ChatGPT can help you work through exam questions, but you should use it to practise reasoning rather than copy its first response. Study Mode can explain concepts, ask questions, check understanding, and provide practice; ask for hints or one question at a time if you want guided help. Verify important answers against your course materials, since ChatGPT can make mistakes.

Study Mode is currently available globally on all ChatGPT plans on web, iOS, and Android. It works with the models available on your account and follows your normal plan, message, and rate limits.

What to provide with an exam question

Give ChatGPT enough context to match the expected level and answer format. Include your educational level, subject and exact topic, objective, what you already understand, exam date or format, and relevant course materials.

A vague prompt such as Answer this chemistry question may produce an answer that is too advanced, too short, or based on a method your course does not use. Try:

I am a first-year university student preparing for a biology exam next week. I understand cell respiration but struggle with electron transport chains. Help me solve the question below using the terminology from my lecture notes. Give me one hint at a time, ask me to attempt each step, and do not reveal the final answer until I try.

How to turn on ChatGPT Study Mode

Start a regular ChatGPT conversation. Study Mode is not available inside GPT or Project conversations; a Temporary Chat is an alternative. Menu labels can vary by interface or rollout.

On the web

  1. In the message composer, type @study and select Study.
  2. Alternatively, select +, search for study, and select Study.
  3. You can also open chatgpt.com/studymode.
  4. Some interfaces show Tools > Study and learn, or let you type / and choose Study and learn.

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Select the attachment or + button to open the tools sheet.
  2. Select Study. You can also type @study and select Study.
  3. If slash suggestions are available, type /study at the start of the message and select Study.

On Android

  1. Select +, then Plugins.
  2. Search for Study and select it. You can also type @study and choose Study.

Turn Study Mode off

Remove the selected Study token from the message composer. On desktop web, place the cursor next to the token and press Backspace or Delete. If your interface shows an ×, select it. Selecting Study again can also turn it off on iOS or in menus where it is shown as selected.

Use a prompt that controls the type of help

Study Mode is designed to guide learning, but it may sometimes give a direct answer. Say what kind of help you want.

Goal Prompt to use
Learn the method Explain the method, then ask me to apply it to this question.
Get a hint Give me only the next hint. Do not solve the problem yet.
Work step by step Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer before continuing.
Check an attempt Here is my working. Identify the first incorrect step and explain why, without rewriting the whole solution.
Prepare for an exam Quiz me on this topic one question at a time. Explain every mistake and increase the difficulty gradually.
Practise transfer Walk through one example, then give me a similar problem without the solution.
Review quickly List the most important concepts I need to know, then test me on them.
Check multiple choice Ask me why I chose option B, then explain whether it is correct and why the other options are wrong.

Upload the exam question, notes, or syllabus

When uploads are available in your chat, you can provide class notes, syllabi, worksheets, slides, textbook excerpts, PDFs, or photos of math and science problems. Specify the page, question, or section you want ChatGPT to use.

For example: Use page 12, question 4 of the uploaded worksheet. First summarize what you can read in the question. Then ask me which formula or principle applies. Do not use methods outside the attached lecture notes.

For a revision plan, try: Use the uploaded syllabus and lecture notes to create a study plan. Prioritize topics by exam weighting and my weak areas. Include a quiz at the end of each study session.

Documented file limits

OpenAI’s file-upload documentation lists these general limits. Availability and limits can depend on the plan and workflow.

Item Documented limit
Maximum individual file size 512 MB
Text and document files Up to 2 million tokens
Images 20 MB per image
CSV files and spreadsheets Approximately 50 MB, depending on row size
Uploads Up to 80 files every 3 hours; limits may be reduced during peak periods
Free accounts 3 file uploads per day
Shared storage 25 GB per user and 100 GB per organization

Failed upload attempts can sometimes count toward the rolling upload limit, and ChatGPT does not currently show how much of that quota remains. Source: OpenAI’s File Uploads FAQ.

Check that ChatGPT read the question correctly

Do not assume an uploaded image or file was interpreted accurately. Check details such as minus signs, exponents, fractions, subscripts, diagrams, tables, and answer choices.

  1. Upload a clear image or PDF.
  2. Identify the exact page, question, or section.
  3. Ask ChatGPT to summarize what it sees before answering.
  4. Compare its summary with the original and paste any ambiguous text directly into the chat.

If the transcription is wrong, upload a clearer file or paste the important text. This can help catch errors before working through a solution.

A reliable workflow for solving one question

  1. Set the context. State your level, subject, topic, exam format, and target method.
  2. Choose the learning approach. Use Study Mode and request hints or one question at a time if you want to practise.
  3. Verify the input. For an upload, ask ChatGPT to summarize the relevant question first.
  4. Attempt the first step yourself. A partial attempt can reveal where you are stuck.
  5. Request targeted feedback. Ask it to identify the first error instead of replacing your entire solution.
  6. Complete the solution. Ask for a worked answer after you have tried, or when checking your work.
  7. Verify independently. Compare with your notes, instructor’s method, or a trusted textbook.
  8. Practise again. Ask for a similar question and solve it without assistance.

Prompts for common exam question types

Mathematics and physics

Do not calculate this for me immediately. Ask me to identify the known values, unknown value, units, and governing equation. Check my unit conversion before allowing me to continue. At the end, ask me to estimate whether the answer is reasonable.

Essay and humanities questions

Help me plan an answer to this history question. Ask me for a thesis first. Then help me build evidence-based paragraphs using only the uploaded sources. Distinguish facts from interpretations and do not write the final essay for me.

Science explanations

Explain this process in four stages. After each stage, ask me to explain it in my own words. Point out any missing causal link or incorrect terminology.

Multiple-choice questions

Ask me to commit to an answer and explain my reasoning before you respond. Then identify the key clue, explain why the correct option works, and explain the misconception behind each distractor.

Adjust Study Mode when its teaching style is wrong

If the response is too fast, ask it to slow down, pause after each step, explain the topic for a beginner, or use a simpler example. If it is too basic, ask for an advanced explanation, harder questions, edge cases, or common traps. If the discussion is wandering, specify the question or method to focus on.

When Study Mode is missing

First check whether you are in a regular conversation: Study Mode is unavailable inside GPT and Project conversations. Interface or rollout differences can also affect what you see. If the option is missing, try these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Update and restart the ChatGPT app.
  2. Sign out and sign back in.
  3. On the web, hard-refresh chatgpt.com.
  4. Clear site data or cookies for chatgpt.com.
  5. Try a private or incognito window with extensions disabled.
  6. Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, or content blockers.
  7. Try another network if you are on a school or workplace connection.

In some linked teen accounts, a parent can set new conversations to start in Study Mode. Some eligible ChatGPT Edu workspaces can also require Study Mode for regular conversations. When it is enforced, the selector may not appear.

Privacy and Memory

If Memory is enabled, Study Mode can use saved memories and past chats to personalize explanations, such as by using your learning goals, preferred explanation style, or previously studied topics. Study Mode also works with Memory disabled, though responses may be less personalized. Manage Memory at Settings > Personalization > Memory.

Files uploaded to ordinary chats follow the retention period of the associated chat. Chats remain in your account until deleted; OpenAI says deleted chats are removed from its systems within 30 days, subject to security, legal, and de-identification exceptions. Files uploaded in Temporary Chat are not saved to your account or Library. Source: OpenAI’s File Uploads FAQ and File Storage and Library in ChatGPT.

Before uploading course materials, check your institution’s rules and avoid sharing confidential or personal information unless you are permitted to do so.

Important limitations

ChatGPT can make mistakes in calculations, citations, interpretations, and explanations. OpenAI advises double-checking information for exams and other high-stakes topics. Study Mode follows the same plan, model, message, and rate-limit rules as ordinary ChatGPT; it does not add messages, bypass limits, or unlock unavailable models. Source: OpenAI’s Study Mode guide.

File and image uploads, as well as generated diagrams, charts, and other tools, depend on what is available in the specific chat. Treat ChatGPT as a study aid, not a replacement for your course materials or instructor.
