Turtle WoW is distributed as an extracted ZIP archive rather than a conventional Windows installer. The simplest setup is to download the full client, extract it to a user-owned folder, and run WoW.exe. You do not need to install it under C:Program Files, edit realmlist.wtf, or use the launcher for the basic Windows installation.
Before you start
- Allow roughly 8 GB for the downloaded ZIP, plus additional space for the extracted client.
- Use a stable internet connection; the official Direct Download is a large file.
- On Windows, extract the game to a folder where your account can read and write files, such as
C:GamesTurtleWoWor a folder under your user profile. - Do not download the client from an unofficial mirror or an executable claiming to be an installer.
1. Create a Turtle WoW account
- Open turtle-wow.org.
- Select the green Sign Up button.
- Create an account name and password. These are the credentials used to log into the game.
- Enter an email address that you can access. It supports password recovery and communications from the staff.
Keep the account name and password separate from your email password. You will need the Turtle WoW account credentials at the game login screen; creating a website account is not the same as using an existing World of Warcraft or Battle.net account.
2. Download the full client
- Return to the Turtle WoW homepage.
- Select Download Client.
- Choose Direct Download.
- Save the ZIP archive somewhere with enough free space.
The full download is approximately 8 GB. The installation guide also lists Google Drive, MediaFire, and Torrent as alternative download methods. These options contain the same client files, so choose the one that works reliably on your connection.
3. Extract and launch Turtle WoW on Windows
Extract the archive
- Right-click the downloaded ZIP file in File Explorer.
- Select Extract All….
- Choose a location such as
C:GamesTurtleWoWor a folder in your user directory. - Select Extract and wait for the operation to finish.
Do not extract the game under C:Program Files. Windows permissions and security controls in that location can prevent the old client from creating or changing its configuration files.

Create a shortcut
Open the extracted folder and locate the executable you want to use:

- Right-click
WoW.exe, orWoWFoV.exefor the 16:9 option. - Select Show more options if you are using the Windows 11 context menu.
- Choose Send to → Desktop (create shortcut).
- Start the game from the new desktop shortcut.
- Enter the Turtle WoW account name and password you created earlier.
If WoW.exe does nothing, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. If that works, move the extracted folder out of a protected location and check your security software before relying on administrator mode.
Launcher and client: do not confuse the two
The launcher and the full game client are separate downloads. The launcher can manage or apply launcher-supported features, but it is not the approximately 8 GB game client. In particular, the Linux file named TurtleWoW.AppImage is a launcher installer, not a replacement for the extracted client.
On Windows, the current launcher filename documented by the Turtle WoW Wiki is TurtleWow.exe. You can use the full-client fallback instead: extract the ZIP and start WoW.exe directly. The basic Windows installation does not require a launcher.
Installation on Steam Deck
- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- Extract the Turtle WoW ZIP to a location you will not move later.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Choose Add A Game in the bottom-left corner.
- Select Add a new non-steam game.
- Browse to the extracted folder and select
WoW.exe. For a 16:9 display,WoWFoV.exemay be used instead. - In the new Steam library entry, open the Gear icon and select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select Proton Experimental.
- Close the properties window and launch the entry from Steam.
If you later move the Turtle WoW folder, edit the non-Steam game entry so it points to the executable’s new location. Otherwise Steam will continue trying to start the old path.

Installation on Linux with Lutris
Linux is not an officially supported Turtle WoW client platform, so this is a community-supported compatibility setup rather than a native installation.
- Extract the ZIP to a directory where your Linux user has full read, write, and execute permission. A folder under your home directory is the preferred location.
- Open Lutris.
- Select the top-left menu button and choose Add locally installed game.
- Set the name to Turtle WoW.
- Choose the Wine runner.
- Open the Game options tab.
- Use Browse… beside the executable field and select
WoW.exe. UseWoWFoV.exefor the 16:9 option. - Set both Working Directory and Wine prefix to the extracted Turtle WoW folder.
- Select Save in the upper-right corner.
- Launch the Turtle WoW entry from Lutris.
For example, if the client is in /home/username/Turtle/, the fields can be:

On Fedora Sericea and similar systems, your home directory may appear under /var/home. A launcher or installer can incorrectly treat that path as a system directory. If Lutris reports a permissions or system-location error, verify the actual path and make sure the folder is owned by your user.
Installation on macOS
macOS is not officially supported by the Turtle WoW team. The following procedures are documented workarounds, not native macOS installations.

Install a supported Windows environment in the virtual machine, then follow the Windows extraction and shortcut steps. Performance and compatibility can vary because the game is running through a virtualized Windows environment.
Intel Macs on Catalina or newer
The guide documents Porting Kit as the workaround:
- Open Porting Kit and choose Add Application.
- Select the Turtle WoW executable from the extracted client.
- Open Advanced Settings.
- Set Engine Version to
WS11WineCX64Bit19.0.2. - Continue with the default settings.
- Run Turtle WoW through Porting Kit.
Use the documented engine value exactly. Replacing it with a newer Wine engine may produce different results and is not part of the verified installation procedure.
Fix common startup and display problems
Windows Security or antivirus blocks the client
Security software can interfere with the extracted files or prevent the client from starting. Extract the game into a folder excluded from real-time protection. If necessary, temporarily disable antivirus protection while testing, then add the Turtle WoW folder as an exception in Windows Security. Only use an exception for the client folder you obtained from an official download source.
The game freezes or stutters badly
Open the game’s video settings and disable Hardware cursor. The FAQ identifies this option as a possible cause of severe camera or client stuttering, including freezes in particular zones. If the problem remains, undo other recent changes in Video Options and test again.
Windowed Mode causes a black screen
- Close the game.
- Open the extracted client folder.
- Open
WTFconfig.wtfin a text editor. - Add or change these exact lines:
SET gxWindow "1"
SET gxMaximize "1"- Save the file and start the client again.
Adding or removing client modifications
Client modifications use .mpq files. To install one, place its MPQ file in:

TurtleWoWDataTo remove it, delete the corresponding MPQ file. If you use the launcher, open its Mods tab and enable and apply the installed mods before starting the game.

The game loads MPQ modifications in filename order, beginning with patch-1.mpq and ending with patch-Z.mpq; two mods that use conflicting names or modify the same files can cause problems.
Also check the mod’s current compatibility information. The documented latest patch is 1.17.2, and Turtle HD is marked unsupported for that patch. The documented guidance also says that Darker Nights should use Patch-Y, because Turtle WoW uses the Patch-Z naming pattern internally for language localization.
What you should not need to do
- Do not install under
C:Program Files: use a user-owned folder instead. - Do not manually edit
realmlist.wtfas a standard step: the current documented procedure is to extract the client and launchWoW.exeorWoWFoV.exe. - Do not mistake the launcher for the client:
TurtleWow.exeandTurtleWoW.AppImageare launcher files; the full client is the ZIP archive. - Do not assume Linux or macOS support is official: both platforms rely on community workarounds.

Do I need the Turtle WoW launcher?
No. On Windows, you can extract the full client and launch WoW.exe directly. The launcher is separate from the full client.
Can I install Turtle WoW in Program Files?
