If you see AllJoyn Router Service in Windows Services, its short service name is AJRouter. It is not the router that connects your PC to the internet. It is a local message router for applications built on Microsoft’s AllJoyn device-interoperability framework.
For most ordinary Windows PCs, disabling it is unlikely to affect web browsing, Wi-Fi, Windows Update, printing, or normal desktop use. The exception is software or connected-device equipment that depends on the shared Windows AllJoyn router. Microsoft’s current Windows IoT Enterprise guidance marks AJRouter as OK to disable, with a default startup type of Manual. Edition and build still matter, however: Microsoft lists the service as removed from Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024, while it can still exist on other Windows releases.
What AllJoyn Router Service does
AllJoyn is a device-to-device interoperability framework. It was designed so connected-device applications could discover one another and exchange messages without each application having to implement an entirely separate communication layer.
On Windows versions that include the feature, the AllJoyn Router Service provides that shared local routing function. Microsoft identifies the service as:

It is therefore not a general-purpose network router, a Wi-Fi component, a Windows Update service, or a core requirement for internet access. Its scope is limited to AllJoyn applications and devices.
What happens if you disable AJRouter?
AllJoyn clients that rely on the Windows-provided router may no longer work correctly. Depending on the application, that can mean it fails to start, cannot discover a compatible device, or loses communication with an AllJoyn device.
An application that includes its own router may continue to work. Microsoft’s documented failure condition is specifically about AllJoyn clients that do not include their own router.
There is no Microsoft documentation showing that disabling this service improves gaming performance, speeds up Windows, or produces a measurable reduction in general system resource use. Such claims are anecdotal and should not be treated as a guaranteed benefit.

For a Windows IoT Enterprise device that does not use AllJoyn: disabling it is consistent with Microsoft’s current service guidance.
For a normal desktop or laptop: disabling it is usually low-risk if the service is present but you do not use AllJoyn-based software or connected devices. However, first check whether a particular device-management or smart-device application depends on it.

For Windows Server 2016: Microsoft’s guidance is more cautious. The service is installed only with the Desktop Experience, has a default startup type of Manual, and Microsoft gives No guidance rather than an explicit “OK to disable” recommendation. Test the change before applying it broadly to servers.
For Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024: Microsoft lists AllJoyn under Features Removed. The retired components include the AllJoyn Router Service, the Windows.Devices.AllJoyn API namespace, the Win32 API, and the AllJoyn management CSP.

That LTSC statement should not be generalized to every Windows 11 24H2 installation. Service availability varies by edition and build. The reliable test is whether AJRouter exists on the particular computer.
How to check whether the service exists and is running
Use the Services console if you want to inspect its startup setting and current status.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter or select OK.
- Find AllJoyn Router Service in the list.
- Check the Status and Startup Type columns.
If it is not listed, that normally means your Windows edition or build does not include the service. Do not try to recreate it by downloading a similarly named executable.
Advanced users can also query the service from an elevated Command Prompt:

Or from PowerShell:
Get-Service -Name AJRouter
If either command reports that the service cannot be found, there is no local AJRouter service to disable.
How to stop it temporarily
Stopping the service is useful as a test because it does not permanently change the startup configuration.
- Open Task Manager.
- Select the Services tab. If necessary, select More details first.
- Locate
AJRouter. - Right-click it and select Stop.
This stops the service for the current session. It does not set the startup type to Disabled. If an application stops discovering a device after this test, restart the service or restart Windows before deciding whether to leave it disabled.
The normal service operation is Stop. You do not need to use End Task to manage this Windows service.

How to disable AllJoyn Router Service permanently
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
services.msc, then press Enter. - Locate AllJoyn Router Service.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- On the General tab, open the Startup type menu.
- Select Disabled.
- If the service is currently running, select Stop.
- Select Apply, then OK.
You may need administrator permission to change the setting. Afterward, check any AllJoyn-dependent application or device-management software that you use.
How to re-enable it
- Open
services.msc. - Open the properties for AllJoyn Router Service.
- Change Startup type from Disabled to Manual.
- Select Apply.
- Select Start if the service is stopped, then select OK.
Manual is the documented default startup type in Microsoft’s current Windows IoT Enterprise service guidance. It allows Windows or an application to start the service when required rather than launching it automatically at every boot.

AllJoyn management on Windows IoT Core
Windows 10 IoT Core included an AllJoynManagement configuration service provider beginning with Windows 10 version 1511. Microsoft states that this CSP is supported only in Windows 10 IoT Core. It provides controls for discovering and configuring AllJoyn devices, along with firewall settings.
Its documented firewall nodes are:
./Vendor/MSFT/AllJoynManagement/Firewall/PublicProfile

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match./Vendor/MSFT/AllJoynManagement/Firewall/PrivateProfile
The public-profile node controls whether the AllJoyn router service, represented by AJRouter.dll, is enabled for a public network profile. The private-profile node reports whether it is enabled for a private profile. These CSP paths are relevant to IoT device management, not a general control available across every Windows edition.
Is AllJoyn Router Service malware?
No. AllJoyn Router Service with the service name AJRouter is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component where it is included.
That does not authenticate every file or process containing the word “AllJoyn.” If you find a separately installed program or executable with an unusual path, verify its publisher and installation source independently. The service’s legitimate display name alone does not prove that an unrelated executable is genuine.

FAQ
Is AllJoyn Router Service required for internet access?
No. AJRouter routes messages for local AllJoyn clients. It is not the router used for internet access and is not a general-purpose Windows networking service.
Will disabling AJRouter break Wi-Fi, browsing, Windows Update, or printing?
Microsoft documents the affected dependency as AllJoyn clients without their own bundled router. It does not state that ordinary browsing, Wi-Fi, Windows Update, or printing will fail.
Is AllJoyn Router Service enabled by default?
Microsoft’s current Windows IoT Enterprise service table lists its default startup type as Manual, not Automatic. Settings can differ by Windows edition, build, or an administrator’s configuration.
Can I stop AJRouter without disabling it?
Yes. In Task Manager, open Services, right-click AJRouter, and select Stop. This is temporary; changing Startup type to Disabled in the service Properties is the persistent change.
What if AllJoyn Router Service is not listed?
Your edition or build may not include it. Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 lists AllJoyn as removed, but that fact should not be applied to every Windows 11 installation.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: AllJoyn Router Service (AJRouter) is a Microsoft component for local AllJoyn device communication, not a core internet or desktop networking service. If you do not use AllJoyn software or devices, you can generally test-stop it and then disable it. Keep it enabled if an application needs shared AllJoyn routing, and treat Windows Server environments more cautiously because Microsoft gives Server 2016 no explicit disable recommendation.
