“Drag and drop” in Microsoft Edge can mean several different things. You might be dragging a downloaded file from Edge’s Downloads menu, moving an item inside a website, dropping a file on an Edge taskbar icon, or dragging a link into another application. These operations use different Windows and Edge components, so a failure in one does not necessarily mean that drag and drop is disabled everywhere.
Start by identifying the operation that fails, then use the matching fix below.
1. If you cannot drag a downloaded file from Edge’s Downloads menu
Microsoft documented a problem in Edge Stable version 145 where some users could not drag files directly from the newer Downloads menu. The interface was released through a controlled feature rollout, so the problem affected some Edge installations rather than every user. Microsoft lists this issue as resolved.
The most reliable workaround is to open the download folder in File Explorer and drag the file from there:

- Compact Mouse: With a comfortable and contoured shape, this Logitech ambidextrous wireless mouse feels great in either right or left hand and is far superior to a touchpad
- Durable and Reliable: This USB wireless mouse features a line-by-line scroll wheel, up to 1 year of battery life (2) thanks to a smart sleep mode function, and comes with the included AA battery
- Universal Compatibility: Your Logitech mouse works with your Windows PC, Mac, or laptop, so no matter what type of computer you own today or buy tomorrow your mouse will be compatible
- Plug and Play Simplicity: Just plug in the tiny nano USB receiver and start working in seconds with a strong, reliable connection to your wireless computer mouse up to 33 feet / 10 m (5)
- Better than touchpad: Get more done by adding M185 to your laptop; according to a recent study, laptop users who chose this mouse over a touchpad were 50% more productive (3) and worked 30% faster (4)
- Open Edge.
- Select the Settings and more button (…).
- Select Settings > Downloads.
- Check the folder shown next to Location.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Drag the downloaded file from File Explorer to the destination application or folder.
This workaround bypasses the Edge Downloads menu. It is also useful if the download folder is on a network share, provided that the share is available and you have permission to write to it.
Check that the download location still exists, is writable, and has enough free disk space. A file can download successfully and still fail to drag from the Downloads menu; that is different from a download that never completes.
2. Update Edge before trying more advanced fixes
Because the Downloads-menu problem was tied to a specific Edge release and is listed as resolved, update Edge first.

- Select … > Settings.
- Select About Microsoft Edge.
- Allow Edge to check for and install updates.
- Restart Edge when prompted, then test the drag operation again.
You can open the same update page directly by entering this address in Edge:
edge://settings/help
Record the complete version number if you need to contact support. Do not roll back Edge as a first response. Updating and using File Explorer as a temporary workaround are safer than installing an older browser build.
3. Check whether the download itself is failing
If the file is not actually downloading, fixing drag and drop will not solve the underlying problem. Edge may show messages such as:
| Message | Possible cause |
|---|---|
| Couldn’t download – Blocked | Security software, browser protection, or an organization policy blocked the file. |
| Couldn’t download – Virus detected | Microsoft Defender or another antivirus product detected a threat. |
| Couldn’t download – Network error | The connection failed or the server stopped responding. |
| Couldn’t download – Disk full | The destination drive has insufficient free space. |
| Couldn’t download – Insufficient permissions | Your account cannot write to the download folder. |
| Failed – Forbidden | The server returned an HTTP 403 response or otherwise refused the request. |
Review the download settings at:
edge://settings/downloads
Confirm the location, check that the folder exists, verify that you can create a file there, and check the free space on the drive. If the location is a network folder, make sure the computer is connected to the network and that the share is still accessible.
4. If drag and drop fails only inside one website
Websites implement their own drag-and-drop behavior with JavaScript and HTML. A website may use dragging to reorder folders, move records, or upload files. If dragging fails only on one site, the problem may be a site-specific compatibility issue rather than a Windows or Edge problem.
For example, users reported that rearranging folders in Freshdesk stopped working after an Edge/Chromium 138 update while an older Edge version continued to work. That kind of failure does not show that Windows file dragging has been disabled.

- Plug-and-Play Connection: Connect in 3 seconds (1) to your computer via a strong, reliable USB receiver that plugs into your computer’s USB port
- Comfortable and Mobile: Comfortable, mobile mouse shape is small enough to toss in a bag and the ambidextrous design guides either hand into a natural position
- Power-Saving Features: 12-month battery life (2) and auto sleep help you go longer between AA battery changes
- Reliable 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse: Reliable, the long-range computer mouse works up to 33 ft /10 m (3) away from your computer
- Easy Navigation: Thanks to controlled line-by-line scrolling and optical tracking, M170 Logitech Mouse has smooth and accurate cursor control on almost any surface
Use these tests to isolate the cause:
- Try the same operation in another browser.
- Open an Edge InPrivate window with Ctrl + Shift + N, sign in if necessary, and test again.
- Try the site in a new Edge profile.
- Ask the website administrator whether the site has a known browser compatibility issue.
If the operation works in InPrivate but not in a normal window, an extension or profile setting is a likely cause.
5. Disable Edge extensions one at a time
Privacy tools, content blockers, download managers, security extensions, and productivity add-ons can interfere with mouse events or page scripts.
- Open:
edge://extensions
- Turn off one extension.
- Return to the affected website and test drag and drop.
- Repeat until you identify the extension that changes the behavior.
Disable extensions individually rather than turning them all off permanently. Once you find the cause, update, reconfigure, or remove that extension.
6. Test with a new Edge profile
A damaged or incorrectly configured profile can affect one user profile while Edge works normally elsewhere.
- Select the Profile button in the Edge toolbar.
- Select Add profile > Add.
- Test the same drag-and-drop action in the new profile.
If it works in the new profile, the original profile or one of its extensions is implicated. You can continue troubleshooting the old profile without immediately deleting it.
Clearing cached files is another reasonable step for website-specific problems:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Select … > History > Open history page.
- Select Delete browsing data.
- Set Time range to All time.
- Select Cached images and files.
- Select Clear now.
Clearing the cache may repair broken page resources, but it is not a confirmed fix for the specific Edge Downloads-menu bug.
7. Check whether Edge is running as administrator
Windows separates applications running at different integrity levels. An ordinary application may not be able to send the same user-interface interaction to an elevated application. This commonly produces a pattern where dragging works between normal applications but fails when Edge or the destination program was started with Run as administrator.
To stop Edge from running elevated:
- Close every Edge window.
- Right-click the Edge shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Clear Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply > OK.
- Start Edge normally and test again.
Also check the destination application. If it was launched with Run as administrator, close it and reopen it normally for the test. Edge generally should not be run as administrator; most desktop applications do not need elevated privileges for ordinary browsing.

8. If only dragging onto the taskbar fails
Windows 11 initially lacked the ability to drag a file onto a taskbar application to bring that application to the foreground. Microsoft restored taskbar drag and drop during Windows 11 development, including support in Insider Build 22557.

Therefore, a taskbar limitation is not a general explanation for every Edge drag-and-drop problem.
If the only failure is dropping a file on an Edge taskbar icon, try:
- Open the Edge window first, then drag the file directly into the visible window.
- Hold the file, press Alt + Tab to switch to Edge, and drop it into the target window.
- Open the destination folder or application before starting the drag.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart the computer.

9. Understand Edge Super Drag Drop
Edge includes a separate feature called Super Drag Drop. It applies when you drag a link or selected text from a webpage and drop it onto the same page. Depending on what you drag, Edge can open the URL in a new tab or search the selected text using the default search engine.

- Dragging files from the Downloads menu.
- Dragging ordinary files between Windows applications.
- Uploading files to every website.

Microsoft supports this feature on Windows with Edge version 122 or later. It is not supported on macOS, Android, or iOS.
On managed computers, administrators can control it with the SuperDragDropEnabled policy. To see active Edge policies, open:
edge://policy
The policy is located under Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge in Group Policy. Its registry location is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge
The registry value is a REG_DWORD named SuperDragDropEnabled. A value of 1 enables the policy-controlled feature. This policy does not enable ordinary Windows file dragging or repair the Downloads menu.

10. Repair Microsoft Edge
If several Edge drag-and-drop operations fail, and the problem remains after updating and testing without extensions, repair the browser.
- Close Edge for all signed-in Windows users.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Edge.
- Select the three-dot menu next to it and choose Modify.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt by selecting Yes.
- Select Repair.
Repair requires an internet connection and administrator rights. Microsoft says that browser data and settings should not be affected. If Modify is unavailable, Edge may have been installed or managed by your organization; contact the administrator rather than trying to alter the installation manually.
Do not use an unverified registry fix as a universal solution
Some forum and Q&A responses recommend creating this registry value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgeExperimentationAndConfigurationServiceControl
with a value of 0. This is not documented by Microsoft as a dedicated drag-and-drop repair. It relates to Edge’s experimentation and configuration service, not a confirmed switch for the Downloads menu. Do not present or rely on it as an official universal fix.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 version details
The Edge Downloads-menu issue was documented by Edge version, not as a Windows 10-only or Windows 11-only problem. Record both versions when diagnosing it:
edge://settings/help
Then check Windows under Settings > System > About.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Standard installations no longer receive normal Microsoft technical support, feature updates, or security fixes after that date, although eligible Extended Security Updates and some long-term-servicing editions have separate arrangements.

FAQ
Why can I download a file in Edge but not drag it from the Downloads menu?
The download and the Downloads-menu drag action are separate operations. A documented Edge Stable version 145 issue affected dragging files from the newer Downloads menu. Open the download folder from Settings > Downloads and drag the file from File Explorer, then update Edge through Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
Did Windows 11 remove drag and drop?
No. Windows 11 initially had a taskbar limitation that prevented dropping files onto taskbar applications, but Microsoft restored that behavior during Windows 11 development. A taskbar issue does not explain failures inside websites, the Edge Downloads menu, or File Explorer.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does drag and drop work in InPrivate but not in normal Edge?
An extension or profile-specific setting is the most likely cause. Open edge://extensions and disable extensions one at a time. If necessary, create a new profile with Profile > Add profile > Add.
Does Super Drag Drop fix ordinary file dragging?
No. Super Drag Drop is a separate Edge feature for dragging links or selected text within a webpage. It does not control downloaded files, Windows application-to-application dragging, website uploads, or taskbar dragging.
Can running Edge as administrator stop drag and drop?
Yes. Windows privilege isolation can block interaction between applications running at different integrity levels. Clear Run this program as an administrator in the Edge shortcut’s Properties > Compatibility tab, and test with both Edge and the destination application running normally.
Should I edit the registry to repair Edge drag and drop?
Not as a general fix. The registry value sometimes suggested online for Edge experimentation settings is not documented by Microsoft as a repair for drag and drop. Update or repair Edge and use the correct workaround for the operation that fails.
The Bottom Line
First determine whether the failure involves the Downloads menu, a website, the taskbar, Super Drag Drop, or a cross-application privilege boundary. For the recent Downloads-menu issue, use File Explorer as the workaround and update Edge. For website-only failures, test InPrivate, extensions, and a new profile. For broad failures, check administrator mode and repair Edge.
