WhatsApp polls are not anonymous: anyone viewing the poll’s vote details can see which participants selected each option. Create the poll from the device you are using below.
1. Create a WhatsApp poll on Android
- Open WhatsApp and enter the group where you want to post the poll.
- Tap the paperclip attachment icon beside the message field.
- Tap Poll.
- Enter the question in the Ask a question or Question field.
- Add the answer choices. A native WhatsApp poll needs at least two options and supports up to 12.
- If the choices are in the wrong order, drag them using the handles when they are shown.
- Leave Allow multiple answers enabled if participants can choose several options. Turn it off if each person must select only one.
- Tap the Send button or send arrow.
After posting, the poll appears as a message in the group. Vote totals update as members respond.
2. Create a WhatsApp poll on iPhone
- Open the WhatsApp group that should receive the poll.
- Tap the + button next to the message box.
- Select Poll.
- Type the question in Ask a question or the question field.
- Enter between two and 12 answer options.
- Check the Allow multiple answers setting. Keep it on for a multi-select poll, or turn it off for one choice per participant.
- Tap Send.
With multiple answers disabled, selecting a different option replaces the participant’s earlier selection rather than adding another vote.

3. Create a WhatsApp poll in WhatsApp Web
- Go to web.whatsapp.com and link the browser session to your WhatsApp account if prompted.
- Open the target group from the chat list.
- Click the paperclip attachment icon or the + icon beside the message field.
- Click Poll.
- Fill in the question and add the answer choices.
- Set Allow multiple answers according to how you want people to vote.
- Click Send.
WhatsApp Web normally synchronizes the poll through your linked account. If it does not appear, refresh the browser tab and check that the Web session is still connected.
4. Create a WhatsApp poll in the Windows or macOS app
- Open the WhatsApp desktop application.
- Select the group where you want to add the poll.
- Click the attachment icon or + beside the message field.
- Select Poll.
- Enter the question and add two to 12 options.
- Turn Allow multiple answers on or off.
- Click Send.
The desktop app uses the same native poll format as WhatsApp on mobile and Web. It does not require a separate survey service or poll command.
Choose the right poll setting

Write the question so the voting rule is clear. For example, add “Choose one” when multiple answers are disabled, or “Select all that apply” when they are enabled.
How to see who voted
Open the poll in the group and tap or click View votes below it. WhatsApp shows the vote count for each option and the participants who selected it. This means native WhatsApp polls should not be used when responses need to be confidential.

Can you edit or close a WhatsApp poll?
No. WhatsApp locks the question and answer options after the poll is sent. Native polls also have no built-in expiry time or Close poll button.
If you made a mistake, try to remove the original poll and post a corrected one:
- On a phone, long-press the poll.
- On WhatsApp Web or the desktop app, right-click the poll.
- Choose Delete, then Delete for everyone if that option is available.
- Create and send a replacement poll.
Delete for everyone is time-limited and may not be available in every situation. If WhatsApp only offers deletion for you, send a new poll and clearly label the old one as invalid. Since there is no automatic closing feature, you can also post a group message stating when voting ends and ignore later responses.
What to do when Poll is missing
Update WhatsApp
An outdated mobile or desktop build can lack the Poll entry or fail to interact correctly with a poll. Update WhatsApp through the appropriate app store or desktop distribution channel, then reopen the group.

Refresh or relink WhatsApp Web
If Poll is missing in the browser, refresh web.whatsapp.com. If the session is stale or disconnected, log out and link WhatsApp Web again from the WhatsApp app.
Check group permissions
In an announcement-only or otherwise restricted group, ordinary members may not be allowed to send messages. Because a poll is a message, those members generally cannot create one. Ask an administrator to change the group’s messaging permission or post the poll themselves.
Check synchronization
A poll sent on one device may take a moment to appear on another. Confirm that both devices are connected and that the Web or desktop session is current. Refreshing or relinking a stale session can resolve a missing poll.
Split polls with more than 12 choices
WhatsApp’s native limit is 12 answer options. If your list is longer, split it into multiple polls—for example, one poll for shortlisted dates and another for locations—or use a dedicated survey tool.

Practical tips for better group polls
- Ask one question at a time. Avoid combining unrelated decisions in one poll.
- Make choices distinct. Overlapping options produce ambiguous results.
- Include a fallback choice. Options such as “Other” or “None of these” can prevent misleading totals.
- State the deadline in the group message. The poll itself cannot expire automatically.
- Remember that votes are visible. Do not use a WhatsApp poll for sensitive or anonymous feedback.
- Check the multiple-answer setting before sending. It cannot be changed after posting.

Can I edit a WhatsApp poll after sending it?
No. The question and options cannot be edited after posting. Delete the poll for everyone when WhatsApp offers that option, then create a replacement.
Do WhatsApp polls automatically close?
No. Native polls have no automatic expiry timer or Close poll control. Post a deadline in the group and remove the poll later if appropriate.
Why can’t I create a poll in a WhatsApp group?
Update WhatsApp, check that the group allows you to send messages, and refresh or relink WhatsApp Web if you are using a browser. Announcement-only groups may restrict poll creation to members permitted to post.
