The message “Sorry, this application cannot be run under a virtual machine” is an application-level refusal, not proof that Windows is running inside a virtual machine. Games and other protected applications may reject a system based on hypervisor, hardware, driver, network adapter, firmware, or timing signals. There is no universal fix: first determine whether Windows is running on physical hardware or inside a virtual machine, then check the application’s support policy.

Why this error appears

Applications can inspect multiple signals when deciding whether to run, including:

  • Hyper-V or another Windows hypervisor
  • Virtual Machine Platform or Windows Hypervisor Platform
  • VMware, VirtualBox, or Parallels drivers and services
  • Virtual network adapter names, such as VMware PCI Ethernet Adapter
  • BIOS and SMBIOS identifiers
  • Hardware virtualization flags such as Intel VT-x
  • Timing and hardware behavior associated with virtualization
  • Anti-cheat or anti-abuse rules intended to prevent cheating, automation, or multiple game instances

Because checks vary, disabling one Windows feature or changing one registry value may not help. VMware community participants report that some game vendors deliberately block virtual machines. Read the VMware community discussion.

First determine which situation applies

Situation Likely explanation Next step
Windows runs inside VMware, VirtualBox, or Parallels The application detects virtual hardware, hypervisor components, drivers, or firmware data Check the application’s support policy and test on physical hardware if needed
Windows is installed directly on a physical PC A Windows hypervisor may be active, or the application may be interpreting legitimate firmware virtualization signals as a VM Check Windows virtualization components and boot configuration
The error began after an application update The application may have changed its detection rules Check the developer’s support information and contact the vendor
Only one protected application fails The refusal may be application-specific Do not assume reinstalling Windows or changing registry strings will help

Check Windows virtualization components on a physical PC

Only try this if Windows is installed directly on the computer, not inside a virtual machine. Relevant Windows components include Hyper-V, Virtual Machine Platform, Windows Hypervisor Platform, Windows Sandbox, Windows Subsystem for Linux 2, and security features that depend on virtualization-based security. Disabling components can affect tools and security features you rely on.

On supported Windows installations, press Windows key + R, type optionalfeatures, and press Enter. Review the Windows Features list and, for diagnostic testing, clear only virtualization-related features you do not need. Select OK and restart.

A legacy Microsoft Q&A answer documented this Windows 8.1 path: Windows key + X → Control Panel → Programs and Features → Turn Windows features on or off → clear “Hyper-V” → Apply → OK → restart. This is a historical Windows 8.1 path, not a verified current Settings path for every Windows 10 or 11 version. The same discussion reports that disabling Hyper-V did not resolve every case. See the Microsoft Q&A discussion.

Prevent the Windows hypervisor from launching

On a physical PC, open Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt as an administrator and run:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

Restart Windows for the setting to affect the next boot. To restore the normal automatic setting later, run this in an elevated terminal and restart:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto

This is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix. In a May 6, 2025 Microsoft Q&A report, a physical Surface Pro running Windows 10 Home 22H2 still displayed the error after Virtual Machine Platform and Windows Hypervisor Platform were disabled, the command was run, and systeminfo showed Hyper-V disabled. The response attributed that case to the application’s sensitivity to hardware virtualization flags such as Intel VT-x; this is an explanation for that Surface and Dead Space 3 report, not a universal diagnosis. Read the Microsoft Q&A report.

Check whether the application supports virtual machines

Some applications, particularly online games and software with anti-cheat or anti-abuse protection, intentionally refuse to run in virtual machines. Parallels staff stated on February 28, 2024, that Genshin Impact did not work in Parallels or other virtual-machine products and that no definite workaround could be guaranteed. See the Parallels discussion.

If the vendor says virtual machines are unsupported, the practical options are:

  1. Run the application on a physical Windows installation.
  2. Use a developer-provided build or supported configuration.
  3. Contact the application vendor to ask whether virtual machines are supported.
  4. Choose another application if the vendor does not support your configuration.

Reinstalling VMware Tools, changing the VM name, or editing a BIOS string cannot make an unsupported application supported.

VMware configuration changes are experiments, not guaranteed fixes

VMware community users have reported that applications may detect VMware-specific hardware, drivers, VMware Tools, or virtual NIC identifiers. One report identifies the network adapter name VMware PCI Ethernet Adapter as a possible detection point. Read the VMware community report.

Some users have experimented with these settings in a powered-off VMware virtual machine’s .vmx file:

monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = “true”
isolation.tools.getPtrLocation.disable = “true”
isolation.tools.setPtrLocation.disable = “true”
isolation.tools.setVersion.disable = “true”
isolation.tools.getVersion.disable = “true”
monitor_control.disable_directexec = “true”
SMBIOS.reflectHost = “true”

These are community experiments, not Broadcom-certified settings. Reports say capable software can still detect a VM after changes, and an application update may invalidate them. See the VMware discussion.

If you choose to test a VM configuration change:

  1. Shut down the guest completely; do not suspend it.
  2. Back up the .vmx file and virtual machine.
  3. Change one setting at a time.
  4. Do not use changes to conceal a virtual environment from software whose terms prohibit it.
  5. Undo the change if the VM becomes unstable or fails to boot.

Do not assume that uninstalling VMware Tools will solve the problem. Community reports conflict: one user reported removing it without success, while another reported success with a fresh VMware Player installation that did not install VMware Tools. Neither report establishes a reproducible fix.

Avoid registry spoofing as a first-line solution

Older guides recommend renaming entries containing VBOX_ under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\ACPI\DSDT or changing SystemBiosVersion and VideoBiosVersion under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System. The research identifies these as old tutorial and user-report suggestions, not dependable fixes for current Windows versions or applications.

A January 28, 2023 Microsoft Q&A report describes a Surface Pro 8 user changing SystemBiosVersion to NOBOX -1 and altering the video-driver description without resolving the error. Read the Microsoft Q&A report. Registry edits can damage system configuration or be overwritten by updates. Do not change values merely because an online guide claims they hide a VM.

What not to assume

Assumption Why it is unreliable
“Hyper-V is definitely enabled.” The error has been reported on physical hardware after Windows hypervisor features were disabled, and some applications intentionally block VMs.
“Disabling Hyper-V is enough.” Other Windows components, boot configuration, firmware, and application-specific detection may matter.
“Changing the VM name hides it.” Applications may inspect drivers, network adapters, firmware data, timing, and hypervisor behavior.
“Uninstalling VMware Tools always works.” Community reports conflict, and applications may detect virtual hardware without relying on Tools.
“A BIOS or video-driver string is the only detection method.” Protected applications can use multiple independent checks.

When the error persists

  1. Confirm whether the operating system is installed on physical hardware or running as a guest.
  2. Record the application name and version, Windows edition and build, and virtualization product.
  3. On a physical PC, review Windows Features and test the hypervisor boot setting only if you understand which virtualization features you depend on.
  4. Restart after boot-configuration changes.
  5. Restore any WSL2, Windows Sandbox, container, Android subsystem, or security features you need.
  6. Check the application’s official support information for VM restrictions.
  7. Contact the developer with the exact error and system details.

If the application deliberately blocks virtual machines, there may be nothing to repair in Windows. The supported resolution is to use physical hardware, a configuration the developer explicitly supports, or contact the application vendor.

FAQ

Does this error prove my PC is running inside a virtual machine?

No. It is an application-level refusal. A program may display it on a physical PC after detecting hardware virtualization flags, firmware settings, or security features that it associates with virtualization.

Will disabling Hyper-V fix the error?

Sometimes, but not universally. Virtual Machine Platform, Windows Hypervisor Platform, the boot setting, firmware virtualization, and application-specific detection can also be involved.

What command prevents the Windows hypervisor from launching?

In an elevated Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Windows Terminal, run bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off, then restart. This does not guarantee that an application will stop detecting virtualization.

Can I run a VM-blocked game in VMware by editing the VMX file?

Community users have reported experimental VMX settings, but they are unsupported, may stop working after updates, and may violate an application’s terms. If the developer blocks VMs, use physical hardware or contact the developer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I change SystemBiosVersion or VideoBiosVersion in the registry?

No, not as a first-line fix. These edits come from old guides, are unreliable on current systems, and have failed to resolve the error for some users.

Why can the error occur on a Surface with Hyper-V disabled?

In one reported Surface Pro and Dead Space 3 case, the application’s detection was considered overly sensitive to hardware virtualization flags such as Intel VT-x. That report does not establish a general explanation for other computers or applications.

The bottom line

This message does not reliably diagnose Hyper-V as active. On a physical PC, review Windows virtualization components and the boot setting, then restart; on a virtual machine, first check whether the application supports virtualized hardware. If the application intentionally blocks VMs, registry edits and VMX tweaks are unlikely to provide a durable or supported solution.
