There is no single best mobile payment app because “mobile payment” covers two different jobs. Mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet store cards and passes for checkout. Peer-to-peer payment services such as Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, and Zelle move money between people, and some also support merchant payments.

This guide covers the strongest choices for U.S. consumers as of August 9, 2026. The recommendations are based on current product capabilities, requirements, fees, limits, and documented failure cases—not a claim of hands-on testing.

Quick comparison

App Best for Main drawback
Apple Pay / Apple Cash iPhone users who want contactless payments and built-in transfers Apple Cash send-and-receive access requires an eligible device, U.S. residency, and age 18 or older
Google Wallet Android contactless payments, transit, passes, and IDs It is not a U.S. peer-to-peer payment service
Samsung Wallet Galaxy users, particularly those with Galaxy Watches Limited to supported Samsung devices, cards, and regions
Venmo Social payments, shared bills, and participating merchant QR payments Instant transfers cost 1.75%; credit-card-funded payments cost 3%
Cash App Payments combined with banking features, Cash App Pay, and payment links Instant-transfer fees vary from 0.5% to 2.5%
PayPal Online shopping, international transfers, merchant payments, and QR payments Features, fees, and protections depend on the transaction type
Zelle Direct bank-to-bank transfers through a participating financial institution The standalone app is gone; access depends on your bank or credit union

Best mobile payment app for iPhone: Apple Pay and Apple Cash

Apple Pay is the best default choice for iPhone owners who primarily need to pay in stores, apps, and websites. It stores eligible debit and credit cards in the Wallet app, while Apple Cash adds person-to-person transfers through the same general Wallet experience.

Apple says the card number is not sent to the merchant during an in-store Apple Pay transaction. Apple Cash can be sent from Messages or Wallet, and newer iPhones can use Tap to Cash for nearby transfers.

Useful Apple Wallet paths

  • Add a card: Wallet > + > Debit or Credit Card
  • Send or request money: Wallet > Apple Cash card > Send or Request
  • Move Apple Cash to a bank: Wallet > Apple Cash card > More (…) > Transfer to Bank
  • Use Tap to Cash: Wallet > Apple Cash card > Send or Request > Tap to Cash

Apple Cash fees and limits

Action Cost or limit
Standard bank transfer Free; typically 1–3 business days
Instant transfer to an eligible U.S.-issued debit card 1.7%; $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum
Bank transfer amount Up to $10,000 per transfer and $20,000 in seven days
Apple Cash Family and Tap to Cash $2,000 rolling seven-day send/receive limit

Full Apple Cash send-and-receive functionality requires the user to be at least 18 and a U.S. resident. A child may have Apple Cash through Family Sharing but still lack features that depend on an eligible payment card or account setup. Instant Transfer also requires an eligible U.S.-issued debit card.

Be careful when entering bank-routing information. A transfer sent to the wrong account may be difficult or impossible to recover. Apple Pay and Apple Cash availability can also vary by device, operating system, country, bank, and card issuer.

Best Android wallet: Google Wallet

Google Wallet is the broadest Android wallet for contactless cards, tickets, transit passes, loyalty cards, keys, and supported IDs. Google Pay is still the branding used for some online, in-app, and tap-to-pay transactions, but Google Wallet is not the U.S. equivalent of Venmo.

Google ended peer-to-peer payments in the U.S. Google Pay app on June 4, 2024. Do not install Google Wallet expecting to send money to friends or request a dinner reimbursement.

Google Wallet setup paths

  • Add a card: Google Wallet > Add to Wallet > Payment card > New credit or debit card
  • Review payment setup: Google Wallet > Profile picture > Payment setup
  • Withdraw a remaining Google Pay balance: Google Wallet > balance profile button > Transfer out

For contactless payment, unlock the phone and hold it near the reader. Google Wallet does not need to be open. On June 22, 2026, Google removed the virtual Google Pay Balance Card as a payment method, although remaining funds can still be transferred out through Wallet.

What Google Wallet requires

  • Android 9 or later
  • NFC hardware with NFC enabled
  • Google Wallet selected as the default NFC wallet
  • A supported card and country
  • A screen lock
  • Current Google Play Services and Google Wallet software
  • A device that has not been rooted

Google Wallet does not support Android work profiles. Cards may appear to transfer when you move to a new phone, but they must be set up again for tap-to-pay transactions. This is a common reason a card appears in the wallet yet fails at a checkout terminal.

Square Reader for magstripe (USB-C)
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
  • Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
  • Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.

Best wallet for Samsung Galaxy devices: Samsung Wallet

Samsung Wallet is the right choice for Galaxy users who want Samsung-specific integration, including supported Galaxy Watch payments. It combines payment cards with membership cards, gift cards, boarding passes, keys, health passes, and other digital items.

Samsung Wallet paths

  • Add a card: Samsung Wallet > Menu or All > Payment cards > Add (+)
  • Choose the default NFC wallet: Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payment > Contactless payments > Samsung Pay
  • Disable Quick Access: Samsung Wallet > Menu > Settings > Quick Access
  • Send feedback: Samsung Wallet > Settings > Contact us > Send feedback

Samsung Wallet requires a supported Samsung phone or watch, an active Samsung account, a supported card, a registered fingerprint or Wallet PIN, and compatible payment hardware. Adding a card requires an active internet connection, and some issuers require additional authentication. ATM-only cards cannot be added.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat the wallet’s transaction list as a guaranteed full statement. Card issuers control which transactions Samsung Wallet receives. A hotel or other merchant may also show a temporary $1 authorization before the final amount posts.

A useful 2026 addition is support for buying an Atlanta MARTA transit card in Samsung Wallet, included in Samsung’s April 29 release notes.

Best for social payments and bill splitting: Venmo

Venmo remains the easiest fit for users who regularly split rent, restaurant checks, gifts, or household expenses with friends. It also supports merchant payments and QR checkout at participating U.S. businesses.

Venmo has two QR concepts that are easy to confuse:

Rank #3
Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
  • Venmo Me identifies your personal profile so another person can pay or connect with you.
  • Show to Pay displays the QR code used for in-store payment at participating merchants.

Venmo QR paths

  • Open QR options: Me tab > QR code button next to profile picture
  • Display your personal code: Me tab > QR code button > Venmo me
  • Scan someone else’s code: tap Scan at the top of the app
  • Pay in a store: Me tab > QR code button > Show to Pay

In-store QR payment requires Venmo version 7.53 or later, camera permission, an internet connection, a compatible payment method, and a participating U.S. merchant. A Venmo QR code will not work at every card terminal.

Venmo fees

  • Payments funded by a Venmo balance, bank account, or debit card: free
  • Payments funded by a credit card: 3%
  • Standard bank transfer: free, typically 1–3 business days
  • Instant Transfer: 1.75%, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum
  • Payments marked for goods and services: 2.99% seller transaction fee

QR scanning can fail when camera access is disabled, the app is outdated, the phone is offline, or the relevant user has blocked the other account.

Best all-around money app: Cash App

Cash App offers a wider combination of payment and financial features than a basic person-to-person service. Alongside transfers, it includes Cash App Pay, a debit card, direct deposit, savings, investing, payment links, and QR-based checkout.

Cash App Pay works when a customer scans a merchant QR code or selects Cash App Pay during supported online checkout. Payment links, introduced in late 2025, let a person request money through a link. Someone without a Cash App account may be able to pay the request using Apple Pay or Google Pay.

Cash App costs

Action Cost or timing
Standard transfer to a linked account Free; typically 1–3 business days
Instant Transfer 0.5%–2.5%; $0.25 minimum and $75 maximum
In-network ATM withdrawal $2.50, with possible reimbursement under eligibility rules

Cash App’s instant-transfer rate is variable, so check the confirmation screen rather than assuming a fixed fee. A payment link also does not guarantee payment—the recipient still has to open it and complete the payment flow.

Cash App’s range of features makes balances easy to misunderstand. Before confirming a transaction, check whether the money is coming from the Cash App balance, a linked bank account, or a Cash App Card transaction. QR payments also depend on the merchant’s Cash App Pay implementation and an active phone connection.

Rank #4
Square Reader for magstripe (with Lightning connector)
  • Pay one transparent rate per swipe for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express.
  • Works in conjunction with most downloadable Square point-of-sale apps on your device. Customers can pay, tip and sign directly on your device. Track payments in cash, gift cards and more. Also lets you send receipts via e-mail or text message, makes it easy to apply discounts, keeps a data and sales history log and more.
  • Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).

Best for online shopping and international payments: PayPal

PayPal is strongest when payment happens on a website, through an online merchant, across borders, or through a seller’s payment request. It supports online checkout, person-to-person payments, merchant QR payments, payment links, international transfers, and transfers between PayPal and Venmo.

PayPal QR and Tap to Pay paths

  • Display your personal QR code: PayPal app home screen > QR code button > Your code
  • Download your QR code: QR code button > Your code > download icon
  • Set up business Tap to Pay on iPhone: Menu > Tap to Pay on iPhone under Get Paid, then Get Started
  • Set up Android Tap to Pay: Menu > Tap to Pay under Get Paid, then Get Started
  • Refund a Tap to Pay transaction: Wallet > Activity > transaction > Refund

For personal QR payments, PayPal says both the sender and recipient need the PayPal app. Business Tap to Pay requires a Business PayPal account. On iPhone, it requires an iPhone XS or later with the latest iOS. On Android, it requires Android 8.1 or later, NFC, and Google Play Services. Tips are not currently supported through Tap to Pay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PayPal payment-request links expire after 10 days if unpaid. The recipient must open the link and sign in to PayPal or PayPal.com. Fees and purchase protections vary by whether the transaction is a personal transfer, merchant purchase, international payment, or another supported type.

Best direct bank transfer option: Zelle

Zelle is useful when both people want money to move directly between eligible checking or savings accounts. It is often built into a bank or credit-union app, so recipients do not need a separate wallet balance.

The standalone Zelle app was discontinued in 2025. Use the Zelle feature inside a participating bank or credit-union app instead. Because each institution designs its own interface, there is no universal menu path. Look for Zelle under transfers, payments, or send money in your bank’s app.

Both parties generally need to be enrolled, and the bank or credit union sets the sending and receiving limits. Zelle reports that, based on its cited Q3 2024 survey, 99.44% of linked consumer checking and savings accounts did not charge a fee to send, receive, or request money. That is not a promise for every account: confirm your institution’s policy.

Best Value
SumUp Plus Card Reader, Bluetooth - NFC RFID Credit Card Reader for Smartphone
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate
  • No hidden fees and no long-term contracts
  • Mobile card reader that accepts payments anywhere & anytime
  • Use the free SumUp App on your smartphone or tablet to start accepting transactions
  • Simply pay 2.6% +10 per in-person transaction

Zelle is best reserved for people you know and trust. An incorrectly entered enrolled recipient can be difficult or impossible to reverse. Zelle also should not be treated as having the same purchase-protection model as a credit card or merchant-payment service.

How to choose the right app

  1. Start with your phone. iPhone users should begin with Apple Pay; Android users should compare Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet; Samsung Wallet requires Samsung hardware.
  2. Separate checkout from transfers. Choose a wallet for tap-to-pay cards and passes. Choose Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, or Zelle when the main job is sending money to another person.
  3. Check the recipient network. Zelle requires participating financial institutions. Venmo and Cash App are more useful when your contacts already use them. PayPal is more practical for online sellers and international recipients.
  4. Compare transfer speed. Standard bank transfers are generally free but take 1–3 business days. Instant transfers cost extra and have different fee ceilings.
  5. Check merchant support. QR payment features are not universal. Venmo and Cash App require participating merchants, while Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet require a compatible card terminal and supported card.
  6. Review protections before paying a stranger. A person-to-person transfer is not automatically the same as a protected purchase. Use the service’s merchant or goods-and-services option where appropriate, and understand its fee.

Fees at a glance

FAQ

What is the best mobile payment app in 2026?

Apple Pay is the best default wallet for iPhone users, Google Wallet is the best general Android wallet, and Samsung Wallet is the best fit for supported Galaxy devices. For sending money, Venmo is strongest for social payments, Cash App offers the broadest financial feature set, PayPal is best for online and international use, and Zelle is best for direct bank transfers through a participating institution.

Can I still use Google Pay to send money to friends in the U.S.?

No. Google ended U.S. peer-to-peer payment functionality in the Google Pay app on June 4, 2024. Google Wallet remains a wallet for cards, passes, transit, IDs, and contactless payments, not a U.S. Venmo-style transfer service.

Is the Zelle app still available?

No. The standalone Zelle app was discontinued in 2025. Zelle remains available through participating banks and credit unions, but the menu path, limits, and fees depend on your financial institution.

The Bottom Line

For tap-to-pay purchases, use the wallet built for your phone: Apple Pay on iPhone, Google Wallet on most Android phones, or Samsung Wallet on supported Galaxy devices. For person-to-person payments, choose Venmo for social splitting, Cash App for an all-in-one money app, PayPal for online and international transactions, or Zelle when your bank supports it. Check the funding source, transfer speed, fee, recipient, and merchant eligibility before confirming a payment—especially when using instant transfers or QR codes.
