To turn off touch input in Windows 10 or Windows 11, right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, and select Disable device for each HID-compliant touch screen entry. To restore touch input, choose Enable device from the same menu.
This is Microsoft’s supported, reversible device-level method. Windows does not provide a general touchscreen on/off switch in Settings.
Turn off the touchscreen in Windows 10 or Windows 11
Microsoft uses the same Device Manager procedure in both versions of Windows.
- Right-click the Start button, or press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Find HID-compliant touch screen.
- Right-click it and select Disable device.
- Select Yes if Windows asks you to confirm.
Touch input should stop immediately. You do not normally need to restart the computer.

If Device Manager lists more than one entry called HID-compliant touch screen, repeat the procedure for every entry. Leaving one enabled may allow touch input to continue.
How to turn the touchscreen back on
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Right-click each disabled HID-compliant touch screen entry.
- Select Enable device.
If the context menu says Enable device, that touchscreen is already disabled. Select that command only when you want to restore touch input.
Windows 10 versus Windows 11
There is no difference in the touchscreen-disable procedure:
| Windows version | Menu path |
|---|---|
| Windows 10 | Device Manager > Human Interface Devices > HID-compliant touch screen > Disable device |
| Windows 11 | Device Manager > Human Interface Devices > HID-compliant touch screen > Disable device |
Windows 10 reached general end of support on October 14, 2025. Existing installations continue to function, but normal free feature updates, security fixes, and technical support have ended, subject to programs such as eligible Extended Security Updates and long-term-servicing editions. This does not change how Device Manager disables the touchscreen.
If “HID-compliant touch screen” is missing
First check whether Device Manager is hiding the device:

- Open Device Manager.
- Select View on the menu bar.
- Choose Show hidden devices.
- Expand Human Interface Devices again.
A hidden or greyed-out entry may represent a device that is not currently connected or detected. It is not necessarily an active touchscreen.
If the entry still does not appear, Windows may be experiencing a driver, firmware, or hardware-detection problem. Download and install the appropriate chipset, touch, and firmware packages from the computer manufacturer’s support page. Device names can vary between manufacturers. For example, some Surface computers may expose touch hardware under a name such as Intel(R) Precise Touch and Stylus.
Do not disable a pen, stylus, digitizer, sensor, or similarly named device unless the manufacturer specifically identifies it as the touchscreen component. The wrong device could affect pen input or other hardware.
Disable the touchscreen with PowerShell
Administrators can use the built-in PnPDevice PowerShell cmdlets instead of Device Manager. Open Windows Terminal or Windows PowerShell as administrator, then run:
Get-PnpDevice -FriendlyName ‘HID-compliant touch screen’ | Disable-PnpDevice -Confirm:$false

To enable the touchscreen again, run:
Get-PnpDevice -FriendlyName ‘HID-compliant touch screen’ | Enable-PnpDevice -Confirm:$false
These commands target every currently detected device whose exact friendly name is HID-compliant touch screen. PowerShell will not find a touchscreen exposed under a manufacturer-specific name, and it cannot disable hardware that Windows is not detecting.
Disable a touchscreen with PnPUtil
PnPUtil.exe can disable a device by its Plug and Play instance ID, but you must obtain the exact ID for that computer first. The syntax is:
pnputil /disable-device “<instance ID>”
To enable it later:
pnputil /enable-device “<instance ID>”
Run these commands from an elevated Command Prompt or Terminal. The /disable-device and /enable-device options are available starting with Windows 10 version 2004. Do not copy a sample USB instance ID from another computer; touchscreen IDs are hardware-specific.
Do not uninstall the touchscreen
Choose Disable device, not Uninstall device, when you simply want to turn touch off.

|---|---|
| Disable device | Stops Windows from using the touchscreen while leaving the device installed. It can be enabled again from Device Manager. |
| Uninstall device | Removes the device from Device Manager and may remove its driver package. Windows may detect and reinstall it later. |
Uninstalling is a troubleshooting or driver-removal operation, not a more permanent version of disabling. It can create additional driver problems without reliably preventing Windows from detecting the touchscreen again.

Touch still works after disabling one entry
Return to Human Interface Devices and check for additional entries named HID-compliant touch screen. Disable each one. Do not disable unrelated HID devices such as keyboards, mice, pen hardware, or sensors.
The touchscreen comes back after an update
A Windows update, firmware update, driver installation, or hardware re-detection can restore or reinstall a device. Disabling a device does not permanently remove its driver package. If touch returns, open Device Manager and disable every relevant touchscreen entry again.
Touch works on the sign-in screen
Some online guides recommend changing a registry value under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Wisp\Touch
This is not Microsoft’s general supported method for disabling a touchscreen. Because HKEY_CURRENT_USER applies to one signed-in user profile, it is not equivalent to disabling the device system-wide. It may also fail to affect touch before sign-in or may not persist after a restart. Device Manager is the more appropriate method for a device-level disable.

FAQ
Is there a touchscreen toggle in Windows Settings?
Not as a general supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 setting. Use Device Manager: expand Human Interface Devices, right-click HID-compliant touch screen, and select Disable device.
Will disabling the touchscreen disable the keyboard or mouse?
No, provided you disable only the entry named HID-compliant touch screen. Human Interface Devices also contains keyboards, mice, pens, sensors, and other hardware, so avoid similarly named entries unless they are confirmed as the touchscreen.
Why are there two HID-compliant touch screen entries?
Some computers expose more than one touchscreen-related HID device. Disable every entry with that exact name if you want touch input to stop completely.
Can I turn off touch permanently?
Device Manager provides the supported reversible device-level method. It may need to be repeated after driver, firmware, Windows updates, or hardware re-detection. Uninstalling the device does not guarantee a permanent disable and can cause driver problems.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What should I do if the touchscreen is not listed?
In Device Manager, select View and then Show hidden devices. If it is still missing, install the manufacturer’s chipset, touchscreen, and firmware drivers. A missing entry can indicate that the device is hidden, disconnected, not detected, or affected by a driver or firmware issue.
The Bottom Line
For either Windows 10 or Windows 11, right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, right-click every HID-compliant touch screen entry, and select Disable device. To restore touch, choose Enable device from the same menu.
