One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchVentoy usually fails for one of four reasons: Secure Boot or firmware trust policy blocks the USB, an ISO is incompatible or damaged, the VTOYEFI system partition is broken, or the firmware starts the drive in an unsuitable mode. First identify where the failure occurs, then use the matching fix.
Before changing firmware settings or deleting partitions, update Ventoy. As of August 7, 2026, the current release is Ventoy 1.1.17, released July 24, 2026. It includes Secure Boot-process optimization and fixes for some UOS and GhostBSD boot failures, Proxmox VE in GRUB2 mode, Ventoy2Disk.sh PATH handling, and BusyBox fdisk detection. Do not use Ventoy 1.1.13 or 1.1.03 as fallback versions; both are deprecated. Ventoy release notes
1. Update Ventoy and fix Secure Boot enrollment
If the USB fails before the Ventoy menu appears, shows Security Violation, Security Policy Violation, or Linpus Lite, or boots without showing the MOKManager screen, Secure Boot trust policy may be the cause.
Ventoy supports Secure Boot; you do not normally need to turn it off. Some firmware trusts only the Windows UEFI Certificate Authority and rejects the Microsoft third-party UEFI CA used by Ventoy.

Update Ventoy first
- Download Ventoy 1.1.17 or a newer release from the official Ventoy download page.
- Run the Windows utility or Linux command-line utility.
- In Windows, choose Update for the existing Ventoy USB. In Linux, use the documented update operation rather than reinstalling unnecessarily.
- Safely eject and reconnect the USB before testing it again.
Ventoy 1.1.14 changed its Secure Boot shim for the UEFI CA 2023 change. Ventoy 1.1.15 and later require enrollment of the new key on first boot; an older key enrollment may not be enough. Ventoy 1.1.16 also fixed boot problems on some older UEFI firmware. Ventoy release notes
Complete the normal MOK enrollment
With Secure Boot enabled, boot the USB. On the blue MOKManager screen:
- Select Enroll Key, or use Enroll Hash if that is the available option.
- Confirm the enrollment.
- Reboot and select the USB again.
Enrollment is normally required once per computer, not once per ISO. Ventoy Secure Boot documentation
Allow the Microsoft third-party UEFI CA
If the computer immediately displays Linpus Lite or a Secure Boot violation, enter firmware setup and look for an option that permits the Microsoft third-party UEFI CA. On Dell computers, the documented setting is Enable Microsoft UEFI CA. Wording varies by manufacturer; check Secure Boot, Key Management, or Certificate settings rather than changing unrelated boot options. Ventoy issue documenting this firmware policy

- Temporarily disable Secure Boot in UEFI firmware.
- Boot the Ventoy USB.
- If needed, copy MokManager.efi into the Ventoy ISO directory on the USB. Ventoy can boot EFI binaries directly.
- From the Ventoy file list, select MokManager.efi.
- Choose Enroll Key.
- Reboot, enter firmware setup, and re-enable Secure Boot.
If enrollment and the Microsoft CA setting do not work, Ventoy’s documented fallback is to disable Secure Boot Support in the Windows utility at Option → Secure Boot Support (or use -s in the Linux command-line utility) and disable Secure Boot in the computer’s firmware before booting the USB. Secure Boot Support has been enabled by default since Ventoy 1.0.76. Ventoy Secure Boot documentation
2. Check the ISO and use WIMBOOT for Windows
If Ventoy reaches its menu but one ISO hangs, returns to the menu, displays a Windows boot error, or starts with a blank screen, test the image before rebuilding the USB.
Verify the image checksum
A corrupted download can cause an individual ISO to fail. Compare its SHA-256 or other published checksum with the value from the operating-system publisher. Ventoy’s FAQ links to checksum documentation.
On Windows PowerShell, calculate a SHA-256 checksum with:
Get-FileHash “C:\Path\to\image.iso” -Algorithm SHA256

On Linux, use:
sha256sum /path/to/image.iso
If the values differ, download the ISO again. An ISO booting with Rufus or another USB-writing tool does not prove it will boot through Ventoy. Ventoy presents the ISO as a virtual CD-ROM, and success depends on motherboard firmware, especially its UEFI implementation. Ventoy WIMBOOT documentation
Try WIMBOOT for official Windows media
For an official Windows ISO or some WinPE ISOs, try Ventoy’s WIMBOOT mode:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Highlight the Windows ISO in the Ventoy menu.
- Press w. Ctrl+w also enters WIMBOOT mode.
- Boot the image.
- Press the same key again to return to the normal method.
Since Ventoy 1.0.80, WIMBOOT is also available through the secondary boot menu. It is an alternative for official Windows and some WinPE images, not a universal replacement for normal ISO booting. Ventoy release notes document fixes for Windows 11 error 0x80070001 in 1.1.04 and later Windows/WinPE display and UEFI-resolution issues. WIMBOOT documentation · Release notes
Special case: Windows 7
If Windows 7 Setup says no install media found, the ISO may lack USB 3.0 drivers. Use installation media with the required USB drivers or connect through hardware that provides USB 2.0 support. Ventoy FAQ
3. Repair the VTOYEFI partition or reduce file scanning
A damaged VTOYEFI partition can make the entire USB unbootable. It can also make the drive behave differently from a newly created Ventoy disk.

Repair a damaged VTOYEFI partition
Ventoy’s recovery procedure is:
- Back up every ISO and file from the large data partition.
- Open a partition utility such as DiskGenius or Windows DiskPart.
- Identify the Ventoy USB by its size. Do not select your internal disk.
- Delete the broken VTOYEFI partition.
- Run Ventoy’s Non-destructive Install operation.
- Copy the ISO files back if necessary and test the USB.
Do not use a normal destructive install unless you have backed up the data. A wrong disk number in DiskPart can erase an internal drive. Non-destructive Install is appropriate when Ventoy is still recognized and the problem is limited to its system files; it may not help if the partition table or USB hardware is failing. Ventoy FAQ

Fix “Ventoy scanning files, please wait…”
Ventoy recursively searches the first, larger ISO partition for bootable image files. Too many files can make scanning appear stuck. Remove unnecessary files, or put a file named .ventoyignore in a directory to exclude that directory and its subdirectories. ISO files do not have to be in the root; folders and subfolders are supported. Ventoy FAQ
4. Check firmware boot mode, the USB device, and temporary settings
When Ventoy shows a GRUB shell, boots inconsistently, or works on one computer but not another, investigate the computer and USB hardware as well as the ISO.
Confirm whether the computer used BIOS or UEFI
Ventoy does not select or automatically switch between Legacy BIOS and UEFI. The computer’s firmware decides which boot entry is used. Once Ventoy reaches its main menu, check the lower-left status text:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| BIOS | Legacy BIOS mode |
| UEFI | UEFI mode |
| IA32 | 32-bit UEFI |
| AA64 | ARM64 UEFI |
| MIPS | MIPS64EL UEFI |
If an ISO requires UEFI but the firmware starts the USB in Legacy BIOS mode, choose the USB’s UEFI entry from the one-time boot menu. It may appear as UEFI: USB name. Older operating systems may instead require Legacy BIOS compatibility. Ventoy FAQ

Test for a bad or fake USB stick
A GRUB shell instead of the Ventoy menu can result from a faulty or counterfeit USB drive, or from a Legacy BIOS access-range limitation. Test the drive’s capacity and read/write reliability with a reputable USB test utility, then try a known-good USB drive and another computer. Also try another USB port, avoid hubs during testing, and use a rear motherboard port on a desktop when available. Ventoy FAQ
Use Ventoy’s temporary controls
For a one-time compatibility test, open F5 Tools → Temporary Control Settings. Select a setting and press Enter to toggle it. Changes apply only to the current boot and revert after reboot. Ventoy temporary control settings documentation
Check the boot entry
- Restart the computer and open its one-time boot menu. Common keys include F12, F9, Esc, or F8, depending on the manufacturer.
- Select the entry that explicitly begins with UEFI: when testing UEFI.
- If the USB does not appear, enter firmware setup and check whether USB boot is enabled.
- Temporarily disconnect other removable drives so the firmware cannot select the wrong device.
Quick diagnosis table
| Symptom | Likely action |
|---|---|
| Security Violation or no MOKManager | Update Ventoy, enroll the new key, allow Microsoft UEFI CA, or use the manual MOKManager procedure. |
| Linpus Lite appears | Check whether firmware has disabled the Microsoft third-party UEFI CA. |
| Only one Windows ISO fails | Verify its checksum and try WIMBOOT with w. |
| All booting fails after partition damage | Delete the broken VTOYEFI partition and run Non-destructive Install. |
| Scanning message never ends | Remove unnecessary files or add .ventoyignore to directories to exclude. |
| GRUB shell appears | Test the USB, check Legacy BIOS limitations, and try another port or drive. |
| USB works on one computer only | Compare UEFI/BIOS mode and Secure Boot policy on both computers. |
FAQ
Does Ventoy require Secure Boot to be disabled?
No. Ventoy supports Secure Boot. Some computers reject its boot chain because of firmware trust policies, disabled Microsoft third-party UEFI CA support, or missing MOK enrollment. Disable Secure Boot only as a fallback after supported enrollment and firmware-policy steps fail. Ventoy Secure Boot documentation
Do ISO files have to be in the root of a Ventoy USB?
No. Ventoy searches the first, larger ISO partition recursively, so ISO files can be stored in folders and subfolders. Place a file named .ventoyignore in a directory to exclude it and its contents from scanning. Ventoy FAQ
Why does Ventoy scan for a long time?
Ventoy recursively searches for bootable image files, and too many files can make the scan appear stuck. Remove unnecessary files or exclude directories with .ventoyignore. Ventoy FAQ
What is the difference between normal mode and WIMBOOT mode?
Normal mode boots an ISO using Ventoy’s standard virtual-CD-ROM method. WIMBOOT is an alternative intended for official Windows ISOs and some WinPE images when normal mode fails. Select the ISO and press w to switch modes. Ventoy WIMBOOT documentation
Will reinstalling Ventoy fix every boot problem?
No. Reinstallation may repair damaged Ventoy system files, but it will not fix a corrupted ISO, blocked Secure Boot policy, incompatible firmware, or failing USB hardware. Diagnose where the failure occurs first.
The Bottom Line
Start with Ventoy 1.1.17 or newer, then identify where the failure occurs. A pre-menu security error points to Secure Boot enrollment or firmware CA policy. A failure affecting one Windows image points to checksum verification and WIMBOOT. A broken device or prolonged scan points to VTOYEFI repair or excess files. If the result is a GRUB shell or inconsistent detection, test the USB and confirm whether the computer started it in BIOS or UEFI mode.
