The best workout app depends less on the number of classes in its library than on how you actually train. Peloton and Apple Fitness+ are strong for guided sessions, Nike Training Club is the standout free option, Future is built around one-to-one coaching, and apps such as Fitbod, Ladder, Runna, and Strong are better suited to specific training goals.
We compared the services using workout variety, programming quality, ease of use, equipment requirements, progress tracking, coaching, offline access, and subscription terms. Prices below are current U.S. prices where the provider publishes them; your price may differ by country, platform, or promotion.
How we evaluated the workout apps
This list draws on hands-on testing and independent testing from fitness and technology reviewers. Good Housekeeping’s Nutrition & Fitness Lab tested more than 40 workout apps alongside consumer testers, assessing workout quality, class variety, ease of use, challenge level, engagement, and motivation. Forbes Health evaluated more than 40 apps against 15-plus metrics and had its rankings reviewed by at least three experienced health editors. Tom’s Guide tested apps over several weeks, including strength, yoga, and high-intensity workouts, while also checking content updates, music integration, offline access, and cost.
“Expert-tested” refers to testing the app as a product. It does not simply mean that an app’s workouts are presented by qualified trainers.

1. Peloton App: best overall for instructor-led variety
Peloton is the most versatile choice if you want an app to lead you through many different types of training. App One includes equipment-free strength, yoga, outdoor running, walking, meditation, Pilates, barre, dance cardio, and more. Classes are easy to start, and the instructor-led format supplies the structure and motivation that many standalone workout plans lack.
Peloton’s U.S. membership tiers changed in October 2025:
- App One: $15.99 per month, with equipment-free classes.
- App+: $28.99 per month, adding cardio-equipment classes and access to the Strength+ app.
- All-Access: $49.99 per month, required for connected Peloton Bike, Tread, or Row hardware.
New app members can currently receive a 30-day free trial. You do not need Peloton equipment for App One, but you should not expect every hardware-related metric to work without a Peloton Bike, Tread, or Row. This is a broad class platform, not a replacement for individualized programming.
2. Apple Fitness+: best for Apple users
Apple Fitness+ is particularly good if you already use an iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, or another compatible heart-rate monitor. It offers 12 workout types, including strength, HIIT, yoga, cycling, treadmill, rowing, Pilates, dance, core, kickboxing, mindful cooldowns, and meditation. Sessions range from five to 45 minutes, with new workouts added weekly.

The U.S. price is $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year. New subscribers receive a one-month trial, while some eligible device purchases include three months. To subscribe on an iPhone, open Fitness → Fitness+ → the offer or onscreen instructions → Subscribe.
An Apple Watch is not universally required anymore. Apple says real-time metrics can also come from AirPods Pro 3 or a compatible Bluetooth heart-rate monitor, although an Apple Watch still provides the fullest wrist-based experience. Family Sharing can extend the subscription to up to five additional family members.

- A FULL-FEATURED HEALTH TRACKER—Apple Watch Series 11 gives you invaluable insights about your body, right from your wrist. Take an ECG anytime* and get alerts for a high and low heart rate or an irregular rhythm*—so you can stay closer to your heart. You can also view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app* and be notified of possible sleep apnea.*

Best for: people who want polished, short guided workouts and already live in Apple’s ecosystem.
3. Nike Training Club: best free workout app
Nike Training Club is the easiest recommendation when the budget is zero. The app is free and includes strength, conditioning, HIIT, yoga, Pilates, recovery, mindfulness, gym workouts, home workouts, trainer-led classes, and whiteboard workouts. Forbes lists more than 300 workouts and support for iOS, Android, Apple Watch, and Garmin, along with health-data integration.
Nike’s former NTC Premium programs, workouts, and expert tips are now free to Nike Members. That means older reviews describing a separate paid Premium tier are out of date. The app is also not currently a Netflix add-on: Nike workouts were removed from Netflix in March 2024.
NTC is less specialized than a dedicated strength tracker or running coach, but its combination of variety, clear demonstrations, and no subscription fee makes it the best starting point for home workouts.
4. Future: best for high-touch personal coaching
Future is for people who want a human coach to build and adjust their training, rather than browse a video library. Coaches can design programs around a home gym, hotel gym, resistance bands, outdoor runs, group classes, or no equipment. The app can therefore adapt to a changing schedule more effectively than a fixed plan.
Future Pro currently costs $199 per month, or:
- $537 for three months ($179 per month)
- $1,014 for six months ($169 per month)
- $1,788 for 12 months ($149 per month)
The price is high because the product is a coaching service, not a conventional workout-video subscription. Future supports coach communication and personalized programming, but testing has identified some practical drawbacks, including no live-chat customer-support option and a website that is not especially easy to navigate. It also does not offer a pause shorter than one month.

To change a plan, use Profile → Settings → Your Account → Update Membership → Change Membership Plan. The cancellation route is Profile → Account → Update Membership → Cancel Subscription.
5. Caliber: best for strength programming with optional coaching
Caliber combines a capable free strength tracker with an optional human-coaching service. Its free app advertises more than 100 strength and mobility plans, over 700 exercises, custom exercises, supersets, substitutions, rest timers, exercise history, demonstration videos, strength analytics, and wearable or food-log synchronization.
The free tracker is distinct from Caliber’s paid coaching. With coaching, a certified coach can program strength, cardio, nutrition, and habits, communicate through video and text, conduct live video calls, and review form videos that you upload. Caliber says coaches generally respond within a few hours and perform several check-ins per week, including a weekly review.
Caliber does not publish one universal coaching price on the pages reviewed, so check the current offer before treating it as a direct price competitor to Future. Choose the free version if you mainly need logging and a plan; choose coaching if you want feedback and accountability.

6. Fitbod: best for adaptive, equipment-based gym workouts
Fitbod is designed around the equipment you have and the muscles you need to train. It is a better match for someone who regularly lifts in a gym than for someone looking for instructor-led cardio, yoga, or meditation classes. The app generates workouts and adjusts recommendations based on your training history and available equipment.
Current listed pricing is $15.99 per month or $95.99 per year, equivalent to $8 per month. New users receive a seven-day trial. The exact price can vary by region, promotion, and whether you subscribe through Fitbod’s website, Apple, or Google Play.

- GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*
- A GREAT FITNESS TRACKER—SE 3 can track your workouts in a healthy number of ways—from running and strength training to simply achieving your 10K steps a day. With real-time metrics and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone,* you’ll hit your goals like never before.

- GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*
One important billing trap: deleting Fitbod does not cancel an app-store subscription. If you began the trial through Apple or Google, cancel it in that platform’s subscription settings before the seven days end or it will automatically convert to a paid subscription.
7. Ladder: best for structured strength plans
Ladder is a strength-programming app rather than a general fitness video library. It delivers a coach-built daily plan and a new weekly plan for home or gym use. The team-based format gives the program a sense of continuity and community, which can make it easier to follow than assembling individual workouts from a large catalog.
Ladder offers a seven-day trial without asking for a credit card. Payment details are collected only after the trial ends. During the trial, you can try multiple teams. After subscribing, the PRO Annual plan provides access to all teams, while PRO Monthly allows you to change teams twice per month.
The current iOS listing identifies Ladder as designed for iPhone and Apple Watch. It is a good choice if you want a prescribed strength routine and a coach-led team, but not if you want extensive running, meditation, or mixed-class content.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Runna: best for goal-specific running plans
Runna is built around running objectives rather than general workouts. It supports race plans from 5K through 50K and creates a schedule based on your experience, target event, and training details. Recommended minimum plan lengths range from eight weeks for a new-to-running plan to 16 weeks for marathon and ultramarathon plans.
To create a plan, open Plan → Manage Plan → Start New Plan, choose the plan type, enter your details, and select Start Plan.

- A POWERFUL FITNESS TRACKER—With advanced metrics and motivating features like Pacer, Heart Rate Zones, training load, and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone*—Series 11 is made to help everyone stay active, from runners and hikers to strength-training enthusiasts.
There are limits worth knowing before you subscribe. Plans are capped at 26 weeks, and Runna uses distance-based goals rather than letting you train toward a total time goal. It does not offer dedicated race plans longer than 50K; for a longer ultra, the 50K Ultra plan is the closest alternative. A race more than 26 weeks away may require separate training blocks or a later plan start date.
9. Strong: best for straightforward workout logging
Strong is a focused logging tool for people who already know what they want to do in the gym. Its library contains more than 200 exercises with instructions and videos, and you can search for movements or create custom exercises when the built-in list does not include one.
Strong can connect to Apple Health or Google Fit and receive macronutrient data from compatible apps. Its value is in recording sets, repetitions, weight, and progress with minimal friction. It is not a human-coaching service, an adaptive plan comparable to Fitbod, or a large instructor-led class platform.
Which workout app should you choose?
| If you want… | Choose… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Many guided workout styles | Peloton App | Large instructor-led catalog across cardio, strength, mobility, and mindfulness. |
| Apple integration and short sessions | Apple Fitness+ | Strong device integration and workouts from five to 45 minutes. |
| No subscription cost | Nike Training Club | Broad library and guided sessions are free for Nike Members. |
| A dedicated personal coach | Future | Human programming and ongoing accountability. |
| Strength tracking | Caliber or Strong | Caliber adds programming; Strong keeps logging simple. |
| Automatic gym-workout suggestions | Fitbod | Plans adapt to equipment and training history. |
| A coach-built strength team | Ladder | Weekly plans and team-based structure. |
| A race plan | Runna | Goal-specific schedules from 5K through 50K. |
Check these details before starting a trial
- Confirm the tier. Peloton App One, App+, Strength+, and All-Access are different products with different equipment support.
- Check the renewal rule. Fitbod’s seven-day trial automatically becomes paid unless canceled. Ladder currently does not collect payment details before its trial ends.
- Subscribe through the channel you intend to manage. Website, Apple App Store, and Google Play prices and cancellation controls may differ.
- Verify device requirements. Equipment-free classes may still offer fewer metrics without the required watch, monitor, or connected hardware.
- Match the app to your actual routine. A sophisticated plan cannot compensate for a schedule you will not follow. Consistency is more important than choosing the app with the longest feature list.
These apps provide exercise content, tracking, or coaching; they do not diagnose injuries or replace medical clearance or physical therapy. If you have a health condition, an injury, or uncertainty about safe exercise, get advice from an appropriate clinician.
FAQ
What is the best workout app overall in 2026?
Peloton App is the strongest overall choice for instructor-led variety. It covers strength, yoga, running, walking, Pilates, barre, meditation, and other formats, although its higher tiers cost more and some metrics require Peloton equipment.
What is the best free workout app?
Nike Training Club is the best free option for most people. It offers more than 300 workouts across strength, HIIT, yoga, Pilates, recovery, and mindfulness, and Nike’s former Premium content is now free for Nike Members.
Which workout app provides a real personal coach?
Future and Caliber’s paid coaching service provide human coaching. Future is centered on one-to-one programming and accountability, while Caliber combines strength tracking with coaching, form-video reviews, and nutrition and habit support.
Can I use Apple Fitness+ without an Apple Watch?
Yes. Apple says Fitness+ can provide real-time metrics through AirPods Pro 3 or a compatible Bluetooth heart-rate monitor. An Apple Watch is still needed for the fullest wrist-based metric experience, and device compatibility affects which metrics are available.
The Bottom Line
Our top pick is Peloton App for the widest range of polished, instructor-led workouts. Choose Apple Fitness+ if you use Apple devices, Nike Training Club if you want to spend nothing, Future for human coaching, Fitbod or Caliber for strength, and Runna for race-focused running. Before subscribing, check the exact tier, platform price, device requirements, and trial-renewal terms.
