If pressing Alt behaves like the Windows key, and pressing the Windows key behaves like Alt, the two modifiers have probably been remapped. The most reliable Windows fix is to use Microsoft PowerToys to create a two-way swap:
- Left Alt → Left Win
- Left Win → Left Alt
Both mappings are necessary. Creating only one mapping changes one key and leaves the other without its original behavior.
First, confirm that the keys are actually swapped
Before changing Windows settings, test whether this is a remap or a keyboard-specific problem.
- Press Win by itself. If it opens the Start menu, the Windows key is probably still working normally.
- Press Alt by itself, then try Alt+Tab. If the result is unexpected, continue testing.
- Open an on-screen keyboard by pressing Win+Ctrl+O, or search Windows for On-Screen Keyboard.
- Test the physical keys against the on-screen keyboard. If an external keyboard is affected but the laptop keyboard is not, the problem may be in the keyboard firmware, a keyboard utility, or a physical switch rather than Windows.
If both keyboards show the same reversed behavior, or the problem began after installing a keyboard utility, a software remap is the more likely cause.

Fix the Alt and Windows key swap with PowerToys
Microsoft’s supported method is Keyboard Manager in PowerToys. PowerToys supports Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 (20H1, build 19041) or newer on x64 and ARM64 systems.
1. Install Microsoft PowerToys
The simplest installation method is WinGet. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt and run:
winget install --id Microsoft.PowerToys --source winget
You can also install PowerToys from the Microsoft Store or its official installation sources. Start PowerToys after installation and allow it to run in the background.
2. Open Keyboard Manager
- Open PowerToys Settings.
- Select Keyboard Manager in the left sidebar.
- Make sure Enable Keyboard Manager is turned on.
- Select Remap a key.
On recent PowerToys installations, the remapping window may use the redesigned WinUI 3 editor. Since PowerToys 0.100, new installations use that editor by default. If the layout differs from older instructions, look for the controls named Select, To send, and Add key remapping. You can switch editors with the Use the new editor setting in Keyboard Manager.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Add the first direction
- Select Add key remapping.
- In the first Select field, choose Left Alt.
- In the To send field, choose Left Win.
The row should read:
| Physical key | Mapped output |
|---|---|
| Left Alt | Left Win |
4. Add the reverse direction
- Select Add key remapping again.
- Set the first field to Left Win.
- Set the To send field to Left Alt.
You should now have this complete pair:
| Physical key | Mapped output |
|---|---|
| Left Alt | Left Win |
| Left Win | Left Alt |
- Select OK to apply the changes.
The swap should work immediately. A Windows restart is not required.

Important: PowerToys must keep running
Keyboard Manager is not a permanent firmware change. PowerToys must remain running in the background and Keyboard Manager must stay enabled. If you exit PowerToys, disable Keyboard Manager, or prevent PowerToys from starting, the remapping stops.
To make the fix persist after signing in, open PowerToys Settings → General and enable the option to start PowerToys at startup, if it is not already enabled.
How to undo the swap
There are two quick rollback methods:
- Open PowerToys Settings → Keyboard Manager, turn off Enable Keyboard Manager, and select OK if prompted.
- Close PowerToys completely from its notification-area icon.
To remove only the swap, return to Keyboard Manager → Remap a key, delete the two mapping rows, and apply the change.

PowerToys is not running
Check the notification area near the clock for the PowerToys icon. Reopen PowerToys and confirm that Keyboard Manager is enabled.
The affected program is running as administrator
A normal PowerToys process cannot remap keys inside an application running with elevated privileges. If the affected program was opened with Run as administrator, close PowerToys, right-click PowerToys, select Run as administrator, and test again.

- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.

This does not make the remap work on Windows sign-in or password screens. Keyboard Manager does not operate at the Windows sign-in screen, and it also does not remap protected credential interfaces.
Another keyboard utility is intercepting the keys
Keyboard software from manufacturers, macro tools, accessibility utilities, remote-desktop software, and other keyboard-hook applications can conflict with Keyboard Manager. Microsoft’s documented workaround is to disable Keyboard Manager and then enable it again. If that does not help, temporarily exit other keyboard-hook software and test.
The wrong modifier was selected
Check that the rows specifically use Left Alt and Left Win. Do not accidentally select Right Alt or Right Win unless those are the keys you intend to swap. The left and right modifier keys are separate inputs.
The keyboard has its own hardware mode
Some gaming and mechanical keyboards can change key assignments in onboard memory or through their configuration app. Look for a profile, Windows/Mac mode switch, remapping layer, or factory-reset option. If the issue follows one physical keyboard while another keyboard works normally, PowerToys may not be the original cause.
Limitations you should know before using this fix
- It is global by default: the mapping applies to every application while Keyboard Manager is active.
- It cannot be different for each physical keyboard: the same mapping applies to a laptop keyboard and an attached keyboard.
- Modifier keys can affect special behavior: remapping Win, Ctrl, Alt, or Shift can interfere with gestures, shortcuts, or other special keys.
- AltGr can be affected: Windows treats AltGr as Left Ctrl plus Right Alt. Modifier remaps can therefore produce unexpected characters or break AltGr input.
- Games are not a good target: Microsoft warns that keyboard interception may affect game performance, including FPS, and some games use keyboard APIs that do not work with Keyboard Manager.
- Reserved shortcuts remain reserved: Keyboard Manager cannot remap Win+L or Ctrl+Alt+Delete. The Fn key also generally cannot be remapped.
Do not try to fix this by changing the keyboard language
Changing from English to French, German, or another Windows input layout changes character input, not the identity of modifier keys. A Keyboard Manager remap continues to apply after the input language changes. Layout switching will not restore Alt and Win to their original functions.

App-specific remapping: only if the swap happens in one program
If the problem is limited to a particular application, use PowerToys Settings → Keyboard Manager → Remap a shortcut rather than creating a global mapping. Leave the target application blank for a global shortcut; otherwise enter the application’s process name.
Use the executable name, not the name shown in the Start menu. For example, Microsoft Edge uses msedge or msedge.exe, not Microsoft Edge. To find a process name, run:
tasklist
Or use PowerShell:
Get-Process
tasklist displays the executable in the Image Name column. PowerShell normally shows the process name without the .exe extension.
When PowerToys is not the right solution
If the keys are reversed before Windows loads, in the keyboard’s BIOS/UEFI menu, or on multiple computers, the keyboard may have a hardware-level remap or a Windows/Mac mode switch enabled. Consult the keyboard manufacturer’s configuration software or reset the keyboard profile.
If the problem affects only one computer and began after a third-party remapper was installed, remove or disable that utility before adding PowerToys. Running two remappers at once makes the final output difficult to predict.

FAQ
Why are my Alt and Windows keys swapped?
The most common cause is a key remapping in PowerToys, keyboard configuration software, or the keyboard’s own hardware profile. A Windows/Mac mode switch can also exchange modifier behavior on some keyboards.
Do I need to restart Windows after swapping the keys in PowerToys?
No. Select OK in the Keyboard Manager remapping window and the change should take effect immediately.
Why do I need two key mappings?
A swap requires both directions: Left Alt to Left Win and Left Win to Left Alt. Mapping only one direction changes one key and leaves the other key orphaned or unchanged.
Will the Alt and Win swap work at the Windows login screen?
No. Keyboard Manager does not operate on the Windows sign-in screen or other password screens.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I swap Alt and Win on only one keyboard?
No. Keyboard Manager applies the mapping to input generally and cannot maintain separate mappings for different physical keyboards.
Can changing the Windows keyboard language fix the problem?
No. Input-language layouts affect characters and multilingual typing; they do not restore the original identities of remapped modifier keys.
The Bottom Line
Use PowerToys Settings → Keyboard Manager → Remap a key and create both mappings: Left Alt → Left Win and Left Win → Left Alt. Select OK; no restart is needed. Keep PowerToys running, and remember that elevated applications, sign-in screens, games, AltGr, and other keyboard-hook software can limit or interfere with the result.
