The best workout app depends on what you want the software to do: stream instructor-led classes, build a progressive strength plan, log workouts, coach you individually, or prepare you for a race. There is no single winner across all five categories.
This guide narrows the field using current pricing, device support, subscription terms, programming features, and independent testing. Good Housekeeping and Forbes Health each evaluated more than 40 workout apps, while Tom’s Guide tested apps over several weeks across strength, yoga, and high-intensity workouts. Prices and features below are U.S. details checked as of August 8, 2026; your country, device, promotion, or subscription channel may show different terms.
Quick comparison
| App or service | Best for | Current pricing or access | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peloton App | Instructor-led variety | App One $15.99/month; App+ $28.99/month | Some equipment metrics require Peloton hardware |
| Apple Fitness+ | Apple users and varied short workouts | $9.99/month or $79.99/year | Best metric experience depends on a compatible Apple or Bluetooth device |
| Nike Training Club | Free workouts | Free for Nike Members | Less specialized than dedicated strength or running apps |
| Future | One-on-one coaching | $199/month, down to $149/month on a 12-month plan | Very expensive compared with workout libraries |
| Caliber | Strength programming with optional coaching | Free tracker; paid coaching has separate pricing | Not a broad instructor-led class service |
| Fitbod | Adaptive gym workouts | $15.99/month or $95.99/year | Seven-day trial automatically renews unless canceled |
| Ladder | Structured coach-led strength plans | Seven-day trial; subscription required afterward | Primarily strength programming, not a general class library |
| Runna | Goal-based running plans | Subscription pricing varies by market and offer | Plans are distance-based and capped at 26 weeks |
| Strong | Simple workout logging | Free and paid features vary by platform | It logs training rather than coaching it |
Best overall for instructor-led variety: Peloton App
Peloton is the strongest general recommendation if motivation comes from following a recognizable instructor and choosing from many class formats. App One includes equipment-free strength, yoga, outdoor running, walking, meditation, Pilates, barre, dance cardio, and other sessions. App+ adds cardio-equipment classes and access to the Strength+ app.
U.S. pricing is currently $15.99 per month for App One and $28.99 per month for App+. Peloton’s All-Access membership costs $49.99 per month and is required for connected Peloton Bike, Tread, or Row hardware. New app members may see a 30-day free trial.

App One is the sensible choice for most people without Peloton equipment. Do not treat it as a cheaper version of All-Access: the tiers do not provide identical content or equipment support. You can take many classes without Peloton hardware, but equipment-dependent metrics will not be available.
Choose Peloton if:
- You want a large mix of live-feeling, on-demand classes.
- Instructor personality helps you stay consistent.
- You want options ranging from five-minute meditation to longer strength or cardio sessions.
Best for Apple users: Apple Fitness+
Apple Fitness+ is a particularly good fit for someone already using an iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, or another compatible heart-rate monitor. It offers 12 workout types, including strength, HIIT, yoga, cycling, treadmill, rowing, Pilates, dance, core, kickboxing, mindful cooldowns, and meditation. Workouts range from 5 to 45 minutes, with new sessions added weekly.
The U.S. price is $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year. New subscribers receive a one-month trial, while some eligible device purchases qualify for three months. Family Sharing allows the subscription to be shared with up to five additional family members.
An Apple Watch is not universally required. Apple says real-time metrics can also come from AirPods Pro 3 or a compatible Bluetooth heart-rate monitor. However, the available metrics depend on the device, so an iPhone-only experience will not be identical to using an Apple Watch.

How to subscribe on an iPhone

Best free option: Nike Training Club
Nike Training Club is the easiest recommendation for readers who want a useful library without adding another monthly bill. Nike currently lists the app as free, with strength, conditioning, HIIT, yoga, Pilates, recovery, mindfulness, gym workouts, home workouts, trainer-led classes, and whiteboard workouts. Forbes lists more than 300 workouts and availability on iOS and Android, along with Apple Watch and Garmin compatibility.
The old NTC Premium distinction is no longer the right way to describe the service. Nike says former Premium programs, workouts, and expert tips are now free to Nike Members. Also ignore older articles directing readers to Netflix: the Nike Training Club Netflix partnership ended, and those workouts were removed in March 2024.
NTC is a strong starting point, but it is not as specialized as Fitbod for adaptive gym programming, Runna for race preparation, or Future for human coaching. Its free access is the advantage.

- Google Fitbit Air is the unbelievably comfortable, exceptionally smart way to transform your health[1]; and Google Health brings together effortless tracking and adaptive coaching to help make the most of your everyday[2]
- Unlock more with Google Health Premium: With a premium membership, get personalized coaching that’s built with Gemini and adapts to your life[2]; get a 3-month trial at no cost to you[5] (Google Health Premium subscription sold separately)

- Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]
Best for high-touch personal coaching: Future
Future is not a conventional workout-video subscription. You are paying for a dedicated human coach who builds and adjusts your training rather than simply selecting a class from a catalog. Coaches can design plans around home equipment, hotel gyms, resistance bands, outdoor runs, group classes, or no equipment.
Current Future Pro pricing is:
| Billing term | Total price | Effective monthly price |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $199 | $199 |
| Three months | $537 | $179 |
| Six months | $1,014 | $169 |
| Twelve months | $1,788 | $149 |
That price makes sense only if ongoing human accountability is worth substantially more to you than a video library or automated plan. Fortune’s 2026 testing noted that Future lacks a live-chat support option and that its website is not especially easy to navigate. Future also does not offer a pause shorter than one month.
Manage or cancel a Future plan
To change the plan in the app, open Profile → Settings → Your Account → Update Membership → Change Membership Plan. To cancel, use Profile → Account → Update Membership → Cancel Subscription. Check the final confirmation screen rather than assuming deleting the app stops billing.
Best strength tracker with optional coaching: Caliber
Caliber is best understood as two related products. Its free app is a strength and mobility tracker; its paid service adds one-on-one coaching. The free version advertises more than 100 strength and mobility plans, 700-plus exercises, custom exercises, supersets, substitutions, rest timers, exercise history, demonstration videos, strength analytics, and wearable or food-log synchronization.
The paid coaching service pairs you with a certified coach who can program strength, cardio, nutrition, and habit work. Communication includes live video calls plus video and text messages. Caliber says coaches generally respond within a few hours and conduct several check-ins per week, including a weekly review. You can also record an exercise and send the video for form feedback.

The free tracker is a good choice if you already know what to do and mainly need progression, history, and structure. Choose coaching if you want a human to interpret your training and correct your technique.
Best for adaptive gym workouts: Fitbod
Fitbod generates workouts around available equipment, previous training, and recovery or muscle-group history. It is a useful middle ground between writing every session yourself and hiring a coach. It is aimed at people who train in a gym or have a defined home setup, not users primarily looking for instructor-led cardio classes.

- Simple & Screen-Free Design – Easy to use and ultra-lightweight, comfortable for all-day wear without the distraction of a screen
- Powerful Health Monitoring – Accurately tracks heart rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen, HRV, sleep quality, and stress levels to help you better understand your body
- 100+ Sports Modes – Supports a wide range of fitness activities with precise tracking, making it your reliable companion for workouts and daily movement
- Ultra-Long Battery Life – Just 2 hours of charging powers up to 47 days of standby, so you can focus on your goals without constant recharging
- No Subscription Required – Enjoy all features with the free app, fast syncing, and easy Bluetooth connection—no hidden costs
The current listed price is $15.99 per month or $95.99 per year, equivalent to $8 per month when paid annually. New users receive a seven-day trial.
The important subscription trap is automatic renewal: the seven-day trial converts to a paid subscription unless you cancel it through the relevant subscription channel before it ends. Deleting Fitbod does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription.
Recommended Free Tools
Before starting a Fitbod trial
- Note whether you started the trial on Fitbod’s website, Apple’s App Store, or Google Play.
- Open that same service’s subscription-management page.
- Cancel before the seventh day if you do not want the paid renewal.
- Keep the cancellation confirmation email or screen.
Fitbod also warns that regional pricing, promotions, and the purchase platform can change the displayed amount. Verify the checkout screen before comparing it with another app.
Best for structured strength teams: Ladder
Ladder provides a coach-built daily workout plan and a new plan each week for home or gym training. Its team format gives the program more structure than a generic exercise library while letting users choose a coach or training style that suits them.
The current trial lasts seven days and does not require a credit card. Ladder collects payment information only after the trial ends. During the trial, you can try multiple teams. After subscribing, PRO Annual gives access to all teams, while PRO Monthly allows two team changes per month.
Ladder is primarily a strength-programming product. It is not the best pick if you want a large library of yoga, meditation, dance, or general cardio classes. The current iOS listing identifies it as designed for iPhone and Apple Watch, with in-app purchases.
Best for goal-specific running: Runna
Runna is the specialist choice for runners who want a plan tied to a race distance or running goal. Supported race plans currently range from 5K through 50K. There are no dedicated plans for races longer than 50K; Runna says its 50K Ultra plan is the closest alternative.

- 【Sleep Tracker】 Fitness watch automatically measures your fall asleep, awake times, light and deep sleep, then review your sleep quality and duration in the App. Please note that the data should be for reference only and does not replace a doctor's advice.

Plans are capped at 26 weeks and are distance-based rather than total-time-based. Recommended minimum plan lengths include eight weeks for a new-to-running plan, eight weeks for 5K improvement, 10 weeks for a 10K, 12 weeks for a half marathon, and 16 weeks for a marathon or ultramarathon.
Create a Runna plan
- Open Plan.
- Tap Manage Plan.
- Select Start New Plan.
- Choose the plan type.
- Enter your race and training details.
- Tap Start Plan.
If your race is more than 26 weeks away, use training blocks or set a later plan start date. Runna is a better fit for a runner with a specific objective than for someone who wants random daily workouts.
Best simple workout logger: Strong
Strong focuses on recording workouts rather than delivering coaching. Its library contains more than 200 exercises with instructions and videos. You can search for an exercise or create a custom movement when the built-in library does not match your routine.

That makes it useful for people who already have a program—such as a routine from a trainer, a spreadsheet, or their own plan—and need fast logging, history, and progress visibility.
Strong should not be compared directly with Peloton or Apple Fitness+. It does not try to be an instructor-led class platform, and it is not a substitute for Future or Caliber coaching.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right workout app
- Decide whether you need content or programming. Choose Peloton, Apple Fitness+, or Nike Training Club for classes. Choose Fitbod, Ladder, or Runna for a plan. Choose Strong if you already have the plan.
- Set a realistic price ceiling. A $10 subscription and Future’s $199 monthly coaching service solve different problems. Compare only equivalent tiers.
- Check device and equipment requirements. Review whether you need an Apple device, heart-rate monitor, gym equipment, Peloton hardware, or only a phone.
- Read trial-renewal terms. Ladder currently does not request payment information during its trial; Fitbod’s trial automatically converts unless canceled.
- Test adherence, not just workout quality. The best app is the one you will open consistently. A technically excellent library is useless if its format, session length, or coaching style does not fit your routine.
What “expert-tested” means here
“Expert-tested” refers to independent product-testing work, not simply the presence of qualified trainers in an app. Good Housekeeping’s 2026 Nutrition & Fitness Lab tested more than 40 apps using hands-on evaluation and consumer feedback, considering workout quality, class variety, ease of use, challenge, engagement, and motivation. Forbes Health evaluated more than 40 apps across 15-plus metrics and had rankings fact-checked by at least three experienced health editors. Tom’s Guide used apps for several weeks and assessed followability, workout range, update frequency, music integration, offline access, and cost.
Those tests help assess the software and content experience. They do not establish that an app is appropriate for an injury, medical condition, or individual rehabilitation program. Seek medical or physical-therapy advice when those issues apply.
