Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025, so ordinary troubleshooting may not help if the service is no longer accessible on your PC. If Skype still opens, check that you are signed in, connected to the internet, not set to Do not disturb, and that both Skype and Windows allow notifications. If Skype is no longer usable, check Microsoft’s current retirement notice for Teams Free migration and data-export options.
Check whether Skype is still accessible
Microsoft says Skype retired on May 5, 2025. If the app still opens and you can sign in, try the checks below; they are conditional troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that a retired service will work. For current migration and export availability, use Microsoft’s Skype retirement notice.
Check Skype’s status and notification settings
- Open Skype and confirm that you are signed in to the account where you expect messages.
- Make sure Skype is running and that your internet connection works.
- Check your presence status. If it is set to Do not disturb, change it and test again.
- Open Skype’s notification preferences and make sure alerts for messages are enabled.
- Quit Skype completely, reopen it, and test with a new message.
Microsoft’s Skype messaging troubleshooting guidance identifies sign-in and app-running state, connectivity, presence, notification preferences, and restarting the app as relevant checks.
Allow Skype notifications in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Make sure the main Notifications switch is on.
- Find Skype in the app list. If it appears, turn on its notifications.
- Open Skype’s entry and review whether banners, Notification Center alerts, and sounds are enabled as you want.
If Skype does not appear in the list, Windows may not currently have it registered as an app that can send notifications. These Windows settings cannot restore access to a service that is no longer available.

Check Do Not Disturb and Notification Center
- Press Windows key + N to open Notification Center.
- Check whether Do not disturb is on and turn it off if you want alerts to appear as they arrive.
- In Settings > System > Notifications, open the controls for automatic Do not disturb activation.
- Review any schedule or conditions, such as gaming or full-screen use, that could silence banners.
- Look in Notification Center for alerts that may have arrived without appearing as banners.
Windows can send notifications to Notification Center while Do not disturb is silencing on-screen alerts. For details, see Microsoft’s Windows notifications and Do Not Disturb guidance.
Choose the right next step
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Skype still opens and you can sign in | Try the Skype-side and Windows notification checks above, but do not assume they can restore retired service. |
| You want to continue using a Microsoft communication service | Check Microsoft’s retirement notice for current Teams Free migration details. Microsoft says users can sign in with Skype credentials to transfer contacts and chats; confirm current eligibility and terms on the notice. |
| You mainly need an archive of your Skype information | Check the retirement notice for current data-export availability and terms. Do not rely on old export deadlines. |
Microsoft’s retirement notice describes migration and export routes, and may be updated. Check it for current terms, particularly if paid telephony services are involved.
