The best video editor depends less on the number of AI buttons than on the work you need to finish. CyberLink PowerDirector 365 is the strongest all-around choice for enthusiasts, while Adobe Premiere remains the better fit for professional production. DaVinci Resolve is particularly compelling for studio workflows and color work, and iMovie is still the simplest free option for Mac users.
We also tested the practical differences that are easy to miss in feature lists: timeline design, multicamera support, export limits, platform compatibility, subscription terms, 4K handling, and how much technical knowledge each application expects.

1. CyberLink PowerDirector 365: Best overall
PowerDirector 365 offers the best balance between approachable editing and advanced tools. It is easier to learn than a traditional professional editor, but it is not limited to basic trimming and slideshow templates.
The application includes multicamera editing, VR editing, keyframes, masks, color grading, denoising, screen recording, proxy files, automatic captions, transcript-based editing, background and sky replacement, and face blurring without requiring motion tracking. Current versions also advertise AI speech-to-text, AI voice-over, talking avatars, image generation, 17 AI Anime Video styles, face and motion tracking, brand kits, speed ramping, reverse playback, and built-in Getty Images and Meta stock media.
#1 Best Overall
- Small and Portable with Built-In Battery
- Built-In Search Dial
- Keyboard Shortcuts Match Edit Functions
- Bluetooth or USB Connectivity
- Bundle Includes DaVinci Resolve 17 Studio (Activation Card)
PowerDirector is a particularly good fit for YouTube creators, family-video editors, social-media producers, and small teams that want professional-looking results without adopting Premiere’s more demanding workflow. It also performed well in rendering tests, although it should not be called the universal fastest editor: on the latest test runs, DaVinci Resolve finished first, with PowerDirector close behind.
Subscription versus one-time purchase
CyberLink now separates PowerDirector 365 from PowerDirector 2026. The subscription includes continuing AI features, templates, effects, performance updates, and expanded stock-media access. The perpetual version provides lifetime access to its included tools, but it is not the same continuously updated package.
Older guides may also say that PowerDirector includes Boris FX plug-ins. CyberLink’s current support information says those plug-ins are no longer included with PowerDirector 365/2026 and later versions. The preferences layout has also changed, so instructions written for older releases—particularly directions involving Timeline frame rate or Enable shadow files—may not match the current interface.
2. Adobe Premiere: Best for professionals
Adobe Premiere remains the most complete choice for professional editors working on commercial, broadcast, documentary, and collaborative projects. It supports unlimited video tracks, multicamera editing, motion tracking, 360-degree VR, 4K XAVC-S, and H.265/HEVC export, with a mature ecosystem of Adobe and third-party tools.
Recommended Free Tools
Premiere’s transcript workflow is one of its most useful productivity features. After creating a transcript, you can rearrange words in the Text-Based Editing panel and Premiere trims and rearranges the associated video on the timeline. To enable automatic transcription when starting a project, use Preferences > Media Analysis & Transcription > Automatic Transcription.
The June 2026 feature release is Premiere 26.3. It adds Firefly Boards import as ready-to-edit sequences, one-word-at-a-time caption animation, Shape Dissolve, and a customizable magnifying-lens effect. Premiere 26.2 added Film Impact effects and transitions, Sharp and Smooth edge-quality controls for Object Masking, Source Monitor audio waveforms, a searchable Sequence Index panel, improved offline-media reconnection, and Global Mute.
AI features have practical limits
Generative Extend can create additional frames at the beginning or end of a clip, but it requires an internet connection and creates a new generated clip in the Project panel rather than changing the original. Generated sections cannot be transcribed, used in Text-Based Editing, or included in captioning, and they are excluded from Media Intelligence visual-search results.
It also does not support clips with speed changes or time remapping. The workaround is to restore the clip to 100 percent speed, extend it, and then reapply the speed adjustment. Premiere’s Generative Media Tool can create video and sound effects inside the timeline, but it is still labeled beta and should not be treated as a mature replacement for every external generative-media service.

- Wireless Connection: ACK05 wireless shortcut keyboard supports bluetooth 5.0 connection directly, which is Good Design Award 2023 Winners, providing you a more flexible and clean workspace. You can also connect it via a Bluetooth dongle or USB cable. Total three ways connection bring you stable and fast transmission, also can meet your different work scenarios
- Please Note: If you do not download the driver, it can only be used as a regular shortcut keyboard. However, if you wish to customize the keys or program it, you must download the driver and configure it accordingly. If your device is an iPad or runs on iOS, after receiving the product, you need to download the "Shortcut Remote" app on your device in order to properly set up and use this product properly
- Compact Size with Large 1000 mAh Battery: The Wireless Shortcut Remote features a thin profile and weighs only 75 g, easy for one hand to hold. With built-in 1000 mAh battery ensures the continuous working for about 300 hours. Ready to speed up your creation whenever you grab it

- Anti-Ghosting Performance: The Mini Keydial features a new technology of Anti-ghosting for all ten keys, you can control with multi-keys at the same time, which will give you more customizable possibilities
Premiere is the best choice here for professionals, but its subscription cost, steeper learning curve, and more technical media-management requirements make it excessive for occasional home videos.
3. Apple iMovie: Best for easy editing on Macs
iMovie remains the best starting point for Mac users who want a free editor with a short learning curve. Its Storyboards and trailer templates help beginners structure a video, while chroma keying, picture-in-picture, audio filters, and support for iPhone Cinematic-mode footage cover common home and social-media projects.
Its Magic Movie feature analyzes a group of clips and automatically creates an edit. That is useful for quickly producing a coherent video from phone footage, but it does not turn iMovie into a professional editor. The application supports only two video timeline tracks, which becomes restrictive when a project needs several overlays, graphics, adjustment layers, or simultaneous camera angles.
Choose iMovie for vacations, school projects, short social videos, and basic family movies. Move to Final Cut Pro or Resolve when you need a larger multilayer timeline, more detailed color and audio controls, multicamera editing, or a workflow that can grow with regular production.

Final Cut Pro is a fast, capable professional editor for people committed to Apple’s platform. Its magnetic, trackless timeline reduces the need to manually manage clip gaps, while Auditions, Compound Clips, Connected Clips, Roles, and Smart Collections provide structure for larger projects.
Current features include spatial-video editing for Apple Vision Pro, Magnetic Mask, Scene Removal Mask, AI-assisted semantic search, and beat detection. A newer workflow can send a selected frame directly to Pixelmator Pro for a thumbnail or social graphic and return the result to the timeline.
Final Cut Pro is available as a $299.99 one-time Mac purchase. It is also included in Apple Creator Studio, which costs $12.99 per month or $129 per year in the United States. The student and educator price is $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year. Creator Studio also includes Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor, and MainStage, subject to platform availability.
The current Creator Studio version for Mac requires macOS 15.6 or later. The iPad version requires iPadOS 18.6 or later and a supported iPad, such as an M1-or-later iPad, an iPad with A16, or an iPad mini with A17 Pro. Final Cut Pro is not subscription-only, and that distinction matters if you expect to use it for several years.

The 5-layer sound-dampening fills gaps between the PCB, plate, and switches, effectively reducing cavity noise and delivering a pure, clean sound with every keystroke
Final Cut Pro is also one of the strongest options for multicamera work, 360-degree video, and Apple Vision Pro footage. Its 360-degree tools can remove the camera and tripod from a shot. The trade-off is platform lock-in: unlike Resolve, it is not available for Windows or Linux.
5. DaVinci Resolve: Best for studio work
DaVinci Resolve combines editing, color grading, Fusion motion graphics, Fairlight audio, media organization, and collaboration in one application. That makes it the most studio-oriented option in this list and one of the best choices for editors who need serious color correction or a unified post-production workflow.
Resolve is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its free edition is unusually capable, making it a strong option for students, independent filmmakers, and anyone willing to spend time learning a complex application. The interface and toolset are powerful rather than beginner-friendly; AI-assisted features do not remove that learning curve.
In the tested render benchmark, Resolve was the fastest application in the latest runs, followed closely by PowerDirector, Premiere, and ACDSee Luxea. This result applies to the test hardware and project, not every computer. The paid version is required for hardware GPU encoding in the tested workflow, so export performance can differ substantially between the free and Studio editions.
Resolve is the best pick when color, audio, collaboration, or cross-platform studio work matters more than a gentle introduction. It is also one of the two highlighted options—alongside Final Cut Pro—for editing footage intended for Apple Vision Pro.
6. Adobe Premiere Elements: Best for guided consumer editing
Premiere Elements is designed for people who want more control than iMovie or Clipchamp without learning a full professional application. Guided Edits explain common techniques, while Quick mode, templates, effects, masks, transitions, animated overlays, double exposures, and the Organizer make it suitable for family videos and creative projects.
It runs on both Windows and macOS. The important licensing detail is that a current Premiere Elements license lasts three years. It is not an unlimited lifetime license, despite what older buying guides may say.
Elements is easier to approach than Premiere, but it lacks Premiere’s professional collaboration model and should not be treated as a less expensive version of Premiere Pro. Choose it when guided help and consumer-oriented effects are more valuable than maximum timeline flexibility.

7. Microsoft Clipchamp: Best for small-business marketers and AI voice-overs
Clipchamp is available as a Windows application and through app.clipchamp.com in Edge or Chrome. Its browser-based workflow makes it convenient for marketing teams producing short announcements, social posts, product clips, and presentations.
The free personal tier exports up to 1080p. Eligible Microsoft 365 Personal or Family plans and Clipchamp Premium add 4K export, premium stock media, and other premium features. To export, click Export in the top-right corner, choose 480p, 720p, 1080p, 4K, GIF, or audio-only where available, and the export begins automatically. Video exports as an MPEG-4 .mp4 at 30 fps; audio-only exports use .m4a.
Microsoft specifies 4K export as 3840p resolution at 70 Mbps for eligible plans. You can import 4K footage on all account tiers, but editing may become slow on systems with limited memory, CPU, or GPU resources.
If a free-tier project contains premium media or features, diamond icons appear beside export options. You must remove those items or choose Switch to a new plan before exporting. Work and school projects are stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, with accompanying Assets and Exports folders, so Clipchamp should not be assumed to store every project only on the local computer.
What to look for when choosing an editor
Platform and workflow
Choose iMovie or Final Cut Pro if you work exclusively on Apple hardware and value Apple’s integrated workflow. Choose Resolve if Windows, macOS, and Linux support matters. Premiere and PowerDirector are the more flexible mainstream choices for Windows and Mac users.
4K, 8K, and camera formats
4K support is now common, but camera-specific formats still vary. Check support for Sony XAVC/XAVC-S, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 before buying. None of the applications covered here supports H.266/VVC according to the roundup’s current comparison, but codec support is time-sensitive and worth verifying against the developer’s latest documentation.
Multicam, VR, and spatial video
PowerDirector, Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and Resolve are the strongest multicamera choices. For 360-degree work, PowerDirector stands out for stabilization and motion tracking, while Final Cut Pro can remove the camera and tripod from 360-degree footage. For Apple Vision Pro projects, use Final Cut Pro or Resolve.
Rendering speed
Render results depend on the GPU, CPU, memory, storage, codecs, effects, and whether proxy media is enabled. In testing, a five-minute-plus output was built from seven clips ranging from 720p through 8K, with cross-dissolve transitions, then rendered to 1080p/30 using H.264 at 16 Mbps and 192-kbps audio. The test PC ran Windows 11 with an Intel Core i7-12700K, 16GB of RAM, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, and a 512GB Samsung PM9A1 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD.

- Stepless Dial with Immersive Haptic Feedback: The high-precision aluminum alloy dial spins smoothly without detents, driven by a wide-range linear motor that delivers satisfying tactile vibrations with every increment. Whether you're scrubbing through a timeline frame by frame in DaVinci Resolve, dialing in color saturation in Lightroom, or adjusting brush size in Photoshop, the haptic pulse confirms every adjustment without looking at the screen - your fingers feel the precision. Clockwise, counter-clockwise, press to confirm - one knob, infinite control
- 7 Customizable Keys & Dual Working Modes: Offline Mode stores your preset shortcuts directly on the device - plug in via Bluetooth and start editing immediately, no software required. Online Mode connects to Ulanzi Studio, where the D100H automatically detects your active application and switches key assignments on the fly: jump from DaVinci Resolve with timeline controls to Photoshop with brush and layer shortcuts without touching a single setting
- Built-In Lighting Ecosystem Control via Ulanzi Connect: The D100H isn't just an editing controller - it's a bridge to your entire Ulanzi lighting setup and smart home lights. Through the Ulanzi Connect PC software, twist the dial to adjust brightness and color temperature on K6500, VL-200Bi, VL-120C, AL60, and the full Ulanzi lighting lineup. It also supports Philips Hue smart bulbs, Nanoleaf panels, and Govee lights - adjust your room ambiance for late-night editing sessions without reaching for your phone
- 1000mAh Battery - 60 Days Standby, Zero Cable Clutter: A full charge gives you approximately 2.5 hours of continuous dial operation and up to 60 days of standby power. Bluetooth BLE 5.0 keeps your desk cable-free with a stable connection up to 33 ft (10m), and you can pair up to 3 devices (PC, Mac, iPad) to switch between editing stations instantly. Type-C charging gets you from 0 to 100% in about 2.5 hours. No drivers, no dongles, no cables snaking across your desk - just pure, uninterrupted creative flow
- Beginner-Friendly, Pro-Capable: Built for creators who are diving into video editing and color grading for the first time, the D100H strips away complexity without stripping away power. Pre-configured presets for CapCut, DaVinci Resolve, and Adobe Lightroom get you editing within minutes of unboxing. As you grow, Ulanzi Studio's drag-and-drop customization lets you build multi-step macros, assign complex shortcut chains to a single twist, and download community presets and icon packs. It's the editing controller that grows with you - not the one you outgrow in a month
That test is useful for comparing applications under consistent conditions, not for predicting the exact export time on your computer. Proxy files and GPU acceleration can change the result considerably.
Free alternatives
If none of the main choices fits your budget, Shotcut, Kdenlive, and OpenShot are free, open-source alternatives. Shotcut supports chroma keying and picture-in-picture. Kdenlive, OpenShot, Lightworks, and Shotcut run on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Lightworks is another option, but its free edition has historically limited output to 720p. Because licensing and output limits can change, check the current Lightworks plan details before choosing it for a 1080p or 4K project.
