Microsoft Edge can show website alerts in the lower-right corner of the desktop and in the Windows notification center, even when Edge is closed. To enable them, allow notifications for the website in Edge and make sure Windows notifications are enabled.
The current Edge path is Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All sites. The older Cookies and site permissions path is not the one documented in Microsoft’s current instructions.
Enable notifications for a website in Microsoft Edge
Use this method when you know which website should be allowed to send notifications.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services.
- Under Site permissions, select All sites.
- Select the website that should be allowed to send notifications.
- Find Notifications.
- Open its dropdown menu and select Allow.
Return to the website and use its notification option again if necessary. Choosing Allow resubscribes the site to notifications. Website notifications can appear even when Microsoft Edge is closed.

Allow notifications from the current website
If the website is already open, the address-bar shortcut is quicker:
- Open the website in Edge.
- Select View site information, the icon immediately to the left of the address bar.
- Under Permissions for this site, find Notifications.
- Set the permission to Allow.
If you previously selected Block, this changes the permission without requiring you to wait for the prompt to appear again.
Turn on Windows notifications
Edge can have permission to send website alerts while Windows is still suppressing notifications. Check the system-wide setting in Windows 11 or Windows 10:

- Select Start > Settings.
- Open System > Notifications.
- Turn the main Notifications switch On.
On Windows 10, the same notification controls are available, although the notification area is commonly called Action Center. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.
Check Edge’s Windows notification settings
Windows also provides notification controls for individual apps. On the System > Notifications page, look under Notifications from apps and other senders and select the relevant Microsoft Edge entry if it is listed.
Check these settings:
- Notifications or the app’s main notification switch is on.
- Show notification banners is enabled if you want alerts to appear as pop-up banners.
- Show notifications in notification center is enabled if you want to find them after the banner disappears.
- Play a sound is enabled if you want an audible alert.
- The notification priority is not preventing the alert from appearing where you expect.
The exact controls can vary slightly between Windows 11 and Windows 10, but Microsoft documents these notification settings for both operating systems.

Turn off Do Not Disturb
Windows Do not disturb can silence notification banners even when Edge and the website are correctly configured. Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications and check whether Do not disturb is enabled.
When it is active, only alarms, reminders, and apps permitted by your priority settings appear as banners. Other notifications are sent to the notification center instead. Windows can also enable Do not disturb automatically under conditions such as:

Disable it temporarily, or adjust its automatic rules and priority settings, then test the website again.
Where to find the notification
Website alerts normally appear in the lower-right corner of the desktop and in the Windows notification center.
- Windows 11: Select the clock or notification-bell icon on the taskbar, or press Windows key + N.
- Windows 10: Select the notification button on the taskbar, or press Windows key + A.
If a banner was dismissed or suppressed by Do not disturb, check the notification center before assuming Edge did not send it.
Notifications are not pop-ups
Allowing website notifications does not enable pop-ups. These are separate Edge permissions:

If a website needs both features, configure both permissions separately. Changing the pop-up setting will not resubscribe a website to notifications.
What to check if notifications still do not appear
- Confirm the exact site permission. In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All sites. Select the site and verify that Notifications is set to Allow.
- Check Windows’ main switch. Go to Start > Settings > System > Notifications and ensure notifications are on.
- Check Edge under app notifications. Make sure banners or notification-center delivery have not been disabled for Edge.
- Check Do not disturb. Look for an active schedule or automatic trigger. If it is enabled, review priority settings or turn it off for testing.
- Use the notification center. The alert may have been delivered there without showing a banner.
- Re-enable the permission from the site. Set the site to Allow using the address-bar View site information control, then return to the site and enable its own notification subscription.
No command-line syntax or Edge URL is required. Microsoft’s documented procedure uses Edge’s Settings menus, the address-bar site-information control, and Windows Settings.

FAQ
Why is the Notifications option missing or still set to Block in Edge?
Open the website, select the site-information icon to the left of the address bar, and look under Permissions for this site. Set Notifications to Allow. You can also use Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All sites, select the website, and change Notifications to Allow.

Will Edge website notifications work when Edge is closed?
Yes. Microsoft states that website notifications can continue to appear when Microsoft Edge is closed, provided the site permission and Windows notification settings allow them.
Why do I receive notifications in the notification center but not as banners?
Windows may have Do not disturb enabled, or the Edge app setting may have Show notification banners disabled. Check Start > Settings > System > Notifications, then review Do not disturb and Edge’s per-app notification controls.
Are Edge notifications the same as pop-ups?
No. Notifications are desktop alerts delivered through Windows. Pop-ups open content in the current window, a new window, or another tab. Their permissions are separate.
Do I need an Edge command or URL to enable notifications?
No. The documented process uses Edge Settings or the View site information control beside the address bar, plus Windows Settings if system notifications are disabled.
