DaVinci Resolve is a full Windows video editor with separate workspaces for editing, visual effects, color correction, audio, and delivery. The current major release is DaVinci Resolve 21, available as a free edition and as DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.

The free edition is not a time-limited trial. It handles most 8-bit video formats up to 60 fps and Ultra HD 3840 × 2160. Studio adds features such as the DaVinci AI Neural Engine, Magic Mask, extra Resolve FX, temporal and spatial noise reduction, Film Grain, Optical Blur, 10-bit video support up to 120 fps, and resolutions above 4K.

This guide covers installation, first-run setup, importing footage, editing, playback performance, exporting, and the Windows problems most likely to stop Resolve from working.

Check that your Windows PC can run Resolve

Resolve depends heavily on the GPU. It may install successfully but fail at startup if Windows is using an unsupported or badly installed graphics driver.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Blackmagic’s current Windows requirements include:

Component Current minimum
Operating system Windows 10 Creators Update or later
System memory 16 GB RAM
Memory for Fusion 32 GB RAM
Graphics Integrated or discrete GPU with at least 4 GB VRAM
GPU API OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 12 support
Graphics driver Current driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel
Blackmagic monitoring hardware Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 12.9 or later, if applicable

A recent CPU and fast SSD improve the experience, but a more powerful CPU cannot compensate for an unsuitable GPU, insufficient VRAM, slow storage, or a problematic codec. The minimum specification is not a guarantee of smooth playback with 4K, 10-bit, multicamera, Fusion, or noise-reduction workloads.

Choose the correct Resolve edition

Blackmagic provides separate Windows installers for:

  • DaVinci Resolve: the free edition.
  • DaVinci Resolve Studio: the paid edition, requiring an activation code, license dongle, or Blackmagic Cloud license.

Studio is not merely an unlocked setting inside the free installer. Select the edition you actually own or intend to use from the official product or support page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before downloading, check Blackmagic’s support page for the latest Windows patch and download. Patch versions can change, so do not rely on an old download link or third-party mirror.

Download and install DaVinci Resolve

  1. Open the official DaVinci Resolve product page or Blackmagic’s Resolve and Fusion support page.
  2. Choose the Windows download for either DaVinci Resolve or DaVinci Resolve Studio.
  3. Complete the download form if Blackmagic displays one.
  4. Save the ZIP file to a local folder, normally Downloads.

Extract the ZIP before running setup

The Windows download is a ZIP archive. Do not try to run the installer directly inside the archive.

  1. Open File Explorer > Downloads.
  2. Right-click the Resolve ZIP file.
  3. Select Extract All….
  4. Open the extracted folder.
  5. Run the DaVinci Resolve installer from that folder.

If extraction reports a checksum or corrupt-archive error, download the ZIP again. An incomplete download, insufficient space on the Windows system or temporary drive, or a partially extracted archive can cause this failure. Extract to a local drive with enough free space rather than attempting installation from a network location or the ZIP preview window.

Run Resolve for the first time

  1. Open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Search for DaVinci Resolve.
  3. Press Enter.

Resolve’s first-run workflow can check the system and GPU, ask for a project resolution, select a media or scratch location, and offer a keyboard layout. For a new installation, choose Quick Setup. Experienced users can select Skip and Start Right Now and configure the settings manually.

If you accept the default Windows media location, Resolve’s setup guide identifies the user’s Videos folder as the default. That is convenient for a small test project, but it may not be the best location for large camera files, cache data, and generated media.

Set storage before starting a large project

Resolve generates cache files, optimized media, proxy media, rendered files, gallery stills, and other temporary data. If you do not configure another location, the system drive may fill with these files.

  1. Open DaVinci Resolve > Preferences.
  2. Select System > Media Storage.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Choose a fast SSD with enough free space.
  5. Move it to the top of the Media Storage list if necessary.
  6. Click Save.

The first location in the Media Storage list is used for several generated files when no project-specific location has been set. Resolve 21 includes search fields in Preferences and Project Settings, so you can search for a setting instead of expanding every category.

For further control, open File > Project Settings > Master Settings > Working Folders and set locations for cache and proxy-related files. Keeping source footage, cache, and exports on deliberately chosen drives makes projects easier to move and reduces the chance of filling the Windows system disk.

Create a project and set its properties

  1. In the Project Manager, click New Project.
  2. Enter a project name.
  3. Click Create.

A Resolve project is not a container for the original video. It stores edits, grades, timelines, metadata, and references to media files. If you move a video in File Explorer, disconnect its drive, change a drive letter, or open the project on another PC without copying the footage, Resolve can show the clip as offline.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Before editing, open File > Project Settings. Set or verify:

  • Timeline resolution
  • Timeline and playback frame rate
  • Color-management mode
  • Proxy and cache locations
  • Working folders

Set the timeline frame rate before adding substantial content. Resolve may restrict frame-rate changes after a timeline has been created or populated. Changing it late can create timing, conforming, or export problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Import video, audio, and graphics

  1. Click the Media page.
  2. Use the Media Storage browser to locate your footage folder.
  3. Drag clips into the Media Pool.

You can also use File > Import > Media. Create bins in the Media Pool to keep footage, audio, music, graphics, and exports separate. The Media Pool records project references; it does not move or duplicate the original files.

Edit a video on the Edit page

Resolve separates post-production into pages:

Page Purpose
Media Ingest and organize files
Cut Fast assembly and streamlined editing
Edit Conventional track-based editing
Fusion Visual effects and motion graphics
Color Color correction and grading
Fairlight Audio editing and mixing
Deliver Rendering and export
Photo Still-image editing in Resolve 21

For a standard edit:

  1. Open the Edit page.
  2. Drag clips from the Media Pool onto the timeline.
  3. Trim clips by dragging their edit points.
  4. Select a clip and use the Inspector to change properties such as position, scale, and opacity.
  5. Open the Effects Library to add transitions, titles, and effects.
  6. Save with File > Save Project.

Resolve 21’s Edit and Cut pages include additional timeline and subtitle controls, including Timeline > Select Transitions and subtitle fade handles.

Fix slow or stuttering playback

Playback performance depends on the footage codec, resolution, frame rate, GPU, VRAM, storage, cache, and other applications competing for resources.

  • Create proxy media or optimized media for demanding footage.
  • Lower the viewer playback resolution.
  • Put cache and proxy folders on a fast SSD.
  • Close GPU-intensive applications.
  • Confirm that Resolve is using the intended GPU and a current manufacturer driver.
  • Keep cache files off a nearly full system drive.

Proxy, cache, and generated-media locations can be adjusted through File > Project Settings > Master Settings > Working Folders. Resolve 20 and later also support a project-specific Media Location for generated media when creating a project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Export the finished video

  1. Open the Deliver page.
  2. Choose a YouTube or Vimeo preset, or select Custom Export.
  3. Choose the output format and codec.
  4. Set the file name and destination folder.
  5. Choose Entire Timeline or another render range.
  6. Click Add to Render Queue.
  7. Click Render All or Start Render, depending on the wording shown in your version.

The Deliver page gives you control over format, codec, resolution, destination, and render range. For a quick result, use File > Quick Export; it is simpler but exposes fewer technical settings than the Deliver page.

Common Windows problems

“GPU Initialization Failed”

This message can appear as “DaVinci Resolve could not initialize OpenGL.” Typical causes include an outdated or corrupted driver, an unsupported GPU, conflicting remnants of an older NVIDIA driver, problematic OpenCL files, or Resolve selecting the wrong GPU.

Check that the GPU has at least 4 GB of VRAM and supports the required OpenCL or CUDA version. Install a current driver supplied by NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. If the problem began after a graphics-driver change, a clean manufacturer-supported driver installation may be necessary. Do not treat the CPU as a substitute for the required GPU.

The ZIP says it is corrupt

Re-download Resolve from Blackmagic, extract the complete archive with Extract All…, and confirm that the Windows system and temporary drives have sufficient free space. Do not launch the installer from inside the ZIP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clips show “Media Offline”

Resolve has lost access to the file path recorded in the project. The file may have been moved, the drive letter may have changed, or a removable or shared drive may be unavailable.

  1. Select the offline clips in the Media Pool.
  2. Right-click the selection.
  3. Choose Relink Selected Clips.
  4. Select the folder containing the correct media.

If you move a project to another PC, copy or share the original media as well. The project file alone is not enough.

Audio works but the video is offline

This can be a codec, bit-depth, chroma-subsampling, variable-frame-rate, or hardware-decoding compatibility problem rather than a missing file. The free Windows edition does not have the same codec and 10-bit support as Studio, and not every H.264 or H.265 file is supported identically.

Installing a random third-party codec pack is not a dependable fix and can create conflicts. Check the clip’s codec and bit depth, test a supported transcode or proxy, and compare the result with Studio if the workflow requires broader codec support.

A project will not open after upgrading

Resolve 21 attempts to maintain project-library compatibility with Resolve 20.3.2, but a project opened or created in Resolve 21 is not guaranteed to remain usable in Resolve 20.3.2. Before upgrading, make a full project-library backup and individual project backups. Never upgrade the only copy of an important library.

Fusion uses more memory than expected

The Windows requirement rises from 16 GB RAM to 32 GB when using Fusion. High-resolution compositions, 3D scenes, particle systems, and multiple effects can require more than 32 GB. Close other applications and use proxies where appropriate, but recognize that complex Fusion work may need a workstation above the published minimum.

FAQ

Is DaVinci Resolve free on Windows?

Yes. Blackmagic distributes a separate free edition that is not time-limited. DaVinci Resolve Studio is the paid edition and requires an activation code, dongle, or Blackmagic Cloud license.

Can a PC with 4 GB of RAM run current DaVinci Resolve?

That is below the current Windows requirement. Blackmagic lists 16 GB of system memory, or 32 GB when using Fusion. Older articles quoting 4 GB RAM refer to earlier releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much VRAM does DaVinci Resolve need?

The current Windows requirement lists at least 4 GB of VRAM and a GPU supporting OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 12. More demanding 4K, Fusion, effects, and noise-reduction work can need substantially more.

Why does Resolve say Media Offline when the files are still on my PC?

The project stores file-path references. A moved file, changed drive letter, disconnected drive, or inaccessible network folder can break that reference. Select the clips in the Media Pool, right-click, choose Relink Selected Clips, and select the correct folder.

Should I install a codec pack to make Resolve play my footage?

No. Codec packs are not a reliable Resolve fix and can introduce conflicts. Check the file’s codec, bit depth, chroma subsampling, frame rate, and whether the free edition supports that format. A supported transcode or proxy may be the safer solution.

Where should Resolve cache files be stored?

Use a fast SSD with adequate free space. Configure it in DaVinci Resolve > Preferences > System > Media Storage, then review project-specific locations under File > Project Settings > Master Settings > Working Folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Install Resolve 21 from Blackmagic Design, extract the Windows ZIP completely, and verify the GPU before troubleshooting the editor itself. Set the timeline frame rate and storage locations before importing substantial media, remember that projects reference rather than contain your video files, and use proxies or optimized media when playback struggles. For export, the Deliver page provides the necessary control; Quick Export is best reserved for straightforward jobs.
