To get shaders in CurseForge, use a Minecraft: Java Edition profile with a compatible shader loader such as Iris or OptiFine, then install a compatible shader pack. With the current Iris CurseForge listing, use a Fabric, Quilt, or NeoForge profile; install the pack through CurseForge or place its ZIP in the profile’s shaderpacks folder, then enable it in Minecraft’s video settings.

Before you start

  • You need Minecraft: Java Edition. The CurseForge app currently supports Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.
  • You need a CurseForge profile with a compatible shader loader.
  • The shader loader, shader pack, Minecraft version, and modloader must be compatible with one another.

A shader pack is not a modloader or shader loader. Iris or OptiFine provides the shader-loading function; the shader pack supplies visual effects such as shadows, reflections, ambient lighting, and water animation. Iris is a current alternative to OptiFine and is designed to support existing OptiFine shader packs.

Method 1: Install a shader directly in the CurseForge app

1. Create a compatible Minecraft profile

  1. Open the Minecraft section of the CurseForge app.
  2. Click Create.
  3. Enter a profile name.
  4. Select the Minecraft version you want to use.
  5. Select a compatible modloader version.
  6. Click or open the new profile from My Modpacks.

For an Iris setup, choose a Minecraft version and loader supported by the Iris file you plan to install. The current Iris CurseForge listing supports Fabric, Quilt, and NeoForge; it does not list Forge.

Do not use a Vanilla profile for the Iris method. A Vanilla profile runs Minecraft without a modloader and does not support mods.

2. Install Iris Shaders

  1. Open the profile.
  2. Click Add More Content.
  3. Search for Iris Shaders.
  4. Click Install beside the Iris file matching your Minecraft version and modloader.

Check the file’s Minecraft version and loader before installing. A file for Fabric, for example, will not produce a working setup in a NeoForge profile.

3. Install the shader pack

  1. Return to the profile’s Add More Content screen.
  2. Open the content-type dropdown, which normally defaults to Mods.
  3. Change it to Shaders.
  4. Search for a shader pack.
  5. Click the orange Install button.
  6. Check the profile’s Shaders tab to confirm that the pack was added.

CurseForge filters available files based on the profile’s Minecraft version and loader compatibility. If a pack does not appear or cannot be installed, compare the profile settings with the shader project’s supported versions and loaders.

4. Activate the shader in Minecraft

  1. Launch the profile with Play.
  2. Open Options.
  3. Select Video Settings.
  4. Open Shader Packs. Depending on the loader and Minecraft version, this menu may be labeled Shaders.
  5. Choose the shader pack you installed.
  6. Click Apply and wait for Minecraft to reload its visual settings.

If there is no Shader Packs or Shaders menu, the launched profile may not have a functioning shader loader, or the loader may be incompatible with that profile.

Method 2: Install a shader pack manually

Use this method when the pack is not available in CurseForge or when you downloaded it from the shader author’s official website.

1. Install a shader loader

For Iris, open the profile’s Add More Content page and install the Iris file matching the profile. Iris currently supports Fabric, Quilt, and NeoForge through CurseForge.

OptiFine is another option, but its installation must match the profile’s Minecraft version. Follow the instructions for that version. The OptiFine JAR belongs in the profile’s mods folder; the shader pack does not.

2. Open the correct CurseForge profile folder

  1. Go to My Modpacks.
  2. Select the profile you will launch.
  3. Open its three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Open Folder.

This is safer than browsing to the normal vanilla .minecraft directory. CurseForge profiles use dedicated instance folders, and the active location can differ if you changed the app’s advanced installation settings.

3. Place the shader ZIP in shaderpacks

  1. Inside the profile folder, find a folder named shaderpacks.
  2. If it does not exist, create one with exactly that name.
  3. Copy the shader pack’s .zip file into it.

Leave the shader pack compressed. Do not extract the ZIP or put it in the mods folder. The loader and shader pack belong in separate folders: put the loader in mods and the shader ZIP in shaderpacks.

4. Select the manually installed pack

Launch the same CurseForge profile, then open Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs. Select the ZIP and click Apply. If the menu uses the shorter label, open Shaders instead.

Where CurseForge stores Minecraft profiles

Typical default CurseForge Minecraft modding-folder locations are:

Operating system Typical location
Windows C:\Users\[user]\curseforge\minecraft\
macOS /Users/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft/
Linux /home/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft/

These are default locations, not guaranteed paths. Individual profiles are stored within the modding environment, and the exact profile path can vary if you used Advanced setup. If you are unsure, use the profile’s three-dot menu and choose Open Folder to open the active instance.

Fix common CurseForge shader problems

The shader does not appear in Minecraft

  • Confirm that Iris or OptiFine is installed in the profile you launched.
  • Confirm that you launched the same profile containing the shader pack.
  • Check that the pack is in that profile’s shaderpacks folder.
  • Make sure the file is still a .zip, not an extracted folder.
  • Verify that the pack supports your Minecraft version and shader loader.

There is no Shaders or Shader Packs menu

A shader pack alone cannot add this menu. Install a working shader loader first. If Iris is installed, check that the Iris file matches both the profile’s Minecraft version and its loader. Make sure you did not launch a Vanilla profile or a different profile from the one you edited.

CurseForge says the shader is incompatible

Open the shader project’s version and loader filters, including All Game Versions and All Mod Loaders, then compare them with the profile. A pack built for a different Minecraft version or loader may be hidden or blocked by CurseForge.

The game crashes after enabling the shader

Shader compatibility depends on more than whether a pack is listed on CurseForge. The Minecraft version, Iris or OptiFine version, graphics driver, GPU, other rendering mods, and individual shader features can all matter.

Use this isolation sequence:

  1. Launch the profile with the shader disabled.
  2. Disable other visual or rendering mods temporarily.
  3. Install the shader file matching the exact Minecraft version.
  4. Try a different shader pack compatible with your loader.
  5. Check Iris compatibility information and the shader author’s installation notes.

The shader was placed in the Mods tab or folder

That is the wrong location for a shader pack. Put the Iris mod or OptiFine JAR in mods; put the shader pack ZIP in shaderpacks. The two files serve different purposes.

The profile is Vanilla

A Vanilla profile has no modloader and does not support mods. Because Iris is a mod, use a compatible Fabric, Quilt, or NeoForge profile for the current Iris route.

What not to do

Incorrect advice Correct approach
You must use OptiFine. Iris is a current alternative and is designed to support existing OptiFine shader packs.
Put the shader ZIP in mods. Put the loader in mods and the shader ZIP in shaderpacks.
Extract the shader ZIP. Leave standard shader packs compressed as downloaded.
Shaders work through CurseForge on Bedrock. The CurseForge Minecraft app currently supports Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.
Every Forge profile supports Iris. The current Iris CurseForge listing supports Fabric, Quilt, and NeoForge, not Forge.

FAQ

Can I install shaders in CurseForge without OptiFine?

Yes. Iris is a current shader-loader alternative to OptiFine. Install the Iris file that matches your CurseForge profile’s Minecraft version and modloader, then install a compatible shader pack.

Where do shader packs go in a CurseForge profile?

Put the shader pack’s original ZIP file in the profile’s shaderpacks folder. Use the profile’s three-dot menu and choose Open Folder to find the correct instance.

Do I unzip a Minecraft shader pack?

Usually no. Standard Iris and OptiFine shader packs should remain as ZIP files. Extracting them can stop the loader from detecting the pack.

Why can’t I see the Shader Packs menu?

The launched profile probably does not have a functioning shader loader. Install compatible Iris or OptiFine in that same profile, and avoid launching a Vanilla profile.

Can CurseForge install shaders for Minecraft Bedrock?

The current CurseForge Minecraft app documentation supports Minecraft: Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.

Can I use Iris on a Forge CurseForge profile?

The current Iris CurseForge listing supports Fabric, Quilt, and NeoForge. It does not list Forge, so use a supported loader or find a different shader-loader solution compatible with your exact Minecraft version.

The Bottom Line

For the simplest setup, create a Fabric, Quilt, or NeoForge CurseForge profile, install the matching Iris file, install a shader from Add More Content → Shaders, and enable it through Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs. For a manually downloaded pack, leave the ZIP intact and place it in that profile’s shaderpacks folder.
