Xbox sign-in failures can come from Microsoft’s servers, the account itself, the console’s saved profile, or—on Windows—the Xbox app and Gaming Services. Start with the checks that do not change anything, then move toward profile removal and advanced repairs.
These steps apply to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the Xbox app for Windows. Use the console instructions only for a console, and the Windows instructions only if you are signing in through a PC.
1. Check the Xbox service status
Before changing your password or resetting the console, check the official Xbox status page. Look for incidents affecting Account & profile, Xbox network, or sign-in.
If Microsoft reports an outage, your password and internet connection may be working normally. There is nothing useful to repair locally until the service is restored. Check the status page again later rather than repeatedly trying to sign in.

2. Verify the Microsoft account in a browser
Go to account.microsoft.com and sign in with the same email address, phone number, or alias used on Xbox.
Microsoft account aliases belong to the same account and use the same password. An alternate alias is not a separate Xbox account. If browser sign-in fails, use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper before troubleshooting the console.
If you forgot the password, choose I forgot my password on the sign-in screen or use Microsoft’s password-reset flow. Xbox Support cannot send password-reset links or bypass Microsoft’s account-security checks.
3. Stop retrying if the account is being rate-limited
Repeated incorrect attempts can produce messages such as “You have tried too many times with an incorrect password” or Error 400. Microsoft lists repeated attempts, as well as problems with the app, device, or network, as possible causes.
Do not keep submitting the same password. Instead:
- Choose Other ways to sign in, if it is available.
- Use a verification method already configured on the Microsoft account.
- Try signing in from another device.
- Switch to another network, such as a phone hotspot.
See Microsoft’s guidance for Error 400 and too many incorrect-password attempts.
4. Restart or power-cycle the Xbox
A restart clears temporary console state without removing games or personal data.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system.
- Select Power.
- Select Restart console.
If a normal restart does not help, perform a full power cycle:

- Press and hold the console’s front Xbox button for 10 seconds.
- Unplug the power cable.
- Wait at least 10 seconds.
- Reconnect the cable and turn the console on.
This procedure does not delete installed games, apps, or personal data. Microsoft’s restart and power-cycle instructions cover the same process.

5. Test the Xbox network connection
On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, open:
Xbox button > Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection
If the test fails, restart your router and test again. For a quick isolation test, connect the console temporarily to a phone hotspot or a different Wi-Fi network.
| What happens | Likely direction |
|---|---|
| Sign-in fails on every network | Check the Microsoft account, Xbox status, or console profile. |
| Sign-in works on a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi | Investigate the router, DNS, filtering, firewall rules, or ISP connection. |
| Other devices work, but the Xbox cannot authenticate | The network may block Xbox traffic or require an additional approval step. |
Hotel, dorm, workplace, and managed networks
A network that requires browser sign-in, MAC-address approval, or restrictive firewall rules can let phones and laptops connect while blocking Xbox authentication. Contact the network administrator if approval is required.
Clearing the alternate MAC address is useful mainly when you previously configured a custom alternate MAC address or the network specifically uses MAC whitelisting. The path is:

It is not a universal sign-in fix. When no custom alternate MAC was entered, clearing it has essentially the same effect as restarting the console.

6. Remove and re-add the Xbox profile
If the account works at account.microsoft.com but the console keeps rejecting or losing the profile, remove the locally stored profile and add it again.
- Press the Xbox button.
- Select Profile & system > Settings.
- Select Account > Remove accounts.
- Select the affected profile and choose Remove.
- Restart the console.
- Press the Xbox button.
- Select Profile & system > Add or switch > Add new.
- Enter the Microsoft account credentials.
Removing a profile from the console does not delete the Microsoft account, purchases, achievements, friends list, or cloud account. However, make sure you know the correct email address and password before removing it. If the account has not synchronized recent saved data, do not treat profile removal as a substitute for checking cloud-save status.
7. Install a pending console update
An outdated or partially applied system update can interfere with authentication and Xbox network services. On Xbox One, open:
Xbox button > Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads
Select Update console if it is available. A grayed-out No console update available option means the console is already up to date. To see the installed system version, open Settings > System > Console info.
8. Repair or reset the Xbox app on Windows
This step is for the Xbox app on a Windows PC, not the console dashboard. In Windows 11:

- Select the … button next to it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- If sign-in still fails, select Reset.
Repair attempts to fix the app while retaining its data. Reset clears local app data, preferences, and the saved sign-in state, so you will need to sign in again. Some Windows apps do not expose both options.

Also install pending updates:
- Windows: Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates
- Microsoft Store: open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that operating system.
9. Repair Gaming Services or reset the Microsoft Store cache
On Windows, use this fix when the Xbox app is stuck on Launching Xbox, repeatedly asks you to sign in, or shows Gaming Services errors such as 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F.
Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool
Download Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool, run it as administrator, and follow its prompts. This is preferable to manually changing system components for an ordinary sign-in failure.
Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter wsreset.exe.
- Select OK.
- Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen.
For the specific legacy Gaming Services errors 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F, Microsoft also documents this advanced PowerShell repair:
Get-AppxPackage *gamingservices* -allusers | remove-appxpackage -allusers
Remove-Item -Path “HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\GamingServices” -recurse
Remove-Item -Path “HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\GamingServicesNet” -recurse
Save the commands as RepairGamingServices.ps1, select All Files (*.*) as the file type, right-click the file, choose Run as administrator, and restart the PC. Then open the Xbox app and select Install when the Gaming Services banner appears.
Do not run this script as a routine sign-in step. It changes Gaming Services packages and registry entries and is intended for the documented Gaming Services failures.

- Xbox Game Pass or Xbox Live Gold is required to sign in: a Microsoft account is enough for authentication. A subscription requirement depends on the game or online feature.
- Clearing Alternate MAC always fixes sign-in: it is relevant primarily to a custom alternate MAC or a managed network that uses MAC approval.
- Reset and keep my games & apps keeps everything: it preserves installed games and apps, but resets console configuration and removes locally stored account settings. You must sign in again afterward.
- The Xbox app and Microsoft Store can use any unrelated accounts: mismatched accounts can cause ownership, installation, and authentication problems. Use the account associated with the Xbox profile and purchased content in both apps.
If none of the fixes work
Compare the failure across three places: the Xbox console, account.microsoft.com, and—if relevant—the Xbox app on another device. A web failure points toward the Microsoft account or a service outage. A browser success with a console-only failure points toward the console profile, network, update, or local authentication state.

Only after backing up anything important and confirming your credentials should you consider Reset console > Reset and keep my games & apps. It avoids reinstalling your games, but it is not a data-free reset: console settings and local account information are removed.
FAQ
Why won’t my Xbox let me sign in even though my password is correct?
Check the Xbox status page first, then test the account at account.microsoft.com. If the account works in a browser, restart the console, test another network, and remove and re-add the local Xbox profile.
Does clearing the Alternate MAC address fix Xbox sign-in problems?
Not usually. It is mainly useful when a custom alternate MAC address was configured or a hotel, school, workplace, or other managed network uses MAC-address approval. Otherwise, clearing it generally has the same effect as restarting the console.
Will removing my Xbox profile delete my games and purchases?
No. Removing the profile from the console does not delete the Microsoft account, digital purchases, achievements, friends list, or cloud account. You must add the profile again afterward.
What does Error 400 mean when signing in to Xbox?
It can appear after repeated sign-in attempts or because of an app, device, or network problem. Stop submitting the same password, try another sign-in method, switch networks, or use another device.
What should I do if the Xbox app on Windows is stuck on Launching Xbox?
Repair or reset the Xbox app from Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox > Advanced options. Then update Windows and Microsoft Store, run Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool, and use wsreset.exe to clear the Store cache.
The Bottom Line
Check Xbox service status and verify the Microsoft account before changing the console. If the account is valid, work through a restart, network test, profile re-add, and console update. On Windows, repair the Xbox app and Gaming Services separately. Avoid repeated password attempts and advanced PowerShell repairs unless the error specifically matches the documented Gaming Services failures.
