Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFacebook bundles several different jobs into one account: family updates, private groups, events, messaging, public posts, and marketplace listings. Its alternatives usually specialize instead of copying that entire bundle.
For a Facebook-like experience built around private groups, MeWe is the closest fit. Mastodon is better for independently run communities and chronological public discussion. Bluesky focuses on public conversation and customizable feeds, while Pixelfed is the strongest option for photo-centered communities.
One important distinction: privacy controls are not the same as end-to-end encryption. None of these services should replace Signal or another purpose-built encrypted messenger for confidential conversations.
Quick comparison
| Platform | Best for | Privacy model | Community model | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MeWe | Private groups, family circles, and interest communities | Centralized service with privacy controls; MeWe says it does not sell or rent personal data | Open, Selective, and Private groups | You still depend on one company for hosting, moderation, and account access |
| Mastodon | Independent communities and chronological public discussion | Federated; each server has its own operator, rules, and privacy policy | Server-based communities connected through federation | Server choice matters, and direct messages are not end-to-end encrypted |
| Bluesky | Public discussion, topic feeds, and user-controlled moderation | Public-by-design network using the AT Protocol | Custom feeds, user lists, starter packs, and moderation services | It is primarily a public microblogging network, not a Facebook-style group platform |
| Pixelfed | Privacy-conscious photo and video sharing | Federated and ad-free, with audience controls that vary by server | Independent ActivityPub servers connected to other compatible services | Photo-first rather than a general-purpose social network |

MeWe says it does not sell, rent, or share personal data with third-party marketers and does not use facial-recognition technology. That does not mean it collects no information: account and technical data can include an email address or phone number, IP address, device information, and privacy preferences.
MeWe group visibility options
- Open Groups: searchable and open to members.
- Selective Groups: searchable, but an administrator must approve new members.
- Private Groups: hidden and invitation-only.
MeWe’s help documentation also uses the terms Open Groups and Private Groups in some workflows, so the labels can differ between the group-creation page and the mobile or web interface. For a private group, invitations are sent through Invite Your Friends rather than through a public link or QR code.
How to create a MeWe group
- On the web, open Groups and select New Group.
- In the mobile app, open Communities, tap +, and choose New Group.
- Select the desired visibility level during setup.
- Review account-wide controls under Settings > Privacy.
Best fit: families, clubs, alumni groups, hobby communities, and organizations that want a conventional Facebook-style layout with stronger privacy positioning.
Watch out: “Private” does not mean end-to-end encrypted. MeWe remains a centralized platform, so hosting, moderation, and account availability are controlled by the company.
2. Mastodon: best for independent, community-run social networking
Mastodon is free, open-source, and decentralized. Instead of one Facebook-sized service, it consists of independently operated servers—often called instances—that interoperate as part of a wider network. Each server sets its own rules, handles moderation, and publishes its own policies.
This structure is useful if you want to choose a community based on its topic, culture, or moderation approach. It also avoids a single algorithmically sorted home feed: Mastodon’s official service emphasizes chronological feeds and does not serve ads.
Rank #2
Mastodon post visibility
Mastodon currently provides four visibility choices:
- Public: visible on public timelines and the author’s profile.
- Quiet public: visible on the author’s profile and to followers, but excluded from public feeds, Explore features, and search results. This was previously labeled Unlisted.
- Followers: intended for approved followers.
- Private mention: a restricted post directed to selected accounts.
Useful Mastodon settings
- Use Preferences > Public profile > Edit profile to change profile details.
- Use Settings > Preferences > Posting Defaults to change the default visibility for new posts.
- Open Preferences > Invite people to generate invitation links when the server permits invitations.
- Account settings include password changes, active-session revocation, authorized-app revocation, and two-factor authentication.
Mastodon privacy traps
New posts default to Public unless you change the posting default. Visibility is also selected per post, and you cannot retroactively turn an already-public post into a private one.
Followers-only posts are not completely hidden from server operators. The operators of the sender’s and receiving servers may be able to view them. If you want followers-only posts to provide meaningful protection, disable automatic follower approval; otherwise, anyone can follow the account and potentially see older followers-only posts.
Private mentions are not encrypted direct messages. Mastodon explicitly distinguishes them from encrypted messaging apps such as Signal or Matrix, and database administrators may be able to access their text.
Best fit: people who value chronological feeds, open-source software, server-based communities, and the ability to select or operate their own social server.
3. Bluesky: best for public communities and customizable feeds
Bluesky uses the AT Protocol, which supports multiple services, personal data servers, developer applications, and moderation services. The official Bluesky app is designed primarily for public microblogging, so it is not a direct replacement for Facebook groups, family photo albums, or private community spaces.

Its advantage is control over discovery and moderation. Users can subscribe to custom feeds, follow user lists, join starter packs, and use moderation lists or additional labeling services rather than relying solely on one platform-wide recommendation system.
How Bluesky moderation works
Bluesky’s documented moderation architecture combines:
- Network-level takedowns.
- Labels supplied by moderation services.
- User controls such as mutes and blocks.
The official app includes its own moderation service and supports up to 19 additional user-selected labelers, for a documented maximum of 20 labelers.
Bluesky privacy limitations
- Posts, profiles, likes, follows, and blocks are public by design.
- Direct messages are unencrypted and may be accessed for Trust & Safety purposes.
- Blocks are currently public and enumerable.
- Deleting an account does not guarantee that copies held by other AT Protocol services or applications will disappear.
- Account portability and personal data servers are part of the protocol model, but users of the official app should not assume all account data is self-hosted.
Bluesky’s interface changes more quickly than a traditional centralized social network, and its technical documentation does not guarantee one stable set of menu labels for every web and mobile client. Verify the exact path in the version you use before publishing or following instructions such as Settings > Moderation.
Best fit: creators, journalists, public-interest communities, and users who want topic-specific feeds and layered moderation for public conversation.
4. Pixelfed: best for privacy-focused photo communities
Pixelfed is an open-source, federated photo-sharing platform built around ActivityPub. It is closer to a privacy-conscious alternative to Instagram than to a complete Facebook replacement. The service supports chronological feeds, albums, comments, direct messages, stories, and interaction with compatible ActivityPub services.

- Market to niche demographics;
- Search for data;
- Expand your wealth.
Pixelfed’s official feature list includes unlisted and follower-only posts, manual follower approval, mute and block controls, reporting, optional comment disabling, and the ability to limit direct messages to accounts you follow.
Pixelfed privacy and federation
Pixelfed servers are independently operated. As a result, available settings, registration rules, moderation policies, storage, and privacy controls can vary between instances. A path shown on one server—such as https://pixelfed.art/settings/privacy—should not automatically be treated as the universal path for every Pixelfed installation.

Federation can also introduce practical delays. A remote server may not have fetched a post, account, or reply yet, and conversations can appear incomplete until the relevant server retrieves the missing content.
Follower-only visibility is not end-to-end encrypted messaging. Pixelfed confirms that it supports direct messages but does not claim that those messages use end-to-end encryption.
Best fit: photographers, artists, families, and visual communities that want sharing and discovery without an ad-driven centralized feed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What these services do not replace well
None of the four platforms combines Facebook’s full feature set. MeWe comes closest for groups, but it is centralized. Mastodon provides community identity through servers, but it does not work like a conventional private-group directory. Bluesky is excellent for public topics and feeds, but not for confidential family updates. Pixelfed handles photos well, but it is not designed as a general-purpose community hub.
Best Value
- Quick access to all Social Media and Email Accounts in a single app.
- Privacy Lock to prevent unauthorized access of your Social Media Accounts and keep your Social Accounts Private and Safe.
- Easy, Clean and Beautiful interface.
- Saves phone memory and battery by combining your favourites Social Media in a single app.
- Convenience to access more than 45 social media from single app.
For events, files, commerce, or large organizational communities, you may need a combination of services rather than one replacement. For example, a club could use MeWe for its private group, a calendar service for events, and Signal for confidential planning.
Common claims that are wrong or outdated
| Claim | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| “Mastodon is a private Facebook replacement.” | Public is the default, and server operators may access followers-only posts and private mentions. |
| “Mastodon direct messages are encrypted.” | Private mentions restrict visibility but are not end-to-end encrypted messages. |
| “Bluesky is private because it is decentralized.” | Bluesky is public by design; direct messages are unencrypted. |
| “Bluesky blocks are private.” | Blocks are currently public and enumerable. |
| “Pixelfed is a complete Facebook replacement.” | It is primarily a photo-and-video network, despite supporting comments, stories, albums, and messages. |
| “Federated automatically means private.” | Federation distributes control across servers; it does not automatically encrypt content or hide it from administrators and recipients. |
How to choose
- Choose MeWe if your first requirement is a private group that feels familiar to Facebook users.
- Choose Mastodon if selecting a community-run server and using a chronological feed matter more than Facebook-style features.
- Choose Bluesky if your activity is mainly public discussion and you want custom feeds and moderation controls.
- Choose Pixelfed if photos and visual communities are the center of your social activity.
- Use an encrypted messenger separately when the content must remain confidential from service operators.
FAQ
Which Facebook alternative is most similar to Facebook?
MeWe is the closest match because it combines profiles, feeds, chats, family circles, and groups. Its Open, Selective, and Private group options also map more closely to Facebook’s community features than Mastodon, Bluesky, or Pixelfed.
Is Mastodon more private than Facebook?
Mastodon gives users and server operators more control, but it is not private by default. Posts default to Public, server operators can access some restricted content, and private mentions are not end-to-end encrypted.
Are Bluesky direct messages private?
No. Bluesky direct messages are unencrypted and may be accessed for Trust & Safety purposes. Do not use them for passwords, financial information, or other confidential conversations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat is the best Facebook alternative for sharing photos?
Pixelfed is the strongest choice if photo and video sharing is the main requirement. It offers albums, chronological feeds, follower approval, audience controls, and federation, but it does not replace Facebook’s full range of groups, events, and marketplace features.
The Bottom Line
MeWe is the best general Facebook alternative for private groups and familiar social features. Pick Mastodon for independent, chronological communities, Bluesky for public conversation and custom feeds, and Pixelfed for federated photo sharing.
For genuinely confidential messages, use a dedicated end-to-end encrypted messenger. “Private,” “direct,” and “followers-only” labels on social networks do not, by themselves, provide that protection.
