Windows lets you customize several kinds of icons, but no single setting replaces every icon throughout the operating system. Use Desktop Icon Settings for common system icons, a shortcut’s Properties for that shortcut, Folder Properties for one folder, or the Registry for a file type. These methods apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; use an .ico file or an .exe or .dll that contains icons.
Change the main Windows desktop icons
This changes only the common system icons displayed on the desktop. It does not replace icons throughout File Explorer, the Start menu, or every application.
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select Personalize.
- Open Themes.
- Select Desktop icon settings.
- Click the icon you want to change, such as This PC or Recycle Bin.
- Select Change Icon….
- Select an icon from the list, or choose Browse… and locate an
.ico,.exe, or.dllfile. - Select OK, then OK again.
Use the checkboxes in the same dialog to show or hide This PC, Recycle Bin, Network, or User’s Files.
Prevent themes from replacing your icons
Desktop themes can overwrite custom system icons. In Desktop Icon Settings, clear Allow themes to change desktop icons if you want your choices to remain in place when switching themes. This option is enabled by default.

Change the icon for a desktop shortcut
A shortcut is the simplest way to give an application, file, folder, or website a custom desktop icon. Changing it affects the shortcut only. It does not alter the original program, file, or folder.
Create a shortcut from the desktop
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select New > Shortcut.
- Enter or browse to the target. The wizard accepts an application, file, folder, or web address.
- Select Next, enter a name, and select Finish.
- Right-click the new shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Change Icon….
- Choose an icon, or select Browse… to locate your icon file.
- Select OK, then OK again.
Send an existing file or folder to the desktop
- Open File Explorer and find the file or folder.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Show more options > Send to > Desktop (create shortcut). On some installations, choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut) directly.
- Right-click the resulting desktop shortcut, select Properties > Shortcut > Change Icon…, and choose the replacement.
Deleting this desktop shortcut removes only the shortcut, not the target application or file.
Create a custom shortcut for a Start-menu application
- Open Start > All.
- Find the application and drag it from the Start menu to the desktop.
- Right-click the new shortcut and open Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Change Icon….
Change the icon for one folder
Windows supports changing individual folder icons, but it has no supported built-in setting for replacing the standard folder icon globally in File Explorer.
- Right-click the folder and select Properties.
- Open the Customize tab.
- Select Change Icon….
- Choose an icon and select OK, then OK again.
If the dialog does not offer a useful selection, select Browse…. In the File name box, enter:
C:\Windows\System\shell32.dll
Select Open, choose an icon from the list, and select OK twice. This setting applies to that folder, not every folder on the computer. Folder customization may also be represented by a desktop.ini file, but that remains a per-folder mechanism.
Assign an icon to a file type
To change the icon for files based on their extension, such as all files ending in .myp, edit the file type’s DefaultIcon Registry entry. This is more powerful than changing one shortcut, but it is also easier to break. Back up the Registry before editing it.

Registry locations
For an extension, the key is:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.extension\DefaultIcon
For example:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.myp\DefaultIcon
If the extension is associated with a ProgID and you want to set the icon for that application-specific file type, use:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ProgID\DefaultIcon
What the DefaultIcon value must contain
The unnamed default value must be a REG_SZ string containing the full path to an icon-bearing file. Windows accepts an .ico, .exe, or .dll file.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a standalone icon:
C:\Icons\document.ico
If the file contains several icons, append a comma and the icon index:
C:\MyDir\MyProgram.exe,2
Use this approach only when you specifically need to change icons for a file extension. Registry mistakes can affect file associations or other shell behavior. Microsoft documents SHChangeNotify as the refresh mechanism after changing a file-type icon; there is no universal Command Prompt command that replaces that Shell API call.
Choose the right customization method
| What you want to change | Use this method | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| This PC, Recycle Bin, Network, or User’s Files | Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings | That system desktop icon |
| One application, file, folder, or website on the desktop | Shortcut Properties > Shortcut > Change Icon… | That shortcut only |
| One folder in File Explorer | Folder Properties > Customize > Change Icon… | That folder only |
| Every file with an extension | Registry: extension or ProgID > DefaultIcon | That registered file type |
| Every normal File Explorer folder | No supported built-in global setting | Not available through standard Windows settings |
Fix blank or unchanged icons
A shortcut can continue launching normally while its icon appears blank. Microsoft identifies the icon cache and the shortcut’s IconHandler Registry entry as possible causes.
Reset the icon cache
Save open work first. The following procedure stops and restarts Windows Explorer.

Check the desktop and Start menu after Explorer returns. If blank shortcut icons remain, Microsoft’s documented checks are under:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile\shellex\IconHandler
Verify the default value of that key, then inspect the referenced CLSID key. Its default value should be Shortcut, and its InProcServer32 default value should be:
C:\Windows\System32\windows.storage.dll
Do not change these Registry values casually. Export the relevant key first and use Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance if the values are missing or different.

When a custom folder icon disappears after a security update
For Windows security updates released on or after June 9, 2026, Windows may ignore a desktop.ini file when it cannot establish that the file came from a trusted source. This can make a custom folder icon disappear or make a localized folder name revert to its original name. The folder and its contents remain accessible.
This is particularly relevant to folders containing:

- Internet-downloaded files carrying Mark-of-the-Web (MOTW)
- Content copied from some WebDAV or HTTP-based locations
- Network paths not classified as intranet or trusted by zone policy
For trusted internal content, Microsoft’s preferred fix is to add the source to Trusted Sites. For a trusted local file carrying MOTW, remove the mark with PowerShell:
Unblock-File "C:\Your\Folder\Path\desktop.ini"
To unblock every desktop.ini file below a trusted folder:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGet-ChildItem "C:\Your\Folder\Path" -Recurse -Filter desktop.ini -Force | Unblock-File
Only do this for content you trust. Removing MOTW also removes its associated security protection.
There is also a Group Policy setting at Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer > Allow the use of remote paths in file shortcut icons. Enabling it reduces protection against malicious remote customization content, so it is a policy decision rather than a general repair step.

Why is Change Icon missing from a shortcut’s Properties?
You may be looking at the target file or application rather than a Windows shortcut. Create a shortcut first, then open its Properties and use the Shortcut tab. The Change Icon button is available for supported shortcuts.
Will changing a shortcut icon change the application’s icon everywhere?
No. It changes only that shortcut. Other shortcuts to the same application and the application’s own icon remain unchanged.
Can I change the default icon for every folder?
Not through a supported built-in Windows setting. You can customize individual folders through Properties > Customize > Change Icon…, or customize folder presentation with per-folder desktop.ini data.
Why does my custom icon show as blank?
The icon cache may be stale or the shortcut’s IconHandler registration may be damaged. Restart Explorer and reset IconCache.db using the documented Task Manager and Command Prompt procedure. A broken or inaccessible icon file can also cause the problem.
Is it safe to edit DefaultIcon in the Registry?
It can work, but incorrect Registry edits may affect file associations or Windows shell behavior. Back up the Registry first, use the exact extension or ProgID path, and enter a fully qualified path to an .ico, .exe, or .dll file.
Why did a folder icon stop appearing after a June 2026 Windows update?
Windows security updates released on or after June 9, 2026 may ignore desktop.ini files from untrusted Internet, WebDAV, HTTP, or network sources. For content you trust, use Microsoft’s Trusted Sites guidance or unblock the specific desktop.ini file.
The Bottom Line
Use Desktop icon settings for the four common system icons, Shortcut Properties > Change Icon… for individual desktop shortcuts, and Folder Properties > Customize for one folder. Changing icons for an entire file type requires the Registry, while replacing every normal File Explorer folder icon is not supported by Windows’ standard settings. If a valid customization turns blank, reset the icon cache before assuming the icon file or shortcut is damaged.
