2. Try a compatible archive utility
Windows File Explorer may not handle every archive format or archive method. 7-Zip’s official site lists support for Windows 10 and Windows 11 and for unpacking formats including ZIP, 7z, and RAR. Users have also reported third-party utilities working when Explorer did not, but that is an anecdotal workaround, not a guaranteed fix.
When choosing an extractor, check whether it supports the archive format and variant, its encryption method if it is password-protected, and split volumes if the archive is divided into parts. There is no controlled comparison in the available research showing that one utility is more reliable than another for this error.

3. Check the password if the archive is encrypted
If the archive requires a password, confirm that you have the correct one and use an extractor compatible with the archive’s encryption method. A wrong password or unsupported encryption can prevent extraction. Do not weaken encryption as a general troubleshooting measure.
4. Check for every part of a split archive
Some archives are distributed as multiple volumes or parts. Confirm that all parts are present and that you are using a utility that supports the format. If the file appears incomplete or damaged, obtain a complete copy again from the legitimate sender or source where possible. Some data may be recoverable from a damaged archive, but recovery is not guaranteed and a partial extraction does not show that all files are intact.
What the error does—and does not—tell you
