Twitch is a live-streaming platform built around real-time video, channel-based communities, and viewer interaction. Gaming remains its biggest category, but Twitch also carries music, sports, creative work, talk shows, events, and other live programming.
You can watch many streams without signing in, but a free account is needed to follow channels, use chat, create clips, and stream. This guide explains how Twitch works for viewers and creators, including subscriptions, Bits, VODs, Drops, raids, moderation, monetization, and vertical streaming.
What is Twitch?
Twitch is a live, interactive video service where creators broadcast in real time and viewers watch, chat, follow channels, and support streamers. Unlike a conventional on-demand video site, Twitch is designed around what is happening now: a live player, a channel chat room, and tools that let the audience influence or participate in the broadcast.
Amazon announced an agreement to acquire Twitch in August 2014 for approximately $970 million in cash. Twitch is now available through a web browser, mobile apps, game consoles, smart TVs, and streaming software.

A Twitch channel commonly includes:
- A live video and audio player
- A channel chat room
- The stream title, category, language, and tags
- Follow and subscription controls
- Bits, Cheers, and other support features when enabled
- Panels containing links or channel information
- Clips and past broadcasts, if available
How Twitch works
A streamer sends audio and video from a phone, console, computer, encoder, or broadcasting application to Twitch. Twitch processes the broadcast and distributes it to viewers. The creator chooses a category—such as a particular game, Music, Just Chatting, or Creative—and can add a title, tags, language, and applicable content labels.
Viewers can watch the stream, communicate in chat, follow the channel, create permitted clips, and sometimes take part in polls, predictions, channel-point redemptions, or game-related Drops. The channel owner and moderators control the community rules and can restrict or remove users.
How to find and watch Twitch streams
Streams can be discovered from Twitch’s homepage, category pages, search results, followed channels, recommended channels, and the left navigation bar. Following a channel is free and makes it easier to find the channel again or receive a notification when it goes live.
An account is not always required just to watch. Signing in is worthwhile if you want to:

Following versus subscribing
These two controls are often confused:
| Feature | Cost | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Follow | Free | Helps you keep track of a channel and can notify you when the streamer goes live. |
| Subscribe | Paid, except for eligible Prime subscriptions | Provides channel-specific benefits such as emotes, badges, subscriber chat, or ad-free viewing when enabled. |
Subscriptions normally come in Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3. Billing can be monthly, three-monthly, or six-monthly, depending on the option selected. Twitch—not the individual streamer—sets the base subscription price, including local subscription pricing.
Some benefits vary by channel. A streamer may enable subscriber-only chat, subscriber-only streams, custom emotes, or ad-free viewing, but subscribing does not guarantee every possible benefit on every channel.
Prime Gaming can provide an eligible Amazon Prime member with one one-month channel subscription token. The Amazon and Twitch accounts may need to be linked before it can be used.
Chat, moderators, and community tools
Each channel has its own chat. A streamer or moderator can enable controls that change who can speak and how quickly messages can be sent:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Follower-only mode: only followers can chat, sometimes after following for a specified period.
- Subscriber-only mode: only subscribers can chat.
- Slow mode: users must wait between messages.
- Emote-only mode: chat is limited to emotes.
Moderators can warn users, issue timeouts, ban accounts, manage polls and predictions, and help enforce the channel’s rules. VIPs receive a channel badge and can chat without being affected by slow mode, follower-only mode, subscriber-only mode, or normal chat rate limits.
Clips, VODs, and past broadcasts
Clips
A clip is a short excerpt taken from a live stream or VOD. Logged-in viewers can create clips when the channel permits clipping. A streamer can restrict clipping to followers or subscribers, or disable the feature completely.
Streamers manage clips at Creator Dashboard → Content → Clips. From Clips Manager, they can review, moderate, edit, share, or permanently delete clips. Twitch supports both landscape and portrait versions.
There are two easy-to-miss limitations:
- A viewer may lose the ability to edit or delete a clip they created after the channel owner edits, features, or exports it.
- Trying to clip the first 90 seconds of a VOD can produce an error or unpredictable behavior.
VODs and past broadcasts
A past broadcast is saved as a video-on-demand recording, but it is not permanent by default. Twitch’s normal retention periods are:

|---|---|
| Standard streamer | 7 days |
| Affiliate | 14 days |
| Partner, Prime, or Turbo user | 60 days |
Creators who want to preserve a broadcast should download or export it before the retention period ends. Dual Format streams have an additional distinction: the portrait VOD expires after seven days even when the horizontal VOD remains available for the creator’s applicable retention period. Clips from Dual Format streams are available in portrait and landscape formats and do not expire under Twitch’s stated policy.

What are Twitch Drops?
Twitch Drops are rewards supplied through participating game campaigns. A campaign may require you to watch a qualifying live stream for a specified time or complete another stated requirement.
Watching a VOD, replay, or clip generally does not count. If a campaign ends before you complete the requirement, your progress is lost. Unclaimed Drops expire when the campaign ends, while claimed rewards commonly have a separate redemption window set by the campaign.
How to stream on Twitch
Creators can broadcast with desktop software such as OBS or Twitch Studio, a game console, the Twitch mobile app, a third-party mobile app, or specialized hardware. Twitch says a camera and microphone are optional, although both are common for interactive streams. The essentials are a stable internet connection and an encoder or broadcasting tool.
Streaming a mobile game
In the Twitch mobile app:
- Tap the camera icon in the top navigation.
- Choose Stream Games.
- Select or search for the game.
- Enter the stream title and category.
- Start the broadcast.
On Android, the process includes Launch game, followed by Start Stream in Stream Manager. To finish, open Stream Manager and tap the red End Stream button. On iOS, the recording control may remain unavailable until the required stream information has been entered.
Important privacy warning: mobile broadcasting can show everything on the phone’s screen. Notifications, private messages, account details, password-reset emails, and other apps may appear on stream. Disable notifications and avoid opening sensitive screens while live.
Creator Dashboard and Stream Manager
The Creator Dashboard is Twitch’s main workspace for streamers. Its navigation includes Home, Stream Manager, Creator Updates, Alerts, Analytics, Community, Content, Monetization, Moderation, Settings, Viewer Rewards, Streaming Tools, Charity, Extensions, Creator Camp, and Safety Center.
Stream Manager is the live control panel. It can contain panels for chat, stream information, activity feeds, alerts, goals, polls, predictions, and other tools. Twitch’s Dashboard Search shortcut is Ctrl+/ on Windows and Cmd+/ on Mac.
To change the stream title, category, tags, language, or content labels, use:
Creator Dashboard → Stream Manager → Edit Stream Info
If Edit Stream Info is missing, open the top-left Stream Manager menu, select Edit Stream Manager Panels, and add the panel.
Raids: sending viewers to another channel
A raid sends viewers from one live channel to another when a stream ends. The streamer or a channel editor can enter this command in chat:
/raid channelname
For example:
/raid twitchpresents
Twitch displays a countdown and a Start raid now control. The streamer can start the raid manually after the countdown; if no action is taken, Twitch may begin it automatically after the stated timeout.
Raids can also deliver spam or harassment, especially when a channel is targeted by a hostile group. Follower-only chat, email or phone verification, AutoMod, timeouts, bans, and reporting tools can help protect the receiving channel.

How Twitch streamers make money
Potential revenue sources include:
- Paid subscriptions and gift subscriptions
- Prime subscriptions
- Bits and Cheers
- Advertising
- Sponsorships and branded content
- Donations or external payment services
- Channel-specific rewards and community activities
Bits and Cheers
Bits are a Twitch virtual good purchased by viewers. A viewer sends Bits in chat through a Cheer. Depending on the channel and feature availability, a Cheer can trigger animations, badges, leaderboards, Cheermotes, or Power-ups. The channel must have Bits enabled to accept Cheers, and streamers can set minimum Bit requirements for emotes or Cheer messages.
Channel Points
Channel Points are channel-specific rewards earned by logged-in viewers through activities such as watching, following, chatting, or joining raids. Streamers can configure custom rewards in the Creator Dashboard. Some rewards are automated, while others require the streamer to fulfill them manually.
Monetization for All
Twitch’s 2026 Monetization for All rollout expanded access to tools historically associated with Affiliates and Partners, including Bits, subscriptions, emotes, badges, and Channel Points. Access to these tools does not automatically make a streamer eligible for cash payouts. Twitch still requires Affiliate or Partner status and completion of the applicable onboarding requirements for payouts.
The updated Affiliate milestones listed by Twitch are:
- Stream for 4 hours
- Stream on 4 different days
- Reach at least 3 average concurrent viewers on 4 different days
- Reach 25 followers
Eligible creators are notified by email and through the Creator Dashboard when onboarding is available. Twitch lists a $50 minimum payout threshold. In the United States, Twitch also introduced Spendable Balance, allowing eligible streamers to use accumulated balance for purchases such as Bits and gifted subscriptions before reaching the cash-payout threshold. Broader availability is being rolled out over time.
Plus Program
The Plus Program can provide qualifying Affiliates and Partners with enhanced net subscription-revenue shares:
- Level 1: 60/40
- Level 2: 70/30
Qualification is based on Plus Points accumulated over three consecutive months. Tier 1 subscriptions count as 1 point, Tier 2 as 2 points, and Tier 3 as 6 points. Gift subscriptions can contribute to eligible revenue but do not count toward Plus Program qualification points under the documented rules.
Horizontal, vertical, and Dual Format streaming
Twitch’s Dual Format Streaming sends horizontal and vertical versions of a broadcast to Twitch simultaneously. Desktop and TV viewers generally see the horizontal version. Mobile viewers can see the vertical version by default and switch back to the classic horizontal view.
Dual Format Streaming is available to all streamers, but it requires Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting technology, compatible broadcasting software, and additional system resources. Twitch’s setup instructions focus on OBS with the Aitum Vertical plugin, although other compatible tools are also listed.
This is different from streaming vertically through the basic Twitch mobile app. A mobile-app vertical broadcast does not currently provide the same horizontal/vertical switching experience; desktop viewers also see the vertical feed.

Moderation, labels, and safety
AutoMod
AutoMod uses automated language analysis to hold potentially risky chat messages for moderator review before they appear publicly. A moderator chooses Allow or Deny. AutoMod can detect some misspellings and evasive language, but it is not a replacement for human moderation.
Moderation preferences can include an AutoMod level, blocked terms, permitted terms, follower and subscriber restrictions, and email or phone verification requirements.
Content Classification Labels
Twitch replaced the former general Mature Content toggle with specific Content Classification Labels. Streamers apply them through:

- Drugs, Intoxication, or Excessive Tobacco Use
- Violent and Graphic Depictions
- Significant Profanity or Vulgarity
- Politics and Sensitive Social Issues
- Gambling
A label does not permit prohibited content. Twitch’s Community Guidelines still apply. Incorrect labeling can lead to warnings or a Twitch-applied label. Twitch says streams labeled for sexual themes, drugs or intoxication, violent and graphic depictions, or gambling are excluded from certain front-page recommendation shelves, although they may still appear in followed or recommended channel areas.
Age requirements
Twitch requires users to be at least 13 years old globally. Users between 13 and the legal age of adulthood in their location may use Twitch only under parent or legal-guardian supervision. Local law can impose different requirements, and some regions require age verification for account creation, login, or access to labeled content.
In regions using Twitch’s facial age-estimation process, Twitch says the scan is processed on the device and the face-scan video selfie is not stored or shared. Verification attempts may be limited daily; after exceeding the limit, a user may need to wait 24 hours before trying again.
Common Twitch misconceptions
“Twitch is only for video games”
Gaming is still central, but Twitch also hosts music, sports, creative work, talk formats, events, and other live content.
“Only Affiliates and Partners can use monetization tools”
This is no longer completely accurate after the 2026 Monetization for All rollout. Twitch expanded access to several tools, including subscriptions, Bits, emotes, badges, and Channel Points. Cash payouts still require the applicable Affiliate or Partner status and onboarding.
“A livestream automatically becomes a permanent video”
It does not. Past broadcasts expire according to the creator’s status unless they are downloaded or exported. Clips are separate from VODs and do not follow the ordinary VOD-retention schedule.
“A mature-content label makes prohibited content acceptable”
It does not. Labels identify permitted mature themes; they do not override Twitch’s Community Guidelines.
“Watching a VOD counts for Twitch Drops”
Usually it does not. Drops generally require watching a qualifying live stream while the campaign is active. VODs, replays, and clips normally do not add progress.
FAQ
Is Twitch free to use?
Watching many streams and following channels is free. Some channel features cost money, including subscriptions, gift subscriptions, and purchased Bits. A free account is required for chat, following, clipping, and broadcasting.
Can I watch Twitch without an account?
Yes, many public streams can be watched without signing in. You need an account to follow channels, participate in chat, create clips, and stream.
How long do Twitch VODs last?
Standard streamers generally retain past broadcasts for 7 days, Affiliates for 14 days, and Partners, Prime users, and Turbo users for 60 days. Creators should download or export broadcasts they want to keep.
Can Twitch Drops be earned from VODs or clips?
Generally no. Twitch Drops normally require viewing a qualifying live stream during the active campaign. VODs, replays, and clips usually do not count toward the required progress.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Bottom Line
Twitch is more than a gaming video site: it is a live community platform combining real-time broadcasts, channel chat, moderation, viewer rewards, and creator support. Viewers can start for free, while creators can stream from a computer, console, phone, or compatible hardware. The main practical limitations to remember are that VODs expire, Drops usually require live viewing, mobile broadcasts can expose private notifications, and monetization-tool access does not automatically guarantee cash payouts.
