To remove a single app shortcut from the Windows 11 desktop, right-click the shortcut and select Delete. You can also select it and press the Delete key. This removes only the shortcut—not the installed app or the file or location it points to.

Remove one app shortcut from the Windows 11 desktop

  1. Find the app shortcut on the desktop.
  2. Right-click the shortcut.
  3. Select Delete.
  4. If Windows asks you to confirm, select Yes.

You can use the keyboard instead: select the shortcut, then press Delete. A shortcut normally has a small arrow overlay on its icon, which can help distinguish it from an actual file or folder.

Deleting the shortcut does not uninstall the application. It removes the .lnk shortcut file that appears on the desktop; the installed program and the location it opens remain intact. Microsoft’s guidance confirms that a desktop shortcut can be deleted without removing the associated app or target file (Microsoft Q&A).

Check that you are deleting a shortcut

Before confirming deletion, check the icon carefully if you are unsure what it is. A shortcut usually has a small arrow in the lower-left corner. You can also right-click it and choose Properties. A shortcut’s Properties window normally includes a Shortcut tab and a target location.

If the desktop item is a normal file or folder rather than a shortcut, deleting it moves that item to the Recycle Bin. It may contain the original data, so do not confirm deletion until you know what you selected.

Remove a shortcut through File Explorer

If the icon is difficult to select, open the desktop location directly:

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select Desktop in the left navigation pane.
  3. Find the shortcut.
  4. Right-click it and select Delete, or select it and press Delete.

File Explorer is also useful when desktop icons are hidden. Windows can show items from both your personal desktop and the shared Public Desktop, so an icon that is not in one location may be in the other.

Hide all desktop icons without deleting them

If you want a clean desktop but still want to keep every shortcut, hide the icons instead of deleting them:

Do not use Desktop icon settings for ordinary app shortcuts

The Desktop icon settings dialog is not the normal removal tool for app shortcuts. In Windows 11, open it through Start > Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings. It controls Windows’ built-in desktop icons, including:

  • This PC
  • User’s Files
  • Network
  • Recycle Bin

To remove one of those common icons, clear its checkbox and select OK. For an ordinary application shortcut, use the desktop’s Delete command instead. Microsoft describes these as separate controls (Microsoft Support).

Remove the app instead of only its shortcut

If your goal is to free storage or remove the application completely, deleting its desktop shortcut is not enough. Use one of these Windows 11 uninstall methods:

Some applications use their own uninstaller or cannot be removed from every Windows interface. If Uninstall is unavailable, check the app publisher’s instructions or use another Windows uninstall path. Microsoft’s uninstall guidance covers these options (Microsoft Support).

What to do if Windows requests administrator approval

A shortcut may be stored in the shared Public Desktop folder: C:\Users\Public\Desktop. This folder supplies desktop items to multiple user accounts. A standard user may not have permission to modify it, so Windows can display a User Account Control prompt when you delete a shared shortcut. Although the prompt wording may suggest the linked program will be removed, administrator authorization in this case allows deletion of the shortcut file, not the installed application (Microsoft Q&A).

Only approve the prompt if you have verified that the selected item is the shortcut you intend to remove. If you do not have administrator credentials, ask an administrator to remove the shared shortcut or change its permissions.

Fix a shortcut that comes back after deletion

If the icon returns, Windows or the application may be creating another shortcut. Places and causes to check include:

  • Your personal Desktop folder, which applies to your user account.
  • C:\Users\Public\Desktop, which is visible to multiple users.
  • An application installer or updater that recreates its shortcut.
  • A company or school management policy that restores required shortcuts.

First, delete the visible icon again through File Explorer > Desktop. If it remains or reappears, check the Public Desktop folder as well. A per-user shortcut and a shared shortcut can have the same name; removing one does not remove the other.

If the shortcut returns after the app updates or after every sign-in, an installer, updater, or organizational policy may be responsible. On a managed computer, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly deleting the icon. The exact reason cannot be determined from the icon alone, and not every recurring shortcut has the same cause.

Remove or create shortcuts safely

No command is required to remove a normal desktop app shortcut. Use the desktop context menu or the Delete key.

To create a replacement shortcut for a file or folder, right-click the item in File Explorer and select Show more options > Send to > Desktop (create shortcut). On some Windows installations, Show more options is not shown because the full context menu appears directly; in that case, select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).

FAQ

Will deleting a desktop shortcut uninstall the app?

No. Deleting the shortcut removes only the desktop link. The installed application remains available from Start, Search, or its installation folder.

How do I remove a shortcut without deleting the original file?

Right-click the shortcut and select Delete. A shortcut points to another file, folder, or app; deleting the shortcut does not delete its target.

Why does Windows ask for administrator permission when I delete a shortcut?

The shortcut may be in C:\Users\Public\Desktop, the shared desktop folder. Modifying that folder can require administrator approval. In this case, approval authorizes deletion of the shortcut, not the linked application.

Why does the desktop shortcut keep coming back?

An installer, updater, shared Public Desktop shortcut, or organization management policy may be recreating it. Check both your personal Desktop folder and C:\Users\Public\Desktop.

How do I remove every desktop icon temporarily?

Right-click an empty area of the desktop, select View, and clear Show desktop icons. Select View > Show desktop icons later to restore them.

What is the difference between deleting a shortcut and uninstalling an app?

Deleting a shortcut removes one icon. Uninstalling an app removes the program through Start, Settings, or Control Panel and may also remove its installed components.

The Bottom Line

For one unwanted app icon, right-click the shortcut and select Delete; the app stays installed. Use Windows’ uninstall tools only when you want to remove the application itself, and use View > Show desktop icons when you simply want a blank desktop.
