Microsoft Edge WebView2 allows Windows and third-party applications to display web content using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Windows Widgets, Teams, Office, Outlook, Weather, Windows Search, and many other applications can use it. The steps below separate normal WebView2 behavior from actual installation, update, performance, and security problems.
First, identify what is actually failing
msedgewebview2.exe is not the ordinary Microsoft Edge browser process. It is the executable for the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, which applications embed to display web-based interfaces.
Seeing several copies in Task Manager is normally expected. WebView2 uses a Chromium-style multi-process design. Depending on the application, you may see a manager process, renderer processes, GPU and network processes, utility processes, and Crashpad processes.

On Windows 11:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Check the Processes tab to see which application is using WebView2.
- Open the Details tab and look for
msedgewebview2.exe.
The Details tab groups WebView2 processes by executable rather than clearly assigning every process to its parent application. Therefore, multiple entries alone do not indicate malware or a damaged installation. High CPU or memory use is also often caused by the host application rendering poorly optimized web content.
1. Restart Windows and close WebView2 applications
Restart Windows before attempting an update, reinstall, rollback, or repair. A restart can clear a pending-restart state, release locked runtime files, and reset Windows Installer and related update services.
After Windows starts again, close applications that may be hosting WebView2, including:
- Microsoft Edge
- Microsoft Teams
- new Outlook
- Windows Widgets
- Office applications
- the application showing the error
- custom business or line-of-business applications
Open Task Manager and confirm that no msedge.exe or msedgewebview2.exe processes remain before retrying an installer. End a remaining process only when necessary—for example, when an installer reports that files are in use. Ending every WebView2 process is not a general repair and may simply cause the host application to reopen them.
2. Install pending Windows 11 updates
WebView2 and its host applications can fail when Windows is waiting for an update or restart. Use the current Windows 11 path:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not use the older Settings > Update & security path in Windows 11; that wording belongs to older Windows versions.

3. Repair the application that is consuming WebView2
If only one application is crashing or displaying a blank panel, the host application may be the real source of the problem. Microsoft notes that WebView2 resource use is commonly related to how the host application uses the runtime.
Look for a repair option for the affected application:

- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair before trying Reset.
The exact controls depend on the application. Resetting can remove local application data, so use it only after repair and after confirming that important data is synchronized or backed up.
4. Repair Microsoft Edge when Edge itself is the failing host
Microsoft documents this repair path for the Microsoft Edge browser:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge.
- Select Modify.
- Choose Repair and approve the User Account Control prompt.
This is an Edge repair procedure, not a guaranteed WebView2 Runtime repair. It may help when Edge is the application failing, but reinstalling the full Edge browser is not automatically equivalent to reinstalling WebView2.
5. Reinstall WebView2 from Microsoft
Use Microsoft’s official WebView2 download page rather than a third-party download site. The page provides these distribution choices:

Most Windows applications use the Evergreen distribution, which updates automatically. Fixed Version is intended for applications that require a pinned runtime and should not be substituted casually.
Before launching the installer:
- Restart Windows.
- Close Edge, Teams, Outlook, Widgets, and other WebView2 host applications.
- In Task Manager, verify that
msedge.exeandmsedgewebview2.exeare closed. - Make sure the system drive, normally
C:, has at least 1–2 GB of free space. - Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the UAC prompt and allow the installation to finish.
Microsoft’s official WebView2 page does not define a universal Windows 11 command-line repair command. Avoid treating commands copied from forums as Microsoft-supported repair procedures unless they have been separately verified for the specific installer and version.
6. Check security software and company policies
An installer can be valid and still fail because endpoint protection or an organization policy blocks part of the operation. Microsoft lists permission restrictions, network or TLS failures, security-software interference, corrupted system components, and leftover installation artifacts among the causes of WebView2 installation and update failures.
Security products can interfere by blocking:
- installer execution
- replacement of runtime files
- service registration
- scheduled-task creation
- WebView2 child processes
- Crashpad report writes
- TLS connections to Microsoft update services
Blocking renderer, GPU, network, or Crashpad child processes can leave the main WebView2 process running while the application remains blank or frozen. DLL injection into renderer or GPU processes can also cause Chromium renderer crashes.
On a managed computer, ask the administrator to check GPO, MDM, WDAC, AppLocker, DLP, application-control, and endpoint-protection logs. Security rules should preferably use publisher-based allow rules. If a temporary test exclusion is necessary, it should be narrowly scoped to the WebView2 runtime binaries and the affected application’s user-data folder—not a broad system-wide exclusion.
Do not change the runtime’s default ACLs or Low Integrity permissions. Sandboxed renderer processes require Low Integrity read-and-execute access, and modifying those permissions can cause startup or rendering failures.

7. Test the network, VPN, and proxy path
WebView2 Evergreen updates need to reach Microsoft services. Temporarily disconnect a VPN and retry if the installer or download returns a 403; Microsoft identifies VPN blocking as a possible cause of download failures.

Also check whether TLS interception, an invalid system clock, DNS filtering, or a proxy is preventing certificate validation or name resolution. A download that works on an unrestricted connection but fails on the company network is evidence for an environment or policy problem rather than a damaged executable.
8. Match the installer error to the likely cause

9. Find the logs when reinstalling does not work
Use the log that matches the installation type:

- Run
Procmon.exe. - Select the capture icon to stop the initial capture.
- Select Edit > Clear Display.
- Enable File System, Registry, Process/Thread, and Network.
- Start capture again and reproduce the installation failure.
- Stop capture, then select File > Save.
- Choose All events and Native Process Monitor Format (PML).
10. Check Edge policy on managed systems
If the computer belongs to a company or school, export the active Edge policies before escalating the issue:
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Go to
edge://policy. - Select Export to JSON.
- Save the policy file for the administrator or support team.
A policy can prevent updates even when the WebView2 installer itself is intact. This is especially likely when installation repeatedly rolls back, silently fails, or succeeds without changing the installed version.
What not to do
- Do not assume that several
msedgewebview2.exeprocesses are malware or proof of a broken runtime. - Do not kill every WebView2 process as a permanent fix.
- Do not delete WebView2 registry keys or change
NoRemove/NoRepairvalues. - Do not manually rename or forcibly delete runtime folders.
- Do not use a random fixed-version runtime when the application expects Evergreen.
- Do not apply broad antivirus exclusions to the entire system.
- Do not confuse repairing Microsoft Edge with repairing the WebView2 Runtime.
FAQ
Is msedgewebview2.exe safe on Windows 11?
It is the normal executable for Microsoft Edge WebView2, a runtime used by Windows, Microsoft, and third-party applications. Its presence alone does not prove that the file is malicious or unnecessary. If you suspect tampering, verify the file’s publisher and investigate the application that launched it rather than deleting the runtime.
Why are there so many WebView2 processes in Task Manager?
WebView2 uses separate processes for functions such as rendering, graphics, networking, utilities, and crash reporting. Multiple entries are normal. High resource use should be investigated alongside the host application, because the application’s web content may be responsible.
