Windows 11 has no universal switch to lock or disable every key on a physical keyboard. Press Windows + L to lock the PC; sign in to unlock Windows. To suppress selected keys on supported managed devices, use Keyboard Filter. If the keyboard will not respond, troubleshoot its connection, power, driver, or hardware.
How to lock a Windows 11 PC with the keyboard
Press Windows + L to lock the current Windows session and display the sign-in screen. Your applications remain open, but anyone returning to the desktop must sign in.
- Save any work if necessary.
- Press Windows + L.
- Leave the computer at the sign-in screen.
This locks Windows, not the keyboard hardware. The keyboard remains available for entering a password or PIN.
How to unlock the PC
At the Windows sign-in screen, press a key or click the screen if the sign-in fields are not visible. Sign in with an enabled method, such as your account password, PIN, security key, fingerprint, or facial recognition.

Signing in unlocks Windows and returns you to the existing desktop session. It does not re-enable a keyboard disabled through device management, blocked by Keyboard Filter, or affected by a hardware or driver problem.
Open keyboard settings in Windows 11
Press Windows + I to open Settings. To reach the keyboard accessibility options, select Accessibility > Keyboard. You can also open Accessibility settings directly with Windows + U, then select Keyboard.
These settings include options such as Filter Keys and the Print Screen shortcut. They do not provide a universal control that disables every physical keyboard key.
Filter Keys does not lock the keyboard
Filter Keys changes how Windows handles brief, repeated, or accidental keystrokes. It can help users who unintentionally press keys repeatedly, but it does not lock or disable the keyboard.

Hold the Right Shift key for eight seconds to turn Filter Keys on or off. If the keyboard seems unresponsive after using this shortcut, check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Filter Keys.
Use Keyboard Filter to block selected keys or shortcuts
Windows 11 includes Keyboard Filter for managed device-lockdown scenarios. It can suppress configured keys and key combinations on physical keyboards, the Windows on-screen keyboard, and the touch keyboard.

It is not a simple global on/off switch. Keyboard Filter must be configured for the specific keys or combinations to block. It supports predefined and custom combinations, administrator-account behavior, accessibility restrictions, and a breakout key sequence for administrative recovery.

Microsoft does not list Windows 11 Home or Pro as supported editions.
Enable Keyboard Filter through Windows Features
- Open Windows Search and type Turn Windows features on or off.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off from the results.
- Expand Device Lockdown.
- Select Keyboard Filter.
- Select OK.
- Restart the PC when Windows requests it.
Keyboard Filter is enabled after the restart. Disabling it through the same Windows Features interface also requires a restart.
Enable Keyboard Filter from an elevated Command Prompt
On a supported edition, open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
Dism /online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:Client-KeyboardFilter

Restart after the command finishes.
For a Windows IoT Enterprise device-lockdown deployment, Microsoft documents this combined command:
Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:Client-DeviceLockdown /featurename:Client-KeyboardFilter
This is an administrative deployment procedure, not a normal keyboard-lock solution for Windows 11 Home or Pro.
Example: block Ctrl+Alt+Delete
Keyboard Filter can block combinations such as Ctrl + Alt + Delete when the relevant predefined rule is enabled. In an elevated PowerShell window, Microsoft documents this example:

Restart the device before testing the blocked combination. Similar rules can be configured for other predefined or custom combinations, including Alt + F4. Enabling Keyboard Filter alone does not block all typing.

Important Keyboard Filter limitations
- Administrator accounts: filtering is disabled for administrators by default. If administrator filtering is changed, the administrator may need to sign out and back in before the change applies.
- Safe Mode: Keyboard Filter is not loaded in Safe Mode, so blocked keys work there.
- Sleep key: Keyboard Filter cannot block the Sleep key.
- Special hardware keys: some keys, including certain rotation-lock keys, have no virtual-key definition and must be configured by scan code.
- Numeric keypad differences: the main keyboard and numeric keypad can use different virtual keys or scan codes for +, *, -, /, and decimal. Separate rules may be needed.
- Third-party keyboard utilities: filter drivers from software such as Microsoft IntelliType Pro can interfere with Keyboard Filter, especially for extended keys such as BrowserHome and Search.
- Registry location: Keyboard Filter settings are stored under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Embedded\KeyboardFilter. Editing this area configures the feature; it is not a general Windows keyboard-lock mechanism.
If the keyboard is not working after Windows starts
A keyboard that seems locked may have a connection, power, battery, driver, or hardware problem. Try these checks before changing Windows configuration:
- Check the cable or battery. Reconnect a wired keyboard. Replace batteries in a wireless model and check its power switch.
- Try another USB port. Connect directly to the PC instead of through an unpowered USB hub.
- Reset the wireless connection. Turn the keyboard off and on, then reset or reconnect its receiver according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Clean the keys. Dirt or debris can prevent individual keys from registering.
- Test another keyboard. If another keyboard works on the same PC, the original keyboard, receiver, cable, or batteries may be at fault.
- Test the keyboard on another PC. If it fails there as well, troubleshoot or replace the keyboard rather than changing Windows settings.
Check for a keyboard driver update
Device Manager is not a universal keyboard lock or unlock control. To check for a driver update:
- Open Windows Search and type Device Manager.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category, usually Keyboards.
- Double-click the keyboard device.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver and follow the prompts.
Uninstalling a keyboard device is not a dependable permanent lock or unlock method. Windows may detect and reinstall it after a restart or hardware rescan, and results vary by keyboard type.
What about an Fn keyboard-lock shortcut?
There is no universal Windows 11 shortcut such as Fn plus a keyboard-lock icon. Laptop manufacturers can assign Fn combinations to firmware-specific functions. The exact combination depends on the laptop model.
Check the laptop manufacturer’s manual or support page for a model-specific Fn function. Do not treat an Fn shortcut as a standard Windows 11 keyboard lock or unlock command.

Be careful when filtering Windows shortcuts. Keyboard Filter can be configured to suppress Windows + L, but Microsoft documents an on-screen keyboard edge case in which locking the screen can send an additional Windows-key keystroke. This can cause unexpected behavior, particularly in shell configurations documented by Microsoft.

Before blocking sign-in, secure-attention, or escape combinations on a managed device, test the configuration with a separate administrator recovery method.

Can Windows 11 Home or Pro use Keyboard Filter?
Microsoft’s supported-edition list includes Enterprise, Enterprise LTSC, Education, IoT Enterprise, and IoT Enterprise LTSC. It does not list Windows 11 Home or Pro.
Can I lock only certain keys?
On a supported edition, Keyboard Filter can suppress configured keys, predefined combinations, or custom combinations. It must be configured for each required key or combination; enabling the feature does not block all keyboard input.
Will uninstalling the keyboard in Device Manager lock it permanently?
No. Windows may redetect and reinstall the device after a restart or hardware rescan. Uninstallation is not a documented permanent keyboard-lock method.
