Windows 11 has no Settings or Control Panel switch called Disable CPU Check; Windows Setup enforces the processor requirement. For an in-place upgrade, use the AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup; for a clean installation from USB or DVD, use BypassCPUCheck under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig. These methods install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, and Microsoft does not guarantee updates, stability, or support for it.

Check whether the CPU is actually unsupported

Check your processor against Microsoft’s processor requirements for the specific Windows 11 release you intend to install. Microsoft maintains separate supported-processor tables for versions 21H2, 22H2/23H2, 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, so support for one release does not establish support for another. See Microsoft’s Windows processor requirements.

The general minimum is a 1 GHz-or-faster processor with at least two cores, and it must also appear on Microsoft’s compatible 64-bit processor list or be part of a compatible SoC. Windows 11 has other requirements, including TPM 2.0, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, RAM, storage, graphics, and display support. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications.

Method 1: Bypass the CPU check during an in-place upgrade

Use this method when Windows is already running and you want to upgrade without booting from installation media. Use an official Windows 11 ISO and start setup.exe from the existing Windows installation.

  1. Download or mount an official Windows 11 ISO.
  2. Open the mounted ISO in File Explorer and run setup.exe.
  3. When Windows Setup is open, press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt.
  4. Enter this command exactly: reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup” /v AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f.

This creates the 32-bit DWORD AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU with value 1 at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup.

  1. Close Command Prompt.
  2. Restart or resume Windows Setup and continue the upgrade.

This value is intended for the upgrade path. It is not the clean-install value and should not be placed under LabConfig. The command and Registry Editor procedure are described in Microsoft Community guidance.

Registry Editor alternative

If you prefer to create the value graphically:

  1. Press Shift + F10 in Windows Setup.
  2. Type regedit and press Enter.
  3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup.
  4. Right-click Setup, select New > Key, and name it MoSetup.
  5. Select MoSetup. In the right pane, right-click an empty area and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  6. Name the value AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU.
  7. Double-click it, set Value data to 1, and select OK.
  8. Close Registry Editor and Command Prompt, then return to Setup.

Method 2: Bypass the CPU check for a clean installation

Use this method when you boot a computer from Windows 11 installation media and intend to perform a new installation. This can erase the target drive, so verify your backup and confirm which disk contains your data before deleting partitions.

  1. Boot from the Windows 11 USB flash drive or DVD.
  2. Proceed through the initial language and keyboard screens.
  3. When you reach the Install Now screen, press Shift + F10.
  4. Type regedit and press Enter.
  5. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup.
  6. Right-click Setup, select New > Key, and name the key LabConfig.
  7. Select LabConfig. In the right pane, create a DWORD (32-bit) Value named BypassCPUCheck.
  8. Open the new value and set Value data to 1.
  9. Close Registry Editor and Command Prompt.
  10. Return to Setup and select Install Now again.

You can create the same value directly from the Setup Command Prompt with: reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig” /v BypassCPUCheck /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Setup should then continue to the product-key, license-terms, and installation-type screens. See Microsoft Community guidance on clean-install registry values.

Bypass other checks only if Setup requires them

BypassCPUCheck bypasses the CPU validation only. It does not automatically bypass TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, or RAM checks. If clean Setup stops at one of those checks, create the relevant DWORD values in the same LabConfig key:

TPM BypassTPMCheck reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig” /v BypassTPMCheck /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
Secure Boot BypassSecureBootCheck reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig” /v BypassSecureBootCheck /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
RAM BypassRAMCheck reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig” /v BypassRAMCheck /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

For example, if a clean installation fails on both the CPU and TPM checks, run both commands: reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig” /v BypassCPUCheck /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f and reg add “HKLM\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig” /v BypassTPMCheck /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f.

Do not add every bypass automatically. First identify the failed requirement. A bypass does not fix a missing TPM, enable Secure Boot, add RAM, or make unsupported hardware officially compatible.

Common mistakes

Using the wrong registry key

The two procedures use different locations:

Installation type Required location Value
In-place upgrade HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU
Clean installation from media HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig BypassCPUCheck

Putting BypassCPUCheck under MoSetup, or putting AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU under LabConfig, does not implement the corresponding bypass.

Changing the registry in the wrong environment

For a boot-from-USB installation, press Shift + F10 inside Windows Setup and make the change there. Editing the registry of the existing Windows installation before booting the USB installer is not the same procedure.

Expecting the bypass to guarantee updates

Installing Windows 11 on an unsupported processor does not make that processor supported. Microsoft does not guarantee updates, stability, or support on unsupported hardware. Avoid this method on a computer that needs predictable vendor support.

Windows 11 release considerations

Microsoft identifies Windows 11 25H2 as the latest release in the dossier’s checked information; 24H2 Home and Pro are listed with an end-of-updates date of October 13, 2026. Check the processor table and support status for the exact release and edition you plan to install. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 release-health page.

FAQ

Is there a Windows 11 Settings option to disable the CPU check?

No. Windows 11 does not provide a Settings or Control Panel toggle named “Disable CPU Check.” The check is handled by Windows Setup, and the bypass uses an installation-specific registry value.

Which registry value bypasses the CPU check during an upgrade?

For an in-place upgrade, use the 32-bit DWORD AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU with value 1 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\MoSetup.

Which value bypasses the CPU check during a clean installation?

For installation from USB or DVD, create BypassCPUCheck as a 32-bit DWORD with value 1 under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig.

Does BypassCPUCheck bypass TPM and Secure Boot too?

No. It targets the CPU check only. Clean Setup uses separate values named BypassTPMCheck, BypassSecureBootCheck, and BypassRAMCheck for those checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an unsupported Windows 11 PC receive updates?

Microsoft does not guarantee updates, stability, or support on unsupported hardware. That is different from claiming an unsupported PC categorically never receives updates.

The Bottom Line

There is no Windows 11 switch that disables the CPU check. For an in-place upgrade, use AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU under MoSetup; for a clean installation, use BypassCPUCheck under LabConfig from the Setup Command Prompt. Use an official installation image, back up your files, and treat the resulting installation as unsupported because Microsoft’s normal compatibility and update guarantees do not apply.
