using remaining, refurbished, or salvaged parts, but that work is outside Apple’s official service network and may not be practical for every fault.
How to check your iPhone’s actual support position
1. Identify the exact model
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Read Model Name and the installed iOS version.
- Tap the value beside Model to switch between the part number and the model number.
The exact model number is useful when storage or a special edition changes Apple’s classification. If the phone will not boot, Apple documents finding the model number on the back, inside the SIM-tray opening, or inside the Lightning or USB-C connector, depending on the model.
2. Check for the newest available iOS
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Read the installed version and the update offered by the phone.
- If iOS 26 is not offered, check Apple’s compatibility list before troubleshooting the connection or storage.
The Software Update screen only offers releases compatible with that iPhone and its current software. A missing iOS 26 option is normally a compatibility limit, not evidence that the update server has failed.
3. Check repair and coverage information
- Open Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty.
- Tap the iPhone to view available AppleCare and coverage details.
- For service, use Apple’s iPhone repair page and enter the model and fault.
You can also sign in at mysupport.apple.com. Coverage does not override an obsolete classification, and an active warranty does not guarantee that every physical repair is available. Service options vary by country, provider, parts supply, and the condition of the phone.

Battery replacement is a separate question
Battery service does not follow exactly the same timetable as iOS updates. A phone can still be compatible with current iOS but lack Apple battery parts in a particular location. Conversely, an older or vintage phone may still be accepted for battery service.
Apple or an authorized provider normally inspects the iPhone before giving a service estimate. Out-of-warranty pricing varies by model and provider. Apple says service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer. Under applicable AppleCare terms, battery service is provided at no extra charge when maximum capacity falls below 80%.
Before paying for a battery in an old iPhone, compare the repair cost with the phone’s age, storage, app compatibility, cellular-network support, and expected remaining software life.
What happens when an iPhone reaches end of life?
Apple does not remotely disable a phone when it stops selling it, ends major iOS support, or marks it obsolete. The iPhone may continue to perform its existing functions for years. The practical problems appear gradually:

- New cellular, Wi-Fi, accessory, and service requirements may not be supported.
If the phone handles banking, work accounts, health information, or other sensitive data, security-update status matters more than whether it still turns on. For light use such as music playback, offline reading, or a spare emergency device, an unsupported iPhone may remain useful—provided its battery and network connectivity are adequate.

- Confirm the model and storage. This avoids applying the wrong vintage or obsolete entry.
- Check Software Update. Record the installed version and the newest version offered.
- Check Apple’s security-releases page. Determine whether the device is receiving a maintained older branch or no recent security fixes.
- Test essential apps. Check banking, authentication, messaging, navigation, and work apps—not just the App Store itself.
- Price the repair. Ask Apple, an authorized provider, and a reputable independent shop what parts and warranty they offer.
- Replace the phone when risk or cost outweighs its use. Lack of security updates, a failing battery, unsupported essential apps, or an expensive major repair are stronger replacement signals than the word “vintage” alone.
FAQ
Does vintage mean an iPhone no longer receives iOS updates?
No. Vintage is Apple’s hardware-service category for products it stopped distributing more than five but less than seven years ago. Software support is tracked separately. For example, an iPhone 11 Pro can be vintage while the iPhone 11 generation remains compatible with iOS 26.
Is an iPhone obsolete if it cannot install the latest iOS?
No. Apple may continue releasing security updates for older iOS branches after a model loses access to the newest major release. However, an older branch will not provide the latest features, and app compatibility will gradually decline.
Does Apple guarantee repairs for seven years?
No. Apple describes at least five years of service and parts availability after it stops distributing a product, with potential service for up to seven years. Availability depends on parts, local law, location, and the type of repair.
How can I check whether my exact iPhone is still supported?
Open Settings > General > About to identify the model, then check Settings > General > Software Update for the newest compatible iOS. Compare the exact model, storage, and edition with Apple’s vintage and obsolete list, and use Apple’s repair page to confirm service availability.
The Bottom Line
An iPhone’s end-of-life status has three separate parts: current iOS compatibility, ongoing security updates, and Apple hardware service. Use Settings > General > About to identify the exact model, Software Update to check its available iOS, and Apple’s repair tools to verify parts and service. Vintage does not automatically mean unusable, and obsolete does not remotely shut the phone down—but both are warnings to check security, app compatibility, battery health, and repair cost before relying on the device.
