Choose between WhatsApp Web and Desktop

Use WhatsApp Web in a browser
- On your computer, open WhatsApp Web.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to link your account. WhatsApp offers a QR-code or phone-number linking flow.
- On your primary phone, open WhatsApp and follow its instructions to authorize the new linked device.
- When linking is complete, use WhatsApp in the browser.
If you are using a shared computer, log out of the linked session when you are finished. Use WhatsApp’s official site and follow its current on-screen instructions.

Install WhatsApp Desktop on Windows
- Open the official WhatsApp Desktop download page.
- Select the Windows option and follow the page’s instructions to download or install the app.
- Launch WhatsApp Desktop and follow its on-screen instructions to link your account.
- Authorize the new linked device using your primary phone.
WhatsApp currently lists Windows 10.1 64-bit version 1903 or later on its download page. Requirements may change; check that page for the latest information. If your computer does not meet the listed requirement, WhatsApp Web is the browser-based alternative.
Install WhatsApp Desktop on Mac
- Open the official WhatsApp Desktop download page.
- Choose macOS and follow the download instructions, or use the App Store option if offered.
- Open the downloaded app and follow the installation prompts.
- Start WhatsApp Desktop and follow its on-screen instructions to link your account.
- Authorize the new linked device using your primary phone.
WhatsApp currently lists macOS 11 or later. Check the official download page for current requirements. If your Mac does not meet them, use WhatsApp Web.
Link the computer to your WhatsApp account
Your WhatsApp account must already be registered on a primary phone. Use the instructions displayed by WhatsApp on the computer and phone to complete linking. WhatsApp supports linking with a QR code or phone-number flow; the available instructions may vary by flow or app version.

Link with a QR code
- Open WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp Desktop on the computer.
- Choose the QR-code linking option if it is displayed.
- On your primary phone, open WhatsApp and follow the current instructions to link a device and scan the code.
Link with a phone number
If WhatsApp offers the phone-number option on the computer, select it and follow the displayed instructions on the computer and primary phone. This links the computer to your existing account; it does not create a separate account or remove the need for a primary phone to authorize the link.
Use WhatsApp after it is connected
WhatsApp says you can chat or call from WhatsApp Web or its desktop apps even when your phone is off. WhatsApp’s calling page describes voice and video calls as free, with no time limits, and end-to-end encrypted; data charges may apply. Check WhatsApp’s current pages for details about availability and features.
WhatsApp currently supports up to four linked devices at a time. If you have reached the limit, remove a linked session you no longer use before adding another device.

Remove a computer from WhatsApp
If you no longer use a computer or used a shared computer, log out of that linked session. Follow WhatsApp’s current Help Center instructions for the logout steps, which can vary by app version. Review your linked devices and remove any session you do not recognize.
Fix common WhatsApp Web and Desktop problems

Security checks before using a shared computer
- Use WhatsApp Web or the official desktop download page rather than a third-party download site.
- Log out of a linked session on a shared computer when you are finished.
- Review your linked devices and remove sessions you do not recognize.
- Do not send or disclose your QR code to another person.
Linking authorizes a device to access your account. Treat an unexpected linking request as a security warning.
What you do not need
You do not need a separate WhatsApp account for your computer, and the phone does not need to stay on for ongoing use after linking. You do need the primary phone to register your account and authorize new linked devices.
