No. Minecraft’s recurring April Fools releases are Java Edition snapshots, not normal Bedrock Edition updates. Bedrock’s Settings, Experiments, Marketplace, and preview options cannot load the original Java snapshot.

To play an original April Fools release, open Java Edition in the Minecraft Launcher and select the relevant snapshot. Bedrock alternatives may include separate Marketplace content or add-ons inspired by the joke, but they are not the original Java snapshot.

Is the April Fools update available on Bedrock?

The original Minecraft April Fools releases are not available as regular Bedrock updates. Mojang maintains separate Java and Bedrock editions, with different update systems and release channels. A Java snapshot does not become a Bedrock update simply because both editions use the Minecraft name.

For example, the 2024 Poisonous Potato Update was released as the Java snapshot 24w14potato. References to a Bedrock “Poisonous Potato Update” generally point to separate Marketplace content or an add-on inspired by the joke, not the Java snapshot itself.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

The same distinction applies to the 2025 April Fools release. It was treated as a Java-only release; there is no Bedrock command or experiment that activates the original version.

Why Bedrock settings cannot enable it

Bedrock’s Experiments switch is for testing features made available in Bedrock. It is not a compatibility layer for Java snapshots. Likewise, the Bedrock Marketplace distributes downloadable content, but it cannot install a Java version into a Bedrock world.

Changing any of these options will not load an April Fools snapshot:

Minecraft: Switch Edition

  • Settings > Experiments
  • Preview or beta settings
  • Marketplace downloads
  • World-creation toggles

Bedrock and Java also have separate multiplayer compatibility. A player running the Java snapshot cannot join a normal Bedrock world through official cross-play. Official cross-play is between players on the same edition: Java with Java, or Bedrock with Bedrock.

How to play the original April Fools snapshot

Use the Minecraft Launcher and select Java Edition rather than opening Bedrock from its Play screen.

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher.
  2. Select Minecraft: Java Edition in the edition list.
  3. Open the Installations tab.
  4. Click New installation, or edit an existing installation.
  5. Open the Version selector.
  6. Choose the relevant Snapshot, such as 24w14potato for the 2024 Poisonous Potato release.
  7. Save the installation and click Play.

If the launcher remains set to Latest Release, it will start the normal Java release instead of the April Fools build. Snapshot names are date- or event-specific, so select the particular April Fools snapshot you want rather than assuming the newest snapshot is the joke release.

Should you use an existing world?

Use a new test world whenever possible. Snapshots are experimental builds, and an April Fools snapshot can contain unusual mechanics or changes that are not intended for a long-term survival world. Keep separate installations and make a backup before opening an important Java world in an older or experimental version.

A Java snapshot can also change or remove features in later releases. Treat it as a temporary experience rather than a permanent Minecraft version. Mojang may later develop a joke concept into a normal game feature, but that does not make the original snapshot a permanent Bedrock version.

What can Bedrock players use instead?

Bedrock players can search the Marketplace for an official or community-made experience based on an April Fools concept. They can also use compatible Bedrock add-ons where available. These may recreate a theme, item, map, or mechanic, but they are not the complete Java snapshot and should not be presented as an official port unless Mojang explicitly says they are one.

Check the content description, creator, supported Bedrock version, and installation requirements before downloading anything. Marketplace content and third-party add-ons can differ from the original Java release.

Does the newer version numbering change this?

No. Beginning in 2026, Minecraft’s release numbering uses the year, so Bedrock releases use numbers beginning with 26 rather than the older 1.21.x pattern. That numbering change is unrelated to April Fools availability and does not add an April Fools switch to Bedrock.

No. Bedrock Experiments cannot load a Java snapshot. The original April Fools releases must be selected as Java installations in the Minecraft Launcher.

Is the Poisonous Potato Update on Bedrock?

The 2024 Poisonous Potato Update was the Java snapshot 24w14potato. Bedrock may have separate Marketplace content inspired by the idea, but that content is not the original Java snapshot.

Can a Bedrock command activate the April Fools update?

No documented Bedrock command enables the original April Fools release. Commands can only use features available in the Bedrock build you are running.

Can Java and Bedrock players play the April Fools snapshot together?

Not through official cross-play. Java players use Java multiplayer, while Bedrock players use Bedrock multiplayer. A Java snapshot is not automatically playable on Bedrock.

Will an April Fools snapshot become a permanent Bedrock update?

Not automatically. An April Fools release is a temporary or experimental Java release. Mojang may separately adapt an idea for a later update, but that would be a new release rather than the original snapshot appearing in Bedrock.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: the original Minecraft April Fools update is not on Bedrock. Do not look for it under Experiments or try to activate it with a command. To play the real release, open Java Edition in the Minecraft Launcher, choose the relevant snapshot under Installations, and launch it there. Bedrock alternatives are limited to separate Marketplace content or add-ons inspired by the Java release.
