Cognition, the company behind the AI coding agent Devin, announced a definitive agreement to acquire Windsurf on July 14, 2025. The deal covered Windsurf’s intellectual property, product, trademark, brand, business, and employees. Cognition did not disclose a purchase price.
The transaction has since moved beyond an acquisition of a separate coding editor. On June 2, 2026, Cognition rebranded Windsurf as Devin Desktop, making it the desktop front end for a broader Devin product family.

Cognition said the agreement included Windsurf’s:
- Intellectual property
- Product
- Trademark and brand
- Business
- Employees
At the time of the announcement, Cognition reported that Windsurf had reached $82 million in annual recurring revenue, with enterprise ARR doubling quarter over quarter. It also reported more than 350 enterprise customers and hundreds of thousands of daily active users.

Those figures were company-reported. Cognition did not announce how much it paid for the acquisition.
The leadership detail that is often misstated
Cognition did not acquire Windsurf’s original executive team as a group. Shortly before Cognition’s announcement, Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and research leaders joined Google in a separate transaction.
Cognition acquired the remaining Windsurf team and assets. It separately said that 100% of Windsurf employees would participate financially, that vesting cliffs would be waived for work completed to that point, and that vesting for work completed to that point would be fully accelerated.
What happened to the Windsurf brand?
Immediately after the July 2025 announcement, Cognition said Windsurf would continue operating as a standalone business and product. That description is now outdated.

What replaces Cascade?
Devin Local replaced Cascade as the primary local agent. Cognition says Devin Local was rewritten in Rust, retains Cascade’s capabilities and settings, and is up to 30% more token-efficient. It also supports newer features, including subagents.

The migration period allowed users to continue using the legacy Cascade agent through July 1, 2026. That deadline has passed as of August 7, 2026. The launch announcement does not say that legacy Cascade support continued after that date, so users should not plan on Cascade remaining available as the supported local agent.
How Devin Desktop fits into Cognition’s product line
The renamed application is one part of a unified Devin product family:

The distinction between local and cloud agents is important. A local agent runs on the user’s machine and within the active session. It stops when the laptop is closed. Devin Cloud runs in Cognition’s infrastructure and can continue working for minutes or hours, open pull requests, run tests, and perform quality-assurance tasks using computer vision.
The Agent Command Center and Spaces
Devin Desktop’s default surface is the Agent Command Center. It provides a single Kanban-style view for managing local and cloud agents instead of forcing users to track each task in a separate editor or browser window.
The application also introduces Spaces. A Space groups related sessions, pull requests, files, and context. That context can be shared between agents, allowing a local agent and a cloud agent—or multiple agents working on related tasks—to operate with a common project history.
Cognition has not published a complete, verified set of button-by-button instructions or exact settings-menu paths for these features in the cited launch materials. Users should therefore rely on the controls shown in their installed version rather than follow unofficial instructions that claim a particular menu path.
Support for other coding agents
Devin Desktop is not limited to Cognition’s own agents. At launch, it supported the Agent Client Protocol (ACP) and named Codex, Claude Agent, OpenCode, and other ACP-compatible agents as supported options.

These third-party agents can appear in the same Kanban view, run inside Spaces, and share context with other agents. That makes Devin Desktop closer to an agent-management layer around a full development environment than a traditional editor with one AI assistant attached.
How Devin and Windsurf were integrated before the rebrand
Before the Devin Desktop name arrived, Cognition had already begun combining the two products. In its April 15, 2026 announcement about “Devin in Windsurf,” Cognition described Windsurf 2.0 as a workflow in which a developer could work locally in Windsurf, send a plan to Devin with one click, and have Devin implement the task on its own machine.
The developer could then review Devin’s pull request inside Windsurf. This arrangement separated the immediate, interactive work of a local editor from the longer-running work performed by Devin Cloud.
- Developers work on or plan a change locally.
- They send the plan to Devin Cloud.
- Devin implements the change in its own environment.
- Devin runs tests and performs additional checks.
- The developer reviews the resulting pull request in the desktop environment.
The later Devin Desktop launch unified this direction under one brand and placed local and cloud agents in the same command center.
Why the acquisition mattered to Cognition
Windsurf gave Cognition an established developer product, a large user base, enterprise relationships, and an IDE-oriented workflow. Devin, by contrast, was primarily associated with an autonomous agent that could take on longer-running software tasks.
Combining the two lets Cognition cover several stages of development:

It also gives Cognition a way to place multiple agents—including competitors’ ACP-compatible agents—inside one workspace. The strategic goal is not merely to preserve Windsurf’s editor; it is to make the editor the control surface for a wider agent ecosystem.

One year later
In its July 14, 2026 retrospective, Cognition said the companies had unified under one brand through the launch of Devin Desktop. It also said Windsurf 2.0 had brought agents into a single command center.
Cognition reported that the combined company had grown from 44 to 350 employees and that its revenue run rate had increased from $73 million to more than $500 million since the brands merged. These are Cognition’s own figures and were not independently audited in the cited retrospective.
