To move a PowerPoint sub-bullet back to the main bullet level, click in the paragraph, place the cursor at its beginning, and choose Home > Paragraph > Decrease List Level. On a Mac, use Home > Indent Less. In PowerPoint for the web, you can also press Shift+Tab at the beginning of the paragraph.
If the bullet is at the correct list level but is simply too far left or right, use the Ruler instead. Changing a list level and changing the horizontal position are separate operations.
Move a bullet to a higher list level
This is the usual meaning of “un-indent.” For example, it changes a sub-bullet such as Details into a main bullet alongside Overview.
- Open the presentation in Normal view.
- Click inside the bullet paragraph you want to move.
- Place the insertion point at the beginning of the paragraph.
- On Windows, select Home > Paragraph > Decrease List Level.
PowerPoint moves that paragraph to the preceding, less-indented list level. If it is already a top-level bullet, there is no higher list level to use, so the command will not make another visible change.

PowerPoint for the web
In the browser version, use the same menu path: Home > Paragraph > Decrease List Level. You can also press Shift+Tab with the cursor at the beginning of the bullet paragraph.
PowerPoint for Mac
- Click in the affected bullet.
- Put the cursor at the beginning of the line.
- Select Home > Indent Less.
The opposite command is Indent More, which moves a paragraph to a deeper list level.
Un-indent several bullets at once
To move multiple paragraphs together, select the bullet paragraphs first, then use Decrease List Level on Windows or Indent Less on Mac. PowerPoint applies the change to the selected paragraphs. Selecting only the text inside one paragraph may not produce the result you expect, so include each affected bullet paragraph in the selection.
Move the bullet or text without changing its list level
Use this method when the bullet is correctly classified as a main bullet or sub-bullet, but its physical position looks wrong. The Ruler lets you move the bullet symbol, the text, or both.
- Switch to Normal view.
- Click inside the bulleted paragraph.
- Select View > Show > Ruler.
- On the horizontal ruler, locate the indentation markers.
- Drag the appropriate marker.

| Rectangular bottom portion of the left-indent marker | Moves the bullet and text together while preserving their spacing. |
Lists with multiple levels can display markers for each level. Adjust the marker belonging to the level you want to change. If you drag only the first-line marker, for example, the bullet may move while the text stays in place; that behavior is normal.

Fix indentation that keeps coming back
If the indentation returns whenever you change slides or reapply a layout, it may be defined by the slide layout or master rather than by the individual text box.
- Select View > Presentation Views > Slide Master.
- Choose the relevant slide master or layout.
- Select the bulleted placeholder text.
- Use Decrease List Level or adjust the indentation markers on the Ruler.
- Select Slide Master > Close Master View.
- In Normal view, select the affected slide or slides.
- Choose Home > Slides > Layout, then select the updated layout.
Existing slides may need the layout reapplied before they adopt the revised layout formatting.
Why the command may not work
| Problem | Likely cause and fix |

| Decrease List Level does nothing | The cursor may be outside the intended paragraph, or the bullet is already at the highest level. Click directly in the bullet and place the cursor at its beginning. |
| Shift+Tab does not decrease the level | The shortcut requires the cursor to be at the beginning of the paragraph. If it does not work, use the ribbon command. |
| Ruler is unavailable | You may be in Slide Sorter or another view that does not provide the Ruler. Switch to Normal view. |
| The bullet moves but the text does not | You moved the first-line indent marker. Move the pointed top portion or rectangular bottom portion of the left-indent marker, depending on whether you want to move the text or both elements. |
| Only one bullet appears in a title box | PowerPoint treats multiple lines in a title placeholder as a single line. Use a content placeholder or text box for a conventional bulleted list. |
What not to use
- Bullets: The Bullets button turns bullet formatting on or off; it does not move a bullet to a higher list level.
- Backspace as a general fix: Backspace can stop a new bullet list after pressing Enter, but it is not the standard command for moving an existing bullet. Use Decrease List Level, Indent Less, or the Ruler.
- Word’s Adjust List Indents dialog: PowerPoint’s documented fine-positioning method is the Ruler and its indentation markers, not Word’s list-indentation instructions.

Why does Shift+Tab not un-indent my bullet?
The cursor may not be at the beginning of the bullet paragraph. Click there and try again, or use Decrease List Level.
How do I move the bullet without changing its level?
Turn on View > Show > Ruler and drag the indentation markers. The first-line marker moves the bullet; the other left-indent markers move the text or move both bullet and text.

The formatting may come from the slide layout or master. Edit the placeholder in View > Slide Master, close Master view, and reapply the layout through Home > Slides > Layout.
Why does a title placeholder show only one bullet?
PowerPoint treats multiple lines in a title placeholder as a single line. Use a content placeholder or text box for a conventional bulleted list.
